John Miller

John Michael Miller M.D., age 74 of Fort Gratiot, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, from complications of cancer.

After graduating from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, Dr. Miller received his medical degree with honors from the University of Iowa. He arrived in Michigan in 1957 for an internship at Highland Park General Hospital, and he completed his post-graduate specialty training at Wayne County General Hospital. Dr. Miller earned board certification in Internal Medicine in 1964, a distinction he had recertified in 1977, 1984, and 1987.

It was at Highland Park when Dr. Miller met Patricia Nelson, a Port Huron native who was then a student nurse. The two married in 1958 and settled in Port Huron after both completed their training. Dr. Miller opened his practice in 1961, and for 35 years he was privileged to be involved in the care of countless patients. He retired in 1996, still fond of his patients and practice, but determined to dedicate himself to the wonderful frustrations of fishing. In this, he was not disappointed.

During his career, Dr. Miller was a member of the medical staffs at Mercy and Port Huron hospitals; he was also a member of the Michigan State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and in 2000 he received the Zacharias Award for Excellence from the American Heart Association.

Although Dr. Miller was a dedicated physician, he felt his most rewarding job was raising his children. They were his greatest pride, and his wife was his greatest good fortune.

Dr. Miller was predeceased by his parents, George and Alma Brown of Davenport, Iowa; his aunt, Maggie Icenogle of Davenport; and his father-in-law, John H. Nelson of Port Huron.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia; his sons, Gregory and Robert, who both reside in San Francisco; his cousin, Donna Lang, of Davenport; his sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Dr. John) Youngs, JoAnne (Gary) Ebert, Sara Jane (Robert) Rowling; his brother-in-law, John (Sharon) Nelson; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Nelson; his nieces, Susan Keeling (and her daughter Andrea Youngs), Mary Beth (Antonio) Ferrente (and their children Jason and Evan), and Kristina Rowling; his nephews, Riley Youngs, Michael Youngs (and his children Sean, Dustin, and Michelle), and Robert (Lauren) Rowling. Dr. Miller also wished it to be known that he is survived by his dog, Leddie.

Dr. Miller wanted to extend his deepest appreciation to his friends, neighbors, and his own doctors for the comfort and care he received during his illness. He especially wanted to thank Drs. Haidar, Dalal, Cox, Patel and their staffs, along with the nurses from Amicare and Hospice.
