Alden Hart

Alden J. Hart, 71 of Lakeport, MI, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2000 in his residence after a long battle with cancer. He was born to John and Rose Hart on December 23, 1928 in Yale, MI. He graduated from Yale High School and the Detroit College of Applied Science. On April 9, 1949, Alden married Dorothy Drozdowski in Port Huron.

He worked for Chrysler Corp. for 42 years until his retirement, attended the North Lakeport Wesleyan Church, and was a member of Port Huron Lodge #343 BPOE. He enjoyed camping and fishing.

Alden is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Hart, Lakeport, MI; two sons, Allen J. (Katherine) Hart, Clarkston, MI and Richard W. Hart, Warren, MI; three grandchildren, Lauren, Sarah, and Jacob Hart; his sister, Doris (Bill) Sharrow, Roseville, MI; his two brothers, Alvin (Lee) Hart, Chicago, IL and Calvin (Louise) Hart, Justice, IL; his sister in law, Myrtle Hart, Attica, MI; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Hart.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2000 in North Lakeport Wesleyan Church. The Rev. Steven DeNeff, Pastor of North Lakeport Wesleyan Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeport cemetery. Visitation is in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be a visitation on Saturday in the Church from 12:00 noon until the hour of service.

Pallbearers will be members of Alden's family. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to North Lakeport Wesleyan Church or Blue Water Hospice.

Edith Henry

Edith W. Henry, 80 of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away Thursday, November 16, 2000 in Port Huron Hospital. She was born to Milan and Elva Wilcox on February 18, 1920 in Port Huron and was a life long area resident.

Edith worked for the Port Huron Area School District for 26 years retiring in 1980. She was a life long member of Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron Hospital Auxillary, and was very active in the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed oil painting & water colors, and especially enjoyed her family.

She is survived by her four daughters, Elizabeth Ann Brown, Margaret Jo Boddy, & Virginia L. Crockett, all of Port Huron, and Barbara Sue (Marshall) Lohr, Muskegon, MI; five grandchildren, Sarah Jo (Brian) Root, Port Huron, Katherine Ann Boddy, Lansing, MI, Karen Suanne Crockett, Port Huron, and Kip & Adam Schwarz, both of Muskegon; one great grandson, Nicholas Jay Root, Port Huron; her sister, Elizabeth Wilcox Canada, Bloomington, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2000 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street. The Rev. Robert P. Trask, Pastor of Grace Episcopal Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Edith's memory to Grace Episcopal Church or the charity of the donor's choice.

James R. Hewitt

James R. Hewitt, 52, of Port Huron Township died Tuesday, November 14, 2000. in Mount Clemens General Hospital after a short illness.

He was born August 11, 1948, in Owosso. He married Michelle Knowles in February 1973 in Port Huron.

Mr. Hewitt was employed as a machinist with T.R.W Romeo plant.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of American Legion Charles Hammond Post 8 and the VFW Marysville Post 2340.

Mr. Hewitt was an avid competitive sports player in softball and baseball. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, archery and hunting.

Mr. Hewitt is survived by his wife; a son, Spc. 4th Class James Hewitt of Germany; a daughter, Jennifer Hewitt and Chris Rogers of Port Huron; his father, Mr. and Mrs. James (Cathleen) Hewitt; his mother, Josephine Hewitt of Port Huron; two brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Dan (Renee) Hewitt of Port Huron and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis (Meline) Hewitt of Beaverton; four sisters, Mary Radatz and fiancee Randy Thomas of Port Huron, Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Kathy) Marenich -of Auburn, Mr. and Mrs. Dave (Debbie) Morden and Mr. and Mrs. Sam (Lori) Schrieber of Port Huron; a special sister-in-law, Dar Knowles of Port Huron; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, George and Mary Putze and family.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray and Ida Hewitt.

Visitation will be and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday and 2:00 to 4:00 Friday in Pollock - Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 1:00p.m. Saturday in Pollock- Randall Funeral Home.

Internment will be in Caswell cemetery, Kimball Township.

Military honors will be under the auspices of Allied Veterans of St. Clair County.

William P. Hurley Jr.

William P. Hurley Jr., 75, of Bonita Springs, Fla., died Sunday November 12, 2000, in his home after an extended illness.

He was born March 26, 1925, in Trenton. He married Geraldine Mustain. She died February 5, 1987 He then married Camilla Langley on August 29, 1987

He took an early retirement from Detroit Edison Co. in order to care for his first wife, Geraldine, prior to her death.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater aboard the USS Clove. .

He was a member of Elks Lodges in Michigan and Florida and the American Legion. He loved hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Camilla Hurley of Bonita Springs, Fla.; his daughter, Kathleen Rae. (David) Doan of Fort Gratiot; his stepdaughter, Cheryl (Duane) Schaub of Olympia, Wash. his stepson, Thomas (Maria) Langley of Bellingham, Wash.; his grandchildren, William, Gregory, Jennifer and, Jessica Doan; his brother, John "Jack" (Valerie) Hurley of Marysville; and his sister, Patricia (Arthur) Firtion of Las Vegas, Nev.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sarah Lukasek, and Donna, Hurley, and a brother, Terrance Hurley.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Stan Liechty of Colonial Woods Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverlawn cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Graveside services will be under the" auspices of the St. Clair County, Allied Veterans Council.

Pallbearer's, will be John Hurley II, Joseph Hurley, Kevin Zepp, Brian Firtion; David Lukasek, Arthur Firtion Jr., Mark Day, Ralph Bopra Jr. and Rao Bondalapati. Honorary pallbearers will be John Pickering, Dennis Pickering Alan Scudder, Paul Mustain and Brad Peters.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Cary McCoy Jackson

Cary McCoy Jackson, 79, of Marysville, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2000, in the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor.

He was born July 24, 1921, in Rickman, Tennesee, to the late William J. and Verr (Webb) Jackson. He married Laura E. Stephens on April 6, 1944, in Marysville. She died June 30, 1986. He married Virginia V. Vosburgh December 30, 1988, in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Mr. Jackson worked for Port Huron Machine Products and retired from Pacer in 1992. He was a member of the Washington Avenue United Methodist Church, Fort Gratiot Methodist Church, and Fort Gratiot Masonic Lodge #347 F&AM, and was a past Grand Master.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Cary M. (Ruth) Jackson, Atlanta, Mi., and Roger S. (Cassie) Jackson, South Lyon; three granddaughters, Bill (Becky) Brand, Chad (Lori) Camp, and Molly DiStefano; three grandsons, Bret, Evan, and Nathan Jackson; a great grandson, Emmett Brand; a sister, Lucy Watson, Mason, Mi.; a step daughter, Virginia Caballero; a step son, Donald (Janet) Hall; two step grandchildren, Gene and Ginny Caballero; a special niece, Joni Ricker, Bradenton, Fla.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday in Marysville Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Marysville Funeral Home. The Rev. Susan K. Freelands of Washington Avenue United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverlawn cemetery, Marysville.

Pallbearers will be Bret, Evan, and Nathan Jackson, Bill Brand, Mike Mankowski, and Chadd Camp.

Memorials may be made to Washington Avenue United Methodist Church.

Rev. John Elliot Johnston

The Rev. John Elliott Johnston, 82, of Fort Gratiot, died Friday, November 17, 2000, in St. John's Hospital after along illness.

He was born July 18, 1918, in Port Huron to the late William and Muriel Pearl Johnston. He married Helen Maclean on August 30, 1941, in Port Huron. She died October 15, 1986, He married Phyllis Furby Dix on September 28, 1996, in Detroit.

The Rev. Johnston received his bachelor of science degree from Michigan State University, his master's degree from Wayne State University and completed his theological education at Whittaker School of Theology in Detroit.

He began his teaching career in Port Huron in 1939 and served as an officer in the U.S. Army An Corp during World War Il.

After working as an accountant in Sarnia, and for Chrysler Corp. in Detroit, he returned to teaching and was employed with the Detroit Public School System for 20 years.

In 1984, he retired from teaching to pursue a career as an ordained Episcopal priest. He served as an assistant rector at Grace Episcopal Church in Port Huron and rector of St. Andrew's in Algonac. He also assisted many other parishes in the Blue Water Area including, Trinity, Lexington; All Saints, Fair Haven; St. Paul's, Harsens Island; St. Paul's, Port Huron; and All Saints, Marysville.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 374 F&AM and Smiths Creek American Legion Post 525 and was a lifelong supporter of the arts in Port Huron and Detroit.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; four daughters, Mary H. Johnston and Dr. and Mrs. Ron (Ann) Kar, all of Detroit, Frances L. Johnston of Oakland, Calif., and Margaret E . Johnston of Port Huron; five grandchildren, Joseph and Christopher Kar, Alexander and Jonathan Snowden and Eleanor Johnston; a stepdaughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie (Trish) Hampton of Livonia; three stepsons, James Dix of Hales Corners, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. David (Denise) Dix of Troy and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Cathy) Dix of Farmington; five step grandchildren; a brother, Mr. and Mrs. William (Pat) Johnston of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. today and 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Grace Episcopal Church. The Rt. Rev. Edwin M. Leidel, Bishop of Eastern Michigan, will officiate.

Inurnment will be in the Grace Episcopal Church Columbarium. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or Mid City Nutrition.

Earl W. "Bud" Matthews

Earl W "Bud" Matthews, 65, of Marysville, died Friday, November 17, 2000, in his home. He was born May 5, 1935, in Port Huron to the late Earl and Hazel Brown Matthews. He married Mary Jane Lucas on May 26, 1958, in Lakeport.

Mr. Matthews served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years and retired with the rank of chief petty officer. After leaving the Navy, he taught electronics at the NEC Electronics School in East Detroit and the Marysville Skill Center. He also was a Prudential Insurance salesman in the Port Huron area.

He enjoyed collecting sea shells, bowling and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; a son, Bryan Matthews of Marysville; a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Bonnie) VanSickle of Madison Heights; four grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer VanSickle and Jordan and Taylor Ann Matthews; a sister, Mr. and Mrs. Marc (Mary) Wildie of Grand Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Doris and Debbie Lucas; a brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard "Beanie" (Connie) Lucas; and 15 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. today in the Marysville Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Marysville Funeral Home. The Rev. Thad Spring of Community Wesleyan Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverlawn cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jake Gamble, Michael Johnson, Edward VanNoller, Gregory Rau, Robert Prause and Steven Lucas. Memorials may be made to the

Goldie C. Mertz

Goldie C. Mertz, 92, of Marysville, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, in Mercy Hospital. She was born March 1, 1908, in Port Huron to the late Robert J. and Goldie Melissa (Hall) Nichols and was a lifelong area resident. She married Herbert E . Mertz May 10, 1930. He died Feb. 3, 1969.

Mrs. Mertz was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, the Mary Martha Guild Lutheran Ladies Auxiliary and was one of the original members of the Altar Guild.

She is survived by two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn (Beverly) Coon of Tucson, Ariz., and Constance G. Chenoski of San Bernadino, Calif.; five sons, Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. (Marilyn) Mertz, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert "Bud" (Eva) Mertz and Mr. and Mrs. Roger D. (Susan) Mertz, Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. (Evelyn "Evie" Mertz and Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Jackie) Mertz, all of Marysville; 17 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brothers in law, Charles (Mozelle) Smith, Clifford (Helen) Smith, and George Smith, all of Port Huron; sister in law, Dorothy Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty and Judith and three grandsons.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Marysville Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held and 11 a.m. Tuesday in Trinity Lutheran Church . The Rev. Robert Mann will officiate. Burial will be in Riverlawn cemetery, Marysville.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Altar Guild.

Jack Goss

Jack R. Goss, 84, of Port Huron, formerly of Oscoda, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital.

He was born May 14, 1923 in Coldwater, MI.

Jack served in the U.S. Marines during WWII. He was a skilled woodworker and painter.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elsa Goss; sons, David and James Goss; grandson David Goss, Jr.; great-grandson, Colin; and a sister, Jeanne Mosure.

Jack was preceded in death by his brother Clare Goss, Jr.

Private family services and cremation have taken place.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Donna Mullen

Donna Mullen, 71, of Fort Gratiot died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in the Evangelical Home, Port Huron.

She was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Greenwood Township to the late James Albert and Zetia Frances Bell Owens.

Mrs. Mullen retired in 1980 from Michigan Bell Telephone Co. as a supervisor. She was an avid bowler. and enjoyed traveling, bingo and needlework.

She is survived by two brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Harold (Violet) Owens of Goodells and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn (Marge) Owens of Smiths Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside committal services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, in Caswell cemetery, Kimball Township.

Arrangements are by the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.
