Janice Jane Girard
KINGSFORD - Janice Jane Girard, 74, of Kingsford died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Hyland Nursing Home.
She was born on Nov. 9, 1931, in Kingsford, daughter of Harold and Elizabeth (Grathen) Cory. Janice was a lifelong resident of the area.
She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching old movies and game shows. She was a fabulous cook and crafter.
Janice was a very dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She cherished the time she spent with her family playing games, doing craftwork and working in the kitchen.
She married Meriel Girard at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Loretto. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1994.
Janice is survived by her daughters, Lynn (Kennith) Girard Edwards of Pipe Creek, Texas, Rhea Menza of Kingsford and Loni Pietrantonio of Iron Mountain; her mother, Elizabeth Cory of Kingsford; a brother, Glenn (Anna) Cory of Spread Eagle, Wis.; sisters, Janet Beauchamp of Hardwood and Sandra (William) Johnson Kingsford; grandchildren, Morgen (Luke) Ritchie, Whitney Menza, Alyse Menza, Chase Pietrantonio and Kate Edwards; two great-grandchildren, Gavin Jon and Reece Jean; sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her infant son, Peter David Girard; her father, Harold Cory, and an infant grandson, Sam Edwards.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. at the church. Fr. Michael Woempner will officiate the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in the Norway Township cemetery.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Ardys G. Laydon
VENTURA, Calif. - Ardys G. Laydon, 80, of Ventura, died Friday, Oct 6, 2006, with her sons at her side.
Mrs. Laydon was born Dec 13, 1925, in Kingsford, daughter of the late Henry and Celia (Shock) Danielson.
Ardys and Daniel "Danny" Laydon married on Sept. 9, 1944, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. They had celebrated 58 years of marriage together.
Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by three sons, Terry (Bobbi) of Gaithersburg, Md.; Todd of Iron Mountain and Mark of Ventura; one sister, Helen (Fred) Miller of Houston and seven grandchildren, Courtney, Christopher, Stephen, Sarah, Krystal, Danielle and Rainey.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Danny; her son, Dan Jr. who passed away in July of this year; her parents, Henry and Celia; and three brothers, Loran, Tod and Donald.
Ardys attended school in Kingsford, graduating from Kingsford High School. She had lived in Kingsford, Breitung (Twin Falls area) and Iron Mountain's north side while growing up. Later, after she and Danny married , they built their home on West Hughitt Street.
Ardys worked for a time at General Controls Co. Dan also worked here and, in 1962, when General Controls decided to relocate to Illinois, Dan and Ardys felt it necessary to relocate also. Danny secured a position at their southern California division and the family moved to Burbank later that year. At that time, they were members of St. Mary and St. Joseph Church, Pine Grove Country Club and enjoyed skiing at Pine Mountain.
Following the high school graduation of youngest son, Mark, Ardys decided to follow a long-held dream to join the nursing profession. She went back to school, earning her licensed practical nursing (LPN) credentials. Ardys loved nursing so much, she again returned to school determined to become a registered nurse. Seldom seen without a textbook, she proudly attained her goal. Ardys then went on to work for St Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank where she found her greatest satisfaction working with cancer patients.
Ardys and Danny both enjoyed the typically mild California weather, spending leisure time at the ocean and at their family-built cabin in the Sequoia National Forest.
After retirement, Dan and Ardys moved from Burbank to Palm Springs, and finally to the coastal town of Ventura. They returned often to Iron Mountain, their hometown, to visit with family members and dear friends.
The family will receive friends at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon.
Graveside services will be held at cemetery Park following the visitation with Fr. Daniel Zaloga officiating.
Burial will be at cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain to handle arrangements.

Elizabeth "Betty" Boyle
VULCAN - Elizabeth "Betty" Boyle, 84, of N2100 Lahaie Drive in Vulcan, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
Elizabeth was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Dollar Bay, daughter of the late Samuel and Rose Ann (Trombley) Locatelli. She attended Dollar Bay High School.
Elizabeth married Lloyd W. Boyle on Sept. 21, 1946, in Dollar Bay. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 2002. They raised their family in Laurium, and then moved to Green Bay, Wis., where they lived for 29 years. For the past 8 1/2 months, Elizabeth lived with her daughter, Rose Marie, in Vulcan. She was a member of the Altar Society of Sacred Heart Church in Calumet and of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Elizabeth loved reading, patriotic music, and visiting with family. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making homemade cakes, cookies and saffron bread. Elizabeth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by two sons, Daniel (Tzu-Yueh) Boyle of Cottage Grove, Wis. and Michael (Beth) Boyle of Whitefish Bay, Wis.; two daughters, Rose Marie (David) Tuovila of Vulcan and Deborah (Albert) LeBlanc of Iron Mountain; two brothers, Francis (Laura) Locatelli of Florida and James Locatelli of Green Bay; a sister, Katherine Laverdiere of Green Bay; grandchildren, Dr. Lisa Boyle, Daniel (Jennifer) Boyle, Eric (Debbie) Tuovila, Steve Tuovila, Valerie (Brian) Frawley, Melanie (Jerry) Pirkola, Kathleen (Gerald) Arnold, Jennifer (Scott) Thomas and Mitchell Boyle; great-grandchildren, Logan and Matthew Pirkola, McKenzie and Johnathon Thomas, Joshua and Jacob Arnold, Ava Boyle, and Seth and Shawn Frawley; step-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Meghan and Jacob Ludtke; and special nieces, Marie Rowe, Patty Painter and Dr. Mary Limback.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Locatelli.
Private family services will be held at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet.
Entombment will be in Fort Howard Memorial Park in Green Bay.

Betty Jean "Betty Boop" Smokovitz
KINGSFORD - Betty Jean "Betty Boop" Smokovitz, 80, of 541 South Park St., Kingsford, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on Dec. 13, 1925, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late George and Frances (Maynard) Quick.
Betty was a lifelong resident of this area and had worked at various jobs.
She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Lee (Steven) Worley of Cudahy, Wis., Karen (Russell) Rosenberg of Kingsford, Debra (Salvador) Bautista of Cudahy, and Lona Jean Lessor of Milwaukee; two brothers, George (Carol) Quick of Kingsford, and Pete (Joyce) Quick of Milwaukee, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her sisters, Louise 'Weeza' Aronson, Gladys Sorenson, Annette Perry, and her brothers, Robert and James Quick.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at cemetery Park. Deacon Don Christy will officiate.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Chester Mathison
NIAGARA, Wis. - Chester Mathison, 92, of Niagara, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Florence Villa Nursing Home.
He was born on July 27, 1914, in Leona, Wis., son of the late John and Helen (Yakel) Mathison.
Chester lived in Pentoga, spending his early years in the lumber camps and attending the Lansing School for the Blind as a child.
He married the former Veronica Alsteen on July 28, 1945, and she preceded him in death in 1978. He lived in Niagara since 1947 and worked in maintenance for the Village of Niagara from 1947-1971. He was last employed by the Village of Niagara as the sexton at the cemetery.
He enjoyed listening to tape recorded books provided to him by special library services. He had a very good memory and provided a wealth of information about his family for those who were interested. In spite of his problems with his sight, he lived alone and was proud of his ability to do so.
Chester is survived by his sister in-law, Gladys Mathison; several nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Dale McNamee. He is also survived by a special friend, Ida Scott of Iron Mountain, who helped him continue to live in the independent life he desired in his last years. He is further survived by his good friends, Dawn and Neil Johnson and Harold and Grace Kinziger.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lorretta McNamee, Lourella Goldstein and Theresa Clemo, and two brothers, Bert and Ralph Mathison
There will be a graveside service on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Niagara cemetery at 2 p.m. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Ruth E. Morrell
KINGSFORD - Ruth E. Morrell, 82, of 223 Riverhills Road in Kingsford, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, where she had been receiving excellent care and compassion from the entire staff for the last four years.
She was born on May 11, 1924, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late George John and Anna Maria (Hosking) Paquin.
She graduated from L'Anse High School in 1942. She had close to 44 years of service to veterans of four wars, and those who served during peace time. During the span of those years, she herself was a U.S. Navy (Waves) veteran of World War II. She also served veterans of World War I, World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
She met and married Robert Morrell on Sept. 11, 1948, in Iron Mountain and together they just shared their 58th wedding anniversary.
Ruth began her employment at the Office of Veterans Affairs in March 1946 as a receptionist/secretary. She was named director of the Office of Veterans Affairs in March 1976, holding that position until her retirement in 1989. Following retirement, she served two terms as a Dickinson County commissioner.
She was very active in community and veterans organizations. She had served as the American Legion 12th District commander, a member of Rebecca Lodge (Odd Fellows), White Shrine of Jerusalem, Order of the Eastern Star, the Trinity United Methodist Church, and the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Zonta Club. In addition, she has coordinated the annual Iron Mountain-Kingsford Memorial Day parade and program, Fourth of July parade and program, annual countywide Veterans Day dinner and program, Dickinson County Share Your Christmas program and the March of Dimes, and served the United Way of Dickinson County as secretary and treasurer for many years. With the American Legion, in addition to commanding the 12th District, Ruth has served as 12th District alternate committeeperson, was post service officer for 11 years, 12th District service officer for three years and was 12th District and 5th zone historian for three years.
She was also a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, Camp Fire Girls leader, Sunday school teacher, Daughters of Job leader and served as treasurer of the Dickinson County Pilots Association. Along the way, her devotion to veterans, the community, her church and civic organizations has been recognized in the form of numerous awards, citations and certificates.
Ruth loved crafts, gardening, working in the yard, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of more than 58 years, Robert Morrell of Kingsford; a son, James (Wende) Morrell of Duluth; daughters, Nancy (Robert) Vassar of Rhinelander, Wis., and Judith Morrell of Florida; three grandchildren, Meaghan and Mallory Morrell and Jeremy Morrell; three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Michael and Logan Morrell; five sisters, Margaret Daniels of Florida, Carol Lindgren of Aurora, Wis., Joyce McCain of Georgia, Catherine MacNees of Iron Mountain and Dorothy (Donald) Pascal of Georgia; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Richard Paquin.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The Order of the Eastern Star service will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the funeral service with Rev. Debbie Thomas officiating. The American Legion Post 363 will conduct military honors on Wednesday at 10 a.m. followed by graveside services all at Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northwoods Airlifeline.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home with the arrangements.

Perry L. Franzoi
IRON MOUNTAIN - Perry L. Franzoi, of 915 S. Kimberly Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
Perry was born in Caspian on Oct. 17, 1918, and was the son of Paride "Perry" and Maria Emilia (Franzoi) Franzoi. He was a graduate of Iron Mountain High School and has been a resident of Iron Mountain his entire life.
Perry was veteran of World War II. In January 1942, Perry enlisted in the Army and served in the Battery B 308th Coast Artillery Barrage Balloon Battalion in Seattle, Wash. Upon his discharge from the Army, Perry worked for the Ford Motor Co. at the Kingsford Plant from 1944-1951. In 1951, Perry joined the workforce at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iron Mountain and worked there in various capacities until his medical retirement in 1974.
Perry was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, and St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church. From these experiences, Perry lived a life of an individual who was a mentor instilling sincerity, loyalty with jovial humility to his family and friends.
Perry is survived by his wife of 52 years Nan; children, Perry M. Franzoi and Ted D. Franzoi, both of Iron Mountain, Polly (Scott) DePetro of Peavy Falls and D.B. He is also survived by one brother, Louis (Joyce) Franzoi of Palm Bay, Fla., a sister, Hyacinth "Susie" (Henry "Hank") Bell of Wild Rose, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Betty O'Grady of Milwaukee; a brother-in-law, Dennis (Kathy) O'Grady of Oak Creek, Wis.; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves his grand pets, Duffy, Maggie, Blondie, Cali, Dottie and Sylvie.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of the Christian burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Family Ties locally, the Michigan Alzheimer's Association Upper Peninsula Region, 710 Chippewa Square, Marquette, Mich. 49855, or the charity of your choice
