Martha Mackie
CRYSTAL FALLS - Martha E. Mackie, 90, of Crystal Falls, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Iron County Medical Facility.
Martha was born March 30, 1916, in Foster City, the daughter of John and Sandra (Waaranmaa) Koivumaki. She was born and raised in Foster City and attended the one room schoolhouse there.
Martha attended Mission Covenant Church. She enjoyed crafts and collecting stuffed animals. In her younger years, she enjoyed berry picking.
She leaves two sisters, Elsie Johnson of Iron Mountain and Pauline Rothgarn of Iron Mountain; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
Martha was preceded in death by four brothers, Erwin, William, Arvid and Ilmar Mackie, and three sisters, Helene Isaacson, Lillian Isaacson and Helen Peterson.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Foster City cemetery. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Foster City cemetery.

Marie P. "Mary" Murphy
CRIVITZ, Wis. - Marie Philomena "Mary" Murphy, 76, of Crivitz, formerly of Niagara, Wis., died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.
She was born on Aug. 26, 1929, in Hopetown, Quebec.
Marie lived in Portland, Maine, before moving to Niagara.
She is survived by three children Richard (Robin) Stout of Orlando, Fla., Murray (Jane) Stout of Dale, Ind. and Ruth (Kenneth) Blow of Orlando, Fla.; four brothers, Harland (Libby) Gignac of Niagara, Raymond Gignac of Prince Frederick, Md., Joseph (Irene) Gignac of Owings, Md., and Perley (Frances) Hood of Merriman; three sisters, Paula (Craig) Dufresne of Felch, Linda (Warren) Anderson of Felch, and Deborah (Lloyd) Hilsabeck of Niagara; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a special friend, Melissa; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Almeda Eckerberg; her father, Louis Gignac; a daughter, Mary Stout; two sisters, Joan Soule and Sonja Anderson, and a great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Deacon Don Christy will officiate.
Burial will be in the Channing cemetery.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at NuCare in Crivitz for their tender loving care.

Ada Christesen
BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Ada Christesen, 88, of N3795 Bass Lake Road, Breitung Township, was called home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Ada was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Ellison Bay, Wis., the daughter of Herbert and Ellen Knudsen. She moved to this area in 1924 and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1935.
In 1937, she married
Herbert J. Christesen, and they lived the first 10 years of their marriage in Detroit. They returned to Iron Mountain in 1947, and they have resided here since that time. After 68 years of marriage, Herbert preceded her in death in October 2005.
Ada was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was active in the ladies circle. She was a woman of strong faith and never doubted the Lord's presence in her life.
She was employed as a part-time worker at J.C. Penney Co. for 20 years and for Farmer's Insurance for three years.
Ada was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She leaves three sons, Gerald, James (Noreen) and David (Carol), all of Iron Mountain; one daughter, Linda (Doug) Dodd of Norway; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbert (Doris) Knudsen of Kingsford; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ellis (Norma) Christesen, Vivian (Joe) Safranek, Betty (Jerome) Molitor and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves JoAnn Comer, a special friend.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Thelma (Charles) Syrjanen; her brother, Gifford (Sarah) Knudsen and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Elsa Christesen.
Ada will always be remembered for her radiant smile, love of family and in her younger years her joy of swimming. Her home was a home of open hospitality to all, with the coffee always brewing and fresh bakery on the table.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. from the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers

Charles Lauersdorf
Kingsford - Charles Herbert Lauersdorf, 63, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.
He was born on May 5, 1942, in Kingsford, the son of the late Herbert and Mary (Calvesio) Lauersdorf. Charles graduated from Kingsford High School in 1960.
On Sept. 30, 1961, he married
Mary Joanne Marchand at the old Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
He worked at Grede Foundries for 40 years until his retirement in May 2004. Chuck was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he was the pastor's helper at the Saturday night services.
He was well-known for his keen sense of humor. He wrote beautiful poetry for many of his friends for their anniversaries, birthdays, and when they were ill. He had some of his poems published in hard covered books, and he won the editor's choice award for many of these poems. He also had a short story called "Remember Me, " that was published in a magazine called "Above the Bridge."
He was also the best gardener in the neighborhood. His garden was his pride and joy, and his tomatoes were the best.
He loved his family and the family get-togethers. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary; a daughter, Lori (Kenneth) Kiltinen of Kingsford; two sons, Charles (Diane) Lauersdorf of Iron Mountain and Gary (Shari Bal) of Norway; five grandchildren, Jesse, Lacey, Mike, Quinn, and Chris; two great-grandchildren Kayla and Devin; two special aunts, Hazel Stachowicz of Kingsford and Viola Hirvo of Spring Hill, Fla.; cousins in the surrounding area; a brother-in-law, Ray Marchand; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Marchand; and a nephew, Mike Marchand .
He was preceded in death by a son, Carl in 1990.
Chuck will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Pastor Chad Ott will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Don Laitila
SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. - Don Laitila, 59, of Spread Eagle, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Bessemer on Feb. 16, 1947, son of the late Clarence and Miriam (Haanpaa) Laitila. He was a lifelong resident of the area. He served in the United States Air Force.
Don worked for We Energies as a hydro maintenance mechanic for many years. He married
Sandie Paquette on May 28, 2005, at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola.
Don was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola. He enjoyed hunting, music, traveling, collecting antiques and sports memorabilia. He was also an avid Packer and Brewer fan.
Don is survived by his wife, Sandie; children, Eric M. Laitila of Kingsford and Amy D. Laitila of Iron Mountain; children through marriage, Melissa (John) Ruzzicone of Appleton, Wis. and Larry (Jean) O'Dette of Iron Mountain; and grandchildren, Zoie Laitila, Anthony Ruzzicone and Jaimee and Ryan O'Dette.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
The funeral service will follow on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit and Loan Closet, the Florence County Rescue Squad, or any of our local hospice organizations.

Laurence Robare
IRON MOUNTAIN - Laurence "Blacky" Robare, 93, of 1003 West A St. in Iron Mountain, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at the Florence Villa Nursing Home.
He was born on March 26, 1913, in Ishpeming, the son of the late Joseph and Jenny Robare. Blacky was a graduate of Ishpeming High School.
He was a well-known amateur boxer in the Upper Peninsula, with a career that extended for 14 years, from 1929-42, and included more than 200 opponents.
Blacky entered the United States Army during World War II in 1944. He served with the famed Merrill's Marauders in the China-Burma-Indian Theater of Operations. Blacky was first scout for the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion. His unit fought with the Mars Task Force in a long range penetration, which resulted in opening an important stretch of the Burma road.
Blacky worked at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center until his retirement. He also worked as an alderman in the 4th ward for the city of Iron Mountain. He was past state commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and was the VAVS representative for Michigan and Wisconsin. Blacky was also a former UPA recreational leader and DAV administrative board member.
He is survived by his companion, Evelyn 'Dolly' Romagnoli of Iron Mountain; his son, Joseph (Cheryl) Robare of Texas; a daughter-in-law, Janet Robare of Illinois; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta; a son, Laurence; a brother, Earl; a granddaughter, Susan; and grandson, Johnny.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Monsignor James Kaczmarek will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ishpeming cemetery.

Marian Arnold
IRON MOUNTAIN - Marian J. Arnold, 80, of 1303 West A St. in Iron Mountain, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.
She was born Aug. 7, 1925, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Rudolph and Linnea (Jacobson) Johnson. Marian was a lifelong resident and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1943.
She received a degree in nursing from the Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. Marian was a registered nurse and had worked at the old General Hospital and the VA Hospital, both in Iron Mountain.
On Dec. 12, 1948, she married
Jack Arnold. He preceded her in death on April 26, 1997.
Marian was a member of the First Covenant Church and the NARFE. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her nieces and nephews at Spread Eagle and was fondly known as Auntie Bobo.
She is survived by one brother, Bill (Helen) Johnson of Iron Mountain; five nieces and nephews; Mary Couper, John Paul Tabaka, Jane (Dennis) Santini, and Sue (Jim) Saxon, all of Iron Mountain, and Tom (Debra) Johnson of Rochelle, Ill.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and one great-great niece and one great-great nephew.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers-in-laws, John Tabaka and John Bertoldi; her sister-in-law; Marie Tabaka Bertoldi; and a nephew, David Tabaka.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Covenant Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the church. Pastor Dan Wheeler will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
