Jason Reed
BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Jason Michael Reed, 25, of W9323 Peterson Drive, Breitung Township, was called Home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, as a result of a tragic accident.
Jason was born March 22, 1980 at Dickinson County Hospital. He was a 1998 graduate of Kingsford High School. Jason served in the United States Air Force from June of 1998 to June of 2002 as an avionics specialist working on F-15 fighter jets, where he received medals and certificates for outstanding achievement.
He then entered college and was an honor student at both Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University. He was entering his second year at MTU, where he was double majoring in computer and electrical engineering with plans to finish with a master's degree in business.
He was active in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and the Church of Christ in Marquette, Houghton and Iron Mountain. Jason was passionate about many things, the two greatest being the Lord and learning...about anything.
He loved both downhill and water skiing, being with family and friends, enjoying the great outdoors, working with computers, cooking, working on cars, and playing video games in any spare time. He will be most remembered for his special smile, his selfless, giving spirit and his love of life.
Jason is survived by his parents, Terry and Lynne Reed of Breitung Township; his brother, Johnathon Reed of Iron Mountain; his paternal grandparents, Gordon Sr. and Evelyn Reed of Iron Mountain; maternal grandparents, William and JoAnn Smeester of Spread Eagle, Wis. and Doris and Jack Blanchard of Breitung Township; his fiance', Rachel Ward of Kingsford and their two puppies, Shiloh and Daisy; aunts and uncles, Gordy Jr. (Alice) Reed of Breitung Township and Randy (Joni) Reed of Breitung Township.; Godmother Sharon Mead, Bill Smeester Jr. of Niagara, Wis., Julia Peterson of Kingsford, Dan (Debbie) Lantagne of Kingsford, Brian (Laurie) Smeester of Kingsford and Mike (Tara) Smeester of Florence, Wis.; his nephew, Elijiah Reed; and many cousins and other loving family and friends.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.
Burial will be in Iron Mountain cemetery Park.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Marie DeGayner
KINGSFORD - Marie M. DeGayner, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community four days after celebrating her 95th birthday with her family.
Marie was born in Marathon County, Wis., on Aug. 5, 1910, to the late Otto and Sophie (Hernke) Seeger.
Marie married Ralph DeGayner on Sept. 7, 1930, at Menominee. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1980. Ralph died the following year on July 31, 1981.
Marie graduated from Edgar High School in Edgar, Wis. in 1928, then attended Oshkosh State Normal and began her teaching career at Waukesha in the school year of 1930-31. She then taught at Central School in Iron Mountain in 1931-1932. Taking time out to rear a family of six children - five boys, Eugene, Ralph, Felton, Clayton, and Alden and one girl, Hazel Dault, she didn't get back into teaching until 1950.
In 1959, she received her bachelor of science degree and her master of the arts in 1962. She taught at Channing from 1950-1962. She taught at Champion for a year and at Republic from 1964-1968.
Marie and her husband, Ralph, moved to Deming, N.M for his health and she became a teacher with the Deming Public School System in 1968. She was honored by the Masons as Teacher of the Year in 1975, the year she was forced to retire due to ill health. She then spent 131/2 years tutoring students at Smith School and helping them with reading problems. At Smith Elementary, she was a reading specialist the last four years of her time there.
During the years before this, she taught the sixth grade. All those years of tutoring following her retirement were volunteer work without compensation.
Marie returned to the area in 1991 to live at Evergreen Heights Apartments to be closer to her family. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. DeGayner is survived by her six children; a brother, Arnold Seeger of Minneapolis; a sister, Margaret Weinkauf of Wausau, Wis.; her 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents, Sophie and Otto Seeger and her brother, George.
Teaching was Marie's life. She lived to help children learn to read and it is estimated that she has helped many thousands of students to achieve a better and successful life.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Michael March will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund.

Marcie Trepanier
IRON MOUNTAIN - Marcie H. Trepanier, 81, of Iron Mountain, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Marcie was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Elmer and Florence (Lindberg) Rahm. She was a 1941 graduate of Iron Mountain High School.
Marcie married George E. Trepanier on June 4, 1949, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1991.
She was an active member of First Covenant Church where she participated in the Christian Woman's Club and was a Bible class teacher, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and directed Vacation Bible School for twenty five years. Marcie also belonged to the Council of Protestant Church Women. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting.
Marcie is survived by her four children, Kristine (Thomas) Haglund of Stevensville, lower Michigan, Timothy (Jacquelyn) Trepanier of Shalimar, Fla., Robert (Linda) Trepanier of Chicago and Randall Trepanier of Grand Forks, N.D.; four grandchildren, Scott Trepanier of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Wayne Trepanier of Fort Lewis, Wash. and1 Ray and Benjamin Trepanier of Grand Forks.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Trepanier in 1979.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11a.m. on Saturday at the First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Rev. Peter Erickson will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Covenant Church.

Mary Bettiga
NORWAY - Mary M. Bettiga, 93, of Norway, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at the Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.
She was born Jan. 2, 1912, in Norway, daughter of the late Michael and Katherine (Topeczka) Lesnick.
Mary was a lifelong resident of Norway. She married Herman 'Chick' Bettiga on June 25, 1938, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway. He preceded her in death in 1970.
Through the years, Mary had worked for the Norway Hotel, the Needlecraft Sewing Factory, the Dickinson Inn, and Hancock Wood Products. She kept up her large yard well into her 80s and was very proud of the fact that she was a hard worker.
She loved to fish and she enjoyed dancing and would often times dance in her kitchen for exercise.
She is survived by one daughter, Janice (Martin) Allstrom of Iron Mountain; one sister; Anna Valentine of Norway; two sisters-in-law; Tillie Lesnick of Norway and Hannah Johnson of Escanaba; two grandchildren, Ann Marie Allstrom of Royal Oak, lower Michigan and Wendy Jo Allstrom Ried (Ray Wade) of Pace, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Ried of Sussex, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Lesnick and two sisters, Helen Warner and Effie Bjornson
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway. Fr. Mark McQuesten will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in the Norway Township. cemetery.
Special thanks to Dr. Hayes and Dr. Atkinson, DCMH, and Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community, for the loving care given to Mary.

James Laing
IRON MOUNTAIN - James 'Boo' Laing, 76, of 1103 Kimberly Ave., Iron Mountain, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at his home.
He was born June 8, 1929, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Roy and Luella (Hartho) Laing. Jim was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and a 1946 graduate of the Iron Mountain High School.
He also graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in business administration. Jim was a veteran of the Korean War. He owned and operated the Laing Lumber Co. with his late brother, Robert, for many years before retiring in 1983.
Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a life member of the American Legion, the Elks Club, Pine Grove Country Club, and a past member of the Chippewa Club. Jim loved walking and golf.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Jackie Laing of Spread Eagle; a niece, Dr. Susan Laing of Spokane, Wash. and a nephew, Bruce and Tara Laing of Spread Eagle and their children; Bryce Marie Laing and Hunter James Laing.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert in 2001.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Springlake Animal Shelter Building Fund.

Claude Cunningham
IRON MOUNTAIN - Claude L. Cunningham, 73, of 122 West A St., Iron Mountain, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at his home.
Claude was born May 30, 1932, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Albert and Louise (Prue) Cunningham. He lived and worked in Chicago for most of his life until moving back to the area six years ago. Claude enjoyed gardening and going to the casino. He loved his two cats very much.
Claude is survived by a son, Claude L. Cunningham Jr.; a brother, Albert Cunningham of Kansas; two sisters, Myrtle Johnson of Iron Mountain and Ramona Hane of Florida; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and seven sisters.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

David Machus
IRON MOUNTAIN - David J. Machus Sr., 76, of Aurora, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born Dec. 22, 1928, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Alexander and Louise (Kelnhofer) Machus. David was a resident of Kingsford for most of his life, until moving to Aurora.
He served with the 1st Calvary Division during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He married Aileen Johns on Oct. 20, 1951, at American Martyrs Church. Dave owned and operated Central Market in Kingsford for many years before retiring in 1989.
He was a member of American Martyrs Church and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Order of the Purple Heart, the Knights of Columbus, the Golden K and the Golden Throats. Dave enjoyed making and flying model airplanes.
He was a very faithful grandpa, attending all of his grandchildren's events and he loved all children. David had a wonderful sense of humor even to the very end.
He is survived by his wife, Aileen; six children, David (Gail) Machus of Breitung Township, James (Lori) Machus of Kingsford; Linda (Terry) Alquist of Breitung Township, John (Billie Jo) Machus of Kingsford, Teresa (Dean) Wickman of Quinnesec and Kristine (Douglas) Johnson of Kingsford; one brother, Douglas (Iris) Machus of Iron Mountain; nine grandchildren, Mark Machus, Bradley Machus (Nicole Paquin), Kimberly Machus, Russell Dumais, Jordan and Jade Wickman, Paul, Matthew and Megan Johnson; and one great-grandson, Luke Machus.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Richard, and Paul Machus.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Parish prayers will be recited at 7:45 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and 10 a.m. Saturday at American Martyrs Church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in the Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Terry Alquist, Doug Johnson, Dean Wickman, Jim Formolo, Doug Oliver, and Alan Galeazzi. Honorary pallbearers will be Clyde Luba, Russell Dumais, Donald Glaser, Bradley Machus, and Mark Machus.
