Billie (Bill) Dean Shepler

Nov. 14, 1932 - Jan. 27, 2005

Billie (Bill) Dean Shepler, age 72, of Ithaca, died January 27, 2005 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma.

Bill was born November 14, 1932 to Raymond and Rhea May (Earegood) Shepler in Alma, Michigan. Bill outlived three loving wives, Juana Beltran, whom he married April 22, 1953, she preceded him in death on December 29, 1985, he then married Louise Reeves in May of 1987, she preceded him in death in April of 1994 and Kathy Shaw, whom he married January 15, 1995, she preceded him in death on February 8, 2001.

Bill worked in a variety of occupations, he drove a truck for many years for Redmond Industries in Alma, he worked at Rite Aid in Ithaca, he prepared taxes for more than 30 years. He also worked for Michigan Bookkeeping in Saginaw, Flint, and Lansing, and did accounting out of his home. Bill served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a loyal University of Michigan football fan, and loved to golf with his brothers and mother. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and cooking. Bill enjoyed people and did not like to sit at home, he was a real flirt with the ladies.

Bill is survived by his sons, Mike Shepler of Ithaca, Manuel Shepler of St. Louis, and Art (Karol) Shepler of Saginaw; grandchildren, Neal, Nicole, Desiree, Cuyler, and Taryn; one great grandchild, Brenden; sister, Judy Fisher of Alma; half sisters, Sheila Wright of Muir and Linda Billings of Tennessee; and half brother, Randy Shepler of Carson City. He was preceded in death by his three loving wives; brothers, Art Shepler and Kenny DeLine; and baby sister, Shirley Shepler.

Services for Bill will be 11 a.m. January 31, 2005, at the Ithaca United Methodist Church. Rev. David McBride will officiate and burial will follow at North Star cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, January 29, from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday, January 30 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bernice Lucinda Snover

July 9, 1913-Jan. 27, 2005

Bernice Lucinda Snover, age 91 of Farwell, passed away January 27, 2005 at the Northwoods Nursing Center in Farwell. Bernice was born the daughter of Emory and Minnie (Korf) Kilbreath on July 9, 1913 in Imlay City. She was united in marriage to Robert Snover of December 4, 1930. She was a member of the Blue Star Mothers, and the Rebekah Lodge. Bernie was a member of the Clare Church of the Nazarene.

Bernice is survived by her five sons Robert of Arkansas, David (Patricia) of Lake, Ronald (Lucille) of Lake, Samuel (Dawn) of Farwell, and Joseph of Texas; three daughters, Betty Lou (Robert) Giddings of Vassar, Elaine Searles of Tennessee, and Marilyn (Charles) Smith of Snover. Bernice is also survived by 35 plus grandchildren, 100 plus great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, along with many other relatives and friends.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her daughter Barbara Phenix, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, and 3 grandsons.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, January 31 at 11:00 A.M. at the Clare Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jim Young officiating. Burial will be in the Surrey Twp. cemetery in Farwell. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-5 and 7-9 P.M., with a Rebekah's Lodge service at 7;30 P.M. Memorials may be made to the family of Bernice Snover. Arrangements by the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home, Inc. of Clare.

Kevin C. Tatum

July 2, 1964-Jan. 30, 2005

Kevin C. Tatum, age 40, of Mt. Pleasant, MI, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2005 at his residence.

Kevin was born July 2, 1964 in Lynwood, Ca, the son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Stokes) Tatum. Kevin was a member of the ACLU. He graduated from Montcalm Community College with an Associates degree. Kevin then went on to obtain a Bachelors degree from Grand Valley State University. He was currently attending graduate classes at Central Michigan University.

Kevin is survived by his father Kenneth of Mt. Pleasant, two daughters, Kimberly Tatum of Downey, CA and Johannah Adams of Bell Gardens, Ca. Also one sister Pamela (Marc) Proctor of Crystal and one brother James (Denise) Tatum of Stanton.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1991.

A memorial service will be held Friday, February 4, 2005 at 11a.m at Dodge Funeral Home, Middleton. Memorial contributions may be made to the ACLU.

Karin J. Hollenbeck

Feb. 23, 1941 - Feb. 1, 2005

Karin J. Hollenbeck, 63, of Mecosta, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at Mecosta County General Hospital in Big Rapids.

She was born February 23, 1941, in Highland Park, the daughter of Arnold and Jane (Smith) Roterman. In 1959, she graduated from Breckenridge High School, and then attended Ferris State College. In 1960, she married Jess N. Hollenbeck, and they made their home in the Detroit area before permanently moving to their place on Mecosta County's Blue Lake in 1998.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Arnie of Chicago and Alexander and his wife Marti of Remus; five grandsons, Arnie, Zack, Alexander II, Austin and Abraham; three brothers; one sister; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 3, at St. Paul's Campus Parish in Big Rapids, with Decon John Ashmore officiating. Spring burial will be in the Highland View cemetery in Big Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Lung Association may be left at the Mohnke Funeral Home, Big Rapids, where Karin's family will greet friends Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., and at the church prior to services on Thursday.

Christena M. Pallick

Feb. 1, 1933 - Jan. 25, 2005

Christena M. Pallick born on Feb. 1, 1933 in Mt. Pleasant, MI the daughter of Guy and Goldie Blake Thompson, passed away on January 25, 2005 and was laid to rest on January 29, 2005 at Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Dorothy Jane Marr

Nov. 11, 1925 - Jan. 27, 2005

Dorothy Jane Marr, age 79, of St. Louis, Michigan passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 31, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel with Pastor Lillian French officiating. Interment will be in Ithaca cemetery, Ithaca, Michigan. Visitation will be Sunday, January 30, 2005 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Miss Marr was born in Saginaw, Michigan on November 11, 1925 the daughter of Cecil Kirk and Florence M. (Williams) Marr. She lived most of her life in St. Louis, Michigan. She attended St. Louis High School and then Central Michigan University. She worked for the State of Michigan and for Saginaw General Hospital as a typist. She enjoyed knitting.

She is survived by one sister, Susanne and William Gray of Ithaca, MI; four brothers, Cecil and Jackie Marr of Lansing, MI, Richard and Jean Marr of Fresno, CA, Jim and Phyllis Marr of St. Louis, MI and Terry and Karen Marr of St. Louis, MI; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Molly, Jeanne, Venice and Elizabeth; and three brothers, George, Harry and Walter. Memorials may be made to Commission on Aging.

The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel.

Lillice S. Anderson

Oct. 6, 1914 - Feb. 2, 2005

Lillice S. Anderson, age 90, of Alma passed away on Feb. 2, 2005 at Gratiot Community Hospital. Visitation will take place at the Dewey Funeral Home in Alma on Fri., Feb. 4 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, February 5 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Phil Friedrick of the Alma United Methodist Church officiating.

Lillice was born on Oct. 6, 1914 to Forest and Emma (Dockter) LaPaugh in Gratiot County. On April 10, 1937 she married C. Wayne Anderson. She was an Alma High School graduate. Lillice was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was an active member of the Alma United Methodist Church. Lillice was always available for P.T.A. school activities, and scouting. She enjoyed sewing mitts for newborns and mending for the Gratiot Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Surviving are Lillices six children, Lanice Hall of Alma, Charles W. (Judy) Anderson of Alma, Cherie (John) Yost of Alma, John W. (Dorothy) Anderson of St. Johns, Christine Veenema and her friend, Ford Essex, Hans Christian (Julie) Anderson of Riverdale; 20 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; a brother, Neil (Mary) LaPaugh of Remus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Wayne in 1988; a son, David Enon; three brothers and 2 sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alma United Methodist Church or the Gratiot Community Senior Center. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

The family is being served by the Dewey Funeral Home of Alma.

Kenneth A. Cole

Oct. 28, 1922 - Feb. 2, 2005

Kenneth A. Cole, age 82, of Porter Twp. passed away Wed., Feb. 2, 2005 at his home.

Funeral services for Mr. Cole will be Fri., Feb. 4, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. from the Whiting Funeral Chapel of Breckenridge, Rev. Ron Ives will officiate with burial in the Chapel Gardens cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thurs. from 3 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Cole was born October 28, 1922 in Lafayette Twp. the son of Ernest and Elsie (Burlingame) Cole. He was married to Georgana McDonald and Mary Smith, both preceding him in death. Mr. Cole worked for Lobdell as well as farmed.

Mr. Cole is survived by six children, Coleen (Dick) Barz of Mt. Pleasant, Sandra Frost of Bellview, Kenneth G. (Bonnie) Cole of Shepherd, Scott (Kathleen) Cole of Mt. Pleasant, Ammy (Jody) Van Hatten of Rosebush, and Jammie Windsor of Indiana; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; three brothers, Keith (Donna) Cole of Breckenridge, Carl (Virginia) Cole of Merrill, Robert (Evelyn) Cole of Illinois; one sister Ilah Popiel of Detroit. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Joshuah Frost and two brothers, Wilber and Samuel Cole.

Keith H. Browand

Jan. 3, 1931 - Jan. 26, 2005

Keith H. Browand, age 74, of Elwell, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 28 at 2 p.m. at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home with Rev. Nancy Bitterling of the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Chapel Gardens cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of the services.

Keith was born January 3, 1931 in Reed City, the Son of H. Clair and Beatrice (Whalen) Browland. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 until his discharge in 1951. He married Vendla Batchelder on June 21, 1952 in Big Rapids. He worked in the meat dept. for Kroger and Wrigley's for several years and then worked as a security guard for Redmond Trailer for a short time. He retired from the Alma Police Dept. as a Lieutenant with 25 years of service to the City and was the police departments Officer of the Year recipient in 1977.

Keith was a member of the Lincoln Road United Methodist Church, a life member of the VFW Post 1454 in Alma and was a member of the Good Samaritan Club - Local 79 Highlanders, where he served as their state director, historian and photographer. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in their RV for the past few years.

He is survived by his wife, Vendla; daughter, Mara Lou (Patrick) Winn of Clare; son, Vincent Clair (Julie) Browand of White Hall, MI; six grandchildren, Trisha Lou Winn, Jason Winn, Kimberly Winn, Amy Louise Browand, Lindy Ann Browand and Rebecca Lee Browand; seven great grandchildren; and one sister, Bonnie (Robert) Bollinger of Battle Creek.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Bethany Grace Browand in 1990; a brother, Ronald Browand; and two sisters, Donna Moon and Sandy Browand.

Dorothy Jane Marr

Nov. 11, 1925 - Jan. 27, 2005

Dorothy Jane Marr, age 79, of St. Louis, Michigan passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma, Michigan.

Berniece M. Lute Nelson

May 2, 1914 - Feb. 4, 2005

Berniece M. Lute Nelson, 90, of Alma, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Schnepp Health Care Center in St. Louis.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home in Alma, with the Rev. Larry Austin officiating. Interment will be in Richland Township cemetery in Vestaburg. Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Berniece was born May 2, 1914, in Wheeler, the daughter of William R. and Flossie May (VanGuilder) Worden. She married Earl Lute on May 13, 1934, in Carson City. She lived in the Crystal area for many years and in 1967, she and her husband moved to Alabama. After her husband's death in 1986, she moved back to the area, living in Alma. She married Eugene Nelson on Oct. 14, 1989.

Berniece enjoyed music and played the violin, keyboard, harmonica and harp. She sang at weddings and funerals and was a former Sunday school teacher. She also enjoyed reading and crocheting in her spare time.

She is survived by two daughters, Ellen (Harold) Mayes of Bellevue and Carolin (Martin) Bills of Jeddo; one son, Richard (Vicki) Lute of Alma; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Worden of Colorado.

Berniece was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Lute; her second husband, Eugene Nelson in 2002; and two brothers, Floyd and Glenn Worden.

Franklin Jenner Riggle

Oct. 5, 1916 - Feb. 1, 2005

Franklin J. Riggle, 88, of Midland, celebrated life from October 5, 1916 until February 1, 2005. He was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the only child of Frank C. and Bertha Riggle. Franklin grew up in the Mt. Pleasant area, moved to Midland with his wife Virginia Dowling in 1949 and continued there, working at Dow Corning Corp. until his retirement.

He and Virginia moved to Traverse City in 1979. Following Virginia's death in 2001, Franklin returned to Midland and enjoyed his time at Riverside Place Apartments.

Franklin was very proud of his service in the Army Corps of Engineers during W.W.II . He spent several years in Alaska and then went into battle in Normandy. He enjoyed debating politics and was an active participant and local leader in the United Steelworkers of America Labor Union.

Franklin was also and avid gardner and reader. He was active in sports his entire life, first participating and later attending all of his children's and grandchildren's events.

Franklin is survived by his children, Mimi Bruder of Traverse City and Frank W. (Ellen) Riggle of Midland; his grandchildren, Matthew Bruder of Traverse City, Anne Bruder of Chapel Hill, NC, Molly Bruder of Minneapolis, MN, Jason (Karin) Surratt of Traverse City, Sarah (Jr.) Saluta of Traverse City, Adrienne (Scott) Oakley of Roswell, GA, Alyssia Riggle of Atlanta, GA, Zachary Riggle and Shelby Riggle both of Midland; great-grandchildren, Felicity Hector-Bruder, Jake and Taylor Oakley, Nathan Surratt and Clara Salutta all survive him. Franklin's special friend, Evelyn Cook of Midland also survives him.

A memorial in Franklin's name will be established with the Midland Public Schools at H.H. Dow High School for the Boys' and Girls' Tennis Teams. Memorials may be sent to: Riggle Memorial Fund, Midland Public Schools, Business Office, 600 E. Carpenter Street, Midland, MI 48640.

The family will gather for a celebration of Franklin's life at a later time. The Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter (off State) in Saginaw is serving the family.
