Miriam Aho
KINGSFORD - Miriam E. Aho, 84, of 1820 Mary's Way, Kingsford, died Monday, March 8, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain..
Miriam was born on Feb. 29, 1920, in Negaunee, the daughter of the late Consta and Elma (Annelin) Johnson. She was a graduate of Negaunee High School and received her business degree from Cleary College.
She was employed with Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 10 years prior to her marriage to her husband, Paul Aho, on May 15, 1948. They had been residents of this area since 1955. Paul preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 2004.
Miriam was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Iron Mountain, the church choir and the Lutheran Christian Women (LCW). She was active in the Community Concert Association and served as treasurer for several years. She belonged to the Finnish American Society and was a Bluebird troop leader for several years.
She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. Miriam was a avid reader and loved music, attending concerts and the theater. She enjoyed traveling, camping, archery deer hunting, going to the camp and embroidery. She also loved her cats.
She is survived by her children, Ardis (John) Koski of Marquette, Gary (Patty) Aho of Bettendorf, Iowa, Robert (Lynn) Aho of Baraga, Kristine and Julie Aho of Duluth, Minn. and Bruce Aho of Hickey Corners, lower Michigan; her grandchildren, Kristin (Craig) Wilmes of Castle Rock, Colo., Dr. Melanie (Steve) Pence of Grand Rapids, lower Michigan, Brenton Koski of Escanaba, Eric Aho of East Lansing, Karl Aho of Valparaiso, Ind., Douglas Aho of Augusta, lower Michigan, Anne Aho of Baraga and Katelind Aho of Augusta; a sister, Laina Mantyla of Negaunee; three nephews, Greg (Mary) Mantyla, Larry (Beverly) Mantyla and Alan Mantyla; and three nieces, Nancy (John) O'Neil, Sharon (Edwin) Villeneuve and Susan (Ron) Reynolds.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home and on Friday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.
Burial will be in the Negaunee cemetery.
Her six children will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church or the American Diabetes Foundation.
Miriam's family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Assisted Living, Maryhill Manor Nursing Home and Dickinson County Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care.

Alice Schultz
KINGSFORD - Alice J. Schultz, 87, formerly of 325 Osage St., Kingsford, most recently of Freeman's Nursing Home, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born July 7, 1916, in Stephenson, daughter of the late Peter and Julia (Wery) LaPoint.
She married
Arthur Schultz in 1933 and has been a resident of the area ever since. Her husband prececed her in death on Sunday, March 7, 1971.
Alice was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
She enjoyed quilting, sewing, doing crafts, and playing cards with her family and friends. Alice made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. She loved collecting antique dishes and helping her family with their collections.
Alice is survived by her children, Dorothy (Joseph) Dorfler of Cedarburg, Wis., Robert (Rosemary) Schultz of Iron Mountain, Don (Char) Schultz of Iron Mountain, Carol (Don) Wilson of Mansfield, Texas and Beverly (Ron) LaCost of Kingsford; a brother, James LaPoint of Menominee; two sisters, Claire Babitz of Sheboygan, Wis. and Laura Valcq of Menominee; 14 grandchildren, Mark (Darlene) Dorfler, Kurt (Jill) Dorfler, Craig (Karen) Dorfler, Christine Hunley, Cathy (Dave) McCash, Cynthia Schultz, Steve (Mary) Schultz, Paul (Lisa) Schultz, Allen (Kristel) Schultz, Terra Schultz, Carrie Wilson, Justin (Michelle) Wilson, Julie LaCost, and David (Danielle) LaCost; 24 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Caren Schultz and Lori Palmer; two brothers, Francis LaPoint and Hubert LaPoint; and a sister, Edna Badish.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from noon until 2 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
The funeral service will beWednesday at 2 p.m. at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Helgren
IRON MOUNTAIN - Mary E. Helgren, 69, of 1201 West B St., Iron Mountain, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born on Feb. 21, 1935, in Newberry, daughter of the late Howard and Rita (Price) Johnson.
She married
Robert Helgren on April 16, 1955, in Ishpeming. Mary spent many years in Negaunee and had been a resident of Iron Mountain since 1971.
Mary was a very faithful and devout Catholic. She was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain.
She loved her family, enjoyed traveling, camping and animals, and was an excellent cook.
Mary is survived by her husband, Robert; her children, Kathy (Jim) Fleury of Iron Mountain, Kandy (Phil) Blom of Iron Mountain, Kristen (Ron) Axberg of Kingsford, John (Pam) Helgren of Jacksonville, Fla., James Helgren of Iron Mountain, and Jeffrey Helgren of Kingsford; a brother, Donald (June) Johnson of Ishpeming; 12 grandchildren, Brad (Karen) Ellis, Jana (Jeffrey) LaPoint, Jodi Ellis, Dean (Corrie) Ellis, Katie Ellis, Kevin Ellis, Jamie Pietrantonio, Nick Pietrantonio, Michael Tramontin, Ron Paul Axberg, Joseph Axberg, Cameron Allman; two step-grandchildren, Nicholas and Anthony Fleury; four great-grandchildren, Cody and Andie Ellis, Paige and Brenden LaPoint; and a niece, Mary Kaye Grady.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford.
Funeral services will follow at noon at the church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Pietrantonio, Brad Ellis, Michael Tramontin, Jim Fleury, Phil Blom, and Ron Axberg.
A memorial will be established in her memory to the Springlake Humane Society.

Peter Schrettl
CHANNING - Peter H. Schrettl, 73, of W8440 Tobin Lane, Channing, died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain. The Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of the arrangements.
Esther Eslick
IRON MOUNTAIN - Esther V. Eslick, 100, formerly of 609 S. Iron Mountain St. died Friday, March 5, 2004, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
She was born June 6, 1903, in Milton, N.D., daughter of the late Oscar and Julia Aos.
After the family moved to Cabri, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1911, she attended Regina College in Regina, Saskatchewan for three years before entering nurse's training at St. Bonaface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
She arrived in Iron Mountain in 1926 with other Canadian nurses and married
Howard Eslick in 1929.
She was employed at the old Iron Mountain General Hospital and then from 1951 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, where she remained as head nurse on surgical floor until her retirement in 1968.
She was a member of the First District Nurses Association, serving as president for two terms and as secretary for two terms. She was also a member of the Michigan State Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association, and served as a volunteer nurse with the Red Cross blood donor program.
She was also a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Ronnie Eslick, of Elgin, Ill.; a granddaughter, Jean Marie Eslick of Chicago; and a niece and nephews in Canada.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1964; her son, John 'Jack' in 2003; and by a brother and a sister.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Alvin Peterson
BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Alvin H. Peterson, 77, of Breitung Township, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 30, 1926, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Carl and Lillian (Jaques) Peterson. He graduated from Kingsford High School.
Alvin married
Lillie Barnes on Dec. 20, 1948, and she preceded him in death on May 29, 1988.
Alvin has been a lifelong resident of the area. He worked as the plant operator for Wisconsin Electric until his retirement in July 1986. Alvin was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge #222, and the Free and Accepted Masons of Wisconsin. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and walking. He loved talking to people.
Alvin was preceded in death by a brother, Conrad Peterson.
He is survived by a son, Michael (Bobbie) Peterson of Breitung Township; grandchildren Jesse (Tanya) Peterson of Forest Grove, Ore., Chad (Tammy) Peterson of Forest Grove, Laurie Stephens of Appleton, Wis., and Josh Arcand of Kingsford; great- grandchildren Seth Peterson, Taylor and Hailey Peterson and Jordyn Stephens, and a special friend, June Moddie.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Charles Piper will officiate. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.

Mary Recore
KINGSFORD - Mary L. Recore, 80, of Kingsford, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 21, 1923, in Kingsford, daughter of Clifford and Edith (Fournier) Recore-Bruette.
Mary was born and raised in Kingsford. She spent many years in the Detroit area. In Detroit, she was employed as a licensed practical nurse for Saratoga Hospital until her retirement in 1985.
Mary was a member of American Martyrs Church, the Retired Nurses Association and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). She enjoyed carpentry, building houses and sewing.
She is survived by three sisters, Darlene (Harry) Herd of Fairborn, Ohio; Yvonne Bafile of Iron Mountain and Shirley (John) Tramontin of Quinnesec, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by two brothers, Ward and Edward Bruette.
A Memorial Mass will be held at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 9. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.

Mulford Miller
IRON MOUNTAIN - Mulford E. Miller, 91, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Mr. Miller was born in Mitchell, S.D. on March 17, 1912, son of the late Mulford Timothy and Magdalene (Salzwedel) Miller.
He spent his early years in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and then in St. James, Minn., where he graduated from high school.
He then moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he worked for the state of Minnesota until leaving for military service in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged from the Army as a master sergeant.
Following military service, he attended the University of Minnesota obtaining a degree in public administration. Mr. Miller was employed at the Veterans Administration at Fort Snelling, Minn., Wadsworth, Kan., Miles City, Mont. and at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
Since coming to Iron Mountain, Mr. Miller has been an active member of Kiwanis, Trinity United Methodist Church and the Democratic Party. He has served on the Dickinson County Canvas Board and the Dickinson County Jury Board. He was a member of the Chippewa Club and the Pine Grove County Club.
Mr. Miller enjoyed gardening and especially enjoyed teaching his granddaughters to fish.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gladys; two sons, Stephen (Dianne) Miller of Madison, N.J. and Timothy Miller of Milwaukee; four granddaughters, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Sarah and Caroline Miller.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday at noon at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
Burial will be in Canby, Minn.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Kiwanis Club.
