Ruth Fabsits
IRON MOUNTAIN--Ruth Helen Fabsits, 76, of 1205 West A St., Iron Mountain, died Sunday, December 22, 2002 at her home. She was born May 30, 1926 in Chicago, IL daughter of the late George and Inzie (Avory) Dahlgren. Ruth spent all of her life in the Chicago area until moving to Iron Mountain in May 2002 to be with her family.
She is survived by two sons, William Shwatal Sr. of Burlington, WI and Bruce Shwatal of Chicago, IL; four daughters, Judy (Dean) Gustafson of Iron Mountain, Linda (Ron) Tavonatti of Harvey, ND, Mary Shwatal of Iron Mountain and Lisa (Mark) Venegus of Plainfield, IL; a special daughter, Susan Warner of Iron Mountain; two sisters, Dorothy Allen of Bridgeview, IL and Marilyn McEarn of Bridgeview, IL; five grandchildren, Robert E. Doty, Dawn M. Farragh, Maegan A. Doty, William G. Shwatal Jr. and Douglas Plourde; and three great grandchildren, Devin M. Farragh, Payton W. Doty and Kolton H. Farragh. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo; two sisters, Peg and Betty; and one brother George.
Private family services will be held. Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

John Bernard
ANCHORAGE, AK--John Bernard Jr., 78, of Anchorage, Alaska, died of kidney failure Dec. 19, 2002, at Elmendorf hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.
Mr. Bernard was born June 14, 1924, in Iron Mountain, Mich. He completed the 11th grade before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. He served as a radioman and gunner in bombers during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947. His awards include the Purple Heart.
In 1956, he moved to Alaska. Mr. Bernard owned the Driftwood Supperclub and Penguin Club in the 1960s. During that time, he also built homes in Anchorage. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he designed and built a chain of steakhouses in Anchorage and Fairbanks including Black Angus Steak House, House of Prime Rib, Black Angus Meat Market and The Porterhouse. He also owned and operated a wholesale meat and seafood business in Anchorage and fishing guide service at Lake Iliamna.
Mr. Bernard lectured on entrepreneurship at the University of Alaska Anchorage during the 1970s. For years, he sponsored Anchorage little league baseball teams. He and his employees sent Christmas gifts to Alaska Native children in villages. Santa Claus would deliver presents in his airplane. He also sponsored a trip to Disneyland for five children from villages who achieved top academic scores.
Mr. Bernard was a lifelong member of the Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member and ardent supporter of the Alaska Culinary Union. He loved fishing at Lake Iliamna and Alexander Creek, storytelling and watching football. He was preceded in death by his mother, Tona Bernard; father, John Bernard; son, Mark Bernard; wife, Azell Bernard; and brothers, Josh Bernard and Claude Bernard. His family wrote: "Dad was an energetic, colorful and passionate man with a wide variety of interests. He loved Alaska and brought a lot of revenue to the state, providing many jobs. He was dearly loved and will be so very missed."
Mr. Bernard is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tona and Ron Greisen; sons, Claudie Bernard, John Bernard III, Josh Bernard, Kevin Bernard and Frank Bernard; and many grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday at the funeral home. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Burial will be in Iron Mountain cemetery Park.
Memorial donations may be sent to Covenant House Alaska, 609 F St., Anchorage 99501; or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 101459, Anchorage 99510-1459.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Janice Clement
IRON MOUNTAIN - Janice R. Clement, 70, of 904 W. Ludington St., Iron Mountain, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Janice, a devoted wife and mother, was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Walter Clement. She leaves five children, Mark (Marjorie) Clement of Eau Claire, Wis., Jana Clement (David Johnson) of Iron Mountain, Michael (Bernadine) Clement of Appleton, Wis., Roger Clement (Emily McLain) of Midland, lower Michigan, and Erik (Arttie) Clement of Iron Mountain; 10 grandchildren, Kimberly Clement, Paul, Brian and Aimee Weber, Sarah and Courtney Clement, Matthew and Rachel Clement and Andre and Benjamin Clement; a brother, Herbert Loeper of Sault, Canada; and two sisters, Elaine Kuenzel of West Bend, Wis., and June Monroe of Mount View, Calif. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Lola Mathiack.
Janice was active in the church and the community. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

Henry Calcari
KINGSFORD - Henry James 'Rico' Calcari, 96, of 208 Pinehurst St., Kingsford, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
He was born April 1, 1906, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Pasquale and Margaret (Scagila) Calcari. He was a lifelong resident of the area. Henry worked for Ford Motor Co. until they closed in 1951. He then worked for Kingsford Chemical, Khoury and Foley Martens until retiring. He married E. Norma Calcari on Jan. 6, 1968, in Kingsford. She preceded him in death on May 10, 1998. Henry was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford and was a charter member of the Tri-County Area Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, picking blueberries and the woods. Henry loved the company of his dog, Tammy.
He is survived by a son, William (Josie) Calcari of Iron Mountain; a daughter, Margaret (Kenneth) Fezatt of Port Washington, Wis.; two stepsons, LeRoy (Marj) St. Onge of California and Douglas (Elaine) St. Onge of Cudahy, Wis.; two step-daughters, Priscilla (Curtis) Mattson of Merriman and Sandra (Paul) Blockland of Silver Lake; a sister, Ida Selle of Kingsford; 25 grandchildren, Lou Ann (Randy), Mary Ann (Chris), Gary (Betty), Cindy, Kirk (Brenda), Alex, Sherri, Dennis (Heather), Kristina, Mary (Dan), Dan, Bob (Jane), John (Doreen), Susan, Jean (Gus), Kimberly, Kelly, Michael (Mary), Glen (Barbara), Linda, James, Carol, Marcella, Justin and Joseph; several great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Henry was also preceded in death by a brother, Bert Calcari; a sister, Anne Mioni; two stepsons, Stanley St. Onge and Myron St. Onge; a great-grandson, C.J. Fink, and his former wife, Alice (Collins) Calcari.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Norma Fewless
GOODMAN, Wis. - Norma Jean Fewless, 76, of Goodman died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born April 21, 1926, in Rankin, Ill., daughters of the late Robert and Nona (Zimmerman) Shore. Norma married Donald Fewless on July 29, 1950. She lived in Goodman since 1987. Norma enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; sons, Jay (Jeannie) Fewless of Waterford, Wis., and Glenn (Deborah) Fewless of Waterford, Wis.; a sister, Delores (Ray) Langdon of Beecher, Wis., and a granddaughter, Jessica Fewless of San Francisco, Calif.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Union Protestant Church in Goodman, Wis. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Pastor Pat Nolet will officiate. Burial will be in the Goodman cemetery in the spring.

Arthur Nelson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Arthur E. Nelson, 96, of W. Hughitt St., Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born March 16, 1906, in Granite Bluff, son of the late Charles and Anna (Olhsen) Nelson.
Arthur married Margaret Vandenbussche on June 20, 1931, in Detroit. He worked for the Buddwheel Co. for 42 years before retiring in 1970. After he retired, they returned to Iron Mountain. Arthur enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling with his wife in his younger years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; a grandson, David Nelson; four brothers, Alfred, Harold, Clarence 'Roy, ' and Bernard, and two sisters, Esther Mattson and Victoria Anderson.
Arthur is survived by a daughter, Eleanor Flynn of Iron Mountain; a son, Raymond (Rose) Nelson of Granite Bluff; three grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Bruce Lindscheid will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

David Nelson
IRON MOUNTAIN - David Allan Nelson, 47, of 16318 Nicolai Ave., Eastpointe, lower Michigan, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
David was born Jan. 17, 1955, in Detroit, son of Raymond and Rose Marie (Peruski) Nelson. He was a lifelong resident of the Detroit area. He was a member of St. Claire Shores Eagles Club. David loved hunting, boating and working with his hands. He loved his girls very much.
David is survived by three daughters, Bridget (Randy) Anderson of Iron Mountain, Amy Nelson of Macomb Township, lower Michigan, and Amber Nelson of Roseville, lower Michigan; his parents, Raymond and Rose Nelson of Iron Mountain; a brother, Douglas Nelson of Iron Mountain; 15 grandchildren, Crystal, Kimberly, Hayley, Randi, Justin, Tyler, Quinn, Hannah, Danion, Jesse, Lindsey, Sean, Chelsea, Samantha and Taylor; two stepdaughters, Dawn Chunko and Tara Husketh, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Bruce Linscheid will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Daniel Laydon
IRON MOUNTAIN - Daniel E. Laydon, 81, of Ventura, Calif., died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Laydon was born Oct. 17, 1921, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Daniel and Catherine (Eischen) Laydon. He and Ardys Danielson married on Sept. 9, 1944, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary this year.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Ardys; four sons, Terry (Bobbi) of Gathersburg, Md., Todd of Iron Mountain, Daniel (Carol) of Lincoln, Calif., and Mark of Ventura, and seven grandchildren, Courtney, Christopher, Stephen, Sarah, Crystal Lee, Danielle and Raynee.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Daniel and Catherine, and two brothers, Charles and Robert.
He attended school in Iron Mountain, played football and graduated from Iron Mountain High School with the class of 1939. Daniel entered the U.S. Navy, but was discharged honorably due to a childhood eye injury. He worked for several local companies including Walter Firm Plumbing and the Ford Motor Co., where he built components for 'woodies' and World War II gliders. When the Ford plant closed he went to work for General Controls Co. It was in 1962, when General Controls decided to relocate to Illinois, that Daniel and Ardys felt it necessary to relocate also. Daniel secured a position at their southern California division and the family moved to Burbank later that year. At that time they were members of St. Mary and St. Joseph's Church and Pine Grove Country Club. Daniel, always an involved family man, enjoyed many activities through the years, particularly construction. He and Ardys planned and built a cabin in the Sequoia Mountains as a family project with their four son 'crew.' It was here that the family enjoyed many 'getaway' weekends among the redwoods and trout streams. After retirement, Dan and Ardys moved from Burbank to Palm Springs and finally to the coastal area of Ventura.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Graveside services will be held following the visitation at cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. Fr. Dan Zaloga will conduct the graveside services. Burial will be in cemetery Park.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain to handle the arrangements.

Anne Karas
CHANNING - Anne Marie Karas, 88, a longtime resident of Channing, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at home in Southfield, Mich. after a long illness. She was born June 5, 1914, in Sault Ste. Marie, daughter of the late Peter and Louise Sobas. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Channing. Mrs. Karas worked for many years as a department supervisor for Conrail Railroad.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Karas; two sisters, Stephanie Janik and Margie Janik; and two brothers, Jes and Walter Sobas.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirl M. Hetu of Westland, Mich. and Jean M. Kinnard of Onaway, Mich.; a son, Dennis M. Karas of Southfield; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held in the spring at St. Rose Church in Channing.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is assisting the family with local arrangements.

Alice Simonetti
IRON MOUNTAIN - Alice M. Simonetti, 78, of Loretto was reunited with her loving husband Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002.
Alice was born March 11, 1924, in Bergen, Wis., daughter of the late Frederick and Maggie Mae (Witz) Hulce. She married Nick Simonetti on Oct. 5, 1946, in Loretto. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1983. Alice had been a resident of this area her entire life. She was a very active member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Loretto. She was also very involved as a member and leader in the 4-H Home Extension for more than 20 years. Alice operated a day care in her home for many years. She did volunteer work for Holy Spirit School and enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking and just being grandma.
Alice is survived by four children, Catherine (John) Baciak of Hamilton Lakes, Fred (Lorrie) Simonetti of Kona, Hawaii, Sheila (James) Tarvis of Loretto and Lane (Kirk) Brown of Chesaning, lower Michigan; a special friend, Susan Bouche of Norway; four brothers, Donald (Nancy) Hulce of Norway, Wayne (Mary) Hulce of Norway, Lyle (Gloria) Hulce of Vulcan and Frank (Phyllis) Hulce of Colorado; four sisters, June Hirte of Kingsford, Pauline (John) King of Waucedah, Wanda Hulce of Kingsford and Lois Anne (Ernest) Guiliani of Kingsford; grandchildren, Michelle (Paul) Chartier, John Baciak III, Lynn (Mark) McCarthy, Letty (Steve) Lantagne, Ryan (Lori) Milligan, Tiffany (Bill) Milligan, Dan (Cathy) Ferris and Domanic (Kristie) Brown; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Paige Chartier, Kayla DeBakker, Hunter McCarthy, Courtney and Nicholas Lantagne, and many special nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed and forever loved.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Fr. William Callari will officiate. Burial will be in the Norway Township cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Following the graveside service, a luncheon will be served in the St. Barbara Catholic Church hall in Vulcan.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
