Anna Rizzardi
IRON MOUNTAIN - Anna A. Rizzardi, 86, of Iron Mountain, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the Hyland Nursing Home.
She was born May 1, 1916, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Rizzardi. Anna graduated from Iron Mountain High School as class valedictorian and attended the University of Michigan and Eastern University, graduating with a B.S. and a M.S. degree in special education. After her brothers were drafted in the U.S. Army, she joined the Women's Army Corps, serving three years and was honorably discharged at the end of World War II at Fort Dix, N.Y. She enrolled at Columbia University and studied for a Ph.D in clinical psychology on the G.I. Bill. Anna became the manager of psychological services at the East Meadow School System in Long Island, N.Y., a department she had developed. She served there until her retirement in 1985, when she returned to Iron Mountain.
Anna is survived by brothers, Tony (Jerry) Rizzardi of Sandusky, lower Michigan, Frank (Liz) Rizzardi of Torrance, Calif., Joe (Elaine) Rizzardi of Jackson, lower Michigan, and Albert Rizzardi of Leesburg, Ga.; seven nieces and seven nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Rizzardi.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Myrtle Gall
IRON MOUNTAIN - Myrtle Heline Gall, 92, of 600 East E St., Iron Mountain, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born May 26, 1910, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Albin and Sophia (Jensen) Nelson. Myrtle graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1928, and earned a pin in typing. She wrote her first poem entitled, 'Superior Lake, ' at age 17. Myrtle had a poem entitled, 'The Trunk, ' published in a local book, 'Tales of Yesteryear.' The book is on display at the Menominee Range Historical Museum in Iron Mountain. 'The Trunk, ' a story of her father's immigration, was recommended for publication in several magazines, including Michigan History and Reader's Digest. The recommendation was made by Dr. Robert Gard, professor of composition and rhetoric at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Myrtle also enjoyed writing plays as a hobby. She attended writer's workshops in Michigan and Wisconsin through scholarships she received. Her first appearance on stage was in Mary Chase's three act comedy, 'Harvey' in Kingsford. She continued her interest in creative and historical writing until 1991.
In addition to writing, Myrtle enjoyed flowers, deer, traveling, reading the Bible and watching the 700 Club. Myrtle loved her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives. She also loved her church family, friends and neighbors. Her family will remember her as a very strong person with high values.
Myrtle is survived by one daughter, Faye Kutzleb of Oshkosh, Wis.; a son, Robert Gall of Oconto, Wis.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Nelson (daughter Cris); and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece Patricia Mazzello (Patricka).
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick Gall; two brothers, George and Edgar Nelson; and two sisters, Alice and Lucille.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Services celebrating Myrtle's life will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Wilton will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Myrtle's family appreciates the care and concern given by the Florence Villa Nursing Home and Dickinson County Memorial Hospital staffs. John Menza
IRON MOUNTAIN - John P. Menza, 89, of 900 W. Hughitt St., Iron Mountain, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003.
John was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Pentoga, son of the late Joseph and Clara (Belongi) Menza. He was a 1933 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II in England and France. He married
the former Elizabeth Steiner on May 31, 1941, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. John worked as an operating engineer at Champion Inc. for Local 324 for more than 40 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain and a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 324. John was an excellent carpenter and loved to build and do woodwork. He especially loved helping others.
John was preceded in death by three brothers, Alfred, Walter and Jim Menza and two sisters, Mae DeWayne and Clarabelle Patterson.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Robert (Anne) Menza of Spread Eagle, Wis.; two daughters, Marlene (Jon) Davison of Lakeville, Minn. and Marianne Menza at home; five grandchildren, Scott and Craig Davison, Jill Krance, and Chad and Marissa Menza; three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Sydnie and Zachary Davison; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Carmelite Monastery. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Scott and Craig Davison, John and Peter Webb, and Chad and William Menza.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Carmelite Monastery.

Elizabeth Anderson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Elizabeth A. Anderson, 104, of Iron Mountain died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
Elizabeth was born Nov. 14, 1898, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late William and Annie (Martin) Anderson. She had been a resident of Iron Mountain her entire life. She married
her husband, Joseph Anderson in March of 1921, in Iron Mountain. Elizabeth was a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She served as president of the general circle and was the treasurer and rug chairman of the West Side Workshop (her very special group). She made many beautiful afghans and crocheted hundreds of hot pads. Elizabeth loved dolls, and had many that she loved to show people. She was a member of the Iron Mountain Chapter 44 Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine. Over the years she made pasties at the Masonic Temple. Elizabeth enjoyed the four years she spent as a resident of Evergreen Assisted Living.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, June and Charles Hudson, four brothers and five sisters.
Elizabeth is survived by her son, Joseph (Freda) Anderson of Findlay, Ohio; her daughter, Greta (Archie) Betti of Iron Mountain; grandchildren, William Hudson, Scott (Adele) Anderson, Holly (Mike) Wortman, Brooke Arredondo, Michael (Lori) Betti, Patti (Brett) Ebertsch and Tom (Julie) Betti; great-grandchildren, Amy (Shane) Stagnolia, Nicolas Arredondo, Joseph, Jason and Erica Ebertsch, Natalie and Anthony Betti, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Order of the Eastern Star services will be held at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory to Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.

Georgia Nick
SPREAD EAGLE, WI - Georgia L. Nick, 74, of 5030 Tall Pines Rd., Spread Eagle, formerly of Milwaukee, WI, died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born December 12, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI daughter of the late George and Marie (Valente) Mueller.
Georgia married
Frederick L. Nick on June 12, 1948 in Milwaukee, WI. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1995.
She is survived by two sons, Daniel Nick of Spread Eagle, WI and Frederick (Sam) Nick of Wauwatosa, WI; a brother, Edward Mueller of Del Ray Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Freddy D, Zachary and Kaitlyn; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Private family services were held with Rev. Martin Koeller officiating.
Burial will be at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, WI.

Lauren Kosovec
IRON MOUNTAIN - Lauren Ann Kosovec, 22, of Minneapolis, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, of a pulmonary embolism.
She was born March 26, 1980, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, Wis. She attended Kennedy Elementary School, Schenk (Whitehorse) Middle School and graduated with honors from Edgewood High School in 1998.
Lauren was a member of the Monona diving team and Kehl's School of Dance. She was an avid tennis player on her high school team and was thrilled to be able to go to Wimbledon and the U.S. Open tournaments.
She was a member of the Madison Curling Club and curled in the mixed league with her father; played in the handbell choir with her mother at St. Dennis Church; and also enjoyed skiing, playing card games and watching movies.
Lauren was a senior studying mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis. Her junior year, she studied in Winterthur, Switzerland at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences Switzerland, Global Seminar 2001.
She loved cars, especially Corvettes, but she became a fan of the Audi TT when she got to tour the Audi plant in Germany on her seminar. She dreamed of returning to Germany to work as an automotive engineer.
Lauren was recently diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a common, yet often undiagnosed condition that affects nearly five million American women. She wrote in her last paper for composition class that she was happy to be diagnosed. Lauren joined a PCOS Listserv and she said it was 'very uplifting' to meet so many women who could relate to her symptoms and problems caused by the condition. She felt very strongly that people need to be informed of this disease and find a way to cure it.
She is survived by her parents, Michael and Linda of Madison; her sister, Michelle of St. Paul, Minn.; her beloved kitty, Daisy; her maternal grandparents, Laurence and Patricia Varda of Kingsford; paternal grandparents, John and Lenore Kosovec of Kingsford, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends she adored.
Lauren was preceded in death by her aunt and godmother, Denise Kosovec Ghere.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Gunderson East Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Gunderson East Funeral Home.
Visitation will also be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Prayer services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Michael Woempner will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Robert Varda, Matthew Ghere, Brian Ghere, Daniel Ghere, James Ghere Jr., and Anthony Hart.
Honorary pallbearer is Eric Kosovec.
Lauren's family asks that donations be made in her name to the Polycystic Ovarian Association, Inc.
Her beautiful smile and her sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Lauren felt very strongly about helping others and is an organ donor.

Signie Larsen
IRON MOUNTAIN - Signie M. Larsen, 94, of Quinnesec, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.
She was born Nov. 22, 1908 in Amasa, the daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Isakas) Berglund. She had been a resident of this area for most of her life and was a 1927 graduate of Amasa High School. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Northern Michigan University and attended Wayne State University. She married
William O. Larsen on July 8, 1942 and he preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1995. Signie was an elementary school teacher for several school districts in Michigan and retired from the Norway School System in 1972. She was a member of the Quinnesec United Methodist Church and a former member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP). Signie enjoyed nature, especially birds, flowers, and the time she spent fishing at the old family farm in Amasa.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Dale; a brother, Axel Berglund; and three sisters, Sophie Mickelson, Ellen Johnson and Irene Anderson.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews including, Annette Jarvi of Crystal Falls, Evelyne Larson of Negaunee, Roxanne (Hager) Anderson of Quinnesec and Virginia 'Dinnie' (Frank) Irish of Quinnesec; and many grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Pauline Rupe will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
A memorial will be established in her memory to the Quinnesec United Methodist Church in Quinnesec.

Mrs. Randi Schmitt
FLORENCE, Wis. - Randi S. Schmitt, 87, of Florence, formerly of Racine, Wis., woke to eternal life on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003.
She was born March 28, 1915, in Oslo, Norway, and came to Calumet in 1920. She was the daughter of the late Arvid and Ragnhild (Helgesen) Hansen. The Hansen family moved to the Iron Mountain-Kingsford area where she met and married
Frederick Schmitt on March 25, 1937, in Iron Mountain. In 2002 they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in Racine, Wis., where they had lived since 1949. Randi worked as a certified nurse's assistant at St. Luke's Hospital in Racine, retiring in 1975 to become a domestic engineer. She was a former member of First Covenant Church of Iron Mountain and had sung in the church choir. Randi most recently belong to Calvary Memorial Church in Racine, where for many years she enjoyed teaching Sunday school. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music, playing piano and reading her Bible. She especially enjoyed spending time with her husband, children and her sisters.
Randi was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Morris Hansen, and two sisters, Anna Hansen and Ruth Trask.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Schmitt of Crystal Falls; four children, Yvonne (Ed) Willis of Racine, Fred (Karen) Schmitt of Racine, Larry (Virginia) Schmitt of Miami, Fla., and Darlene (Bob) Taylor of Crystal Falls; seven grandchildren, Jeanne Willis of Racine, Larry (Sherri) Schmitt of Boynton Beach, Fla., Dan (Karen) Schmitt of Fayetteville, Ga., Mike (Julie) Willis of Racine, Steve (Karen) Schmitt of Racine, Chris Willis of Racine, Liz (Jerry) McCann of Kenya, Africa; 11 great-grandchildren, Kevin, Amber, Josh, Brieanna and Nathan Willis, Rebecca, Katie, Laura, Stephanie, Brittany and Shelby Schmitt, and four sisters, Sigrid Raymond of Iron Mountain, Lilly (Darwin) Wilson of Iron Mountain, Carole (Richard) Smart of Quinnesec and Donna (Jerry) Kriegl of Quinnesec.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. Ronald Wolfe will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn cemetery in Racine.
