Merle Carlson Nelson
Kingsford - Merle Carlson Nelson, 99, formerly of 905 Withworth Ave. Kingsford, MI died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 at the Hyland Nursing Home. She was born April 20, 1908 in Michigamme, MI, daughter of the late Albert and Ada (Kingstrand) Olson. Merle graduated from Michigamme High School and attended 2 years at Marquette Normal College (NMU), receiving a degree in teaching. She married
Frank Carlson on Sept. 20, 1928 in Iron Mountain . He preceded her in death in 1959. In 1962, Merle married
Don Nelson and he preceded her in death in 1986. She was a resident of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford area for nearly 80 years. Merle taught for many years at the Amidon School and Garden Village School, retiring in 1967. She took great pride in her teaching career and enjoyed when former students remembered her. She was a member of American Martyr's Church, and a former member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Iron Mtn.-Kingsford Women's Club. Merle enjoyed reading, watching birds, and quilting. She made quilts for nearly all her grandchildren throughout the years.

10 Grandchildren: Allen, Lisa, Tom, Joy, Gail, Mark, Micheal, Cynthia, Diana, and Eric.
9 step children; Alice Brown, Merlin Nelson, Donald Nelson, Irving Nelson, Carol Fautner, Mavis Powell, Norma Scolatti, Allen Nelson, and Patricia Nolf.
Many great grandchildren, numerous step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, and step great-great grandchildren.
Prededed in death by 1 daughter, Josephine Kanik, 1 step daughter, Catherine Gulash, 4 brothers, Albert, Clyde, John, and Earl Olson, and a daughter-in-law Ernestine Carlson.
Private family services will be held Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Father Joseph Gouin will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park. Family members will serve as pallbearrers
Memorials can be made to the Dickinson County Library in her memory.

Beverly A. Gauthier
Iron Mountain - Beverly Anne Gauthier, 66 of 301 Madison, Iron Mountain passed away May 6, 2007, at Marquette General Hospital. Beverly was born September 5, 1940, daughter of the late Emil and Lucile (Paquin) Gauthier. She was born and raised in this area and was a graduate of Kingsford High Schoolin 1960. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed camping and sitting by the campfire.
Beverly is survived by a son Perry (Kathy) Gould of Felch, a daughter, Vicky Gould of Kingsford, five brothers, Jim (Gaile) Gauthier and Bob (Bev) Gauthier both of Oklahoma, Lloyd (Karen) Gauthier of Iron Mountain, Larry Gauthier of Texas and Gary Gauthier of Kingsford. Nine grandchildren, Jeremy Gould, Chad and Jeff Fredy, Donald Sanderson, Ryan Wille, Haley and Kyle Holmberg, Anita Gould and Michael Gould. Three great grandchildren, Alexis, Quintyn and Rylie. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday May 10th from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash funeral home. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be at cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Jesse R. Snowdon
Kingsford - Jesse R. Snowdon, 26, of 913 Withworth Ave. Kingsford, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Jesse was born on November 16, 1980 in Iron Mountain, son of Randy Snowdon and Laurie Richard. He graduated from Escanaba High School in 1999. Jesse loved music, playing the guitar and making people laugh. He was always the life of the party and lived life to the fullest. He was a loyal friend and most of all, Jesse loved his fiance and family very much.
He is survived by his parents, Randy (Susan) Snowdon of Escanaba and Laurie Richard (Marc Hagerty) of Kingsford; a brother, Jeffrey Snowdon of Missouri (U.S. Army); sisters, Jennifer (Jason) Pepin of Escanaba and Desiree Callouette of Grand Rapids; his fiancé, Jessica Fraker of Kingsford; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Bev (Brault) Richard; paternal grandparents, James (Joyce) Snowdon of Vulcan and Joan Snowdon of Iron Mountain; aunts and uncles, Ken (Jean) Richard, David (Shannon) Richard, Mike (Cara) Snowdon, Lori (Ron) Noskey, and Janet "Auntie J.J." (Pat) Maraccini; and many step relatives.
Jesse was preceded in death by an uncle, Jeff Snowdon.
Visitation will be on Saturday from 11:00am to 2:00pm CST at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm CST at the funeral home. Rev. James Holmberg of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

David D. Hertig
Niagara - David D. Hertig, 46, a Wisconsin State Trooper, of Menomonie, WI formerly of Niagara, passed away on Feb. 13, 2007 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital at 10:30 am. He was born on Dec. 11, 1960 in Iron Mountain, the son of Donald and Marilyn (Leonard) Hertig.
David graduated from Niagara High School in 1979 and from Northwest Technical College with a degree in accounting.
David was a dedicated Wisconsin State Trooper for eighteen years. He was very proud of his work and knew the importance of it. He worked at Newton on Interstate 43, Highways 441, and 41 while living in Green Bay. He also worked in Marinette and Oconto Counties (out of the Wausau District) and lived in Crivitz. He then went to work in the Northwest region of Menomonie and Eau Claire, living in Menomonie.
He was a certified state fire arms instructor and professional communication skills instructor. He taught the State Troopers and the county and city police officers firearm safety at the state training facility in Tomah.
David had a passion for guns and hunting. He enjoyed hunting deer, elk, pheasant, and partridge. He went on many hunting trips to one of his favorite places, the Rocky Mountains. He also enjoyed horseback riding and making saddles.
David is survived by his father Donald Hertig of Niagara, his sisters Denise (Dan) Duke of Sobieski, WI, and Dani (Mike) Poquette of Iron Mountain, his niece Casey Poquette, and his nephews Josh Poquette, Aaron, Colin, and Ian Duke, his uncle Harold (Sharon) Hertig, and many cousins.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Hertig in 2002.
Visitation will be Sat. From 9am-12 noon at the Premiere Center in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 12noon Sat. at the Premiere Center. Rev. David Snyder will officiate and The Wisconsin State Patrol Honors System will have an Honor Guard.
Burial will be in the Niagara cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.

Martha Erickson
Kingsford - Martha A. Erickson, 75, of 218 Fulton St., passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming. Martha was born on April 1, 1931 in Menominee. She was the daughter of the late Julian C. and Appolonia M. (Venn) Vandecasteele. Martha was a 1949 graduate of Kingsford High School and has been a resident of Kingsford her entire life. She married
Harold G. Erickson on February 7, 1953 at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford, they recently celebrated their fifty-fourth wedding anninversary. Martha worked for several years as a caregiver at Trico Opportunities. She was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Church. Martha enjoyed playing cards with her card club, traveling and going to the casino. She also performed in the Amidon Follies for several years.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters.
Martha is survived by her children, Mark (Nona) Erickson of Witch Lake, MI, Michael (Anita Anys) Erickson of Norway, Marie (Terry Glanville) Erickson of Norway and Marvin (Kristen) Erickson of Quinnesec.
Grandchildren, Holly Mitchell, Heidi, Adam and Lee Erickson, Christy Sanford, Dale Larson, Anthony Larson, Joshua Larson, Jesse and Michelle Erickson, Jacob and Katie Erickson. Six great grandchildren and special friends, Eleanor Pera, Lena Perdue, Carol Cheney and Edna Boerner.
Visitation will be on Sunday Feb. 25, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Monday at 11:00am from St. Mary and St. Joseph Church in Iron Mountain.
Fr. Paul Nomellini will offer the Mass of the Christian burial.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery

Carol J. Villars
Iron Mountain - Carol J. Villars, 82, of Iron Mountain, died Thurs. March 8, 2007 at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford. She was born on June 19, 1924 in Mishawaka, IN the daughter of the late Walter C. and Bessie A. (Hall) Kettring.
Carol graduated from Mishawaka High School and attended Indiana Unversity.
Her first husband, H. Bennett Gardner, died in 1963. She married
Guy M. Villars on Oct. 23, 1976 in South Bend, IN . Before her retirement, she was employed by the Internal Revenue Service in South Bend as a Field Auditor. She had been a resident of Kingsford since 1983.
She loved being with her family and spent many hours cooking and sewing. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.
She is survived by two sons, Larry (Carolyn) Gardner of Granger, IN, and James (Marianne) Gardner of Iron Mountain, a daughter Patricia Villars of Indianapolis, IN, five grandchildren Todd (Stephanie) Gardner, Karen (Brant) Duhn, Andy (Christina) Gardner, Steve Gardner, and Christina Gardner, and five great grandchildren Caroline and Samuel Gardner, Clifford "C.J." and Krysta Ann Gardner and Noah Gardner.
She was preceded in death by a grandson Clifford Gardner.
Visitation will be Mon. from 9-10:30am at First Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be Mon. at 10:30am at the church. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be maded to the First Presbyterian Church.

Vern Johnson
SAGOLA - Vern L. Johnson, 85, of Wells Grade Road, Sagola, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
He was born May 28, 1917, in Rhinelander, Wis., son of the late Edward and Ida (Motquin) Johnson. He had been a resident of the area for most of his life. He attended Iron Mountain schools and served with the United States Army during World War II.
Vern retired after working for the Milwaukee Road Railroad for 30 years. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola, the Cucculi-Baraga American Legion Post, the Channing Sportsman's Club and the Sagola Senior Citizens Center, where he delivered meals to shut-ins. Vern enjoyed playing cribbage, hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Rick Bates; six brothers; and one sister.
He is survived by four sons, Frank (Wanda) Ketola of South Carolina, Russell Ketola of Arizona, Vern (Judi) Johnson of Arizona and David (Angela) Johnson of Wisconsin; five daughters, Dora Johnson of Arizona, Elizabeth Wiegert of Washington, Marlene Tovar of Wisconsin, JoAnn (Marvin) Marheine of Wisconsin and Shirley (Roddy) Bennetts of Sagola; his former wife, Vivian Johnson of Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 5th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Clarence Hirte
KINGSFORD--Clarence H. Hirte, 78, of 544 Hemlock St. Kingsford, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at Jacobetti Veterans Home in Marquette. Clarence was born November 10, 1924 in Ladysmith, WI. He was the son of the late William and Emelia (Fischer) Hirte. Clarence married
the former June Hulce on March 14, 1942 in Iron Mountain. He was an honorably discharged Navy veteran of WWII. Clarence worked through the Laborers Union Local 1329 for 32 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford and Carpenter-Clash American Legion Post 363 in Kingsford. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Clarence was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
He is survived by his wife June; a son, Rodney (Barbara) Hirte of Aurora, WI; daughters, Muriel (Wayne) Guy of Omro, WI and Carol (Bob) Guy of Iron Mountain; a brother, Emil (Beaulah) Hirte of Wallace, Idaho; a sister, Bernice Nixdorf of Florida; a sister in law Pearl Hirte of Pembine, WI; eight grandchildren, Dean (Linda) Guy, David (Debbie) Guy, Kenneth (Kimberly) Guy, Valerie Guy, Wendy (Bill) Prange, Tom (Beth) Bray, Bob (Nicole) Bray and Scott (Char) Bray; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 29, 2002 from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Kingsford Funeral Home and from 9:00 to 11:00am Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Carpenter-Clash American Legion Post 363 will conduct memorial services at 6:00pm on Friday evening at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. Rev. Martin Koeller will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery. His grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Leo Rice Jr.
IRON MOUNTAIN - Leo C. Rice Jr., 74, of Flint, formerly of Kingsford, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 21, 2002, at Tampa General Hospital following heart surgery.
Leo was born April 17, 1928 in Kingsford, son of the late Leo and Hazel (Vandehey) Rice. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1946. Leo was self-employed in car sales for many years. He enjoyed sporting events and loved the Green Bay Packers.
Leo was preceded in death by his son, Michael Ray Rice; and a daughter, Pamala Jean Rice; and by five brothers, Jackie, Melvin, James, Robert, and Bernard Rice.
Leo is survived by his son, Timothy Rice of Tampa Bay, Fl.; two daughters, Kay Rice Ellis of Saline, and Kimberly Damron of Tampa, Fl.; his long-time companion, Donna Evans of Flint; a brother, William (Delores) Rice of Kingsford; four grandchildren, Molly and Martin Rice and Megan and Trevor Danron; sisters-in-law Lois and Shirley Rice; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Parish prayers will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. His life will be celebrated with gratitude and joy at 11 a.m. Tuesday at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. Father Joseph Gouin and Fr. Chris Gardner will concelebrate the Mass of the Christian Burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Randy, Terry, Paul, and Larry Rice, Brad Machus, Dave LaVarnway, and Jon Olson.
A memorial will be established in his memory to the Northwoods Airlifeline.
