Bernard "Bernie" Gallino
IRON MOUNTAIN - Bernard L. 'Bernie' Gallino, 82, of 1311 S. Kimberly Ave., Iron Mountain, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his home.
Bernie was born Sept. 17, 1925, in Norway. He graduated from Vulcan High School in 1944. In his senior year of 1943, Bernie was drafted in the U.S. Army and his mother attended his high school graduation in 1944 to accept his diploma. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 with the 9th Infantry Division 39th Regiment in the European Theater of War.
Bernie attended Michigan State University from 1946 to 1949. He began employment with the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain in 1950 and retired in 1989 as the chief of fiscal services. Two of his 39 years of employment with the VA were spent at the VA Hospital in Miles City, Mont.
Bernie married
Mary Ellen Godin on Oct. 8, 1955, in Perkins, Mich. Bernie was a past volunteer probation officer, was a member of the Iron Mountain City Council for 12 years, served on his church parish council, and was secretary-treasurer of the Rotary Club. He currently was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Church for 53 years, the DAV, Elks Club, and the Iron Mountain Housing Commission.
Bernie was a very avid gardener and loved spending the summer months tending to his vegetable garden; producing each summer a bounty of tomatoes for family and friends. The biggest loves in his life were his family, attending his grandchildren's sporting events, and Green Bay Packer football games.
After attending his first Super Bowl in 1997 with his family, his parting words as he left the New Orleans Superdome were 'I'll now die a happy man as I got to attend a Packer super bowl with my three children.'
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellen; daughters, Mary (Tom) Wendt; Ann (Michael) Sokop, and son, Joe (Carol) Gallino; seven grandchildren, Jacob and Jackie Sokop, Heather, Lindsay, Sheena, Vincent, and Angelo Gallino; a sister, Frances Gray and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Secondo and Rose Gallino, brothers, Jack and Victor Gallino and sisters, Angeline Johnson and Jeanne Menapace.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Gertrude Poisson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Gertrude C. 'Trudy' Poisson ended her earthly journey peacefully and in the embrace of her family on Sunday, March 16, 2008.
She was born the daughter of Fred and Rose DeMolen on April 12, 1921, in Menominee. Her childhood years were spent in Kingsford and she was graduate of Kingsford High School.
She enjoyed a brief career in cosmetology prior to her marriage to Raymond E. Poisson on April 26, 1941, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church in Iron Mountain.
Sixty-six years of loving companionship and devotion to each other and their family followed and will continue to inspire their children, grandchildren and all who knew and loved them. Trudy's life work was caring for her husband and her family. She also loved tending her beautiful flowers, watching the birds, helping family and friends, camping weekends, sewing, quiet moments, babies and reading her well-worn prayer book.
Surviving are her husband and soul mate, Raymond; her four children, Sharon (Keith) Hanson of Minocqua, Wis., Ronald (Sandy) Poisson of Sturtevant, Wis., Carol (Ken) Weeks of Bemidji, Minn. and Lauri (Dave) Kendzierski of Oconomowoc, Wis.; 13 grandchildren brought joy and laughter to her life. They include Kristin, Paul, Amy (Greg), Andre, Danielle, Peter (Sarah), Matthew, Sarah, Joseph, Kevin, Erika, Claire and Celeste and one great-grandson, Quinn; valued friends and one brother-in-law, Earl.
Preceding Trudy in death were her beloved parents, Fred and Rose; a brother, Albert and a sister, Lorraine; her husband's parents, Edmund and Aldea, and many treasured friends and extended family members.
At Gertrude's request, visitation will be private.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. from St. Mary and St. Joseph Church. Fr. Dan Moll will offer the Mass of the Christian burial and burial will be at cemetery Park.
The family extends it's appreciation to the nurses, aides and physicians, who cared for her through her final illness and who truly made a difference during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.
Trudy/Mom/Nona, may your heavenly home be nestled in God's most beautiful garden, so you can tend His flowers with you loving touch and nurture His hummingbirds like you did your family. Maybe there will even be a newborn angel for you to rock. You were a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Rest well till we see you again.

Maureen Lucas
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Maureen Lucas, 90, of Ann Arbor, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, in Ann Arbor.
She was born in Coleman Township, Wis., the daughter of the late William and Clivina Monigal on April 9, 1917.
She attended Messenger Creek School (a one-room school house) near Klondike, Wis.
In 1923, she moved with her parents to Iron Mountain. She grew up in the midst of the Von Platen Fox Co. lumber operations, where her father worked. She graduated from Kingsford High School with the class of 1936. She was employed by the Abe Sachim Co. in Iron Mountain as head cashier until 1942.
Through Michigan Civil Service, she was sent to Flint to work in the Secretary of State office where she eventually became branch Manager. She attended evening art classes at the Flint Institute of Art for more than seven years.
On Sept. 9, 1950, she married
Robert D. Lucas of Ann Arbor. Her husband, Robert, preceded her in death in March of 2002
In 1968, she received her bachelor's degree and in 1974 her master's degree, both in art education from Eastern Michigan University. Her career as a teacher began at Pinckney High School in September of 1968. She was always proud of the quality of her students' work and loved the pleasant atmosphere of this rural community.
Robert Sabuda, Mark Welser, Bill Dunaj, and Randy Waltz were among her students who gave her much joy. There were many fine art students she nurtured but lost track of over time, whom she wished successful careers in art.
Maureen was a member of the Ann Arbor Women Artists, the Chelsea Painters and the Michigan Watercolor Society, and held board membership in the Ann Arbor Women's Painters and the Michigan Watercolor Society for some years.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Martha Lucas of Rutherford, N. J. and Gwen Lucas of Ann Arbor, and by four grandchildren-Samantha Lucas, Garnet Lucas, Sean Lucas and Gage Lucas, all of Ann Arbor. She is also survived by her sisters, Magdelen Gustafson of Iron Mountain and Rosemary Lewis of Palm City, Fla.; her brother, Robert Monigal of West Allis, Wis. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Samantha Monigal, Gwen Daly, Lela Oberthaler and Thelma Conery.
Her gifts for developing talent and for cultivating friends even in her later years and her gentle surety will be remembered and quietly missed.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
A rosary service will be held on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Deacon Don Christy will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Norbert "Bing" Emond
BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Norbert 'Bing' Emond, 79, of N3905 Pine Mountain Road, Breitung Township, died, Saturday, March 15, 2008 at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
Bing was born on May 19, 1928, son of the late Charles Raymond and Ethel (Gomber) Emond and has been a lifelong resident of this area. He served with the United States Army during World War II.
Bing married
the former Lucille M. LeDocq on June 23, 1949, at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. They owned and operated the Twin Pines Lumber Company from 1963 until his retirement in 1988. Bing was very active with the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Federal Credit Union. He has served on the board including the positions of secretary and chairman since 1961. Bing was also a member the Golden K.
Bing is survived by his wife, Lucille 'Lu;' daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Denny Trewartha of Iron Mountain; brothers, Neal (Barbara) Emond of Ilaaco, Wash. and Ronald (Charlotte) Emond of Iron Mountain and sister, Arlene (Earl) Grau of Parker, Colo.; brothers-in-law, Wilford and Gilford LeDocq of Joliet, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Lillian Rodgers of Kingsford, Marge Gunville of Niagara and Jan Emond of Kingsford; several nieces and nephews and very special great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marlene Dahlgren and a brother, Earl Emond.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Clara LaPointe
BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Clara (Wender) LaPoint, 88, of Upper Pine Creek, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born to Polish immigrant parents, Samuel and Anna Bilski, on Oct. 31, 1919, the youngest of eight children which included Katie, Anton, Margaret, Angeline, Julia, Louis, Edward, all of which preceded her in death.
Clara was raised on the Bilski farm until her late teen years, then during the Depression moved to Winnetka, Ill. where she secured a position as a nanny. From there, she joined her sisters Julia and Margaret in Detroit where she worked in the auto manufacturing plants, filling in as many women did, as part of the World War II effort.
She returned home to marry Edward Wender in 1947. Together they had four children, Nancy (John) Daley of Iron Mountain, Diane (Dave) Pontrelli of Missoula, Mont., Tom Wender and Jim (Bernie) Wender of Pine Creek. Edward preceded her in death in 1961. Her children would make her a proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Clara had a long career as the credit manager at Montgomery Ward until their closing. She then worked for The Drug Store for many years, finally retiring at the age of 82.
In 1978, she married
Leslie LaPoint and Clara became 'Grandma' to all the LaPoint grandchildren as well. Les passed away in May of 2006. They resided in Pine Creek where Clara took pride in her abundant vegetable garden, perennial flowers and her uncanny knack for cultivating lady slippers and other wildflowers. She loved picking berries, making delicious jams, antiquing and was an avid fan of the many football teams her children and grandchildren were involved with, both at the high school and college level.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday at Erickson- Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. Rev. David Anderson will officiate

Roseann Sherman
KINGSFORD - Roseann Sherman, 98, of 609 Westwood Ave., Kingsford, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at Hyland Nursing Home.
She was born March 17, 1909, in Gladstone, daughter of the late Louis and Lena (Sovey) Gardner and has been a resident of this area her entire life. Roseann was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Church and the Daughters of Isabella.
She volunteered at the Breen Senior Citizens Center. Roseann was an avid gardener and took great pride tending to the flowers in her yard. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially smear.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews
Roseann was preceded in death by her son, Gordon Fitzgerald; her sisters, Dora Gardner, Marie Gardner, Julia Gouley, Martha Bergeron and Anna (Pietrantonio) Sherman and her brother, Adrian Gardner.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary Queen of Peace Church in Kingsford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of the Christian burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Orville Swanson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Orville R. Swanson, 87, of 1316 Stockbridge Ave., Iron Mountain, died, Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash funeral home.
Memorial services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Erickson-Rochon and Nash funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.
Bonny Lea White
RALPH - Bonny Lea White, 70, of Ralph, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at her home in the arms of her daughter and grandson, after a three year battle with colon cancer.
She was born on Oct. 26, 1937, in Bowler, Wis., the daughter of the late William and Ruth (Thompson) Schiefelbein. Bonny graduated from Pembine High School in 1955 as salutatorian of her class.
On Sept. 13, 1957, Bonny married
Lowell 'Dode' White in Iron Mountain. Bonny deeply loved and cared for Dode and they were inseparable for their 51 years together.
They initially made their home in Rockford, Ill., and subsequently lived in Marinette, Wis., before settling in Ralph, where they raised their family of five children.
Bonny worked for many years as a forklift operator at Lakeshore Industries prior to the closing of the Kingsford plant.
She also served as West Branch Township treasurer for several years.
Bonny was an excellent cook and renowned baker and fed many friends and strangers in her kitchen in Ralph over the years. Her piemaking skills were legendary. Her many other skills included quilting, sewing and gardening as well as small engine repair, chain saw repair and home wiring. No task was insurmountable for Bonny.
She was also an inveterate Green Bay Packers fan.
She loved to fish from her dock at Pickerel Lake and also loved foraging for wild berries and mushrooms. She loved animals of all kinds and was especially fond of her dog Pung. She was a gifted horse handler and enjoyed feeding and watching wild birds.
Bonny always enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.
She is survived by her husband Lowell 'Dode;' five children, Lowell 'Rocky' White of Green Bay, Wis., Theresa White of St. Claire Shores, Mich., Deb White (Robert Mahin) of Marquette, Sherry (Dr. Jim) Addison of Marquette and Barb (Fritz) Kirl of Long View, Texas; four brothers Roger (Sue) Schiefelbein of Columbia City, Ind., Rodney Newingham of Iron Mountain, Daryl Newingham of Wausaukee, Wis., and Ricky Newingham of Quinnisec; three sisters, Jeanine (John) White of Wausaukee, Kathy Newingham of Dunbar, and Marleen (Bill) Kuczala of Goodman, Wis.; five grandchildren, Jason (Jen) Oman of Felch, Michael Oman of Marquette, Brandi Dean of Jackson, Wy., Bonny and Rohan Mahin of Marquette, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.

Lorraine M. Person
IRON MOUNTAIN - Lorraine Marie Person, 82, of 301 Madison Ave., Iron Mountain, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at her home.
Lorraine was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Iron Mountain daughter of the late John and Carrie (Pozza) Toretta. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1943 and was a lifelong resident of the area.
Lorraine married
Walter 'Nipp' Person in 1947, at Immaculate Conception Church in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death in February of 2000.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Lady Elks.
She enjoyed reading and shopping.
Lorraine is survived by a son, P. Michael (Stephanie) Person of Elkhart, Ind.; a sister, Mary Ann (John) Perla of Iron Mountain; two grandsons, Eric and Jason Person; and one great-grandson, Mitchell Person; a nephew, John (Gail) Perla of New Berlin, WI and two grand nieces, Heather and Kimberly.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 29, at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
