Pauline O. Rothgarn
IRON MOUNTAIN - Pauline O. Rothgarn, 84, of 601 East G St. in Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Pauline was born July 12, 1923, in Foster City, daughter of the late John and Aleksandra (Waaranmaa) Mackie. She lived in this area for her entire life.
Pauline married
Willard Rothgarn and he preceded her in death in 1984.
She enjoyed reading, puzzles, going to the casino and playing cards with friends.
Pauline is survived by five sons, Doug (Debbie) Vandervest of Kansas, Terry (Pat) Trempe of Kingsford, Dana (Barbara) Trempe of Iron Mountain and Randy and Rodney Rothgarn, both of Norway; two daughters, Sheryl (Keith) Vada of Norway and Gail Howard of Detroit; one sister, Elsie Johnson of Iron Mountain; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria; a grandson, Kenneth Skoglund; four brothers, Erwin, Arvid, William and Ilmar Mackie; and four sisters, Helene Isaacson, Lillian Isaacson, Helen Peterson and Martha Mackie.
Private family graveside services will be held with Rev. David Anderson officiating.
Burial will be in the Norway Township cemetery.

Rudoph N. "Booch" Hiltonen
IRON MOUNTAIN - Rudolph N. 'Booch' Hiltonen, 90, died peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, at the home of his son, Leonard, who has lovingly cared for him over the past several years.
He was born on June 2, 1917, in Boston, Mich., the son of the late Louis and Hilda (Kempala) Hiltonen. His father worked in the mines there. They later moved to the 'Northside' of Iron Mountain. He attended the Iron Mountain schools until going to the CCC Camp. He then joined the Army Air Corps for four years where he became a staff sergeant.
Rudy married
Vivian Witzel of Chicago. They were married
for 45 years. She preceded him in death in 1996.
He worked for the city of Iron Mountain at cemetery Park for 39 years. He loved his work and made several friends during those years. He enjoyed many rabbit feeds with his friends from the cemetery, Cookie, Bruce, Dean, Becco, Al Dabb and Pete Clash. His hobbies included softball and working. He received the nickname Booch by nailing a bushel basket up on the garage wall and pitching softballs into it. He was known for his amazing pitching. Rudy played for Liberty Loan and other local bars through the years. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. It wasn't unusual to find Rudy re-roofing a neighbor's house after putting in a full day's work.
Rudolph is survived by one sister, Sonya Ketola of Amasa; two sons, Nick Hiltonen of Kingsford and Leonard Hiltonen of Norway Township; 10 grandchildren, Crissa, Cy, and Abby Hiltonen of Kingsford, Leonard (Kentrice) Hannah of Norway and four great-grandchildren and one in the oven, Jerelene (Sydney) Jackson of Orlando, Fla. and seven great-grandchildren, Andrena (Keith) Griffin of Georgia and six great-grandchildren, Yamina (Joe) Piatti of Milwaukee and three great-grandchildren, Delece (Farley) of Chicago and three great-grandchildren, Jamie Marie Love of Boise, Idaho and five great-grandchildren, and Victor McDuffy of Madison, Wis. and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilda and Louis Hiltonen; his wife Vivian, three brothers, Fred, John and Louis; and three sisters Ann Olson, Mayme Hiltonen, and Esther Johnson.
Over the past five years, Rudy enjoyed attending Family Ties two days a week to see Tammy, Angie, Pauline, and Sharon. He couldn't wait to go! The family would like to thank Family Ties and Christine of UPCAP for all they have done for the past five years. They would also like to thank Loving Caring Hands for sending Stacy to care for their dad's needs over the past three months. Rudy and Stacy shared a special bond. She was very caring.
There will be a full military burial service on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. The eulogy will be given by Dr. Michael Zevitz.

Carla Elizabeth Heitka
SPREAD EAGLE, Wis. - Carla Elizabeth Heitka, 85, of Spread Eagle, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at the home of her daughter, Ellie, in Lawrenceville, Ga., where she had resided since 2005.
Carla was born on April 8, 1922, in Milwaukee, the adopted daughter of the late Frank and Clara (Lotz) Wilde.
Carla married
William Robbins Heitka on June 24, 1942, in Milwaukee. The couple moved from Oconomowoc, Wis. in 1992 to assume year-round residence in their summer home on the Spread Eagle Chain.
Carla enjoyed living on the lake; swimming, boating, fishing and all outdoor activities. She was an active member of the Homestead Senior Center, loved road trips and time spent with her special friend, Everett Chellew.
She is survived by three children, Gilbert (Barbara) Heitka of Mattoon, Ill., Ellen (Thomas) Schmittinger and Sandra Amrhein, both of Lawrenceville; six grandchildren, James (Kris) Bettridge of Austin, Texas, Heather (Pete) Piner and Elizabeth (Dean) Giroir, both of Lilburn, Ga., Roger Heitka of Janesville, Wis., Lisa (Jamie) Burton of Rantoul, Ill. and Theresa Williams of Davenport, Ill.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996.
A memorial service will be held in late fall when all family members can gather together.

William J. Tyree
KINGSFORD - William Tyree, 79, of Kingsford, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Feb. 10, 1928, in Milwaukee, the son of the late Herb and Nell Tyree.
Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a sheet metal worker for more than 20 years. Bill was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and the Florence Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
He enjoyed life and loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman and liked hunting and golfing.
Bill married
LaVerne Rittenhouse on March 20, 1976, in Kingsford.
He is survived by his wife, LaVerne; two children, David (Pauline) Rittenhouse of Kingsford and Karin (Bruce) Bennett of Kildeer, Ill.; three brothers, Raymond "Bud" (Betty) Tyree, Wayne (Boots) Tyree, and Pat (Arlene) Tyree, all of Milwaukee; four grandchildren, Angela (John) Leppiaho, Brian (Lydia) Rittenhouse, Kelsey Bennett, and Taylor Bennett; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Madelyn, Connor, Aiden, and Alex; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by four brothers, Jack, Herb, Ken, and Dale Tyree.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at the funeral home at 6 p.m. Pastor Lee Liverance will officiate.
Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Diabetes Association.
The Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Edith E. Edberg
FELCH - Edith E. Edberg, 87, of Felch, died Sunday, Aug.19, 2007, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Kingsford.
She was born July 6, 1920, in New Egypt, N.J., to John and Esther (Johnson) Anderson. When she was two years-old, her father died and she and her mother moved to Metropolitan to be near family there. She was raised and educated in Metropolitan and Armada, Mich., graduating from Felch High School in 1936 at the age of 16.
She attended Eastern Michigan University and then married
Arnold Edberg on Sep. 20, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1981. After six children, she returned to college and completed her teaching degree at Northern Michigan University. She also studied at Oxford University in England.
She began her teaching career at Longfellow School in Foster City, then taught in Felch and retired from the North Dickinson Schools.
In addition to teaching elementary school, she was a piano teacher for many years and was very proud of the accomplishments of her
pupils. Her commitment to her music students continued long after her retirement as she accompanied students in solo and ensemble competition well into her 80s.
Her passions included travel (especially to England), reading, classical music and opera, crossword puzzles, knitting and needlepoint, good conversation and pride in her family which included her Zion church family. Her life was one of service to her church and community. She was the organist and choir director at Zion Lutheran Church in Metropolitan and was honored by the congregation on July 8 for more than 50 years of service.
She was a member, pianist and resident philosopher of the Kiwanis Club. She was recognized as a First Lady of Dickinson County and a Bresnan Super Senior. She served her community as a hospital gift shop volunteer, VFW Auxiliary member, Cub Scout, Girl Scout and 4-H leader and numerous activities involving church and young people.
Edith is survived by four children, Mary Lou (David) Blomquist, Jim (Barb) Edberg, Bill (Rita) Edberg and Bob (Karen) Edberg. She leaves nine grandchildren, Mike Blomquist, Mary Beth (Blomquist) Krueger, Tom Edberg, Diana (Edberg) Reynolds, Robin (Edberg) Strauss, Allison and Angie Edberg, Jason and Ryan Edberg; and six great-grandchildren; a cousin, Doris Johnson; sister-in-law, Vernice Palmer; brother-in-law, Melvin Edberg; several nieces and nephews and lots of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; two sons, Arnold (Pug) and Thomas (Andy) and a granddaughter, Tammy Edberg.
Friends may call at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home today between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. A brief prayer service will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Bill Jacobson on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Metropolitan, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in the Felch cemetery.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Endowment Fund of Zion Lutheran Church, Metropolitan Road, Felch, Mich., 49831.

Herbert L. Martin
CHANNING - Herbert L. Martin, 73, of Channing, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born on April 2, 1934, in Shiocton, Wis., son of the late August and Alice (Babcock) Martin. He was a lifelong resident Channing. He worked as a logger in the woods all of his life. He loved any kind of mechanic work. He enjoyed watching the 'Price is Right' and 'Wheel of Fortune.'
Herb is survived by brothers, Clinton Martin of Fond du lac, Wis. and Arthur (Mary) Martin and Glendon Martin, both of Channing; sisters, Alice (Ron) Furman of Oshkosh, Wis. and Betty Martin of California; sister-in-law, Viola Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, William, Charlie, Augie, and Irving; sisters, Hilda, Liz, Mable, and Leona; and stepbrothers, Hank, Maynard, and Leonard.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Channing cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

Charlene C. Martin
IRON MOUNTAIN - Charlene C. Martin, 62, of 300 1/2 East Margaret St., Iron Mountain has passed away. The Lord came on Aug. 18, 2007, to take her home after a brief battle with cancer.
She was born on Oct. 8, 1944, in Mackinaw County, daughter of the late Frank and Virginia (Blay) Martin. Charlene was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was a good, warm hearted person who enjoyed socializing with friends and helping those in need.
She is survived by two daughters, Rose (James Zeeb) Brady of Crystal Falls and Susanne (Rick Widdicombe) Hudson of Iron Mountain; sisters, Edna (Sid) Hibma of Holland, Mich., Ruth (Bill) Bird of McMillan, Mich., Betty (Andy) Saddler of Kalamazoo, Mich., Mary Solomon of Holland, Linda Lee of Holland, Tena (Tony Zuverink) of Holland and Teresa (Dave) Bird of Holland; a brother, Frank (Janet) Martin of North Carolina; three grandchildren, Jennifer Susanne Brady, Heather Marie Brady and Jennifer Rose Marshall. Charlene is also survived by her longtime companion of 21 years, Gene Berger and many nieces and nephews.
Charlene was preceded in death by her sister, Sally Trickle.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 11 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will officiate

Karen Ann Erickson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Karen Ann Erickson, 63, of 507 West F St., Iron Mountain died Saturday, Aug. 18th, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 20, 1944, in Kansas City, Mo., daughter of the late Tilman and Helen (Esdale) Moe. Karen graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis in 1961, and from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., with a bachelor of arts degree in math and chemistry and a minor in English.
Karen married
Charles D. Erickson on Aug. 6, 1966, in Minneapolis, and has been a resident of Iron Mountain since their marriage.
She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Lydia's Circle, P.E.O. Chapter AN, bridge club and the birthday club.
Karen was a former member of the Dickinson County Hospital League and was a volunteer at the gift store in the hospital. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, a volunteer for the Lawrence University Administration Office, and a former member of the AAUW. Karen loved to read, knit, and play bridge, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Chuck Erickson; one son, Chuck Erickson of Appleton; one brother; Tilman 'Tim' (Ann) Moe Jr. of Neenah, Wis.; one sister; Gail (Leroy) Neal of La Mirada, Calif.; sister-in law and brother-in-law, Kris and Dr. Stephen Leonard of Iron Mountain and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m to 8 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.
Pallbearers will be, Steve Leonard, Bob Forgette Sr., Henry Wender, Bob Forgette Jr., Ron LaCost, Marty Allstrom, and Bob Schultz.
Burial will be in the cemetery Park.

Chris S. Edlund
AURORA, Wis.' Chris S. Edlund, 58, of 2636 River Dr., Aurora, Wis., passed away Aug. 17, 2007, at her home.
She was born on June 11, 1949, in Escanaba. Chris was a 1967 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. She has been a resident of this area her entire life.
She married
Douglas Edlund on June 23, 1965, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain.
She worked as a bank teller for First National Bank in Iron Mountain for more than 30 years.
Chris was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the Dickinson County Pilots Association.
She enjoyed showing and training her dogs. She loved animals, especially her horses. She enjoyed riding and giving riding lessons.
Chris loved life and sharing her time with her family and grandchildren.
Chris was preceded in death by her mother Julia (Simons) Stuart, an infant brother and sister and a sister Karen Berquist.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas, her son Douglas (Cathy) Edlund of downstate Ortonville, daughter Kathy (Scott) Doda of Aurora, Wis., sisters, Candy (Vince) Lauk of Breitung Township and Norma (Paul) Raboin of Norway, grandchildren, Emma Edlund, Alec, Keaghan and Logan Doda, her father, Bruce Stuart of Kingsford, brother-in-law, John Berquist and her special friend, Diane Smith of Kingsford; also by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. at the church. Rev. Charles Piper will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Spring Lake Humane Society.
