Michael Dennis
Michael T. Dennis, 62, of Pine River, St. Ignace, died unexpectedly at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey Tuesday evening, May 24, 2005.
Donald ‘Doc’ Benson
Donald “Doc” Benson, 80, was an orthodontist who was the founder and owner of Mighty Mac Broadcasting in St. Ignace. He was an avid collector of Indian artifacts and art work and established Fort DeBuade Museum in St. Ignace. Dr. Benson died May 27, 2005.
Julia Calkins
Julia Sanford Calkins, 99, was a gifted dancer and professor of physical education who enjoyed writing, dogs, and travel. She died May 20, 2005 in Naples, Florida.
She was born Julia Violet Moorhead January 3, 1904, in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, to Joseph Guthrie and Mary Elizabeth Kidney-Moorhead.
She completed high school, where she participated in dance, then attended the University of Pittsburgh, where she set an American record for the 440-yard dash in one minute, 12 seconds. She transferred to the University of Michigan, where she married
Wilmont “Sandy” Sanford and received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1926.
Mrs. Calkins enjoyed dogs all of her life, acquiring her beloved Snoozer, who was followed by Kerry Dancer, Molly O’Keefe, and Camille.
She taught physical education in Saginaw and Detroit before becoming a professor of physical education and dance at Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit. In summer sessions, she studied with Martha Graham, Jose Limon, and Hanya Holm, receiving a Master of Arts degree in education from WSU in 1940. She retired from WSU in 1971.
She was described by friends as a beautiful and gifted dancer and credited with “the innovative costume; the delightful poem; the kinetic charge of the atmosphere.”
She and her husband belonged to Naubinway’s Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club, where she once wrote the Naubinway column for The St. Ignace News.
After Mr. Sanford’s death in 1981, she married
Paul Sylvester Calkins. The couple divided their years among Naples, Land Yacht Harbor, and Naubinway. She remained active by participating in Elderhostel programs and other ventures at home and abroad, learned sculpting, taught, danced, writing doggerel for friends and special occasions, and worked as a docent at the Collier Country Nature Conservancy.
She donated an ambulance to the Engadine ambulance corps and supported the seniors online outreach project on Collier County Public Library.
Mrs. Calkins is survived by cousins in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, her step-family, and friends and caregivers in Naples.
Leonard Wagosh
Leonard Wagosh of Drummond Island worked as a lumberman, a handyman, and landscape worker. He also worked in the mill for Rinehart Lumber for many years.
Mr. Wagosh died at the age of 74 Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Tendercare Long Term Care facility in Sault Ste. Marie.
He was born on Cockburn Island in Ontario, Canada January 10, 1931, to Tom and Annie (nee Kovodein) Wagosh. He moved with his family to Drummond Island in 1944.
Mr. Wagosh enjoyed working outdoors.
He is survived by his sister, Eva Wagosh of St. Ignace, and formerly of Drummond Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by four brothers, Albert, Charles, Edward, and Lawrence Wagosh.
A graveside funeral will be held this week at Drummond Island cemetery on Drummond Island. The date and time of the service were not available at press time.
Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford made arrangements for the family.
Jack Foster
Jack Keeton Foster, 70, of St. Ignace, died Saturday evening, May 28, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care Facility.
He was born December 10, 1934, in Garrett, Kentucky to Fred and Elsie (nee Keeton) Foster.
He worked for Kay Industries in Detroit for 22 years and moved to St. Ignace after retirement in 1979, where he became a member of Moose Lodge #999 and was an officer.
He is survived by two sons, James of St. Ignace and Bill of Sault Ste. Marie; a daughter and her family, Linda and John Massaway Jr. of St. Ignace; two brothers, Fred Jr. of Tennesee and Phillip of California; four sisters, Leigh, Nella, Ann, and Vera, all of Tennessee; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Wednesday, June 1, at 7 p.m. at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace, with the Reverend Jim Balfour officiating.
Steven Lesatz
Steven Lesatz, 41, of Sault Ste. Marie, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
Richard Schaedel
Richard Schaedel, an 85-yearold resident of St. Ignace, formerly of Austin, Texas, passed away early Friday, December 9, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace.
Professor Schaedel was a noted archaeologist and anthropologist who concentrated his studies in South America. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Yale in 1952, where he studied under Wendell Bennett, a noted Latin American student of Andean history.
He was born on August 17, 1920, in Newark, New Jersey, to Joseph and Anna Louise (nee Haug) Schaedel and was a veteran of World War II.
He began teaching at the University of Texas in 1964, where he was a professor of anthropology, and retired in 1997 with the lifelong honor of Emeritus Professor.
While living and working in northern Peru in the late 1940s, Dr. Schaedel founded the Instituto de AntropologĂa at the Universidad de Trujillo, which in 1971 named him Honorary Professor and in 1987 Doctor Honoris Causa. He also worked in Chile, Haiti, Mexico, Venezuela, and Berlin. His interests varied from community development to Andean stone sculpture to Moche ethnography, according to an obituary published by the University of Texas.
In addition to English, Mr. Schaedel spoke German, French, Spanish, Russian, and Mochik, a South American language.
Dr. Schaedel has lived in St. Ignace since July of 2005, owing to health problems.
Surviving are his wife, Eva, of Texas and Slovakia; three sons and their families, Leoncio and Maria Elena of Connecticut, Richard Edward of Berkeley, California, and Mark and Roberta of St. Ignace; two daughters and their families, Dahlia Hall of Stewart, Florida, and Delia AnnaMaria Schaedel of Hawaii and Austin; a sister, Paula Meuller of New Jersey; nine grandchildren, and one great grandson.
Cremation has taken place and a gathering will be held Thursday, December 29, at 5 p.m. at the home of Mark and Roberta Schaedel, 620 South State Street, St. Ignace.
His ashes will be interred in South America.
Pauline Apostle
Pauline V. Apostle, 95, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005, at the King’s Daughters Home in Midland.
Known as “Nanny” to her family, she was born June 23, 1910, in Goetzville to Roman and Anna (nee Belinski) Stec.
She married
Peter Apostle June 16, 1934, in Sault Ste. Marie. The couple moved to Midland in 1940, where they owned P&J Sandwich Shop and Gene’s All Sports.
Mrs. Apostle was an avid golfer and a life member of the Currie Women’s Golf Association. She earned many league awards. She was a member of American Legion, the Midland Elks, the Daughters of Isabella at St. Brigid, and served as a Pink Lady at the Midland Hospital gift shop.
Mrs. Apostle is survived by three children and their families, Patricia and Richard Rathsack of Midland, Ronald and Linda Apostle of Owosso, and Sharyn and Douglas Bean of Midland; grandchildren and their families, Matthew and Theresa, with children Jessica, Zachary, Maria, and Angella, Peter and Carolyn, with children Elizabeth, Bridget, Peter, and John, Christopher and Stephanie, with children Nicholas and R.J., Peter Stevenson, Jill and Tom Stevenson, Carrie and Tyler Snyder, with children Mackenzie, Grant, and Carson, and Robert and Lisa Bean, with children Carter and Chloe. She is survived by two sisters, Bernice Sharp of Midland and Josephine Warner of Royal Oak.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Peter, four sisters, Martha, Stella, Jane, and Mary, and two brothers, Edward and Raymond.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, December 22, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Brigid Church in Midland, with the Reverend Father George Serour as celebrant. Visitation was at the church Thursday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Interment will be at Midland City cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the King’s Daughters Home. Wilson Miller Funeral Home of Midland assisted the family.
Rose Dahlstrom
Rose Dahlstrom, a 90-year-old resident of Allenville, died early Christmas morning, December 25, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Hospital.
She and her twin sister, Ruth, were born in Allenville February 25, 1915, to Adam L. and Anna Louise (nee Soblaski) Litzner.
She married
Raymond Dahlstrom in 1940 at Sister Bay, Wisconsin, and the couple lived in Chicago and Glencoe, Illinois, for many years before moving back to Allenville in 1979. Mr. Dahlstrom died in 1985.
Mrs. Dahlstrom was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Allenville.
She is survived by a daughter and her family, Sharon and Bob Behrens of Arlington Heights, Illinois; five brothers and their families, Walter and Gert Litzner of St. Ignace, Eddie of Moran, Albert and Marjie of Bay City, George and Trish of Moran, and Art and Ruby of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, LaVerne Shimkovitz and Ruth Johnson, both of Allenville.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, the infant Helen and Margaret Jackson in 1986.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date at Zion Lutheran Church in Allenville.
Bertha Carr
Bertha A. Rye Carr of Pickford and Brooksville, Florida, was a lifelong resident of Pickford. She worked for many years as a cook and a waitress at Gough’s Restaurant in Pickford, and she also cooked at Kincheloe Air Force Base. She taught sewing from her home for several years, and worked as a seamstress on Mackinac Island.
Mrs. Carr was 83 when she passed away peacefully, Monday, January 23, 2006, in Brooksville.
She was born March 19, 1922, in Pickford to the late Nelson and Jesse (nee Kibble) Wonnacott.
Mrs. Carr and her husband, Allan, spent the past 20 winters in Arizona or Florida.
She was a member of the Pickford United Presbyterian Church, the Pickford Senior Citizens, and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 92 in Rockland.
Mrs. Carr loved to cook, and friends recall that “she was a great hostess who welcomed friends and family into her home.” She also enjoyed sewing and traveling.
Mrs. Carr is survived by her husband, Allan W. Carr, whom she married
August 16, 1985 on Mackinac Island.
She also is survived by four children and their families, Beverly Waybrant of Cedarville, Avis and Freddie Davis of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Howard “Vin” and Judy Rye Jr. of Corunna, and Bonnie Leach of Pickford; two step-daughters and their families, Jean and Ted Trudgean of Ewen and Jane and David Jaeger of Whitelaw, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren, Mitzi Chapla, Sharyll Waybrant, Nyla Pitsch, Dalaine Waybrant, Nyle Waybrant Jr., Penny Westover, Richard Davis, Howard V. Rye III, Joseph Rye, and Jason Leach; seven step-grandchildren, Wendy Street, Shon Stevenson, Heather Trudgean, Sean Trudgean, Scott Trudgean, Hanna Jaeger, and Tyler Jaeger; seven great-grandchildren; one greatgreat grandson; a brother and his family, Gerald and Joyce Wonnacott of Homer, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard V. Rye Sr. in April 1980; one step-daughter, Virgene Stevenson; three brothers, Kenneth, Ivan, and Harvey Wonnacott, and three sisters, Ila Ahola, Anna Roe, and Etta Hill.
Visitation was Monday, January 30, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.
Services were Tuesday, January 31, at Pickford United Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Ron Bown and Reverend Ted Trudgean officiated.
Spring burial will be at Cottle cemetery in Marquette Township in Pickford.

Bonnie Wales
Bonnie Diane Wales of Kincheloe owned and operated a commercial laundry business in Westminster, California, with her husband, Charles, for nearly 30 years. A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada, Mrs. Wales also taught piano to countless aspiring young musicians.
Mrs. Wales died at the age of 74, Thursday, January 26, 2006, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
She was born June 14, 1931, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada to Clarence Herbert and Madge Madeline (nee Logan) Elgie.
She married
Charles E. Wales September 1, 1955. In 1987, they retired and made Kincheloe their permanent home.
Mrs. Wales enjoyed golfing, and playing a good game of "313."
She is survived by one daughter and her family, Tracey and John Philip Gard of British Columbia, Canada, and one sister and her family, Joan and Fred Gard of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1996.
