Edward L. Kersten
Former Grosse Pointe Park resident Edward L. Kersten died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Mount Clemens General Hospital in Mount Clemens. He was 91.

Mr. Kersten was born in Kalamazoo and worked 46 years for Michigan Bell. He was a Mason and enjoyed golfing, skiing, swimming and gardening.

Mr. Kersten was predeceased by his wife, Helen, and brother, Millard.

A funeral service for Mr. Kersten was held on Saturday, March 4 at  White Chapel cemetery in Troy. Funeral arrangements were handled by Verheyden Funeral Home.

Leland B. Lindberg

Leland B. Lindberg died in his Grosse Pointe Farms home on Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000. He was 74 and been under treatment for heart problems.

Mr. Lindberg, a journalist who later became a media relations manager for the Michigan Bell Telephone Co., was born in St. Paul, Minn.

His newspaper career began at age 16 as a summer intern for the Livingston (Montana) Enterprise. Following service with the U.S. Navy during World War II, Mr. Lindberg graduated from the University of Minnesota.

He worked for the Madison (South Dakota) Daily Leader as news editor. He also worked at the Appleton (Wisconsin) Post-Crescent.

In 1950, he joined the United Press (now United Press International). During an eight-year career with the wire service, Mr. Lindberg worked in Indianapolis, Chicago and Detroit, where he was named Michigan bureau chief.

In 1958, he began a 24-year career in public relations with the Bell System, first with Michigan Bell, then as news manager with the parent company American Telephone and Telegraph Co., in New York City. He returned to Michigan Bell in 1964.

Following early retirement in 1982, Mr. Lindberg worked part-time for nearly a decade as the media relations coordinator for the Macomb County Community College Center for Performing Arts.

Mr. Lindberg enjoyed music, golf, history and sailing on Lake St. Clair. He took frequent walks and bicycle rides throughout the Pointes.

Mr. Lindberg is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter, Susan; and son, Bradley.

Services will be private.

Helen B. Prince

Grosse Pointe Park resident Helen B. Prince died at St. John Hospital and Medical Center on Thursday, March 2, 2000. She was 78.

Mrs. Prince was born in Detroit and was a graduate of Grosse Pointe High School. She worked as an administrative assistant for Unified Employee Benefits, Inc. She enjoyed writing and needlework.

Mrs. Prince is survived by her husband, H. Ford; a daughter, Linda Finger; a son, William; a sister, Delores Steffin; a brother, Robert Brougham; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service for Mrs. Prince was held Tuesday, March 6, at Verheyden Funeral Home. Interment is at Resurrection cemetery in Clinton Township.

Patricia Ann Swanson

Former City of Grosse Pointe resident Patricia Ann Swanson, of Indianapolis and Palm Beach, Fla., died at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis on Friday, March 3, 2000. She was 71.

Mrs. Swanson was a homemaker and an avid gardener.

Survivors include two daughters, Candice Arpino and Natalie Elpert; a son, Kurt; a brother Burt Kaal; a sister, Janet Coates; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin, and a daughter, Pamela LaPointe.

A private funeral service was held. Funeral arrangements were handled by Flanner & Buchanan Mortuaries in Indianapolis.

Thomas Valentine Trombly

Thomas Valentine Trombly Former Grosse Pointe Shores police chief Thomas Valentine Trombly died of heart failure Friday, March 3, 2000, at St. Ann's Assisted Living Center in Grand Rapids. He was 98.

Mr. Trombly was born in Detroit and was a City of Grosse Pointe resident for 86 years. He was a graduate of Detroit's Southeastern High School. He joined the Grosse Pointe Shores Police Department as a patrolman in 1925, was promoted to sergeant in 1935 and was named chief in 1937. He retired in 1963 after 38 years of service.

Mr. Trombly was an 80-year parishioner of St. Paul Catholic Church and a member of the church's Ushers Club, athletic board, bowling league and was active in its Boy Scouts troop. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Gabriel Richard Council and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He was also a member and past president of the Southeast Michigan Chiefs of Police and a founder and member of the Grosse Pointe chapter of the Metropolitan Club of Michigan.

Mr. Trombly is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marion; a daughter, Patricia Elliott; two sons, Thomas and Barry; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, John, five sisters and three brothers.

A memorial service for Mr. Trombly will be held Saturday, March 11 at St. Ann's Assisted Living Center at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place on Saturday, April 15 at St. Paul Catholic Church at 11 a.m.

Marian B. Williams

Former Grosse Pointe Woods resident Marian B. Williams, of Naples, Fla., died Friday, March 3, 2000. She was 89.

Mrs. Williams was born in Hamilton, New York and was the head dietitian at Bon Secours Hospital and University Liggett School.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan; a son, Robert; one grandson and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, William.

A memorial service for Mrs. Williams will be held Thursday, March 9, at Chancellor Park of Naples at 2 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be sent to a hospice or charity of choice.

Irene P. Andrews

Services for former Grosse Pointe Park resident Irene P. Andrews, of Mullett Lake, were held Tuesday, May 2, at Verheyden Funeral Home. Mrs. Andrews died of congestive heart failure at St. John Hospital and Medical Center on Saturday, April 29, 2000. She was 89.

Mrs. Andrews was born in Detroit. She was a homemaker and active in scouting, the Eastern Star and school parent groups. She spent her winters in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Vero Beach, Fla. She enjoyed bridge and watercolor painting.

Mrs. Andrews is survived by her son, Marty; a daughter, Joyce Williams; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Mitchel.

Interment is at Woodlawn cemetery in Detroit.

Alfrieda Mary Frost

Former Grosse Pointe Public School System assistant superintendent Alfrieda Mary Frost died of complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in her Grosse Pointe Shores home Sunday, April 30, 2000. She was 65.

Dr. Frost was born in Wheatfield Township and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Asbury College in 1956, a master of arts degree from Western Michigan University and a doctorate degree from Michigan State University in 1975.

Dr. Frost started her career as a teacher in the  Jefferson County Schools in Louisville, Ky. She was a teacher, then principal in South Haven before coming to the Grosse Pointe Public Schools as a principal at Defer Elementary School. Dr. Frost was then director of elementary curriculum/education and director of K-12 education before she assumed the position of assistant superintendent of curriculum and evaluation.

Dr. Frost was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the American Association of School Administrators, the Michigan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Michigan Coalition for Staff Development and School Improvement, the National Staff Development Council, the Michigan Reading Association, the International Reading Association, the Michigan Science Teachers Association, the National Science Teachers Association, the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association, and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. She was also a member and branch president of the American Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Dr. Frost is survived by a sister, Dorothy Kendall, and a brother, James. She was predeceased by a brother, Frank.

A memorial service for Dr. Frost will be held Saturday, May 20, at 9 a.m. at A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods.
