Patsy Wyers

Patsy Wyers of St. Ignace operated a licensed daycare for the past 10 years, and loved children. She also worked in home health care for many years, and worked as a waitress at the former Miller's Camp, Truck Stop Restaurant, and Homestead Cafe in St. Ignace. Mrs. Wyers was 67 when she passed away Thursday morning, May 8, 2008, at her home.

She was born in St. Ignace June 9, 1940, to Rita (nee McConnell) and Frederick Cobe.

She was graduated from LaSalle High School in 1958. She later earned a cosmetology license through Lake Superior State University, and became a certified nurse assistant through Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace.

Mrs. Wyers' yard was filled with flowers she planted every year.

She married Phillip F. Wyers in 1980, and he died March 19, 1985.

Mrs. Wyers is survived by a son and his family, Art and Tami Benson of Fife Lake; four daughters and their families, Christine and Mike Cooley of Lansing, Eleanor and Dan Grondin of St. Ignace, Penny Wyers of St. Ignace, and Teena and Gary Ballard Jr. of Moran; two half brothers, Robert Dumas and Victor Dumas, both of St. Ignace, and 10 grandchildren, Blake, Brandon, Alan, Amber, Samantha, Danny, Erik, Angel, Bree, and Dominic.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a stepfather, William Dumas, two brothers, Fred Cobe and William Dumas Jr., and a sister, Arlene Cobe.

Memorial services were Tuesday, May 13, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Ignace. Pastor Tari Stage-Harvey officiated.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements.

Ann Romig

Ann Mary Hecox Romig, 85, of San Luis Obispo, California, passed away Friday, March 7, 2008, in Missouri.

She was born July 27, 1922, to Paul and Kathleen (nee Murray) Hecox of St. Ignace. They were former owners of The St. Ignace News.

She was graduated from LaSalle High School, the University of Michigan, and the University of Michigan School of Nursing. She was a sergeant in the Army Nursing Corps, serving in World War II.

Mrs. Romig is survived by her husband, Robert; three children and their families, Paul and Elaine, Steven and Ruth, and Kathleen Sale and Bob Foote, and by three cousins, Margaret LeCount, Mary Jane St. Louis, and Josephine Lennon.

Mrs. Romig was preceded in death by three sons, Jimmy, Michael, and David.

A memorial service was held in California.

Donna Ward

Donna J. Ward, 75, of St. Ignace, died early Saturday morning, October 25, 2008, at Mackinac Straits Hospital after suffering a stroke at her apartment. She was born November 19, 1931, to Alfred and Eva (nee Sparks) Gillespie in Wyoming Township, Kent County.

Edwin Hohmann

Edwin H. Hohmann, 66, of Mackinac Island and Yorkville, Illinois, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his Mackinac Island apartment Wednesday, October 22, 2008. Mr. Hohmann was born in Cleveland, Ohio, May 12, 1942.

Thomas O'Dowd

Honorable Thomas J. O'Dowd, 77, of Rochester Hills, died of natural causes Wednesday, October 22, 2008. Born in Detroit, he was the son of Irish immigrant parents, Thomas and Helen O'Dowd. Judge O'Dowd was graduated from St. Leo's High School.

Rephelia Taylor

Rephelia M. Taylor, 87, of St. Ignace, died at Mackinac Straits Hospital's Long Term Care early Wednesday morning, October 22, 2008. She was born to Oliver and Belle (nee Mang) Vallier in St. Ignace May 14, 1921, and married Chester H. Taylor April 6, 1940. He died April 3, 2002.

Otto Flatt

Otto M. Flatt, 93, of Engadine, died at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette Sunday, October 26, 2008. He was born to Adolf and Lydia (nee Matchinske) Flatt in Alpena May 4, 1915, and the family moved to Engadine when he was a youth.

Kenneth Horsburgh

Kenneth Phillip Horsburgh, 88, a summer resident of Cedarville with an avid interest in restoring antique boats, was instrumental in founding the Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Wooden Boat Show and the Ensign racing fleet at Les Cheneaux.

Helen Johnson

Helen Lorraine Johnson, 81, of St. Ignace was an active community volunteer who chaired the local Christmas toy drive for many years. Mrs. Johnson died Thursday morning, November 27, 2008, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care.

Albert Adler

Albert E. Adler, 90, of Lakefield Township, died at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette Wednesday, November 26, 2008. Born in Engadine May 1, 1918, he was a son of Samuel and Pauline (nee Greenwood) Adler. Mr. Adler attended Engadine Schools and was a World War II veteran.

Leo Landreville

Leo S. Landreville, 63, of Longwood, Florida, died October 1, 2008, at the John Haley VA Medical Hospital in Tampa, Florida. He was born at home in DeTour Village January 7, 1945, to Ray and Ina (nee Toivola) Landreville. Mr. Landreville was graduated from DeTour Area Schools.

Blake Kammers-Rutledge

Blake Matthew Kammers-Rutledge, 44, of Hudson, Florida, formerly of St. Ignace, passed away January 20, 2005, at home, after a short battle with cancer.

Mildred Hall

Mildred Nowels Hall, 85, worked for 30 years as a business education teacher at Niles High School, with prior teaching positions in South Haven, Traverse City, and Northport. Mrs. Hall died January 22, 2005, at the Renaissance Convalescent Center in Muncie, Indiana, following an extended illness.

Diana Vandersys

Diana Lynn Vandersys, 57, of Kinross, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Kermith Hanna

Kermith A. Hanna, 84, of Pickford, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

Judith Bessler

Judith N. Bessler, 67, of Newberry was a licensed practical nurse and operated an upholstery and wallpaper business for several years. She died January 23, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Tina Marie Marshall

Tina Marie Marshall, 40, of Harvey and formerly of Moran, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming, where she had resided since January 2002.

James Kent

James William Kent, 83, of Bullhead City, Arizona, formerly of Cedarville, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005.

Kenneth Hancock

Kenneth R. Hancock, 70, a lifelong resident of the Engadine and Gould City areas, worked for many years as a union brick and stone mason. Mr. Hancock died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, in the care of his longtime companion, Judith Leveille, and Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Health and Hospice.

He was born April 16, 1934, in Engadine to Julius and Zelda (nee Quinn) Hancock.

Mr. Hancock was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged October 31, 1957.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Engadine, a board member for Engadine Consolidated Schools District, and a member of the Elks Lodge in Manistique.

He was married to Shurley Ehn November 7, 1959.

Mr. Hancock was a big fan of Michigan State sports and Red Wing hockey.

He is survived by two daughters and their families, Alida and Frank Reid of Omer and Ardis and Eric Kenwabikisc of Gould City; two sons and their families, Austin and Bonnie of Afton and Adam and Lisa of Byron, Georgia; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his longtime companion, Judith Leveille of Gould City; and a sister and her family, Mona and Dick Kemp of Lansing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shurley Ehn, who died September 13, 1994; and a sister, Barbara Hancock.

A memorial service was held Saturday, March 5, 2005, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend John Troyer officiating. Friends called on the family one hour prior to the service, at the town hall.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Engadine Education Foundation.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry assisted the family with arrangements.

Frank ‘Chet’ Conguy

Commercial fisherman Frank “Chet” Conguy, 48, of St. Ignace died unexpectedly Monday, February 28, 2005, at his home.

He was born May 3, 1956, in St. Ignace to Carl and Joann (nee LaVake) Conguy.

Mr. Conguy was graduated from high school and attended Alpena Community College. According to family members, he was an expert at tying and making fishing nets.

He was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruby Jennett of Manitou Beach; a grandson, Vladislaw; four sisters and their families, Carlene, Carol, Toni, and Terri Conguy and Kenn Peralla, all of St. Ignace; one aunt, Ilene Moses; two uncles and their families, David and Rita LaVake of St. Ignace and Ray and Arvilla McCall of St. Ignace; two nephews, Jason Sheber and Thomas Conguy; a great-niece, Emelyn Chester; and special nieces and nephew Eddie and Lindsay Andrews, and Annie, Angela, and Jessie Hadley, as well as many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents, Frank and Marie LaVake and John and Maude Conguy; and several aunts and uncles.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 4, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, with Lay Leader Robert Belonga officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were “Hummer” Hough, Sonny Paquin, Mike McNeely, Ron Belonga, Bo Andrews, Mike Woodford, Dale Woodford, Kevin McNamara, and John Moses.

Margaret Hetrick

Former McMillan resident, Margaret A. Hetrick, 98, of Fort Pierce, Florida, died Saturday March 5, 2005, at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce.

Genevieve Shorkey

Genevieve Elizabeth Shorkey, 86, of Cedarville, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care in St. Ignace.

She was born April 29, 1918, in Bay City.

Mrs. Shorkey moved to Pinconning in the early 1960s.

She worked as a seamstress in Bay City for many years, moving to Cedarville when her husband, George, retired 28 years ago.

Mrs. Shorkey loved watching and feeding birds and deer in her yard.

She is survived by one son and his family, Garry and Deborah Shorkey of Pinconning; three grandchildren and their families, Dwayne and Angela Loranger, Bridgette and Kim Klemish, and Scott Shorkey; and two great-grandchildren, Tara and Klarissa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Shorkey, in October 2004, and her daughter, Georjean Loranger, in August 2004.

Services were Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford, with Father Sebastian Chacko officiating. Friends called at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Spring burial will be in Cedar cemetery in Cedarville.

Norman ‘Bud’ Burton, Sr.

Norman A. “Bud” Burton Sr., 75, of Germfask, worked for 32 years as a heavy equipment operator for Schoolcraft County Road Commission.

He died March 5, 2005, at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

He was born November 2, 1929, in Manistique, to George and Elizabeth (nee Smith) Burton. He attended schools in Germfask and Manistique.

Mr. Burton was awarded the Purple Heart for service in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

He married Mary Ann Leveille April 4, 1953, in Manistique.

Mr. Burton was a member of the Doran-Keating VFW Post No. 6030 in Germfask and the United Men’s Club of Germfask. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and telling stories. He was a coach for the Germfask Little League.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Burton of Germfask, a daughter and her family, Rachel and Dave Williams of Germfask, and a son and his family, Norman and Sherry Burton Jr. of Curtis. He is survived by four grandchildren and their families, Paul and Josie Williams of Stephenson, Jennifer Burton of Newberry, Josie and Jeff Mouch of Curtis, and Jarrissa Burton of Curtis; three brothers and their families, William and Robin Burton of Lakefield, Harry and Carolyn Burton of Germfask, and James and Dawn Burton of Germfask; two sisters, Theresia Holbrook of Gould City and Tina Burton of Lakefield; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Herb and Charles.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A funeral will begin at 2 p.m., with Pastor J.D. Livermore Jr. officiating, with a veterans’ service to follow.

Burial will be at Riverside cemetery at Germfask.
