BUTTON -- Grace Button, aged 86, of Wayland Twp., went to be with her Lord Friday, March 15, 2002. She is survived by her children, Edward (Charlene) Tolhurst, Robert (Evelyn) Tolhurst, Mary (Gordie) Navis, Lois (Loren) Edwards, Bonnie (Larry) Brenner; daughter-in-law, Delores Tolhurst; 22 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brother Jack (Esther) VanderHoning; sisters-in-law, Betty VanderHoning, Norma VanderHoning. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Willis, in 1997; son, Fred Tolhurst; grandson, Jeff Navis. Funeral Services were held Monday at United Church of Wayland with Pastor Nancy Zerban officiating. Interment in Elmwood cemetery. DEBOER -- Barbara L. DeBoer, aged 58, of Gun Lake, went to be with her Lord, Sunday, March 17, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Andrew; daughters, Cheryl (Ivan) Kuhtic, Denette (Rod) Meeuwsen; grandchildren, Angela (fiance, Kevin), Monica, Sabrina; sisters, LaVonne (Larry) Armstrong, Irene (Rod) Crump; brother, Harold (Judy) Priest; also many nieces and nephews, brothers & sisters-in-law. Barbara was preceded in death by her son, Roy; grandson, Gabriel. Funeral Services were held Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor George E. Speas officiating. DIETZ -- Timothy John Dietz, age 33, of Aetna Twp., Morley, Michigan and formerly of Wayland, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at his residence in Aetna Twp., Morley. He was born Timothy John Dietz in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Darla Jean DuMond and John Fredrick Dietz on August 03, 1968. He was a furniture truck loader for ACE LTL Express, Moline, MI until 2000. He was affiliated with Croton Trinity Bible Church. He loved hunting, fishing and being with his family and friends. He is survived by his mother, Darla Dietz, Morley; father, John F. Dietz, Howard City; son, Timothy J Dietz, Jr., Wellston; brother, Randy Dietz, Howard City; sister, Virginia & Brian Anderson, Delton; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; special friends, Joe Banas, Wayland, Lee Harris, Jr, Morley and Scott & Renae Manley, Morley. Memorial funeral services were held Saturday, March 23, 2002, 3 p.m. at Croton Trinity Bible Church. Memorials may be made to Croton Trinity Bible Church. GATES -- Eleanor Belle Gates, age 81, of Hamilton, died on Tuesday, March 19, 2002. She was born January 27, 1921 to John E. and Susie E. (Noble) Meredith in Shelbyville, MI. Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; 2 young brothers; husband, John Gates in 1986; son, Jerome Harold Gates in 1945; sisters, Margaret (Albert) Gates and Marion (Clayton) Tolhurst. She is survived by her children: John E. Gates of Wayland, Sharon and Steward Van Dyke of Hamilton, Roger and Ruth Ann Gates of Hamilton, Shirley Yoder of Hamilton, Judy and Eugene Owings of Shelbyville, Richard Gates of Hamilton; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her twin sister, Esther (Leon) Haywood of Shelbyville and a brother, Evans and Mildred Meredith of Kalamazoo. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Eleanor was a member of Diamond Springs Wesleyan Church. She loved her Lord, her family and enjoyed spending time with them. The past few years of her life she had much illness and her dog, Benji, provided her so much comfort as he would even visit her at the nursing home. He too, will miss her so much. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 22, 2002 at the Diamond Springs Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Larry LePoire officiating. Burial will be in Bentheim cemetery. BRUINSMA -- Gloria Harris Bruinsma of Murfreesboro, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on March 1, 2002. She was born in Fosterville, Tenn on Sept 26, 1931. She was the daughter of William and Marie Harris. She met Johnnie Bruinsma, a young soldier, from Wayland, Michigan in 1948. The couple were married
four years later. They recently celebrated their 50th Anniversary. She was active in the Murfreesboro Little Theater where she had a large number of major roles. In addition to her husband, she is survived by the children Jeane (Charlie) Phillips, Cherie (Steven) Morris, and John Bruinsma and his companion Ken Painter. Grandchildren include Andy (Robin) Johnson, and Evan Johnson of McMinnville, Tenn, and Stephanie and Katherine Morris of Fairhaven, MI, and great-granddaughter Taylor Johnson. Gloria was a very special lady with a great personality who was loved by all who met her.
ROOBOL -- Arie Roobol, Plainwell. Hardworking farmer, kind and gentle husband and father, these would be some of the words to describe Arie Roobol, he died Saturday, March 9, 2002 in Allegan. Arie was born June 14, 1919 in Hopkins, Michigan the son of the late Cornelius and Adriana Roobol. Arie lived in this area his whole life, and farmed in Martin and was the oldest member of the Allegan Farm Bureau. His health forced him to retire in 1980. Although retired, he still supervised a farm and his son Ron recalls his words of wisdom, "You have to be like a turtle, if you don't stick out your neck, you won't get anywhere." He was a member of the Martin Reformed Church, which was an important part of his life, and he had served as a deacon. A hard worker all his life, Arie enjoyed traveling around the US and Canada, and especially enjoyed the trips where he didn't have to drive. His family was also an important part of his life and the grandchildren remember getting a dollar whenever they lost a tooth. His family includes his wife of 60 years, Velma; his sons and their spouses, Ronald and Valerie Roobol, Robert and Ann Roobol, his grandchildren, Chris, Brian and Brad Roobol, Tami Leep Koneig, Becky Leep, Arie, Andrew and Aaron Roobol, David Wicklund, Ann Freudinger; great grandchildren, Chris, Patrick, Kevin, Kara, Kyle, Makayla, Justin, Scott and Kyle; a sister Adriana Smith; a brother-in-law, Adrian Vanderweel, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Patricia Leep; 3 brothers and 2 sisters Pauline Doorlag and Carlyn Vanderwell. A Celebration of Life Service was held Wednesday at the Martin Reformed Church, Rev. James Goldschmeding officiating. Burial followed at East Martin cemetery. VANKAMPEN -- Charlene D. VanKampen, Gun Lake. A determined, loving spirit best describes Charlene. Throughout her life and even during her long illness she always showed this remarkable spirit. Char died Monday, March 11, 2002 at her home. She was born November 2, 1936 in San Bernardino, California, a daughter of James and Minnie (Sutter) Chrisman and grew up in the same town where she was born. Following her marriage to Norman VanKampen life took her several places because of her husband being in the service. In 1968 the VanKampen family settled at Gun Lake where Char spent the rest of her life. She was a devoted employee for 25 years at Checker Motors in Kalamazoo. She found enjoyment in many things, including flower gardening, houseplants, making crafts, crocheting and making baby blankets for her family. Char also loved auctions, flea markets and shopping. Her greatest passion was her involvement with her daughter Michelle's Cerebral Palsy activities and causes. Her loving care and concern for Michelle and all her family has always been evident. Char's family includes her six children Sheryl Cook of Gun Lake, Yvonne and Bruce Daniels of Gun Lake, Beth Ann VanderBerg and Kevin Earley of Plainwell, Norman and Connie VanKampen of Byron Center, Rebecca Lester of Plainwell, and Michelle VanKampen of Gun Lake; 1 brother James Chrisman of Colorado; 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; in laws Dezra Lawrence, Sally Montes, Donna Ribble, Marvin VanKampen; dear friends Mary Collins and Tom Moran. Preceding her in death were her parents; former husband Norman; 2 sisters Nita and Edith; and 2 brothers Richard and Edward; in laws Maude and Jake VanKampen and Beverly Anderson. A Celebration of Life Service was held Friday at Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, with Rev. Evan Downey leading the service. Burial followed at Oak Hill cemetery, Orangeville. Memorials may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.
WELTY -- Helen M. (Haywood) Welty, age 77 of Pierson passed away Saturday, March 9, at her residence. She was born November 4, 1924 in Wayland, MI, the daughter of Harry and Stella (Schaffer) Haywood. Helen was a member of the The Howard City Ladies auxiliary. She had a love for her grandchildren and she enjoyed gardening and a challenging crossword puzzle. In 1946, she married
Kenneth Welty who survives; also surviving are one son James Welty of Howard City; five daughters, Kathy (Steve) Groothuis of TX, Pamela Welty of Grand Rapids, Jan (Dan) Osterhout of Kentwood, Diane (Dan) Bergman of Lake Odessa, Rosalind (Bob) Wright of Mass; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son William; a daughter Mary; two brothers and one sister. Funeral services for Helen took place on Tuesday at 11:00 am at The Heckman - Mohnke Funeral Home with Pastor Verda Giddings officiating. Memorials to Gratiot Area Home Hospice.
KIBBY -- Cathy A. Kibby, aged 52, of Moline, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Ivan; children, Bud M. Kibby, Ivan H. "Charlie" (Amy) Kibby II, Catherine Lee Wright; grandchildren, Dakota R. Wright, Savannah L. Wright, Adrianna N. Kibby, Rebecca L. Terrell; her mother, Elsie Funk; sister, Noreen Wiggins; brother, Randy Funk. Funeral Services will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. at Moline Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Smalla officiating. Private graveside services at Hooker cemetery. Memorials may be made to Moline Baptist Church Benevolent Fund. The family will greet relatives and friends Sunday 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. LOLL -- Robert C. Loll, Allegan Twp., died Monday, March 4, 2002 at Metron of Kalamazoo. Mr. Loll was born Aug. 10, 1925 in Cook County, IL, the son of Charles and Rose (Engel) Loll. He was a graduate of Gobles High School, Class of 1943. He had served in the Army Air Corp during WWII and had been a member of the Wayland V.F.W. He was employed by Rockwell Intl for 30 years, retiring in 1976. Surviving are 3 children, Terry Loll of Allegan, Charyl and Larry Wallace of Dorr and Randy and Colleen Loll of Plainwell; 8 grandchildren, Caren, Branden, James, Lisa, Nick, Jeff, Tara and Jolene; 13 great grandchildren, with two more on the way; 1 son-in-law, Stanley Brouwer of Allegan; 1 sister-in-law, Esther and Howard Teed of Allegan; 1 niece, Marilyn Brown of New York; 1 nephew, Don and Ruth Schulz of South Haven. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; daughter, Nancy; and granddaughter, Emily. Friends and family met on Wednesday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. There was no funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayland V.F.W. or the WWII Veteran Memorial Fund.
STONE -- Darl E. Stone, aged 70, of Hopkins, MI, died Friday, March 1, 2002 at Borgess-Pipp Health Center in Plainwell. Mr. Stone was born April 13, 1931 in Allegan County, the son of Russell and Wilma (Coon) Stone. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Dorr American Legion Post #127. His best friend was his dog, Pugsy. He loved to fish and was a great cook. Surviving are his wife, Avis; 1 daughter and 4 sons, Cheryl (David) Taylor of Wayland; Rodney (Diane) Stone, and James Stone, all of Hopkins, Bruce (Lauri) Stone of Plainwell and Darl Jr. (Mona) Stone of Zeeland; 3 stepsons, David (Rose) Sebright and Brent (Sue) Sebright, all of Hopkins and Stuart (Teresa) Sebright of Allegan; 11 grandchildren; 8 step grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 12 step great grandchildren; 1 brother Merle (Pat) Stone of Hopkins; 1 sister, Janet Boysen of Allegan; brother-in-law, Greyson (Ethel) Warren of Hamilton. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Jean Warren. Memorial services were held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 9, at the Friendship Bible Church in Hopkins. BAKER -- Harvey M. Baker, aged 91, of Hopkins Twp., passed away, Monday, February 25, 2002, at Allegan General Hospital. He is survived by his cousin, Leonard Hoerner; nieces and nephews, Thomas Ring, Marilyn Ring Larson, Bernard Baker, Shirley Baker Gigowski, Patricia Baker Furst, Mary Baker, Sharon Baker Goodrich; special friend, Glenda Hodgman; also many cousins; great nieces and nephews. Harvey was preceded in death by his nephew, Don Ring. Funeral & Committal Services were held 11:00 am, Thursday, February 28, at the funeral home with Rev. Jeff Smalla of Moline Baptist Church officiating. Interment in Maplewood cemetery. Memorials may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan County. DEAN -- G. Donavan Dean, 75, long time Middleville resident, passed away Tuesday morning, February 26, 2002 in Grand Rapids. Donavan was born in Wayland, MI on June 13, 1926, the son of Herbert and Ruby (Snyder) Dean. Donavan graduated from Wayland High School in 1944. He met Dorothy G. Crosby of Norfolk, England, while living in the Battle Creek area, and they were married
on July 13, 1951. After serving in the United States Army in Korea, Don, Dorothy and their family settled in Grand Rapids, where Don began working for the Lear/Siegler Corp. in their Computer Records and Customer Service Departments, a position he held for 34 years. In 1963, the Deans moved to Middleville, where they became active in community affairs. Don served several terms on the Middleville Village Council and served 33 years on the local Library Board. He was a past member of the Middleville Lions Club and helped found the Thornapple Heritage Association, where he served for many years as it's president. He was a current member of the American Legion Post in Caledonia, the West Michigan Buttoneers, and several historical and genealogical organizations. After their retirement, the Deans began to spend their summers at their cabin in Christmas, MI, where they worked for the National Park Service at Munising Falls guiding tours and giving demonstrations and were involved with the Hiawatha Native Plant Program. The Deans also worked, assisting teachers and children, through the Kettle Lake School C.L.A.S.S. program. Don enjoyed button collecting and his collection of American Pattern Glass, as well as music, weaving, nature lore and many other activities. Don will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Dorothy; his children, David & Marta (Dean) DesJardin of Hastings, Rebecca (Dean) Whitney of Grand Rapids, and Carl & Robin (Dean) Schleh of Northville; 6 grandchildren, Hillary & Jacob Blough, Michelle Whitney and Sam and Jennifer (Whitney) McHerron, and Lauren and Kenneth Schleh; 3 great-grandchildren, Austin, Jordan and Devon; his sister Leona (Dean) Westover of Grand Rapids, and sister-in-laws, Mrs. Elma (James) Dean of Florida and Margaret (Crosby) Arthur of Nova Scotia; as well as many nieces, nephews and good friends. Funeral services were held Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Beeler Funeral Home with internment at Mt. Hope cemetery in Middleville.
