Mr. James H. Newell
James H. Newell, age 72 of Vanderbilt died Thursday November 16, 2006 at Tendercare. Mr. Newell was born in Montmorency County on March 27, 1934 to Charles W. and Hildur M. (Hermanson) Newell. He was raised in Lewiston and moved to Vanderbilt in 1964. Mr. Newell served in the United States Army in Germany. He worked as a sawer for O.W. Rowley and Sons in Vanderbilt (later purchased by Red Wing). He loved fishing, and also enjoyed hunting, camping or a day outdoors cutting wood. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren. On October 4, 1968 he married the former Lenora Hill. She preceded him in death on Feb 27, 2006. He is survived by his children, Raymond (Sheena) Newell of Gaylord, Penny Sayle of Virginia, Jim Newell of Vanderbilt, Ken (Catherine) Newell of Gaylord, Roberta (Rodney) Haworth of Gaylord, Linda (Randy) Cole of Vanderbilt Art Hill of Vanderbilt, Ron (Kim) Hill of Johannesburg; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Pete Newell; and 2 sisters, Lillian Ellis and Edna Madison. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 20, 2006 at 11 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Evergreen Hill cemetery in Vanderbilt. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 12–6 PM and on Monday from 10 AM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the family through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mr. Randy Ogden
Randy Ogden, age 43 of Gaylord, died Thursday, Sept 7, 2006. He was born in Petoskey on February 28, 1963 and was raised in Gaylord. He was a 1981 graduate of Gaylord High School and later attended Central Michigan University. Randy had worked for Mel’s Amoco and was a tennis pro at Hidden Valley Resort and Windermere Resort in Naples, Florida. In 1989 he began a career with Gaylord Ford, which, over the years led to his most recent position of sales manager. Randy loved the outdoors and had a passion for hunting and golfing. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, September 18, 2006 at 11 a.m. from the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church, Rev. James Mathis officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Sunday from 4-8 PM, and Monday at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Randy is survived by his wife, Jackie; sons, Philip (Elizabeth) Tobias of Dillon, CO, Shawn (Katherine) Tobias of Gaylord; sister, Michelle ”Missy” (Rod) Patterson of Roscommon; parents, Bruce and Trudy Ogden of Gaylord; nieces and nephews, Garrett, Paige, Elizabeth, Tommy and Jeremy; and grandmother, Juanita Somerville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Randy Ogden Memorial Fund, to assist other cancer patients and their families with treatment and travel expenses, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Mr. William “Bill” R. Ouimet
William “Bill” R. Ouimet, age 66 of Gaylord, died Friday, Oct. 6th At Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ouimet was born on March 26, 1940 in Ecorse, MI., and spent the early part of his life in the Trenton-Wyandotte area. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, and moved up to Gaylord in 1971. He owned and operated Bills Automotive Shop for a number of years, and worked as a mechanic at various other places of employment after he sold his business. He also was a bus driver for the Gaylord Community School System for over 20 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of the F.O. E. #1825 in Gaylord, and the Gaylord Harley-Crue Club. His hobbies included playing pool, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing the drums. He will be remembered as a very personable fellow. Bill is survived by his children, Dee (Chris) McCants of Akron, OH and Randy (Tina) of Westland; five grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Joshua and Jonathon McCants, and Alexander Ouimet; and brothers, Albert Ouimet of Wyandotte and Edward Ouimet. A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2006, at 4 PM from the Gaylord Eagles Hall. Memorial contributions appreciated to the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc., P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI. to help cover funeral expenses, with any excess to be used for the organizations of the Gaylord Eagles Club, the Harley-Crue Club, or the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Patrick W. Perry
Patrick W. Perry, age 31 of Grand Blanc, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006. He was born April 15, 1975. He was a member of Iron Workers Local #25. Patrick is survived by his parents, Whilden and Caroline (O’Rourke) Perry of Grand Blanc; brothers, Whilden Jr., Randy Ray, and Michael, all of Grand Blanc; sisters, Elizabeth Koscielniak and Joann Easter, both of Vanderbilt. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1-8 PM and on Saturday from 11 AM until the time of services.Memorial contributions may be made through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Mrs. Louise Esther Puroll
Louise Esther Puroll, 83, of Elmira died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, where she received loving and compassionate care. She was born in Elmira to the late James and Antonette (G`lowa) Kolasa. She worked for Precision Tools in Chicago after receiving her degree in engineering. Later, she worked for the United States Postal Service until her second child was born. She was a life long member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Elmira, as well as a member of the St. Thomas Altar Society, and a Catechism teacher for many years. On June 26, 1948, Louise married the love of her life, Alex Puroll, at St. Thomas Church in Elmira. Their marriage celebrated 50 anniversaries and their union was blessed by 10 wonderful children who survive her, Constance (Robert) Dullock of Midland, Joyce (Bruce) Brennan of Lansing, Therese (Joseph) Doremire of Arizona, Florian (Patricia) Puroll of Elmira, Martin (Judith) Puroll of Clarkston, Delores (Daniel) Myslakowski of Lake Orion, Florence (Stephen) Hajek of Petoskey, Dominic Puroll of Elmira, Norbert (Bonnie) Puroll of Gaylord, and Barbara (Robert) Lidtke of Superior Township. Louise enjoyed many beautiful times with her children and their spouses. Louise is also survived by her 14 grandchildren, Melissa Johnson, Julianne (Kevin) Knowles, Betsy and James Brennan, Joshua and Bridgette Doremire, Michael (Katie) Puroll, Jacqueline (Angelo) Georgiou, Nicholas and Steven Puroll, Daniel and Ryan Myslakowski, Stephanie and Jamie Hajek. She is also survived by three great-granddaughters, Faith and Haley Johnson, and Ashtyn Knowles. Surviving brother and sister include James Kolasa and Sr. Joyce Kolasa of Elmira. She was preceded in death by her brother Sylvester Kolasa. Louise loved canning and cooking for her family and friends. She was very loving, openhearted, and always welcomed friends and family into her home. She enjoyed writing personal letters to her friends, children, and family and writing Polish to her cousins in Poland. She was a walking book of family history of her family and members of the Elmira community. Funeral services were held at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, September 30, where Father John McCracken of St. Mary's Cathedral officiated. Visitation was held on Friday at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. St. Thomas Rosary Society offered a rosary on Friday evening. Burial was at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic cemetery in Elmira. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548 Gaylord, MI 49735.

Mr. Casimer C. “Kise” Samkowiak
Casimer C. “Kise” Samkowiak, 80, lifelong resident of Gaylord died on Friday, October 27, 2006. Mr. Samkowiak was born January 25, 1926 in Gaylord to Frank and Mary (Lewandowski) Samkowiak. For 40 years he was a milkman and a truck driver for various area businesses. His true pleasure in life came from spending time with his family. On May 20, 1952 he married the former Barbara Burd, who survives. The couple raised eight children Charles (Judy) of Gaylord, Linda Owen of Sault Ste. Marie, Marlene Pagel of Gaylord, Michael (Colleen) of Gaylord, Brian (Kim) of Johannesburg, Lorrie (Bill) Artman of West Branch, Kevin (Linda) of Elmira, and Jack (Missi) of Gaylord. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren, Greg, Luke, Samantha and Jordan Pagel, Jennifer VanDaele, Dee Crosby, Tammy Pickelman, Stacy, Gerri and Gordon Gardner, Stefanie McLain, Becca and Mel Owen, Kody Smith, Amy, Nicole, Andrew, Travis, Chelsy, Meggan, Chad, Austin, Kayla, Alex and Bailey Samkowiak; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sophie Borowiak of Gaylord, Eleanor Aho of Brutus, and brother, Norman Samkowiak of Gaylord. Mr. Samkowiak was preceded in death by his parents, Fran and Mary; brothers, Mack, Alex and Julian, and sisters, Anna Failing and Julia Latuszek. FUNRAL SERVIES will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at 1 p.m. from St. Mary cathedral, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will take place on Monday, October 30 from 4-8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 12 noon until the time of the service. An Altar Rosary Society rosary will be offered Monday at 4:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Samkowiak family, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Thomas Michael Sines
Thomas Michael Sines, age 65 of Gaylord died Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at home. He was born on March 23, 1941 in Portland, MI. He spent his childhood in Ionia and later enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served four years. In 1973, Tom moved from Walled Lake to Gaylord. He worked for Schlumberger Oil Service in Gaylord from 1973-86. He also owned his own trucking company, leasing to UAC Limited. In 1992, Tom went to work for Johnson Oil, retiring this year in February. Tom is survived by his wife, the former Dotty June Gregson, who he married in Flint on May 18, 1962. Also surviving are three children, Brenda Rehkopf of Gaylord, Melinda (Mitch) Pollock of Gaylord, and Tonya (Mike) Huffman of Mancelona; grandchildren, Aaron, Blaze, Jazzmyn, Tyler, Taylor, Michael Jr., Thomas, Spencer, Michelle and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Aliza, Bella, and Skylar; his mother, Martha Sines of Novi; brothers and sisters, Sandy (Larry) Panks of Ionia, Nancy (Bob) Lash of Ann Arbor, Barb (Jim) Bell of Ionia, Mary (Tim) Lanz of Ionia, Pat (Jane) Hummel of Ionia, John (Carol) Hummel of Ionia, Dave (Crissy) Sines of Texas, Brenda Proctor of Lowell and Dawn (Kenny) Willis of Missouri; several nieces and nephews; and close family friend, Larry Large. He was preceded in death by a grandson Markus Huffman, his father Merlin Hummel and his biological parents Thomas Sines and Helen Hummel. Tom loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, enjoyed hunting, playing golf, softball, fishing and anything outdoors. Funeral services from the Nelson Funeral Home will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2006. Visitation at the funeral home will be held on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Doreen Taylor
Doreen Taylor, age 75, of Gaylord, died Monday, October 16, 2006 at McReynolds Hall in Gaylord. She was born in Lancashire, England on July 3, 1931 to George and Doris (Redfern) Taylor. In 1968, she and her family moved to the United States and settled in the Center Line/Warren area. Doreen worked in Warren for several years in the accounts payable department of Lamb Technicon. After retiring in 1993, she moved to Gaylord where she owned and operated two businesses, first, Groveland B&B on M-32, and later the “Yarn Basket”, a yarn shop on Old 27 South. Doreen was an active member of the Gaylord Community Church where she enjoyed being active with Senior Ministry. She also enjoyed and her involvement with Gaylord Community Productions. Doreen also enjoyed knitting and she was an avid reader. Surviving is her daughter, Lorraine J. (Clayton) Hayes of Romeo; her son, Steven M. Ward of Gaylord; four grandchildren, Zachary, Phillip, Shaun and Evan Hayes all of Romeo; brother, Ronald E. (Ruth) Taylor of Mission, British Columbia, Canada. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Friday, October 20, 2006 at 11 AM from the Gaylord Community Church, Pastor Steve Scheer officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will take place on Thursday from 1-8 PM and at the church on Friday from 10 AM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gaylord Community Church or to McReynolds Hall, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mrs. Eva Annette Vertican
Eva Annette Vertican age 82 died Monday, October 16, 2006. Born December 19, 1923 in St. Clair, Annette was the fifth of seven children born to Mary Elizabeth (Hendrick) and Charles Benjamin Englert. Annette was married to Carl F. Vertican for 60 years and five children were born to them. Annette was preceded in death by her husband, Carl and their youngest son Scott (Gayla). She is survived by her siblings Mary Booth of Florida, Dorothy O’Neill of Marysville, Erma Kasemeyer of Smiths Creek and Charles Jr. of Texas. Also surviving her are the “joys of her life,” her children Carl Jr. (JoAnne) of California, Carole (John) Bearss of Beaver Island. Gary (Georgia) of California and David (Diane) of Gaylord. Her 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren also survive her and treasure wonderful memories of their Grandma “Oma”. She will be remembered by all who knew her and loved her for her generosity, her patience, her resilience, her quick smile, her giving spirit and especially her unselfish love for her family. A funeral service will be held in Annette’s honor at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 11 o’clock. Her body will rest until the Resurrection in the family plot at Otsego Lake Township cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Nelson Funeral Home on Friday from 3-7 PM and on Saturday from 10 AM until the time of services.

Mr. Ralph A. Weber
Ralph A. Weber, age 72 of Alanson and formerly of Gaylord died Thursday, October 26, 2006. Mr. Weber was born October 25, 1934 in Charlton Township, the son of Albert and Addie (Roher) Weber. He was raised in Otsego County, graduated from Johannesburg High School and later entered the military and served in the US Army. After the service he began working for Standard Products in Gaylord and retired as personnel director after 44 years of employment. After retirement he volunteered his time at the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church. He was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and also enjoyed gardening, fishing and spending his winters in Arizona. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Ralph is survived by his wife, Gertrude; his children, Robert, Debra (Dan) Harlukowicz, David (Cheryl) and Angie (Kurt) Thomas all of Gaylord; 13 grandchildren; brother, Glen Weber of Gaylord; sisters, Lorelei Moyes of Gaylord, Jean Harrison of Virginia and Helen Hill of Alabama; stepdaughters, Rhonda (Bob) Goode, Lori (Dave) Reiff and Tonia (Jason) Bickford. He was preceded in death by his first wife Eileen (Cunningham) Weber and his sister Ruth Weber. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 30, 2006 at 11 AM from the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church, Rev. James Mathis officiating. Burial will take place at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Sunday from 2-8 PM and at the church on Monday beginning at 10 AM. Memorial contributions may be made through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mrs. Elizabeth Whyte
Elizabeth Whyte, age 95, of Gaylord and formerly of Grosse Point, died Monday, September 25, 2006 at McReynolds Hall.
She was born Sept. 20, 1911 in Bay City.
Mrs. Whyte has been a resident of Gaylord since 1968.
She was a devout member of St. Mary Cathedral.
Mrs. Whyte is survived by her children, Bill Whyte, Kathy Schaffner, Ann LaFond, and David Whyte; 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son Michael Whyte and her husband W. P. Whyte.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Whyte will be held on Friday, September 29, 2006 at 11 AM from St. Mary Cathedral.
Rev. John McCracken officiating. Family will gather on Friday at the church beginning at 10AM.
Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Cathedral through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.
