Mrs. Patricia Blake Gilardy
Patricia Blake Gilardy, age 80, of Rochester MN, formerly of Gaylord, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. She was born July 27, 1925 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she was raised until moving to Detroit at age 6. Moving to Gaylord in 1953, she raised her family and was very active in the community. She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral, Otsego County Historical Society and RSVP. She loved to paint, write, garden and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Gilardy recently had moved to Rochester, MN to be with her daughter and had been home to visit friends and family. Funeral services for Mrs. Gilardy will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 12:30 p.m. from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John Mc Cracken officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday at the church beginning at 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Mrs. Gilardy is survived by her children, William H. (Linda) Gilardy of Hawaii, Pamela (Doug) Madden of Hawaii and Gaylord, Anne (Glenn) Friedly of Gaylord and Florida, Mary Ellen Lanouette of Billings, MT, Amy (Jim) Andrews of Rochester, MN; 12 grandchildren; and brother Richard Blake of Milford. Mr. William M. Karby
William M. Karby, 81, of Mancelona, died Wednesday, July 13, 2006 at Tendercare of Gaylord. He was born January 8, 1925 in Detroit to Martin and Mary (Cichoski) Karbowniczek. During World War II, Bill served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. On April 19, 1947 he married
Bernadine E. Wozny in Detroit. Bill lived in Detroit for many years and later in Bloomfield. He worked as a drafting engineer at Ex-Cell-O for many years until their closing. During that time he spent time working for the company in Russia. Later he worked for Focus Hope until retirement. Bill was a member of St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Gaylord Lions Club, the Mancelona American Legion and the Mancelona Township Fire Department. While living at Lakes of the North, he was instrumental in the formation of the association security detail. He also enjoyed woodworking. In addition to his wife Bernadine, he is survived by five daughters, Suzanne (Larry) Robb of Redford Twp., Kathleen (Todd) Beebe of Clarkston, Barbara Karby of Solon Springs, WI, Teresa (David) Archbold of Rochester, Amy (Jeff) Henley of Williamsburg; 7 grandsons; 3 granddaughters; and a sister, Eugenia Szmania of Rochester. He was preceded in death by a sister Lillian Nowak. Funeral services from St. Mary Cathedral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2006. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2006 and on Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. A parish rosary will be offered on Sunday at 4 p.m. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery in Mancelona. Mr. Charles D. Knouse
Charles D. Knouse, age 72 of Alba, Michigan died Friday, June 30, 2006 at his home. He was born in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania on September 17, 1933 and lived there until age 17. He then served in the United States Air Force and after being discharged moved to Nevada. He lived in Nevada for 40+ years and had retired from the Clark County (Nevada) Assessor’s office in 1995. He had been living in Alba, Michigan since June 2005. His hobbies included rock hunting and he was a true animal lover. Mr. Knouse will be remembered by his family as a wonderful father who loved his family and treasured his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Dorothea “Dotty”; 3 children, William Richard Knouse of Utah, Carl (Dawn) Knouse of Gaylord, MI and Vicki Porter of Indiana; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and sister, Sherry (Harry) Reichner of Mississippi. His parents, Charles Sr. and Mildred (Snyder) Knouse and his brother David preceded him in death. The family requests donations may in memory of Charles Knouse be made to your local animal shelter. Mrs. Louise B. Lenartowicz
Louise B. Lenartowicz, age 89 of Gaylord died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at Robert’s Gentle Care Adult Foster Care Home in Gaylord. Mrs. Lenartowicz was born in Gaylord on March 22, 1917, the daughter of Valentine & Rose (Holewinski) Kwapis. She attended St. Mary School and later moved to Pontiac for many years, returning to Gaylord in 1971. She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish and St. Mary Altar Rosary Society. On November 9, 1940 in Gaylord she married
her husband Louis, who survives. Also surviving is one son, Thomas (Lisa) Lenartowicz of Grand Rapids; two grandsons, Josh and Nathan; three sisters, Gertrude Wojtkowiak and Emilia (Raymond) Cilwa of Gaylord, and Stella Eilola of Woodland, California; and one brother, Clement Kwapis of Ypsilanti. Her sister Julia Kobylczak preceded her in death in 2000. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection cemetery in Gaylord. Mr. Larry C. Loshaw
Larry C. Loshaw, age 63 of Vanderbilt passed away Saturday, July 29, 2006. Larry was born December 8, 1942 in Gaylord and was raised in the Vanderbilt area. He made a living as a mason, working for 40 years as an independent contractor. His two sons are also in the mason business, learning their skills from their father. Larry worked all over Michigan and everyone knew him by his masonry work. “You can’t throw a rock around Northern Michigan without hitting something he built.” That is his legacy. Larry also loved fly-fishing, hunting, riding Harleys, and caring for his horse Yo-Yo. He liked NASCAR, and enjoyed time spent at Elmira Raceway. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Marjorie Loshaw, and brothers, Richard and Harold. He is survived by his wife Beverly; children, Brian of Grand Rapids, Jeff (Jackie) of Traverse City, and Karen Loshaw of Wolverine; 3 grandchildren, Josh, Matthew, and Michael; step-children, Andrea Boyd of Gaylord, and Mathew, Sara, and Jon Boyd, all of Vanderbilt. He is also survived by brothers, Robert and Terry of Vanderbilt, and sister, Johanna Shaffer of Kentucky. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at 3:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Rev. LeRoy Sutfin, officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Hill cemetery. Mr. George Charles Macklem
George Charles Macklem, age 82 of Gaylord, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006, at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mr. Macklem was born on August 19, 1923 in Detroit, MI., where he spent most of his childhood and later years. He lived in Tucson, Arizona for approximately 25 years, and moved to Gaylord in 1998. He enjoyed collecting stamps, and coins. He is survived by his 3 daughters, Andrea (James) Churchill of Washington, Sharon Macklem of Gaylord, and Leslie Dumas of Arizona. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Laura Gonzolas, Leslie Reed, Kelly Ungerman, Jeremy Macklem, and Kevin Dumas; 11 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at 12 Noon from the Nelson Funeral Home, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Mr. Charles Nemeth
Charles Nemeth, age 86 of Gaylord died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006 at his home. Mr. Nemeth was born on December 7, 1919 in Dante, Virginia. He moved to River Rouge, MI. at a young age, and graduated from River Rouge High School. He attended Eastern Michigan University where he played football, and still holds the record for the longest punt, 99 yards. Following school, he enlisted in the Navel Air Corps after Pearl Harbor. He flew “hellcats” from the Air Craft carrier Bennington. After the war, he completed his BS Degree at E.M.U. It was there that he met his wife, Marilyn, whom he married
on April 5, 1947 in Detroit. They have been married
59 years. He taught physical education at Mt. Clemens High School and coached ninth grade football for 26 years, as well as coaching swimming, basketball, and baseball. He was named a candidate for induction into the Coach’s Hall of Fame at Mt. Clemens High School. The family had vacationed in Gaylord since 1956, and upon retiring in 1976, moved to their summer cottage permanently. He enjoyed skiing, both downhill and cross-country, bowling, and golfing, and was a member of Gaylord Country Club. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; children, Jeanne (Larry) Hufnagel, Susan (Charles) Richards, John (Pam), and Katherine. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Alex, and Bill. Memorial services will be held at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord on Saturday, August 12, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. The family will accept visitors at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Mrs. Mary Louise Nobliski
Mary Louise Nobliski, 84, of Gaylord, died Tuesday, July 4. 2006 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 22, 1922 in Rutland, VT to Charles and Amelia (Lent) Perugi. On August 22, 1942 she married
Andrew Nobliski in Utica, MI. They lived in the Detroit area until moving to Gaylord from Armada Township in 2002. Mary Louise enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Sr. of Gaylord; sons, Andrew Jr. and his wife Eileen of Gaylord, and Michael and his wife Jan of Henderson, NV; daughter, Cindy Nobliski and her husband Gary Stone of Custer, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers and three sisters. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 11:00am-1:00pm, followed by funeral services at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery. Mr. Norman L. Pickvet
Norman L. Pickvet, age 70, of Gaylord died Saturday, August 5, 2006 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. He was born June 3, 1936 in Pinconning where he was raised on the family Dairy Farm. In 1964 he moved to Lake Orion, and owned Bald Mountain Riding Stable for over 30 years. On April 16, 1955 at St. Ann’s Church in Pinconning, he married
his wife Marilyn. He moved to the Gaylord area in 2000. He loved his family and treasured his children and grandchildren. He also had a great passion for horses. Mr. Pickvet is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn; his children, Cindy (David) Chaffin, Norman Jr., Gary Sr., Kelly La Fayette, Gary Jr. and Corey all of Gaylord; grandchildren, Amber (Fred) Rushford, Aimee (Donny) Mellinger, Ian Chaffin, Connor Chaffin, Jessica Pickvet, Justin Pickvet, and Kristina, Britnee, Nicole and Jordan LaFayette; great-granddaughter, Alexis Rushford; brothers, Phil (MaryAnn), Albert (Barb) and Lenny (Nancy), all of Pinconning; and sisters, Donna LaPonsey of Pinconning, Alice Morris of Alanson, Norma Smallwood of Birch Run, and Sister Bobby Pickvet of Pinconning. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Flora (Lozon) Pickvet, his grandson Daniel Chaffin, brother Jimmy, and sister Angie Lipka. Mr. George Prokop
George Prokop, age 90 of Wolverine died Friday, July 7, 2006 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. George was born in Detroit on April 4, 1916 and had been a resident of Wolverine the past 50+ years. He worked in the maintenance department for the Wolverine Schools for 26 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. Mr. Prokop was preceded in death by his wife Margaret in 1985, his parents Frank & Josephine (Kastl) Prokop and his brothers Frank & Bill Prokop. He is survived by his children, Barbara (Thomas) Theaker of Boyne City, George A. (Rebecca) Prokop of Wolverine, Judy (Steve) Fitzner of Wolverine, Carol (Mike) Jaroche of Wolverine, Diane (Kim) Widrig of Marshall, MI; 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; sister, Josephine Urban of Westland, sisters-in-law, Evelyn Prokop of Westland and Helen Sherman of Wolverine. Mrs. Grace Marie Sommerfeld
Grace Marie Sommerfeld, age 84 of Lewiston died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Mrs. Sommerfeld was born in Detroit on May 15, 1922, was raised in the Detroit and Rochester areas and moved to Lewiston in the 1970’s. She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, including the church choir; the ladies society, the church-quilting program and she also took part in the preparation of church luncheons. Along with her love for gardening, she was a wonderful cook and was well known for her liver and onions. She will be missed by her friends and neighbors. Mrs. Sommerfeld was preceded in death by her husband Urban in 1986. Two brothers and one sister also preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Judy (Marty) Sepanik of Portage, Sharon (Bill) Dais of Washington, MI, Vicki (Dave) Zavasky of Gaylord, David (Geri) Sommerfeld of Colorado, Claudia (Marty) Gross of Highland; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Earl Cischke of McMillan; sisters, Gertrude Elrod of Troy and Bertha Rathburn of Swartz Creek. Mr. Richard J. Tumidanski
Richard J. Tumidanski, 77 of Cheboygan, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at home. He was born April 6, 1929 in Detroit to Walt and Mary (Szypulski) Tumidanski. On July 19, 1952, Richard married
Lorraine J. Magee. In 1970, they moved from Dearborn to Cheboygan. Richard worked as a welder for Lake Construction in Indian River until ill health forced his retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and motorcyclist. Richard is survived by his wife, Lorraine J.; four children, Danny (Sue) Tumidanski, Cindy (Lonnie) Baker, David (Tonya) Tumidanski and Debbie (Bernie) Brasseur, all of Cheboygan; fourteen grandchildren, Jane, Cherish, Mike, Tracy, Amy, Joe, Richard, Gerald, Tabby, Shanda, Zach, Felicia, John and Sarah; eleven great-grandchildren; and sisters Virginia and Jeannette. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Graveside memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 6, 2006, at Oak Hill cemetery. Mr. Theodore W. Werts
Theodore W. Werts, age 86, of Gaylord, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at McReynolds Hall. He was born in Gaylord on November 2, 1919 and has spent most of his life as an Otsego County resident. He graduated from Gaylord High School in 1938. He attended Ohio State University for a short time and lived in Ohio before moving back to Gaylord. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the Philippines in the US Army. After filling a term as the Otsego County Clerk/ Register of Deeds, Ted was elected to 33 Years of public service in that office. Ted was very active in the Congregational church including teaching Sunday school. He was also very active in his community including the Fire Department, Police Dept., Northland Sportsman Club, Boy Scouts, Mason’s, Little Village Board and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed airplanes, motorcycles, especially Indian and Harley Davidson’s and building boats. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 10, 2006 At Noon from the Nelson Funeral Home. The Rev. Susan Webeler officiating. The family invites friends to join them on Monday beginning at 11AM until time of service. Mr. Werts is survived by his wife Jane; children, Bruce (Catherine) Werts of Lake Ann, Mark (Carol) Werts of Onekama, and Susan Werts of Howell; grandchildren, Jennifer and Adam Werts; step-children, Linda (Larry) Augenstein of Grove City, Ohio; step-grandchildren, Kase Donaldson, Kelsey Inglish, and Connor Inglish.
