Nina R. Duffy
Monroe
Nina R. Duffy, age 70, passed away Monday, March 20, 2006 at Mercy-Memorial Hospital in Monroe after a long illness.
She was born Dec. 21, 1935 in Harland County, Ky. to parents Mary Ann (Bagley) and Grady Norris.
Nina is survived by two sons, Ira Earnhardt of Milan, and Jerome Earnhardt of Florida; one daughter, Sheila Raye of Ypsilanti; two sisters, Vianne Banotai of Van Buren and Alma Rich of Ypsilanti. Nina had 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jack Norris and Gordner Norris; and three sisters, Helen Schiller, Essie Boughan and Marie Durham.
Funeral services were held April 3 at Allore Chapel-Martenson Family of Funeral Homes. Burial took place at the London Township cemetery.
Donald Samual Maltby
Formerly of Milan
Donald Samual Maltby, 88, of Virginia Beach, Va. passed away March 16, 2006 at the Lake Taylor Hospital in Virginia Beach after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 16, 1918 in Milan to Harrison and Elmyra Maltby (Holmes). He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louise Barnett Maltby; three sisters, Catherine Maltby, Dorothy Parker, and Irene Desbrough; and one brother, Harrison Maltby.
He is survived by a sister, Geraldene Boudrie of Saline, and many nieces and nephews. His stepson and wife, Clyde and Patricia Barnette and their family in Virginia Beach also survive him.
Donald was a retired veteran of more than 40 years in the United States Navy and Merchant Marines and was very proud to have served his country and of his many experiences traveling around the world. He loved to tell of his fishing experiences at sea while traveling and continued to enjoy fishing while living in Virginia Beach. He also enjoyed gardening and working is his yard. Donald was a cook and baker during his years of service and continued his love for cooking and baking when he retired from the navy.
A private memorial service to celebrate his life took place on March 26 at the family cottage in North Carolina by the ocean where he loved to visit and fish.
Linnea Valjean Dornberger
Saline
Linnea Valjean Dornberger (nee Henning) died peacefully at home in Saline on April 21, 2006.
She was the beloved wife of Roger J. Dornberger of Saline, mother of Valerie Fifer of Saline and Kathy Hunt of Chelsea, as well as grandmother to seven grandchildren: April Fifer, Deanne Hunt, Joseph Hunt, Heather Fifer, Danny Fifer, Jamie Hunt and Kenny Fifer.
Valjean (sometimes "Jean," as she was known (she disliked her first name because people usually mispronounced it,) was born at home in Youngsville, Pa. to Alton and Mildred Henning on Nov. 21, 1929 (the official date - her mother always insisted it was the 20.) She graduated from nearby Sugar Grove High School where she was active in theater and cheerleading. Valjean also graduated from Orra Jean Beauty Academy in Erie, Pa. Known for her good looks (a full-blooded Swede,) she entered a beauty contest in Jamestown, N.Y. where Roger first saw her. Valjean and Roger were married
in Mayville, N.Y. on Sept. 4, 1954. They spent two years in Germany during Roger's enlistment in the U. S. Army. Valjean worked as a telephone operator and waitress in Jamestown, Monterey, Calif., Chicago, East Lansing and Ann Arbor as her husband pursued schooling and employment opportunities. Valjean was an avid reader who also loved dancing, music, animals and restaurants. For a time, she sold self-protection devices designed to prevent attacks against women. Valjean made friends wherever she went and will be missed by many in this country and in Germany.
Visitation was Tuesday, April 25 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave, Ann Arbor/ The funeral was at the same location on April 26. Burial followed at the Oakwood cemetery in Saline.
Donations in Valjean's name should be made to the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org) to aid in understanding a disease, which she fought courageously for 50 years.
SPC Robert "Rob" Hornbeck
Lapeer
Robert "Rob" Hornbeck, age 23, of Lapeer, Mich., passed away Friday, April 28.
Robert was born Feb. 10, 1983, in Maywood, Ill, to parents Eric Hornbeck and Tami Sims. Robert was a 2001 graduate of Lapeer East High School, and graduated with high honors, placing fourth in his class. After high school, he attended the University of Michigan for two years, majoring in psychology and English. Robert placed his school, his family and his life on hold to serve his country in the United States Army. He was a two-year veteran of the Iraqi Freedom Campaign where he earned the Combat Infantry man Badge.
Robert is survived by his mother, Tami (Bob) Erickson of Lapeer; his father Eric (Beth) Hornbeck of Dryden; his fiance, Amanda Swartz of Saline; a sister, Marianne Hornbeck of Lapeer; and his grandfather, Robert Hornbeck of Savannah, Ga.
Robert was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dale and Pauline Sims and grandmother, Marianne Hornbeck.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 4 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Bible Church, 923 S. Main St., Lapeer, with Rev. Susan C. Rich officiating. Burial will take place at Hunters Creek cemetery, Lapeer.

Kenneth Lloyd Gauntlett
Ypsilanti
Kenneth Lloyd Gauntlett, age 76, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2006 at University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor.
He was born the son of Zach H. Gauntlett Sr. and Helen M. LeBaron in Milan, on Dec. 28, 1929. Kenneth was a lifelong Washtenaw County resident living 62 years in Milan before moving to Ypsilanti. His brothers, Mack L. Gauntlett of Ann Arbor and Jean F. Gauntlett of Ypsilanti, survive him.

Otis O. Kanitz
Hartland
Formerly of Milan
Otis O. Kanitz, age 83, died Sunday morning, May 8, 2005 at Saline Evangelical Home with his family by his side. He was born on August 20, 1921 in Milan to Frank and Iva (Head) Kanitz. He graduated from Milan High School in 1939 where he played on the school's basketball team. He served in the Army during WWII, was a 4-H leader and worked for Mather Seal Co. of Milan for several years. He later was co-owner of Tel-Seal in Brighton. Otis was a life member of the Monroe Pony Pulling Association and former member of the Michigan Dynamometer Pony Association. On July 14, 1973 he married
Margaret Smith in Dundee and she preceded him in death on August 31, 2004.
Mr. Kanitz is survived by seven children: Larry (Marion) of Onsted, Leslie (Kathy) of Ida, Lonnie (Bonnie), Lynn (LuAnn), Sherry Howard, Dick Kanitz, and Dawn Kanitz all of Milan; 17 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren. His brother, Boyd Kanitz, preceded him in death.
Burial took place in London cemetery. Contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

Pauline Harriet (Polly) Geddes
Ann Arbor
Pauline Harriet Geddes, age 80, died Monday, May 9, 2005 of renal failure at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti. She was born August 15, 1924, in Detroit, the daughter of Lewis O. and Clara C. (Kline) Witherby. She spent many summers growing up in Caseville, MI, on her grandparents' farm. She graduated high school in 1942 and was married
on August 29 of the same summer to Charles W. Geddes of Ann Arbor. He preceded her in death on December 1, 1993.
Polly worked as a homemaker, raising six children and helped out on the dairy farm, which has been in the family since 1827. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and traveling. She was very involved with her family and her church, Ann Arbor House of Worship. Polly is survived by her children: Chuck (Sheri) Geddes from Lexington, Tenn, Hannah (Bill) Wright from Parma, Jack (Becky) Geddes from Ann Arbor, Paul (Diane) Geddes from Oregon, Ill, Marti (Dan) Soenen from Rapid City, Mich, and Joe Geddes from Ann Arbor; also 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two brothers: David (Judy) Witherby from Kimberling, Mo., and Michael (Melda) Witherby from Jacksonville, Ala.: one sister, Patricia (Patsy) Palisano, from Lockport, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Suzanne.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 1:00 p.m. from the ROBISON-BAHNMILLER Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Drake. Burial will follow in the Harwood cemetery located in Pittsfield Twp. , Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan or the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home where friends may begin calling on Friday, May 13, between the hours of 5 - 9 p.m. and on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m.
Richard Earl Bredernitz
Formerly of Saline
Richard Bredernitz passed away Aug. 22, 2005 at El Centro Regional Medical Center in El Centro, Calif. He was 71 years old.
Richard was born on Sept. 7, 1933 in Alpena. On Nov. 1, 1950 he decided to see the world via the United States Navy. After serving on the "USS Philippine Sea" during the Korean conflict, he was discharged at Los Alamitos, Calif. in July 1954. He recently was awarded the "Korean War Service Medal" at a ceremony on the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, Calif. by the Republic of Korea. He met and wed Mary Helen Moreno of Calexico, Calif. on Sept. 11, 1953 and decided on making El Centro and the Imperial Valley his home for the next 52 years. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 11 years, and 29 years at the Naval Air Facility Fire Department until his retirement in 1997. Richard enjoyed hunting, cooking and gardening.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 at Hems Brothers Mortuary, 1975 S. 4th Street in El Centro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Bernadine Bredernitz of Saline; a sister and brother-in-law, Vickie and Dale Rothfuss of Saline; brother Robert McGirr and sister Peggy Floyd, both of Guyton, Ga.; grandson, Anthony Edward Smith of Imperial, Calif.
He is survived by: his wife Mary; children, Robert and Susie (Cooke) Bredernitz of Yuma, Ariz., Becky Bredernitz of Escondido, Calif. and Tina Bredernitz Smith of Imperial, Calif.; grandchildren, Daniel Richard Bredernitz of Escondido, Albert and Jamie (Olive) Bredernitz of Kingman, Ariz., Kim Bredernitz of Tempe, Ariz. and Robert Leftwich of Imperial; and great-grandchildren Kayla Bredernitz of Escondido, and Samuel, Abigail, Jesse, and Maggie Bredernitz of Kingman, Ariz.

Ida Gonzales

Ida Gonzales, 60, died Aug. 17, 2005 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
She was born October 17, 1944 in Texas.
Visitation and funeral were held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan on Monday, Aug. 22 with her nephew Mike Gonzales officiating. Burial followed in Marble Park cemetery.
She is survived by: her children, Elizabeth (Harrold) Dixon, Sylvia (Lee) Watkins, Cynthia (Kelvin) Russell, Leo Jr., Edward and Antonio (Evelyn) Gonzales; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers and six sisters. Her husband of 38 years, Leo Gonzales, preceded her in death in 2001.
Donald F. Kelsey
Milan
Donald F. Kelsey, 80, died Friday morning, Aug. 19, 2005 at Heartland Health Care Center-Ann Arbor.
He was born Nov. 21, 1924 in Milan to George and Ruth (Kreager) Kelsey. On June 28, 1952, he married
Marguerite Whitehead in Milan, and she survives. Don served in the navy during WWII, worked for Wolverine Plastics for 23 years before retiring from H&N Manufacturing in 1991. He also was a lifelong member of the Marble Memorial United Methodist Church and the Milan Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors besides his wife include: a daughter Carolynn (Steven) Lenhoff of Southfield; a son Kevin R. (MaryKay) Kelsey of Winter Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren, Bradley and Carissa Lenhoff, Kristin, Nathan, Ryan and Erik Kelsey; and two brothers; George (Thelma) of Milan and Ronald (Mary) of Macon.
The funeral was held Tuesday at Marble Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Kristine Sigal officiating. Burial with military honors under the auspices of Washtenaw County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Marble Park cemetery, Milan.

Alice Sheldon
Ypsilanti
Alice Sheldon, 71 passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005 at Arbor Hospice Residence.
She was born Nov. 8, 1934 in Whittaker, Mich., the daughter of George and Lottie (Bissell) Towler. On June 14, 1957, she married
Fred Sheldon in Whittaker and he preceded her in death Oct. 15, 1983. Alice was a member of Lincoln Community United Methodist Church and was an avid bowler. She drove a school bus for Lincoln Consolidated Public Schools for more than 30 years.
Survivors include: three daughters, Paula Rae (Warren) Butzin of Ypsilanti, Pam (Curt) Adkins of Milan and Perri Sue (Danny) Saunders of White Pigeon, Mich., one son, Peter Lynn Sheldon of Conn., eight grandchildren, Lindsey, Chris, Joe, Amanda, Anthony, Matt, Katie and Jake; one great grandson, Kash Roy Keehl; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, her parents and one brother, Don Towler, preceded her in death.
The funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at Lincoln Community United Methodist Church, 9074 Whittaker Rd. with Rev. Beverly Marr officiating. Burial will follow in Alban cemetery.
Contributions may be made to either the church or Arbor Hospice Residence. Envelopes are available at Stark Funeral Service Moore Memorial Chapel.
Margetta E. Wight
Formerly of Saline
Margetta E. Wight, 91, of Zephyrhills, Fla. passed away on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at Royal Oaks Hospice in Dade City, Fla.
She was born in Fostoria, Ohio and spent several years in Hillsdale County, Mich. She moved to Zephyrhills 25 years ago from Saline. She and her late husband, Elim Leonard Wight, owned and operated a dry cleaners in Saline. She was a member of the Elks Lodge in Saline.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, who passed away Aug. 23, 2004.
Survivors include: two nephews, John W. Miller of Jackson, Ga. and Jack Haman of Zephyrhills; and a niece, Margaret Wight of Zephyrhills.
