Fred Naylor Blackmore Sr.
Saline
Fred Naylor Blackmore, Sr. passed away at the Evangelical Home in Saline on Feb. 12, 2005.
He was born in Edwardsville, Ill. on Nov. 1, 1914. His parents were Frederick Harold and Ella Naylor Blackmore.
He is survived by his second wife, Dorothy; his son Fred N. "Skip" (Debbie) Blackmore Jr. of Saline; two daughters, Barbara (Richard) Ludtke of Clio, Mich. and Margaret Blackmore of Denver, Col.; a sister, Patricia (Robert) Seyfarth of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, Roger (Shirley) Blackmore of Port Charlotte, Fla.; also many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Fred graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in electrical engineering and was active on the swim team, specializing in diving. His engineering interest was lifelong. While in high school, he designed his own ham radio, pursuing that hobby and being active in it for years. During his working years, his experiences were in companies specializing in radio, radar, plastics and sporting goods, especially at General Electric. Eventually, he and his late first wife, Helen, founded the Blackmore Co. of Belleville, specializing in plastics. He made the first flower growing plug trays for growing seedlings. He was credited with changing the floral industry. He developed the first seeding and transplanting system for the production and marketing of flowering annuals and vegetables in the world. The Blackmore Co. as a result remains the leader in North America for floricultural equipment. Packaging for seedling production and marketing of flowers is still the main product of the company. They produce enough containers to grow two billion plants. The Blackmore Co. is a family owned business, employing 50 people, with his son Skip as owner and grandson, Scott Blackmore, running the company.
Fred's retirement hobbies were fishing and lapidary work. He made his own faceting machine and spent many hours producing beautiful pieces of artwork. He also traveled all over the United States looking for specimens, such as turquoise to use and display. He was a member of a faceter's guild and the Tulip City Gem and Mineral Club of Holland, Mich.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A family service honoring his life will be arranged at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Floriculture Industry Research and Scholarship Trust, donated to the Fred Blackmore Grant and would be appreciated by the family.
