Mrs. Elsie M. Guldenstein
Elsie M. Guldenstein, age 88 of Lewiston, died Sunday, June 19th in Lapeer Co. Medical Care Facility. She was born on July 4, 1916 in Croswell, MI., the daughter of William and Cora Bell Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband Irvin in 2002, and three brothers. She is survived by her children, Robert G. Guldenstein of Lewiston, Doris Distelrath of Port Huron, Irvin “Butch” Guldenstein of Marine City, Delores Zavislak of Lapeer, and Sherry Chivers of Commerce, CO. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Laverne Lewis of St. Clair, and brother-in-law, Herb Guldenstein of East China. Interment will be at Hillside cemetery in St. Clair, MI.
Mrs. June Harvey
June Moyle Harvey, 79, of Gaylord, and formerly of Garden City, passed away on August 2, 2005 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petosky. She was born in Dodgeville, Houghton County, MI to Joseph and Marcelline (Snell) Moyle on February 15, 1926. Upon graduation from high school in 1943, she moved to Detroit where she was employed. On January 12, 1946, she married
Walter L. Harvey Jr. upon his return from 3 years in the armed forces. She is survived by her loving husband, Walter; two sons, Daniel (Brenda) of Pinckney and James (Denise) of Belleville; one daughter, Sheryl (Greg) Bonfiglio of Howell; 9 grandchildren, Daniel Jr. (Kim) Harvey, Edward (Paula) Harvey, Kimberly (Karl) Harvey, Lisa Dow, Jim Harvey Jr., Darren Harvey, Nicholas Ploch, Timothy Ploch and Ryan Ploch; and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a stepsister, Florence Burich of Dodgeville and a stepbrother, Charles Little of Houghton, and 2 nieces. She was preceded in death by one brother, Llewellyn. Walter and June were married
59 ½ years and resided in Garden City until their retirement in 1982. June was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, and a member of the Faith Circle. She was also a member of the Otsego Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for 22 years and the Homemakers Extension Group for many years. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, with the Rev. John Naile officiating, followed by interment at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation was held from 2-8 p.m. Friday, August 5, 2005 from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. Mrs. Nellie M. Hill
Nellie M. Hill, age 92 of Vanderbilt died Thursday, June 09, 2005 at her home. Mrs. Hill was born on May 3, 1913 in Harrisville, MI., and has lived in Vanderbilt since 1979. She has previously lived in the Saginaw/Bay City area, and had been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for 30 years. She loved to cook, and enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Most importantly, she was a very special grandma. Mrs. Hill is survived by her children, Madeline Martin of Oregon, Marilyn Redinger of Howell, Jacqueline (Thomas) Drayton also of Howell, and Richard F. (Natalie) Hill of Fowlerville. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; brother, Wilfred LaBrosse of Roscommon; daughter-in-law, Vickie Hill of Fowlerville; and best friend and loyal companion Brit. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell in 1989; son Russel G.; and sisters, Lucia Rafferty and Evelyn Cushman. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, June 18th at 11:30 a.m. from Holy Redeemeer Church in Vanderbilt, Fr. John McCracken officiating. Family will accept visitors beginning at 10:30 until the time of service. Interment will be in Evergreen Hill cemetery in Vanderbilt. Miss Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Iknayan
Liz Iknayan, age 18 of Gaylord died Wednesday, July 20, 2005. She was born in Gaylord on October 26, 1986 and was a 2005 graduate of Gaylord High School. She was very athletic and participated in several sports including soccer, basketball and cross-country running. She loved music. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2005 at 1 PM from the First United Methodist Church, Reverend John Naile officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 5-9 PM and will continue on Saturday at the church from 12 Noon until the time of services. Liz is survived by her father Dr. Charles N. (Nancy)Iknayan of Bessemer; her mother, Maggie Jensen of Gaylord; her sisters, Leah of Denton, TX, Robin of Gaylord and Mt. Mr. Thomas "Tom" Judge
Tom Judge, 66, of Gaylord, formerly of Winn, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many, passed away suddenly in his tree blind while hunting and shortly after taking his 78th and final buck on Saturday, October 1, 2005 in Mt. Pleasant. Tom was born May 1, 1939 in Winn, Michigan the son of Joseph Daniel Judge and Margaret Mary (Fox) Judge. He graduated from Shepherd High School where he participated in all sports including football, baseball, basketball, track and hockey. He graduated from Central Michigan University with a Masters and Specialist Degree in Education. He marrie Virginia Marie Scheid on June 29, 1968 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. His first teaching job took him to Holton High School. He also taught at Roseville High, Ionia High School and then in 1976 he took the position of Assistant Principal and Athletic Director of Gaylord High School. In 1990 he became the Assistant Superintendent at Gaylord retiring in 1997. Tom also served in the National Guard for many years where he cooked for his fellow guardsman. Tom was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Gaylord, a past recipient of the Athletic Director of the Year award, an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed building and remodeling projects, and above all else he was a loving husband and father and enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. Tom is survived by his wife Virginia "Ginger" Judge of Gaylord; daughter Maureen (Trent) Naumcheff of Scottville, Mi.; son, Christopher Thomas Judge of E. Lansing; grandson, Jason Thomas Naumcheff; three sisters, Joanne (George) Swogger of Traverse City, Janette (Larry) Murra of Traverse City, and Jeanne (Mike) Hottinger of Shepherd; two brothers, Pat (Lynne) Judge of Winn and Gerald (Marilyn) Judge of Kalkaska; also several aunts and uncles and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Daniel Judge. His funeral mass will be held Wednesday, October 5th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Gaylord with Fr. John McCracken officiating. Visitation will be held at Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. His interment will take place at Calvary cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with a graveside service to be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Mrs. Billie Hayes
Billie E. Hayes…beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. The most precious Christmas gift to her family. Billie passed November 17, 2005 at her daughter’s home in Indian River. Born Christmas Day 1918 to William and Grace Smith in Piggott, Arkansas. Billie grew up with one sister and three brothers, moving to Flint, MI after graduation from Piggott High School in 1935. She worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant until St. Patrick’s Day 1945 when she married
the love of her life Larry. They moved to Gaylord and operated a restaurant famous for her chicken dinners. They built the Hayes Motel (now the Friendship Shelter), which she operated after Larry’s death in 1966 until selling it in 1972. Billie was a life member of the Eagles Auxiliary #1825 Arie, RSVP Friends for Life and Otsego Memorial Hospital. Gone ahead to welcome Billie were her parents William and Grace Smith, husband Larry, brother William Smith, sister and brother-in-law Louise and Henry Robinson, sister-in-law Gloria Smith, nephews Jerry Lee Robinson, Jackie Robinson, Michael Smith and Bill Dubenion and beloved canine companion, Molly. Left to cherish her memory and love are her children, Pamela Hayes of Gaylord, Linda (Terry) Wiseley ("my boyfriend") of Indian River, Norman (Mary) Hayes of Elk Rapids, and Larry (Connie) Hayes of Gaylord; grandchildren, Melissa (Kevin) Olds of Virginia Beach, VA, Christina Wishart of Los Angeles, CA, Philip, Natalie and Nicole Hayes of Elk Rapids, Larry (Lisa) Hayes of Gaylord, Shelley (Fred) Blankenship of Alpena, David (LaTonya) Hayes of Flushing, Kim (Robb) Pickard of Middleville and Corey Wiseley of South Haven; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Corey, Caitlin, Caleb Blankenship, Jordan Hayes, Brendan, Booklin and Justin Hayes, Michael and Sarah Wiseley, and Beau Pickard. Also brothers, Ernest Smith of Lake Fenton and Robert (Clara) Smith of Summerfield, FL; sister-in-law, Peggy Smith of Louisville; nieces and nephews, Jim (Fran) Robinson, Larry (Shannon) Robinson, Sandy (Jacob Allen) Green, Bill Smith, Becky Debenion, Nancy (Wally) Oyler, Mark Smith, Marsha (Mark) Engelbrecht, Rachel (Jay) Kinney; several great-grandnieces and nephews, special friends Bill and Dona Wishart and many life-long Gaylord friends. Mom-May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest. At her wishes, cremation has taken place. A time to come together in tribute and thanksgiving to memorialize the gifts of Billie's precious life will be held on Saturday, December 10th at 11 am at the Nelson Funeral Home. The family will gather on Friday, December 9, at the Nelson FuneralHome from 4-7 PM and on Saturday from 10 AM until time of service. Mr. Edward Kuras
Mr. Edward T. Kuras, 78 of Gaylord died Thursday, November 17, 2005 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Mr. Kuras, a lifelong resident of Gaylord was born October 4, 1927, the son of Martin & Helen (Burhart) Kuras. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Kuras had worked for several local businesses including Glen’s Market, Mid State, the former Chalet Motor Lodge & Restaurant and Quality Farm & Fleet. He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish, St. Mary Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree and the VFW Clyde Wilkes Post. Mr. Kuras was preceded in death by his first wife Louise on Oct 6, 1982. On October 8, 1983 he then married
Eleanor Kucharek, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Michael (Julie) Kuras of Gaylord, Rula (Larry) Guyot of Evart, Karen (Joe) Peters of Vanderbilt; stepchildren, Robert (Dawn) Kucharek of Midland, Mark Kucharek of Houston, TX, Sandra (Gary) Metzger of Elmira, Judy (Dave) Holman of Naples, FL, Michelle (Gary) Walker of East Jordan; 26 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at 12:00 PM, from St. Mary Cathedral, Father John McCracken, officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Monday from 1-8 PM and at the church on Tuesday beginning at 11 AM. Mr. Jerry Ashley, Sr.
Mr. Jerry D. Ashley, Sr. age 64 of Lewiston died Sunday, February 5, 2006. Mr. Ashley was born in Detroit on August 25, 1941, and had lived in Lewiston since 1980. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a retiree of General Motors. Mr. Ashley is survived by his wife, Nancy; two children, Sherry Dawn King and Jerry D. Ashley Jr. both of Lewiston; granddaughter, Crystal Ashley; mother-in-law, Irene Covert; three step-grandchildren, Jimmie and Zak King and Michael Lamar; five brothers and one sister, Lee and Billy Ashley, Joyce Evans, Byron, Alvin and Bruce Ashley. Mrs. Dorothy E. Dearson
Dorothy E. Dearson, age 89 passed peacefully Wednesday, Feb 1, 2006 at her home in Lewiston, after a short illness. She was born in Highland Park on April 29, 1916, the daughter of Gregory and Emma Kalin. Dorothy had lived in Lewiston since 1976. She was very active in St. Francis Church and the Ladies Guild, the 50+ Club and the WOW’s Club. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Clarence and her brother Albert Kalin. Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held in the spring at St. Francis cemetery in Lewiston. Mr. Thomas J. Keefe
Thomas J. Keefe, 69, of Gaylord, died Monday, January 30, 2006 at home. He was born April 13, 1936 in Royal Oak to Thomas and Luella (Casey) Keefe. Tom served proudly in the United States Marine Corps. He worked many years at Tire Engineering Service in Hazel Park, where he was the manager when he retired in 1991. On October 15, 1961 he married
Patricia J. Rosenbach in Royal Oak, where they lived and raised their family. Tom loved northern Michigan and enjoyed the Gaylord area where they had property for several years. They made Gaylord their home in 1999. He loved spending time with his family and his dog, and he enjoyed boating and hunting. He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral Parish. Surviving is his wife, Patricia J. of Gaylord; his daughter, Noreen (Keith) Tverberg of Spruce; two sons, David Keefe of Gaylord and Bill (Diana) Keefe of Berkley; three grandchildren, Cara, Erin and Lily Keefe. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Jane Murphy and his brother Michael Keefe. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be on Wednesday from 1-8 pm, where the Rosary will be offered at 3pm. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00am Thursday from St. Mary Cathedral with Rev. John McCracken officiating. Visitation at the church will begin at 10:00am on Thursday. Mrs. Betty Ann Kuziel
Betty Ann Kuziel, 60, of Elmira, died Thursday, January 26, 2006 at Northern Michigan Hospital. She was born September 29, 1945 in Detroit, the daughter of Elbert and Bertha (Bell) Rushing. On March 23, 1962 Betty married
Mitchell F. Kuziel in Detroit. They lived in Detroit and in St. Clair before moving to the Gaylord area 10 years ago. Betty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Elmira. Surviving is her husband, Mitchell F. of Elmira; four sons, Michael (Angela) of Dearborn, Mark (AnnMarie) of Roseville, Matthew (Amanda) of Gaylord, Shane of Elmira; one sister, Linda (Joseph) Reilly; two brothers, Alfred (Eileen) Rushing and Donald (Elaine) Rushing. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, February 4, 2006 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Elmira. Mr. Richard “Dick” Paulis
Richard “Dick” Paulis, age 72 of Gaylord passed away peacefully at his home in Michaywe on Monday, January 30, 2006. Dick was born on March 18, 1933 in Akron, Ohio, and worked in sales for 45 years for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, most recently in Peoria, Illinois, in their truck tire division, retiring in 1999. On April 13, 1957, Dick married
Edith (Barry) in St. John Episcopal Church in Royal Oak, MI., and enjoyed 48 years together. Upon his retirement, they moved to Gaylord from Peoria Illinois in 2000. Dick was an avid skeet shooter, and was the Illinois state champion in his class. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, all the wildlife, photography, and especially enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters Laura (Chip) Hansen of East Jordan, and Lee (Randy) Grimes of Gladwin, grandsons Eric and Scott Hansen, and granddaughters Sarah and Anna Grimes. Dick is also survived by his brother Bill (Sally) Paulis of Jackson, and sisters Mary Ellen Schoenfelder of Banning, California, and Susan Paulis of Shelby Twp. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Elizabeth Paulis. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Charles Brink Rd., Pastor Mary McClure officiating. Mr. William Henry “Bill” Schwark
William Henry “Bill” Schwark, age 85 of Lewiston, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2006. He was born August 14, 1920 in Detroit. Bill lived in the Mt. Clemens area for many years and worked at Highland Park and Mt. Clemens Vinyl Ford plant, retiring in 1975 after 36 years. He was a US World War II Army veteran, and served in the 42nd Rainbow Division in Germany. Bill moved to Lewiston in 1975 and was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He took part in men’s fellowship and served as head usher at the church. He was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW of Lewiston. Bill was President of Little Bear Lake Association for nearly 10 years. He worked at Otsego Lake Service for 25 years, leaving there in 2001. He especially enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Bill was preceded in death by his daughter, Marlene Stark in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; three sons, Joe (Suzi) of Rockford, Greg of Atlanta, Ron (Beth) of Troy; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; son-in-law, Bud Stark of Kalkaska; brother, Gerald (Lois) Bailey of North Carolina and sister Lois (Andy) Wilds of Arizona.
