- Of Clio, age 94, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at the Frankenmuth Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be held 10:30AM Saturday, June 5, 1999 at the Whipple-O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio, Rev. Erwin Kostizen officiating with burial in Sunset Hills cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Social Services.
RUFF, Helen Marie
- Of Flint, age 100, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at her residence. Funeral Mass will be held 10AM Saturday, June 5, 1999 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. William Wegher officiating. Burial at New Calvary Catholic cemetery. A parish scripture service will be held 7PM Friday from the Floral Chapel of the Dodds Dumanois Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12-4 and 6-9PM Friday. Contributions may be made to St. Michael Church Memorial Fund. Marie was born in Standish, MI August 14, 1898 to Charles and Agnes Coggins. She lived in the Flint area most of her life. She married Alexander Ruff on August 7, 1923 and together they celebrated over 23 years of marriage. Marie was a devoted member of St. Michael Catholic Church, their church altar society, a minister of communion and was a member of the Order of Lay Carmelites. Mrs. Ruff taught school for the Flint Board of Education spanning her teaching career to many years. Marie enjoyed going to church activities and working on the Flint Journal crossword puzzles. She is survived by: 1 daughter, Mrs. Margaret A. Cook of Flint; 2 sons, Donald C. Ruff and wife Ann of Phoenix, AZ, Patrick J. Ruff and wife Gail of Clio; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 1 great- great grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander L. Ruff on Ocotber 16, 1946.
THOMAS, Mr. Calvin Earl
- Age 72, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at his residence. Funeral service 1PM Saturday, June 5, 1999 from the Greater Emmanuel Temple Apostolic Church, 1117 E. Genesee. Dist. Eld. Charles F. Byrd officiating. Interment River Rest cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 12:30PM Saturday. Mr. Thomas now lies in state in the Chapel of the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed after 12Noon today, where the family will receive friends from 6-7PM this evening. Mr. Calvin Earl Thomas was born November 4, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Ida Belle (Gibson) Thomas. He attended the Flint Public Schools. Mr. Thomas was baptized at the Greater Emmanuel Temple Apostolic Church. He was a talented artist, an avid reader of poetry, and the classics. Mr. Thomas was a former Senior Companion with the Genesee County Community Mental Health Services, and was also an Income Tax Preparer. He leaves to cherish his memory: stepdaughter, Myrtle Washington; grandchildren, Nikia and Johntza (Travis) Spiller; step grandchildren, Lisa Lawrence, Kevin and Jeff Washington; great grandchildren, LeAona Crosby and Quameisheon Spiller; sister, Shirley (Raymond) Wilson; brother, Wiley (Georgiana) Thomas, all of Flint; 9 nieces; 10 nephews; 2 aunts, Maleda Thomas of Pine Bluff, AR, and Tabitha Gibson of Flint; sister-in-law, Cassie Gunn of Seneca, SC; brother-in-law, Bernard Alexander of Flint; a host of other relatives and friends including special friends Bessie Short, Earl and Iverson Webb. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Thomas; son, Larry Williams; daughter, Yvonne Spiller; parents, Ralph and Ida Belle; 3 sisters, Bessie Christopher, Ralphene Collier, and Annie Jean Alexander; brother, John Thomas; loving companion, Rachel Holmes. The family would like to express special thanks to District Eld. Charles F. Byrd and the congregation of Greater Emmanuel Temple Apostolic Church.
TOLBERT, Ms. Kay Marie "Doogie"
- Age 42, died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Veterans Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Family hour 10:30AM Saturday, June 5, 1999 from the House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church, 1851 W. Carpenter Rd., with funeral service commencing immediately at 11AM. Eld. Kenneth Stewart officiating. Interment Gracelawn Community cemetery, 5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30AM Saturday. Ms. Tolbert now lies in state in the Chapel of the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. There will be no public viewing. Ms. Kay Marie "Doogie" Tolbert was born June 21, 1952 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Ms. Wanda "Jeanny" Kendrick and Mr. Melvin Tolbert, and had been a lifelong resident of Flint. She was a graduate of Flint Northern High School. Ms. Tolbert was an Honorably Discharged Veteran of the U.S. Army, where she was a Communication Center Specialist. She loved softball (back catcher), traveling, and had lived in many different states. She leaves to cherish her memory; father, Melvin Tolbert of Rochester, NY; 4 sisters, Donna Muse of Youngston, OH, Robin Robinson, of Rochester, NY, Sandra Page and Pamela Tolbert, both of Flint; 2 brothers, Paul Fields of Berkley, CA, and Na'eem Shaheed of Youngstown, OH; 5 nieces, Ronna (Dwight) and Nia Nolan, both of Dayton, OH, Kamil Muse and Sayja Page, both of Youngstown, OH, and Sade Kemp of Flint; 4 nephews, Brad and Kamal Muse, Branndon Page, all of Youngstown, OH, and Dion Tolbert, of Ionia, MI; 2 aunts, Frances Holliday and Verdella Skelton, both of Flint; uncle, Eugene (Rose) Kendrick; 6 special cousins, Kendrea, Theo, Alaia, Gene-O, Jeannea, and J'Tino Zamora, all of Flint; a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Frances Sibley, Willy Robison and Mace Wiley. Ms. Tolbert was preceded in death by her mother, Wanda "Jeanny" Tolbert; grandparents, Eugene and Pearl Kendrick; cousins, Peggy Kendrick, Kenneth Skelton, and Joseph Gant. COOPER, Mina E.
- Of Birch Run, passed away Thursday, June 3, 1999 at Oakwood Hospital, Dearborn, MI, age 68. Mina Elenore Wilkinson was born November 14, 1930, to Harry and Margaret Wilkinson in Midland. She was married to Donald Cooper on September 26, 1970 at Bridgeport Community Church. He passed away December 18, 1990. She was a member of Birch Run United Methodist Church. Surviving are: 2 sons and 5 daughters, Kenneth (Kay) Burton of Oil City, MI, Pamela (Rocco) Iafrate of Midland, Debra (Joseph) Noffke of Melvindale, Terry Dubay of Clover, South Carolina, Alfred (Tarry) Burton of Midland, Donna (Craig) Langmaid of Bridgeport, Sheryl (Erik) Morse of Birch Run; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and step- grandchildren; 7 stepchildren; 3 sons and 4 daughters, Dennis and Gloria Cooper of Birch Run, Donald G. Cooper of Reese, Tooney and Terry of Frankenmuth, Debbie and Herran Chapman of Clio, Shelly Check of Mt. Morris, Martin Cooper of Birth Run; 3 sisters and 3 brothers, Gladys Devericks of Hope, Beulah Sasse of Midland, Leona and Joe Dice of Riverdale, Kenneth and Donna Wilkinson of Midland, Wesley and Maggie Wilkinson of Ednore, Roy and Arlene Wilkinson of Midland; special friends, Donald Nichols and Clint and Wanda Peters, all of Clio, besides her husband, her parents, her brother Blyth Martin predeceased her. MURPHY, Thomas E.
- Of Davison and Lupton, age 65, died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at Genesys Health Park. A Funeral Liturgy will be held 11AM Monday, June 7, 1999 at the Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Rev. Fr. Andrew Czajkowski officiating. Burial in Thetford Township cemetery. Mr. Murphy will lie in state at the funeral home, where the family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 6-9PM Saturday and Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Thomas was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 13, 1934, the son of Austin and Estelle Murphy. He married Lorane Rae in November of 1971 in Davison. She preceded him in death on September 25, 1997. Mr. Murphy was a member of the Davison Eagles F.O.E #3589 and Hale Eagles F.O.E #4217. He was an electrical contractor for many years in Genesee County and also previous owner and operator of Buell Lake Patio and Pub in Genesee County. He is survived by: children, Vicki (Chris) Conde of Palmetto, FL, Tom (Mary) Murphy of Tawas, MI, Dan (Kim) Murphy of East Tawas, MI; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (June) Murphy; sister, Patricia Diskin; sister-in-law, Sharon Murphy; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his mother Estelle, father, Austin and stepmother, Frances and sister, Mary Lou, brothers, Michael and William.

KNIGHT, Sharon J.
- Of Mt. Morris, age 54, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999 at her residence. Memorial service will be held at 6PM Monday, June 7, 1999 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. Cremation has taken place. Those desiring may make contributions to the family. Visitation 6- 8PM Sunday and 4PM until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Knight was born in Pontiac, Michigan on June 16, 1944. Surviving are her children, Jim and wife Laurie Ferris of Holly, Barb Haycraft of Holly, Mary Ferris of Swartz Creek, Shari and husband Phillip Gomez of Norfolk, Virginia, Charles and wife April Ferris of El Monte, California; 8 grandchildren, Margaret, Amanda, Danielle, Alex, Grace, Andrea, Meagan and Sara. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerry, on December 9, 1997.

Visitation 6-9PM Saturday, 2-4 and 6-9PM Sunday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A memorial service, by the Order of the Amaranth, will be held at 7PM Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Clum will be at the church from 10AM Monday until the time of the service.
