Age 51, passed away at his residence. He was born on January 14, 1949 in Ypsilanti, MI, the son of Emil and Josephine (Green) Colby. He was a graduate of Ypsilanti High School.Mr. Colby was employed by General Motors for 30 years, retiring in June of 1999. Survivors include four sisters, Wanda (Richard) Conner of Grass Lake, Nancy Johnson of Belleville, Violet Murray of Gregory and Edith (Rick) Christensen of Ypsilanti; one brother, Fred Colby of Ypsilanti; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. The memorial service will be 1 pm Monday March 13, 2000 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Eugene Frame officiating. Burial will follow in London cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Huron Valley. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 12 Noon until the timeof service Monday.
Kapp, Leon Martin, Ann Arbor, MI
Age 64, died Thursday, March 9, 2000 at Arbor Hospice Residence. Leon had retired after 34 years as a Grinder for Associated Spring Co. Leon served in the Navy from 1954 to 1957 on a destroyer. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Leon is survived by his son, Jeff (Kary) Kapp; his sister, Betty (Karl) Nonnenmacher; aunt, Katherine Kapp; two nephews, Steve and John Nonnenmacher; and a niece, Susan (Tim) Collins. He is also survived by several cousins. Visitation will be held at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth, on Sunday, March 12, 2000 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. where funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. Interment in Washtenong cemetery. Johnson, Pauline E., Saline, MI

Age 89, died March 6, 2000 at Saline Evangelical Home. She was born on December 12, 1910 in Freedom Twp, MI, the daughter of Samuel C. and Hermina B. (Schnirring) Hieber. On July 9, 1943 she married Walter Frank Johnson; he preceded her in death on March 7, 1963. She is survived by her three nieces, Mrs. Shirley (Richard) Shanahan, Mrs. Doris Jedele and Mrs. Luinda (Michael) Smith; and one nephew, Fred (Joddy) Hieber. Also surviving are Robert and Marilyn Rayer, her special friends. Graveside services 1 p.m. Saturday, March 11 at the Bethel United Church of Christ cemetery. Arrangements by Muehlig Funeral Chapel.
Ferguson, LaVerna L. Schultz,
Age 84, died on Ash Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at Riverview of Ann Arbor, where she resided for the past two and a half years. LaVerna was born May 27, 1915 in Schleswig, Iowa, to Martin Johann August Schultz and Emma Lissetta Schwartz Schultz. She was baptized on July 18, 1915 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 24, 1929 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, graduated from Schleswig High School in 1932 and moved to Ann Arbor c. 1937 to take a job as a housekeeper/nanny for a local family. She met her husband Elmer when he delivered groceries to the home where she worked. They were married December 27, 1941. While Elmer served overseas in WWII,LaVerna worked worked at King Sealey in Ann Arbor and then at the bomber plant in Detroit. She served as Commander of the Washtenaw County Chapter of Disabled American Veteran's Auxiliary after WWII. She was employed by the University of Michigan Dental School and retired in the early 1980s. LaVerna was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for over 53 years, transferring to Our Savior Lutheran Church of Chelsea in 1994. She was a true helpmate to Elmer through 56 years of marriage and a loving mother to her three children. LaVerna was well liked, having a sweet and unassuming disposition. In her more active years, she enjoyed attending church, family get-togethers, travel, reading, gardening, crocheting and many other craft projects. LaVerna was preceded in death by her sister, Larene Schultz; her parents and husband. She is survived by her sister, Joyce Richardson (Lee) of Moscow, ID; her children, The Rev. Jack D. Ferguson (Kathryn) Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Colby, KS and Chaplain (Colonel) USAR (Ret.), Janet E. Wain (Richard) of Bicester, England, Eileen Ferguson (Dennis Johnson) of Ann Arbor; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several sisters and brothers-in-law; cousins; nieces and nephews; and friends. Perhaps her greatest contribution and most important gift was that of being a witness to others of her deeply committed faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Visitation will be Sunday, March 12 from 3-5 p.m. and7-9 p.m. at Muehlig Funeral Chapel,E. William and 4th Ave., Ann Arbor. Funeral service will be held Monday, March 13, 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Chelsea with 2 p.m. graveside service at the Arborcrest Memorial Park, Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1515 S. Main Street, Chelsea, Michigan 48118. The family would like to thank the staff of Riverview for their loving care and concern for our mother during the last years of her life.
Rogers, Ora E., Ypsilanti, MI
Age 95, died peacefully on Saturday March 11, 2000 at the Gilbert Residence. She was born December 15, 1904 in White Oak, Missouri, the daughter of John and Ella (Hester) Hoxsworth. She married James C. Rogers and he preceded her in death in July of 1962. Mrs. Rogers had been an Ypsilanti area resident for over 50 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Ypsilanti and also a member of the Ypsilanti Twp Senior Citizens 'Lively Travelers'. She had retired from the Kroger Co. where she was employed for many years as a meat wrapper. One of her greatest joys was when she was named runner-up for the Senior Queen during the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival Senior Queen pageant in 1986. She is lovingly survived by her five children, Dewey (Lorene) Rogers of Missouri, Carol Rogers of Ypsilanti, Bob (Madeline) Rogers of Florida, Betty (Wayne) Cockburn of Alabama and Patricia (Phil) Richards of Belleville, MI; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one brother, Paul Hoxsworth of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by son, Floyd 'Bo' Rogers in February 1999 and daughter, Narvis Fairless in July of 1999; a grandson; four brothers and three sisters. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at the JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, GEER-LOGAN CHAPEL with Rev. James Southward of Graceway Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland cemetery. Memorials may be made to Child and Family Services. Age 78, died Saturday, March 11, 2000 at the JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, FL. Born in West Palm Beach, FL, she was the daughter of Rayford and Eunice Gainer Seyle, a pioneer family who came to West Palm Beach in 1900. Mary Lou was a graduate of Palm Beach High School, class of 1940 and a long time member of Gardens Presbyterian Church in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, the West Palm Beach Genealogical Society and Lake Worth Pioneers Association. She resided in Michigan for 32 years, returning to the Palm Beach area from Ypsilanti, MI in 1974. She is survived by a son, Arthur W. Baker Jr. of Galletin Gateway, MT; a daughter, Mary Alice Idrissi of Lake Worth, FL; two sisters, Alice Rayside and Patricia Seyle Adair, both of West Palm Beach, FL. Additional survivors include three grandsons, Timothy Baker of Saline, MI, Todd Baker of Clinton, MI and Ahmend J. Idrissi of Lake Worth, FL; a granddaughter, Laila Idrissi Lynch of Madison, WI; five great-grandchildren, Katlyn Marie Lynch, Luke Baker, Tyler Baker, Leisel Baker, and Brooke Baker; and a devoted daughter-in-law, Carole F. Baker of Saline. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15 at Quattlebaum-Holleman-Burse Funeral Home, 1201 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL, with Rev. Lynn Downing, Pastor of Lake Osborne Presbyterian Church, Lake Worth, FL officiating. Interment will be in the Seyle family plot at the Ochwilla cemetery, Hawthorne, FL at a later date. Capps, David Bridgman, Ann Arbor, MI
David Bridgman Capps, a research chemist and photographer, died of brain cancer at Arbor Hospice on March 11, 2000. He was born January 25, 1925, in Jacksonville, IL, and grew up in Berea, KY. He graduated from Illinois College in 1948, then received a Ph.D. in chemistry from University of Nebraska. After a 30-year career with Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert, he had retired as a Senior Research Scientist in 1986. In the 1960s, he taught himself the art of photography and his work was exhibited in many area galleries and at the Ann Arbor Summer Street Art Fair. He enjoyed travel, a summer cabin on the Old Mission Peninsula, and music of all kinds, especially Jazz. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wanda; his three daughters and their husbands, Martha and Gregg Warshaw, Elizabeth and Peter Welsh, Susan and Nicolas Shelly; six grandchildren;and two brothers. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Arbor Hospice (2366 Oak Valley, Ann Arbor 48103) or The Ark (316 South Main Street, Ann Arbor 48104), where many of his photographs of musicians are displayed. Walz, Lyle A., Grass Lake, MI
Age 88, died Monday, March 13, 2000 at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born on July 12, 1911, the son of Arthur and Anna (Runciman) Walz. Lyle had been a farmer all his life.He attended the Waterloo United Methodist Church, was a member of Waterloo Senior Citizens, and played alto horn in the Waterloo Band. He loved to play Euchre. On November 15, 1936, he married Jennie Scripter in Highland, MI, and she preceded him in death on January 16, 1998.Survivors include one son, Laverne (Patricia) Walz of Grass Lake; two daughters, Ruth DeNies of Jackson, Donna (Wm. James) Dault of Grass Lake; one sister, Doris (Kenneth Bill) Stanfield of Stockbridge; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Frances in 1975; and a grandson, Larry Walz. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 15 at the COLE FUNERAL CHAPEL, Chelsea, with burial to follow at Mt. Hope cemetery, Waterloo. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8.
