Smith, Russell C. (Smitty), Manchester, MI
Age 82, passed away on Friday, November 5, 1999. Smitty was born March 24, 1917 in Lake Linden, MI to Thomas and Rose (Forget) Smith. He graduated from Lake Linden High School and had served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 to 1940. In 1941 he married Mildred Eldora Shupe, who passed away in 1985 from cancer. He served in the Merchant Marines in World War II. Following the war he was a factory worker and union organizer before becoming a journeyman electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 252 out of Ann Arbor. He and his wife were 4-H Club leaders and softball coaches while their children were growing up. He was known in the Manchester area for giving mechanical and electrical help and other assistance to friends, neighbors, and complete strangers who would then become good friends. After retiring from the electrical trade, he continued to help anyone in need. He delivered Meals on Wheels as a volunteer for Manchester Family Services and was a trustee for the Manchester Township Library from 1989 to 1996. He was an avid reader, Civil War buff, and friend of animals. He is survived by a brother, Robert of Okemos, MI; two daughters, April Smith of Manchester, MI and Vickie Smith of Ann Arbor; Vickie's husband, Frank Lamitola; a son, Russell C. (Skip) Smith of Montpelier, VT, Skip's wife, Barbara and their daughters, Katie and Megan. Memorial Gathering will be held Saturday, November 13 at 2 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 203 Adrian Street, Manchester. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Manchester Family Services or to Manchester Township Library. Cremation will be arranged by Couture-Handler Funeral Home of Clinton. His ashes will be buried at Oak Grove cemetery in Manchester.

Shaffer, Jack W., Willis, MI
Age 69, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 1999 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital following a prolonged illness. He was born on January 20, 1930 in Williamsport, PA, the son of Walter and Alice (Livermore) Shaffer. On May 25, 1952, he was married to Joan Howell in Willis, MI and she survives. Jack worked for the National Guard Armory in Ypsilanti for 35 years and he served in the National Guard as a Master Sergeant with 156th Signal Battalion. He enjoyed woodworking and charter fishing on his boat, The Semaphore. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and good friend to all who knew him. In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Leslie (Dennis) Patrick of Ashley, MI; two sons, Eric (Cathy) Shaffer of Clinton and Kurt Shaffer of Willis; five grandchildren, Michael and Adam Patrick and Randi Marie, David and Kelley Shaffer; one sister, Mrs. Neva Middleton of Mancelon, MI; two special friends, Roger and Sylvia; and his beloved dog Zoe. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bruce Alan; and his brother, Arlan Dude Shaffer. Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 15 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel with Rev. Walter B. Fenton of the Lincoln Community United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Alban cemetery. Contributions may be made to Lincoln Community United Methodist Church. Age 52, died suddenly November 10, 1999 at home. He was born March 8, 1947 in Ypsilanti to James & Dolores (Simon) Applegate. Survivors include two daughters, Angela and Cheryl Applegate of Dundee, MI; five grandchildren; a brother, David Applegate of Whitmore Lake; a sister, Barbara (Dennis) Hallock of Milan; stepfather, Frank Flinn of Milan; stepbrothers, Frank and Duane Flinn; and one stepsister, Rose White. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Christina Marie; his father James; and mother, Dolores Flinn (who died this past Friday.) A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Brown, Anna Bertha, Ypsilanti, MI
Age 76, passed away November 10, 1999 in her home. She was born in Florence, Alabama on June 14, 1923, daughter of Florence V. (Chitwood) Nails. She was married to Henry Brown and he preceded her in death. Survivors include daughter, Betty Jean Anderson; grandsons, Darryl E. Anderson and Gary D. Anderson; five great grandchildren. Pesek, Charles G., Ann Arbor, MI
Age 78, died Friday, November 12, 1999 at his home. He was born March 12, 1921 in Charlevoix, MI. The son of John and Josephine (Kuhl) Pesak. He was united in marriage to Michelle Blanche Norris in 1946 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Charles was a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, and was also a member of the V.F.W. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a B.S. in Biology and also a teaching certificate. Charles retired from Michigan Bell in 1986, and after retirement volunteered installing Lifeline for the Elderly. He was a member of Michigan Bell Pioneers and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Charles ushered at the U of M Stadium for over 30 years in section 42. He is survived by his wife Michelle of 52 years; children, Gayle M. Pesek of Ann Arbor, Jayne N. (Jeffrey) Bower of Ann Arbor, and Patty P. (David) Jensen of Long Beach, CA; grandchildren, Heather Wesolowski and Travis Wesolowski of Jackson, MI, Benjamin Charles Bower and Jonathan Bower of Ann Arbor and Jakob Jensen of Long Beach, CA; sisters Mary Reynolds and Billie Pesek, and dear friend Daniel Wesolowski. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters. The Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, November 16, 1999 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Fr. Jerry Vincke officiating. Interment will be in St. Thomas cemetery. Visitation will be held at MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL on Monday from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church. Nagel, Margaret June (Houk), Saline, MI
Age 82, a native of Allen County, IN and a former beautician and homemaker, died Thursday, November 11, 1999 in Saline, MI. A lifetime resident of Fort Wayne, she was a Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of Fort Wayne and she was active as a volunteer and docent for the Settler's Club of Fort Wayne Historical Society. A member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, she was an accomplished pianist who loved music. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia L. Butcko of Saline, MI, and Judith Knapp of Hammond, IN; brother, Willard Houk of New Haven, IN; and granddaughter, Kathryn Knapp of Hammond, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter F. Nagel, Jr. in 1987. Memorial Service by the Daughters of the American Revolution will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with services following at D.O. Wurster, John H., South Glens Falls, NY
John Henby Wurster of South Glens Falls, NY died Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at the Glens Falls Hospital. Born in Ann Arbor on April 13, 1916,he was the son of C. Victor and Anna Henby Wurster. John was a graduate of the University of Michigan, with degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering. He had retired from General Electric in Hudson Falls, NY after 46 years of service. Survivors include his wife of 57 years. Elizabeth Hurley Wurster of South Glens Falls; one daughter, Kathryn Wurster of Hampton, VA; one brother, Carl V. (Virginia) Wurster of Ann Arbor; one sister, Elizabeth C. Wurster of Ann Arbor; and many nieces and nephews. Sager, Mabel, Ann Arbor, MI
Mabel died peacefully on November 10, 1999, at Alterra Clare Bridge of Ann Arbor. She was 93 years old. She was born July 16, 1906 to William and Anna Koch Seyfried on a farm near Dexter. Her husband of 58 years, Herbert F. Sager preceded her in death on June 7, 1992. Survivors include 3 sons; David (Karyn) and their children, Joshua and Heather; son Dudley, and son Douglas and his children, Todd, Robin (Mitch) and their son, Maxwell Panzer; brother Neil Seyfried; nephew Jan (Sue) Seyfried and their daughter Lisa (Michael). She was preceded in death by her brother Grover. Mabel attended Old Ann Arbor High School and loved to play on the basketball team, her favorite sport. She enjoyed high school and her many lasting friendships. She began her retail career after high school at Mack and Co., a fine department store on Main St. near Liberty St. She learned all facets of retail from Mr. Mack, a pioneer of his time. She also worked at Arnold's Jewelry Store and for Gurnsey Collins at the Collins Shop at State and Liberty. Her years at Jacobson's though, were her favorite. She modeled, trimmed windows, and worked in sales. The Jacobson family would take Mabel home to Jackson so she could trim the Jackson store over the weekend. She lived in a rooming house at the corner of Thompson and Williams. During these years she met her future husband, Herbert, a young aspiring merchant on Main St. (Fiegel's). While courting, they would attend the Big Band dances at Walled Lake Casino and Devil's Lake. They enjoyed Wayne King, Jimmy Dorsey, and other big dance bands. They loved to attend The military ball held at the U of M Union Ballroom. Mabel and Herb were married April 4, 1934 in Angola, Indiana. They eloped to avoid all the hoopla in Ann Arbor. Son, David was born in 1939 and twin sons Douglas and Dudley were born in 1942, all while living in a flat on Second St. Mabel was a wonderful mother and wife. She mused that she ran a taxi service, transporting all the neighborhood kids to school and functions. Mabel loved to help out at school when her children were young and was there for every function. Every December she would host a train trip to Detroit, spending the entire day at Hudson's. As her children grew up, Mabel began to volunteer at U of M Mott's Hospital. She was a founding member of the volunteers who established the gift shop of which the proceeds were to help less fortunate young patients. Mabel volunteered over 7,000 hours. She was proud of her work with the children. She loved to cook, read, and work in the garden, and was an avid member of the Garden Club at the Women's City Club. She loved to travel, especially to the East and Green Mountain of Vermont, and White Mountains of New Hampshire. She enjoyed her travels to England and several trips to Bermuda. She loved life and was always concerned about others, willing to lend a hand if needed. Mabel loved her neighbors, Kenneth and Ann Sharpe and son, Timmy, and Mieko West. These were special friends that Mabel cherished and held dear to her. We thank Ken, Ann, and Mieko for their heartfelt assistance in caring for her. The family also would like to thank the entire staff of Alterra Clare Bridge Assisted Living for their wonderful care. They treated Mabel with kindness, compassion, and were always concerned for her well-being. Their efforts were above and beyond the call. We thank Individualized Hospice and their care. Mabel has left us all a wonderful and beautiful legacy. She will never be forgotten. Mabel has been cremated at her request. Ruhlig, Martin Edward, Dexter, MI
Age 85, died Friday, November 12, 1999. Martin was the son of the late Ernest & Henrietta (Strohschein) Ruhlig. In 1968 he bought the Emil Ruhlig farm and continued truck farming until his health began to fail. He was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Chelsea. Survivors include his wife, Violet; three sons, Martin Jr. (Shirley) of Dexter, James (Charlene) of Waterford, and Ernest (Mary) of Quincy; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral on Tuesday, November 16, 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Chelsea with burial at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock.
