Caputo, George Ernest,
George Caputo, an assistant professor at Eastern Michigan University from 1965 to 1985, died on Sunday, October 31. He was 81 years old. He is remembered first and foremost as a loving father and faithful Christian throughout his life. George was born in Washington, Pennsylvania, where he was active in the YMCA. It was there that he met his wife, Genevieve Marble (the director's daughter). George graduated from Washington High School as valedictorian in 1937. After earning a bachelor's degree from Washington and Jefferson College, George married Genevieve in 1942. He began graduate studies at Springfield College, then enlisted in the United States Army and served in the European theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. His career as a teacher was a testimony to his kind and patient character. Both at Turtle Creek (Pennsylvania) High School and at Goodwill Industries, George dedicated himself to helping and inspiring young people, particularly the disadvantaged. In 1965, George became an assistant professor in the Special Education Department at Eastern Michigan University. He and his wife by that time had a family of five children: Brady William; George Craig; Judith Ann; Terry Ernest; and Robert Kent. Upon the family's arrival in Ypsilanti, George and Genevieve became active as congregants and choir members at First United Methodist Church. Their beautiful voices were a rich addition to the choir for many years. Truly, the profound influence George has had on his friends, students, and children, could never be adequately described. The milestones in his life are only a glimpse of his heart and soul, his character. George was unwavering in his love of God. He was unwavering in his commitment to his wife and children. Those who survive him are his sister, Florence; daughter Judy; sons, Terry and Kent; and five (soon to be six) grandchildren. It is these people in particular to whom George has given a joyous legacy of faith.
