Eberts, Richard Warren, Belleville, MI

Age 83, longtime owner and bartender of the Orange Lantern in Belleville, MI died Friday after a lengthy illness. Dick was a colorful character and was much loved by his family and the patrons of the bar where he worked diligently since 1933. He was born on January 18, 1917 to Wilfred and Anna Eberts in Ecorse, MI, the youngest of five children. His mother died when he was four years old and he was raised primarily by his aunt Grace, his father and siblings. Throughout the prohibition era, young Dick worked diligently in the family's adult beverage importation and distribution business. His comment about the era was - I don't think I ever slept in the later 1920s and early 30s. Following the end of prohibition, Dick's father and brother, Red Eberts, were granted one of the first liquor licenses in the state of Michigan, employing it first at the Cameo Gardens bar which was at the corner of Belleville and Ecorse roads in Belleville, and then, starting in 1933, at the Orange Lantern of Michigan Avenue just outside of Ypsilanti. Dick married Isabelle Brinza in 1938. She preceded him in death in 1985. He was a devoted and loyal husband. During the early years of their marriage, Dick was called to duty in the service of his country. He was a drill instructor for the U.S. Army in Paso Rubles, CA. By Dick's own request he was sent to Europe courtesy of his Uncle Sam, entering the continent by way of Omaha Beach, France in June of 1944. He fought bravely through Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge, earning the Bronze Star, among other medals, ribbons and citations. He was among the first group of soldiers to liberate the concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany. Famous quote from that era, upon his insistence to a doctor to be discharged from a military hospital in Germany, I do not have a head wound, I was hit by a truck. Following World War II, he returned to his family, his wife and the Orange Lantern. Dick became a teetotaler in 1946, but pulled the taps and mixed the drinks until he took sick on March 5, 1999. He never retired, preferring the company of his friends and customers. The Orange Lantern is like a piece of living history, but its chief story teller is now gone. Although he and Isabelle had no children and he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Red, Jerry and Robert Beester, and his sister, Annabelle, Dick leaves behind a large and loving family. He is survived most directly by his nephews, James Bud Fahndrich and Robert Eberts Jr.; nieces, Gloria Mott, Joyce Parkinson and JoAn Beal; special friend, Waneta (Hilde) Odegard, the Brinza family, and a multitude of great, great great and great great great nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 19, 1999 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, where Dick was a parishioner. Burial will follow in St. John cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice. Envelopes are available at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE, Moore Memorial Chapel, where friends may call 6-9 p.m. Sunday, and 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday. There will be a scripture vigil 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
