BAUMGARTNER, Osta A.

Osta's life began July 11, 1901 in Levering, Michigan. She formerly worked for the Muskegon Public Schools and had resided in this area for over thirty years. Osta enjoyed doing things for her family and loved cooking, knitting, and crocheting. Her family includes a son and his wife, Charles and Phyllis Baumgartner of Fort Smith, AR; a daughter-in-law, Robin Baumgartner of Portage; two brothers and one sister, Leonard Niswander of Petosky, MI, George Niswander of Traverse City, MI, and Naomi Grams of Apache Junction, AZ; five grandchildren and their spouses, Judy and Jim Foster, Karen and Don Doolittle, Tom and Karen Baumgartner, Tim and Ann Baumgartner, and Todd and Brenda Baumgartner; and nine great-grandchildren. Osta died Monday, September 22, 1997 in Borgess Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. Baumgartner in 1984; her parents, Joseph and Blanche (Page) Niswander; and a son, Henry "Hank" Baumgartner in 1996. Friends may visit with her family 6-8 PM Tuesday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, Lovers Lane at Milham, where a Celebration of Life service will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday with Rev. Kenneth McCaw speaking. Burial will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

BOYNTON, Cyretta M. "Rita"

Rita's life began August 5, 1902 in Bay City, MI, the daughter of Karl and Anna Gunther. Her husband, WMU Professor and Retired Lt. Colonel James W. Boynton, preceded in her in death in 1975.Rita was a dear wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family includes four children and their families, William and Katie Boynton of Santa Ana, CA, Alvin and Mary Reinke of Essexville, MI, and their children Rita, Gloria, Rosemary, Tom, Bill and Kathy, Walter and Ann Redmond of Portage, MI, and their children Mike, Molly, Pat, Tim, Dan, Clancy, Kelly and Kathy, and Thomas and Jan Boynton of Big Rapids, MI, and their children Sarah and Jessica. Rita also has 23 great-grandchildren. Rita died Tuesday, September 16, 1997 and is now home with her Creator/Redeemer. She is confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with her LORD. Friends may visit with her family 6-8 PM Friday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, Lovers Lane at Milham, where a Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 Saturday with her grandson, Kelly Redmond, speaking and reciting scripture from I Thessalonians 4:13-18. Burial will follow in Hillside cemetery, Plainwell. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bible Radio Program.

BOUCH, Evelyn I.

Evelyn's life began July 23, 1908 in South Bend, IN. Later she moved to the Plainwell/Otsego area where she has resided for over 25 years. Members of Evelyn's family include her children Shirley and Philip Bowe of Otsego, Richard and Kris Kimble of Delton as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Helen Ross, a son Donald Kimble and brothers Arthur, Clifford, Henry, and Chester Ross. Evelyn died Saturday morning at Life Care Center in Plainwell where she has been a patient for almost 15 years. Friends may spend time with Evelyn's family this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the chapel Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Evelyn will be buried on the family plot at Mt. Home cemetery in Otsego.

CANCE, Jeanne M.

Jeanne's life began November 21, 1916 in Allegan the daughter of Eugene and Mary (Irwin) Nash. Later she moved with her family to Bravo where she grew up. After graduating from high school she moved to Kalamazoo to attend the nursing school at the Kalamazoo State Hospital. Jeanne worked there as a nurse until her marriage to Edmond L. Cance on May 28, 1940. Later on Jeanne and Ed moved to Plainwell where they raised three children, William Cance and his wife Dawn of Beavercreek, OH, Barbara Hansen and her husband Timothy of Chicago, IL, and James Cance and his wife Karen of Plainwell. While their family was young they were active at the First United Methodist Church of Plainwell. Later on in their lives Jeanne and Ed moved to Bronson Place. While living there they developed special friendships with many of the residents and staff members. Ed died on June 17, 1994. In addition to her children other members of Jeanne's family include her 5 grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Jeanne died Tuesday September 16, 1997 at Bronson Place Care Center. Friends may spend time with her family Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel. A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at Oakwood cemetery Friday at 10 a.m. Rev. Charles Grauer speaking. Jeanne will then be buried next to her husband. Friends may make donations in her memory to Friends of Bronson Place Endowment Fund.

CHAPMAN, Mrs. Vivian M.

Vivian's life began July 26, 1914 in Bluffton, Indiana, and she had been a resident of this area most of her life. Vivian enjoyed camping with her husband in their motor home and also liked to crochet, cook and spend time in her garden. She loved children; her family remembers her welcoming each new grandchild as a special part of their family. Vivian's family includes her 4 children and their spouses, Patsy and Gerald Wilson of Climax, Leon and Maryalice Chapman, Robert and Barbara Chapman, Russell and Jan Chapman all of Plainwell, a brother and 2 sisters and their spouses, Russell and Beatrice Kinsey of Kalamazoo, Trilby and Leonard Irwin of Middleville, Chloe and Charles Martin of Vermontville, 14 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Ruby Kinsey and many nieces and nephews. Vivian died Wednesday September 10, 1997 in Kalamazoo and was preceded in death by her husband Homer in 1986, by her brothers, Lloyd, Charles, Donald and Robert Kinsey, a sister Margaret Cave and her parents, Frank and Esther Kinsey. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, today 6-8 PM and Friday 2-4 & 6-8 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, 11 AM, Rev. Robert Rushing speaking. Burial will follow in the family plot in Prairie Home cemetery, Richland. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

CLEARWATERS, Nicholas Russ

Nick was born June 20, 1980 to Perry and Lydia (Fitzell) Clearwaters. He was a lifelong resident of Richland and attended Gull Lake Community Schools where he currently was a senior. He participated in ROSC and AYSO for several years. Nick had a real love for music and nature. He was an avid fisherman and had won several master angler awards. His family recalls that he had a wonderful sense of humor. In addition to his parents other members of Nick's family include his younger brother Andy, paternal grandparents Lloyd and Geraldine Clearwaters of Lawton, maternal grandparents James and Beverly Fitzell of Plainwell as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Nick died unexpectedly Saturday night as a result of an automobile accident near Gull Lake. Nick has been cremated. Friends may spend time with his family this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel where an informal Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday at 5 p.m. Friends of Nick are encouraged to make a memorial donation to the Kalamazoo Nature Center where Nick worked. Friends are also encouraged to share a memory of Nick with his family at the funeral home or online at www.rdmg.com. Nick's family would like everyone to know that they loved him very much and he will always be in their hearts forever.

COOK, Ray G.

Ray's life began January 1, 1931 in Kalamazoo, and he had been a resident of this area most of his life. Ray served his country as a radio operator in the Army during the Korean War. In his younger years he raced motorcycles and was a member of the American Motor Cycle Association. He worked for RCA as a supervisor for 15 years and most recently had worked for Simpson Paper retiring in 1993. Ray's wife of 42 years Eva, whom he married on Christmas Day, remembers him as a loving husband and grandfather. His family besides his wife includes 4 children and their spouses, Kevin Cook of Plainwell, Kathy Culver of Portage, Karen and Joe Finchum of Jacksonville, Florida, Jean and Ken Stahl of St. Charles, Michigan, 2 sisters and a brother, Lena Bell Cray, Clarence Cook Jr., both of Kalamazoo and Donna Rauch of White Cloud, MI, 5 grandchildren, Lisa and Lance Culver, Kenny and Amanda Stahl, and Heather Finchum, 2 sisters-in-law, Jean Cook of Kalamazoo and Kay Swisher of Hartford, several nieces and nephews. Ray died suddenly Friday September 12, 1997 in Plainwell and was preceded in death by his brother Amos Cook, parents, Clarence and Edrie Cook and 2 brothers-in-law Earl Cray and Floyd Swisher. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, Sunday and Monday 5-7 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday 11 AM. Cremation will follow with interment in Ft. Custer National cemetery.

DODSON, Mrs. Victoria

Victoria's life began May 28, 1926 in Black Rock, Arkansas. She was a loving mother and grandmother and her family includes her children and their spouses, Linda and Verne Sisco of Lansing, Howard and Lola Moss of Kalamazoo, Darlene Haughton of Lansing, Dawn Alexander of Lansing, Fredy Moss of Lapeer, Michigan, Janet martin of Lansing, brothers and sisters, Olia Dodson, Steven and Ruth Dodson, Mary Rossetter and Alvin and Susan Dodson, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Victoria died Monday September 15, 1997 in Lansing and was preceded in death by her sons, Ernest and Kenneth Moss and by a brother Robert Dodson. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held, 1:30 PM Friday, burial will follow in Hillside cemetery, Plainwell.

GURD, Mr. Royce

Royce's life began February 13, 1922 in Mancelona, MI. When he was a boy he moved with his family to the Orangeville area. He served his country in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. Royce was a farmer most of his life. From 1966 to 1981 he lived in Alaska before returning to Orangeville. Royce's family recalls that he was an avid hunter and fisherman who was also great at telling all kinds of stories. Members of his family include his children Richard Gurd and his wife Marilew of Delton, Sandra Norris also of Delton and James M. Gurd of Bradenton, FL, 4 grandchildren 2 great-grandchildren sister Betty Killick and her husband Robert of Plainwell, brothers Harold "Spike" and his wife Maxine Gurd of Cedar Creek, Ray and his wife Ada Gurd of Cooper Twp., Keith and his wife Brena Gurd of Orangeville as well as several nieces and nephews. Two brothers Fritz and Robert Gurd preceded Royce in death. Royce died Monday September 15, 1997 at Plainwell Pines Nursing Home. A graveside service to celebrate Royce's life will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Ft. Custer National cemetery with military committal honors provided by the Ft. Custer Honor Guard. Arrangements by Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel.

HAMILTON, James Theo

Theo's life began February 15, 1925 in Moulton, AL. He was a Paper Tester for James River Company and a member of the Church of God Family Worship Center. Theo loved playing pool and canasta, researching family genealogies, and tending his vegetable garden. On August 28, 1953 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Townsend) Hamilton and they were blessed with two children, Sharolyn M. Hamilton of Portage and Lewis D. Hamilton and his wife Mary of Kalamazoo. His family also includes one brother and two sisters, Fannie Lee Wright of Birmingham, AL, Billy and Inez Hamilton and Carolyn and Carl Gentry, all of Moulton, AL; a sister-in-law, Margaret Hamilton of Decatur, AL; a grandson, Matthew Lee Hamilton; and many nieces and nephews. Theo died at home Thursday, September 18, 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Pearl (Steele) Hamilton; two brothers, Wyman and Bobby Hamilton; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Hamilton in 1992. Friends may visit with Theo's family 2-4 & 6-8 PM Sunday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, Lovers Lane at Milham. A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00 PM Monday at the Church of God Family Worship Center, 5841 East H Ave, Kalamazoo, with Rev. H.D. Spivey speaking, where friends may visit after 10 AM Monday. Entombment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Mausoleum. Memorial gifts may be made to the church or to First Assembly of God Christian School.

HATTEN, Grace L.

Grace's life began May 8, 1918 in Monterey Township, Michigan, and she had been a resident of this area her entire life. Grace loved to take car rides with her sister and her family remembers her as a generous lady with a big heart. Her family includes her sisters Geraldine Bigelow of Plainwell and Velma Keach of Allegan, a brother and sister-in-law Robert and Phyllis Hatten of Hart, Michigan, many nieces and nephews. Grace died suddenly September 13, 1997 in Plainwell and was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Sarah Hatten and by 2 brothers Wilbur Jr. and George Hatten. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel, Tuesday 6-8 PM, and Wednesday 2-4 & 6-8 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday 11 AM, Fr. Donald Klingler speaking. Burial will follow in the family plot in Mt. Home cemetery, Otsego.

HEADLY, Richard "Dick"

Dick's life began August 22, 1928 in Plainwell and he had lived in this area all his life. He was a graduate of Plainwell High School and had served his country in the Naval Reserves. Dick retired from Eaton manufacturing in 1980 and had been a member of the Otsego Elks Lodge and the Otsego Moose Lodge. Dick's family remembers him as a person who enjoyed the outdoors, especially his summers on Pine Lake, he was an avid fisherman and hunter and was anticipating the bow hunting season at the time of his death. He also was a golfer, bowler and loved to play cards. His family includes his companion Iola Weyrick who he shared his life with, his children and their spouses, Karen and Dave Howrigon of Otsego, Sandy and Kit Norris of Perrysburg, Ohio, Deb Headley and Bob Cardiff of Plainwell, Denise and Joel Hasstedt of Martin, Donna Orn of Salem Oregon, 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Tony and Julie, Jayson, Dan and Annette, Megan, Matt, Jessica, Sam, Ryan, Ashley, and Garrett, his sister Charlene Riedlinger of Plainwell and a niece and her husband, Paula and Brad Deneau, his companion's family Sue Bowe, Janice, Marcia and Rich Weyrick. Dick died suddenly Tuesday September 29, 1997 in Plainwell and was preceded in death by his parents Lyle and Rena Headley and by a brother Paul Headley. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel, 6-8 PM Thursday, cremation will follow and graveside services will by held Saturday 11 AM at the family plot in Hillside cemetery, Plainwell. Memorial gifts may be made to the National Wildlife Foundation.
