Mr. William Allar
William J. “Bill” Allar, 84 of Gaylord died Friday, February 18, 2005 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Mr. Allar was born in Tinantorintown, Yugoslavia on February 16, 1921 and had lived in Detroit, Bloomfield Hills and Royal Oak before moving to Michaywe in 1986. On July 5, 1947 in Detroit, he married
his wife Alice. She preceded him in death in 2000. Bill received his BA degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University. He worked in the engineering industry for many years, and retired as a comptroller. He enjoyed being active. He loved the outdoors and was committed to his daily 3-mile walks. He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish and St. Mary Knights of Columbus Council #2781of which he was a 4th degree member and longtime treasurer. Mr. Allar is survived by two sons, Gregory (Nancy) of Ortonville and Randy K. (Peg) of Kentwood; six grandchildren, Erik, Brian, Scott, Jan, Brad and Dayna; sister, Mary Duchon of Harper Woods; sister-in-law, Catherine Allar of Canton Township. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at 11:00 AM from the Diocese of Gaylord Pastoral Center, Father John McCracken officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM and at the pastoral center on Wednesday beginning at 10 AM. Mrs. Eunice Artress
Eunice G. Artress, 70 of Gaylord died Monday, March 7, 2005 at her home. She was born in Detroit on September 28, 1934. She was raised in Detroit and had also lived in Dearborn. Her family was one of the first to build on Big Lake and they vacationed in the area for many years. On March 3, 1951 she married
Glenn Artress. The couple made Gaylord their home in 1964. Mrs. Artress had been a teacher’s aid at the North Ohio School and worked for Dr. Donald Cousineau. She also tried her hand at writing and several years ago was the “Big Lake columnist” for the Herald Times. She cherished her family and loved taking care of them. Mrs. Artress was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church in Gaylord. Mrs. Artress is survived by her husband of 54 years, Glenn; daughters, Glennda (Richard) Bush of Howard City, Hope (Bill) Kirt of Gaylord, Violet (Bill) Deemer of Gaylord; son, Billie (Helen) Artress of Kalkaska; grandchildren, Glenn G. (Yoki) Artress, Nadia Washburn, LaRissa (Matt) Paras, Stefani (Brad) Larson, William Deemer II, Eric Artress, Rylan Deemer, Lorne Washburn, Bernie Kirt, Isaac Washburn, Asia Artress and Christian Artress; four great-grandchildren, Alexa, Xaveria, Jack William and Paige; and one sister, Doris Johnson of Texas. Mrs. Frances Ashley
Frances Jane Ashley, 55 of Vanderbilt died Thursday, March 17, 2005. Mrs. Ashley was born August 24, 1949 in Cheboygan. During her childhood she lived in several areas including Cheboygan, Grand Rapids, Jackson Shepherd and Gaylord. She had also lived in North Carolina for a short time before moving to Vanderbilt in 1970. Mrs. Ashley was a graduate of Shepherd High School. She had worked outside of the home for many years, but had most recently been a caregiver for her son Troy until his death in 2003. Mrs. Ashley was a volunteer for the Vanderbilt Special Olympics and was helpful implementing the program in the Intermediate School District. Her hobbies included bowling and crocheting and she loved a good book. She also spent time on her computer and enjoyed searching through the Internet. Mrs. Ashley is survived by her husband of 37 years, Duane; her children, Shawn of Ann Arbor, Vanessa (Shawn) Hutton of Richmond, VA, Keetah Vermilyea of Brighton; five grandchildren, Alex, Chandler, James, Emily and Jackson; her parents, Eugene and Fran Lemorie; brothers and sisters, Eugene Arthur Lemorie, Raylene (Paul) Bohn, Robert (Shirley) Lemorie, Kristin Grace, Evert (Kelly) Lemorie, Albert (Kathy) Lemorie and Deeann (Ron) Miller; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Janna Blom
Janna G. (ten Brink) Blom, 89 of Gaylord died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Robert’s Gentle Care Adult Foster Care Home. Mrs. Blom was born in the Netherlands on October 16, 1915. In 1937, she married
Willem Mijndert Blom in the Netherlands. In 1950 they immigrated with their young sons to the United States, and settled in Royal Oak. Her husband Mijndert preceded Janny in death in 1988. In 2001 she moved “north” to be near her family. She was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild in Royal Oak and a member of the Hollandia Society in the Greater Detroit area, serving as treasurer for many years. Janny was trained in the Netherlands as a teacher, but she worked as a dental assistant for an Amsterdam dentist for 3 years prior to her marriage. It was this dentist and his wife that she and Mijndert hid in their home for 3 years during the occupation of Holland during World War II. Then later this couple helped the family make their way to the United States. She is survived by her children, Hubert P. (Roberta M.) of Gaylord, Edgar P. (Sharon K.) of Gaylord, Yvonne M. (Pete) vanVianen of Shelby Township; 8 grandchildren, Craig (Jaci) Blom of Allegan, Julie Blom of Metamora, Kristine (Scott) Gryder of Winston-Salem, NC, Matthew (Carolyn) Blom of Royal Oak, Elizabeth (Ian) McKenna of Watertown, NY, Sarah vanVianen of Macomb, Kimberly vanVianen and Eric van Vianen of Shelby Township, and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Frances Burzynski
Frances J. Burzynski, 82 of Gaylord died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at her home. Mrs. Burzynski was born in Gaylord on December 11, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Monica (Fluder) Nowak. She was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary High School. On April 28, 1945 she married
Edward Burzynski. The couple raised a family and farmed for many years. In addition, Mrs. Burzynski had been involved in 4-H for 48 years and taught religious education at Holy Redeemer Church in Vanderbilt. She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish and a longtime dedicated member of St. Mary Altar Rosary Society. Mrs. Burzynski is survived by her husband, Edward; her children, Loretta (David) Kasprzyk of Twin Lakes, Lenard (Shasta) Burzynski of Sault Ste. Marie, Rosalie (Gregory) Baran of Haslett, Thomas (Denise) Burzynski of Gaylord, Dorothy (Charles) King of Houston, Texas, Jean (Leon) Miller of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Jennifer Burzynski of Cincinnati, Ohio; and 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren (with the 9th on the way). She was preceded in death by her parents, 10 brothers and sisters and 2 grandchildren. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at 11 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. Mrs. Marie Clear
Marie D. Clear, age 63 of Gaylord died Monday, March 21, 2005 at her home. Mrs. Clear was born on July 25, 1941 in Gaylord, and after a brief period in Drummond Island, she returned to make her home in Gaylord. She was employed at Standard Products for over 20 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Gaylord 7th Day Adventist Church, and she also enjoyed reading. She is survived by her children, Dawn Martin, Leroy, Michael (Cathy), all of Gaylord, and Michelle (Greg) Fox of Florida, Mark (Tina) of Gaylord, and Monti, also of Gaylord. Also surviving are three brothers, and three sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband Leroy in 1992, two sisters, and her parents. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 24, at 11 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Pastor Terry nelson, officiating. Mr. David Deadman
David B. Deadman, 66 of Boyne City and formerly of Gaylord died Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Spring Ridge Foster Care in Boyne City. He was born in Otsego County on January 24, 1939, the son of the late Jacob “Doc” and Lily Deadman. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, February 14, 2005 at 11 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Reverend John Naile, officiating. Burial will take place at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-5 PM. David is survived by several relatives in the Gaylord area.
Mrs. Mary A.‘Pat’ Ernst
Mrs. Mary A. “Pat” Ernst, 83, of Gaylord. After suffering a stroke, Pat, surrounded by her family, was called home to be with the Lord on February 12, 2005. Mrs. Ernst was born November 4, 1921 in Calumet and graduated from Baraga High School. On December 2, 1949 in Ohio, she married
Harold A. Ernst, who survives. Pat moved around the state of Michigan with her husband, but spent nearly 20 years in Wayland. Later, she wintered in Texas and spent summers in Elmira. She liked to attend Michigan State Police functions and enjoyed playing cards and telling stories. She was preceded in death by grandson, Todd Ernst, and brother, John Lucas. She is also survived by her children, Michael (Aliene) of Delton, Shirley (Stephen) Terrien of WI, John (Lynn) of Elmira, and Mary (Roger) Larson of MN; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Jason) Stoneburner, Rebecca (Edward) Hoeppner, Jessica Terrien, George Ernst, Callie Ernst, Orin Larson, and Lucas Larson; one great-grandson, Samuel Hoeppner; brothers, Michael A. Lucas of Marquette, Peter Lucas of MO, and Joseph Lucas of Monroe. Mrs. Florence Fox
Mrs. Florence V. Fox, 92 of Gaylord died Thursday, April 7, 2005. She was born in Bay City on August 13, 1912 and was raised in Detroit. Florence was blind and as a teenager began attending classes for the handicapped in Detroit. She went on to attend the School for the Blind in Lansing and later Michigan State University. She chose courses in counseling and devoted herself to helping the blind. Florence was married
to Lloyd Fox. He preceded her in death in 1976. She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish, St. Mary Altar Rosary Society, St Mary Daughters of Isabella and the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary. She was also an active member of the Michigan Association Workers for the Blind. Mrs. Fox is survived by her son, Everett L. (Karen) Fox of Gaylord; grandchildren, Michael and Eileen Fox; great-grandchildren, Chloe Fox and Gabriel Kohnert; and several nieces and nephews. Along with her husband she was also preceded in death by her brother, Leo Faber, and her sister, Gertrude Faber. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, April 11, 2005 at 11 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken. Burial will take place at Resurrection cemetery. Mr. Alexander Goetz
Alexander J. Goetz, age 65 of Johannesburg, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at his home. Mr. Goetz was born on Aug. 25, 1939 in Ontario, Canada, and was raised in Algonac. Upon completion of high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, and served 11 years including 3 tours in Vietnam. He met his wife Lucy (Rafalowski) in 1968, and they were married
in Algonac on March 10, 1973. He was employed as a hydraulics journeyman for Ford and GM, medically retiring in 1985. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, DAV, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the National Woodcarvers Assoc. He was a past member of Perch Pointe Conservation club in Algonac, and the Northland Sportsman’s Club in Gaylord. When his health made it difficult to pursue other activities, he began carving, and was a gifted artist. Many of his carvings became gifts for family and friends. He was a jack-of-all-trades, building and designing two homes, a spiral staircase, custom cabinets, and dressers for each of his girls. He also enjoyed boating in the flats in Algonac, hunting, fishing, reading, westerns, and learning about history. One of his special talents was his wonderful relationship with his grandchildren, in which he had the magic ability to make candy come out of their ears. He is survived by his wife of nearly 32 years Lucy, and their children Kymberly (Gabe) Narayana of Gaylord, Michelle (Chad) Potinsky of Holland, and Jean (Jon) Morris of Gaylord, 5 grandchildren; Walker Lytle, Riane & Aiden Narayana, and Ethan & Evan Potinsky. Family from his first marriage includes children Joseph, Donald (Melissa), and Steven (Brenda); grandchildren Sherran, Donald Jr., Sierra and Logan; and 1 great grandchild. Also surviving are his siblings Gordon (Donna) Walker of Canada, Helen (Moe) Howell of Canada, Merrit Goetz of Algonac, and Gloria Duff of Johannesburg. He was preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 22nd at 1:00 p.m., Pastor Thomas Mammoser officiating, from the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc. of Gaylord. Mr. Russell Hart
Russell N. Hart, 61 of Gaylord died Thursday, March 17, 2005 in Miami, Florida. Russ was born on August 2, 1943 in Gaylord, the son of Paul & Freda (Wingo) Hart. He was raised in Gaylord, was a 1961 graduate of Gaylord High School and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961-1965. He owned and operated Hart Well Drilling in Gaylord. He loved spending time with his family and treasured his grandchildren. He loved relaxing in Florida and was an avid hunter. He also enjoyed gardening and tending to his yard. Mrs. Helen Huebner
Mrs. Helen M. Huebner, 79 of Gaylord died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 30, 1925. She was raised in Detroit, but continued to summer in Pittsburgh. She had lived in Gaylord the past 30 years. Mrs. Huebner worked in Livonia as an executive secretary in a local bank and for General Motors. She was faced with poor health and was wheelchair bound for many years, but through it all maintained a great sense of humor. She was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the church choir. She was a thoughtful and considerate woman and would send greeting cards for various occasions to many of the church members. During her free time she also appreciated a good book. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 3:00 PM from the First Presbyterian Church in Gaylord, the Reverend Mary McClure, officiating. Burial will take place at Parkview Memorial cemetery in Livonia. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 4-8 PM. Mrs. Huebner is survived by her husband of 58 years, Russell; her daughter, Susan Huebner of Sterling Heights; daughter-in-law, Barbara Huebner of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren, Karyn (Chad) Konkel, Bethany (Phil) Bowman, and Edward Huebner; three great-grandchildren, Alexander, Isaiah, and Gavin. Mrs. Ida Lucille Johnston
I. Lucille Johnston, 73, of Marietta, GA, and formerly of Gaylord, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 in Marietta. She was born April 20, 1931 in Johannesburg, the daughter of Mose E. and Melvena L. (Howard) Weber. Lucille was a lifelong area resident, and had moved to Georgia two years ago to live with her daughter. She worked for a number of years as a greeter at K-mart, and she attended the Gaylord Community Church. Lucille enjoyed reading and craftwork, and will be remembered for her love of dancing. Lucille is survived by her children, Donald (Yvonne) Johnston of Hermon, ME, Cheryl (Kenneth) Sims of Marietta, GA, David (Patricia) Johnston of Tazewell, TN; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcella Black of Atlanta, MI, Janet Black of Atlanta, MI; brother, Dale Weber of Grandledge. She was preceded in death by a brother Herbert Weber. Services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 5, 2005, from the Gaylord Community Church with Rev. Steven Scheer officiating. Mrs. Julia Kowalski
Julia S. Kowalski, 90 of Gaylord died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Kowalski, a lifelong resident of Gaylord was born on April 19, 1914. She was one of 11 children born to Ignatius and Stella (Lewandowski) Jaruzel. Mrs. Kowalski was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish and was a sacristan for the church for many years. She was also a devoted member of St. Mary Altar Rosary Society. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 11 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, the Most Reverend Bishop Patrick Cooney and Reverend John McCracken, celebrating. Burial will take place at St. Mary cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Monday from 2-8 PM and on Tuesday at the church beginning at 10 AM.
