Age 70, passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 1999. Mrs. Merritts was born on August 19, 1929 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was a retired hairdresser and a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. Survivors include her husband Jack; two sons, Scott (Martha) Merritts of Ypsilanti and Glenn (Arrila) Merritts of St. Louis, MO; three granddaughters, Alison (Kurt) Smith, Jennifer and Rebecca Merritts, all of St. Louis; two sisters, Elsie Burns and Ruth Neil; two brothers, Donald and Norman Schulverg; and several nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with Rev. Julianne Smeck officiating. Curtis, Barbara Ann, Stony Lake, Oceana County, MI
Age 61, of Stony Lake, Oceana County, passed from this life on Wednesday, September 23, 1999 at Mercy Hospital of Muskegon. Mrs. Curtis, formerly of Ann Arbor, was born on November 6, 1937 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Norman and Consuelo (Seeger) Beaton, who preceded her in death. She was a registered nurse and served well in that capacity for many years at the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor before retiring in 1989 and moving with her husband, Elvin G. Curtis, to their home at Stony Lake. She was elected as Township Clerk as well as an active member of the Zoning Planning Committee. Survivors are her husband, Elvin G. of Stony Lake; her son, Jeff (Katy) Pek and their sons, Joseph and Andrew of Ann Arbor; her son, Paul (Ronda) Pek and their children, Curtis and Christyn of North Muskegon; her sister, Norma (Milo) Conklin of Battle Creek; her aunts, Rosemary Seeger Jones of Norton Shores, Mary Huizenga of Chicago, and Gail Waidelich of Albion; an uncle, Robert Seeger of Muskegon; as well as nieces and nephews. We loved her dearly. Funeral services were held September 25 in Shelby, MI with burial at Benona Twp cemetery, Rev. Dr. James Gilliom officiating. Frantz, Helen Marsh, Chelsea, MI
Age 84, died Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born December 4, 1914 in Stroudsburg, PA, daughter of Randall and Louise (Fleming) Marsh. Mrs. Frantz was formerly of Stroudsburg, PA and Ocala, FL. She was an accountant at Franz & Co., and was a member of Great Lakes Seniors Golf Association, the Country Club of Miami, and Dexter United Methodist Church. On April 8, 1965, she was married to James Frantz in Hollywood, FL and he preceded herin death on June 30, 1995. Survivors include a niece and nephew, Charles and Vickie (Kudla) Hatch of Dexter, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Dorothea Marsh. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 2, 1:30 p.m. at the Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel, with Rev. Dr. J. Gordon Schleicher officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, Ocala, FL. Memorial contributions may be made to the Individualized Hospice or American Cancer Society - Camp Catch a Rainbow. Fields, Curtis Lee, (1942-1999)

On Tuesday, September 14, 1999 at 8:20 p.m., Curtis Lee Fields, age 57, passed away peacefully at his home. Curtis (Curt) and his wife, Myrna, moved from Ann Arbor, MI to Lady Lake, FL one year ago. Curt began his young career in the United States Navy, worked for the Ann Arbor Fire Department, and eventually settled into a career in sales. Curt spent his time in Florida driving around on his custom made golf cart, playing lair's poker, and visiting with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Myrna; his mother, Sybil in Ann Arbor; and two sisters, Donna and Sheree; his four children, Scott, Collin, Jill, and Dana; two step-children, Ron and Debbie; and nine grandchildren. Curt will be forever remembered for his kind heart, outgoing nature, and most of all, for his ability to make us all laugh. A memorial service will take place Saturday, October 9, 1999.
Palmer, Mother Mary Thomas , Meadows

Born on October 15, 1907 in Salem, Alabama, the third of six children born to Glennie and Ella Thomas. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at the Concord Baptist Church by her uncle, Reverend K.T. Thomas. In 1927, she married Theodore R. Meadows, also of Salem, and moved to Birmingham, Alabama where their two sons, Theodore and James Harold were born. After Mr. Meadows' untimely death in 1950, Mrs. Palmer remained an active member of the First Baptist Church of Graymount where she met and later married Deacon James E. Palmer. She served as an active member of the Deaconess Board and Missionary Society and, after Deacon Palmer passed away in 1970, Mrs. Palmer served with the Mothers of the Church until she joined her son in Michigan in 1979. In Ann Arbor, she joined the New Hope Baptist Church where, under the leadership of Reverend Dr. A.J. Lightfoot, she continued her service with the Missionary Society and as a Mother of the Church. Mother Palmer was the granddaughter of John T. and Lula Thomas, former slaves and the patriarch and matriarch of the Thomas family. At the time of her death, Mother Palmer was the oldest living member of her family, which now extends throughout the United States. At the Thomas Family Reunion in 1998, Mother Palmer received a special tribute from the 89th Legislature of the State of Michigan for her noble and faithful dedication to her family. The Detroit City Council also recognized her with a Testimonial Resolution for serving as the family's matriarch. After a brief hospitalization, Mother Palmer received her well-deserved victory in Jesus Christ on the morning of September 29, 1999. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, T.R. Meadows, M.D. (Barbara) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and James H. Meadows (Gustoria) of Jacksonville, Florida; four grandchildren, Deralyn (Harold) Griffith and Rita Meadows of New York City, and Deborah and Thomas Randolph Meadows of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her memory will also be cherished by three great-grandchildren, Damien and Sherrie Meadows and Harold Griffith, Jr. of New York; her grand-goddaughter, Dorian Moore, M.D. of Ann Arbor; two sisters-in-law, Dr. Mildred Meadows Tucker (Willie) of Birmingham, Alabama and Christine Meadows Murray of Detroit, Michigan as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 4, 1999 at New Hope Baptist Church, 218 Chapin, Ann Arbor, MI. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Elmwood cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, friends are requested to make donations to New Hope Baptist Church, The Neighborhood Health Clinic Fund of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital or to the charity of their choice. Age 82, died Thursday, September 30, 1999. Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 4, 1999 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 9425 Whittaker Road with Fr. William W. Lanphear O.S.F.S. as Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic cemetery. Contributions in Mr. Power's memory may be made to Hospice of Washtenaw. Caballero, Jose, Milan, MI
Age 35, died Thursday morning, September 30, 1999 at home. He was born on February 4, 1964 in Milan to Margarito and Dolores Caballero. Jose was a Milan High School graduate and was currently employed as a custodian for University Hospitals in An Arbor. On September 21, 1990 he married Sharon Hochrein and she survives. Survivors also include two daughters Anastasia Tasha Robinson of Milan and Cortney Goff of Saline. His parents and five brothers Victor (Mary) , Margarito Jr. Nino, Mario, Jesus, and Pedro all of Milan. Two sisters, Maria Wooten of Ann Arbor and Gloria Caballero of Ypsilanti. Funeral prayers will begin at Ochaleck-Stark Funeral Home, Milan on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with procession to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for 11 a.m. Mass, Fr. John Bosco as celebrant. Rite of Committal to follow at Marble Park cemetery, Milan. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 1-9 p.m.
Hessenaur, John C., Pittsfield Twp., MI
Age 79, died September 17, 1999 at University Hospital after a lingering illness. John was born on March 28, 1920 in London, Ontario, Canada the son of the late Clarence and Edna Hessenaur. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Ypsilanti. Jack served as a First Sergeant in World War II in the Aleutian Islands. After returning to the states, he trained new recruits at Camp Hood, TX. Jack married Maxine Carter on February 12, 1944. He and his wife owned and operated Hessenaur's Discount Stores, which were the first discount stores in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas. He retired to Tuscon, AZ in 1965 and lived there until returning to Ypsilanti in 1997. Jack is survived by his former wife, Maxine Carnes; and children, Gary (Anita) Hessenaur of Lakeland and Nancy Bull of Miami, FL; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence (Pete) Hessenaur and Edna Hessenaur, and his brother, Carl Hessenaur. Memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, October 9, 1999 at BELL-BOREK FUNERAL HOME, 7425 M-36, Hamburg with Rev. Richard Cheatham officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's memory to UofM Lung Research or Alcoholics Anonymous, Ypsilanti.

Long time Ann Arbor resident died September 30, 1999 at age 84. He is survived by his wife, Betty; three children, Sara (Peter Deloof) of Manchester, Glen of West Palm Beach, FL, Barbara of Ann Arbor; grandson, Shaun of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Barbara of Portland, OR, and Lois (Robert) Johnston of Calgary, Canada. He was retired from UM Hospital. He had many cherished friends, and had enjoyed his bridge groups, wine clubs, music, and especially gardening which was a life long passion that he shared with many. Age 71, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at University Hospitals in Ann Arbor. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Friday, October 1, 1999 at Fenton United Methodist Church, Pastor Carol Blair officiating. Interment has taken place at German Zion cemetery in Logan Township, Auglaize County, OH. Those desiring may make contributions to Heifer Project International, Little Rock, Arkansas. Louise was born November 1, 1924, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Fred B. and Harriett P. (Westfall) Newton. She married John Eisley on June 10, 1950. Mrs. Eisley was a graduate of Central Michigan University. She taught for the Rockford and Holly Public Schools and substitute taught for Fenton, Linden, Hartland and Beecher Schools. She retired in 1987. Mrs. Eisley was a member of the Fenton United Methodist Church, was active in mission work, including Crop Walk. She was a member of The Nomads. She served on the Fairwinds Girl Scout council and was a member of the Hartland Audubon Nature Club. Surviving are: husband, John Eisley; four children, Benjamin and wife, Barbara Eisley of California, Kimberly Ferris of Flint, John and wife, Karen Eisley of Dexter, Kristine and husband, Doug Reynolds of Fenton; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild; brother, Joe and wife, Mary Newton of California; sister, Lucille and husband, Tony Maran of Florida.
