Died April 7, 1999. Memorial service to be held Saturday May 22, 4 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4001 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. (corner of Ellsworth), Ann Arbor.

Hamlin, Martha Ann, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 75, passed away Monday evening, May 17, 1999 at Arbor Hospice, following a short illness. She was born on March 24, 1924 in Detroit, daughter of Walter R. and Dorothy A. (Peters) Eis and on August 22, 1952, she was married to Leslie Hamlin, who preceded her in death on November 19, 1975. Mrs. Hamlin had been a resident of Lodi Township for over 40 years and in 1985 she retired from the Ann Arbor Public Schools, where she had driven a school bus for 21 years.Surviving are her children, Tim McLaughlin of Ann Arbor, Rebecca Hamlin of Ypsilanti, and William (Barbara) Hamlin of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are her three special grandchildren, Emily, Benjamin and David Hamlin. Martha was a kind, compassionate and caring woman who was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. In her own quiet way, Martha touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103 &/or Humane Society of Huron Valley, 3100 Cherry Hill Rd, Ann Arbor MI 48105. Envelopes are available at NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd., where the family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 21, 1999. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 1999 at the funeral home with Rev. William Polkowski officiating. The family would like to express their grateful appreciation to the staff of Arbor Hospice for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

Dunavin, Jeanette Pearl (Jan), Dexter, MI

Age 80, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 1999 at her residence. She was born May 27, 1918 in Lakeland, OH the daughter of Chester and Orressa (Hutchins) Watkins. Jan attended and graduated from Pinnconing High School and attended Cleary College. She joined the Eastern Stars at the age of 18 years old where she was a life member. Jan was very instrumental in the Methodist Church in Savannah, GA and an active member there. In 1983, she returned to Michigan and resided in Dexter, MI where she became a member of the Dexter United Methodist Church during which time she was involved in numerous committees and functions with her husband. She is survived by her children, Kenneth (Marlene) Etchison, James (Mary) Etchison, George (Terri) Etchison, Barbara (Chester) Wilson, Jerry (Judy) Wheeler, Richard (Nellann) Grannis, Marjorie (Chuck) Wylie, Robert (Nancy) Garner and Samuel Smith, Jr.; 27 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ethel Zeilinger. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Samuel Smith and William Dunavin and one son, John Dunavin. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 21, 1999 at 10 a.m. at the Dexter United Methodist Church, 7643 West Huron River Drive with Reverend William Donahue officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery, Dexter, MI. The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dexter United Methodist Church. For those who wish, contributions may be made to the church in memory of Mrs. Dunavin. Arrangements are by Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Dexter, MI.

Camburn, Sylvia M., Saline, MI

Age 84, died Wednesday May 19,1999 at the Saline Community Hospital. She was born August 31,1914 in Pittsfield Township the daughter of Karl and Melita (Jedele) Hertler. She had been a Saline area resident all of her life. On July 17,1937, she married Joseph A. Camburn, and he preceded her in death on July 27,1998. Mrs. Camburn was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saline. She had worked at the Saline American Legion, Big Daddy's Den and also in home child care. She is survived by four daughters, Rosanne (Ron) Finch of Milan; Kay (John) Fisher - Irwin of Austin, TX; Bonnie Camburn of Kalamazoo and Jennifer (Davis) Toth of Saline. Four grandchildren, five great - grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by a brother, Luther (Hellen) Hertler of Detroit, several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Kathie Fude. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister, Florence Hall. Funeral services will be held on Monday May 24,1999 at 1:00 PM from the Robison - Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline with Rev. William F. Natsis officiating. Burial will take place in the Oakwood cemetery in Saline. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available ay the funeral home where friends may begin calling on Sunday 1:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Tschirhart, Louise E., Hudson, FL

(Formerly of Milan, MI)
Age 95, died May 19, 1999 at Bay Point Village, Hudson, FL. She was born February 18, 1904 in Huron County, MI to William and Mary (Leneway) Pechette. On April 22, 1924, she married V. John Tschirhart in Detroit, and he preceded her in death on April 30, 1992. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Milan Woman's Club. Survivors include six children, Mary (Bernard) Mazurek, Ann (Norman) Basham, John, Phillip (Carol), Gerald, and Fred. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and two sons, William and Carl. Visitation will be held Monday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy begins Tuesday 10:40 a.m. at the funeral home with procession to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. with Father John Bosco, Celebrant. Rite of Committal to follow at Marble Park cemetery, Milan.

Handley, Michael I, Highland, MI

Age 74, passed May, 19, 1999. Loving husband of Amy Jett Handley. Dear father of Larry (Denise) Handley of Auburn Hills, James (Darline) Handley of Lawrenceville, GA, and John (Amanda) Handley. Proud grandfather of Kelly, Michael, David, Zac, Reese, Max and Sara. Mr. Handley was the Assistant to the Vice President of the Communications Workers of America District IV. He served for over 46 years with the United States Navy. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 22, 1999, 1 p.m. at the RIVERSIDE CHAPEL, Simpson-Modetz Funeral Home, 5630 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford (248) 674-4181. Officiating Pastor Jim Combs of Faith Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 p.m. Interment Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Alcoa, TN. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to Boys Town.

Stringer, Mary Elizabeth, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Age 79, died Wednesday, May 19,1999 at her home. She was born in Ishpeming, MI, on December 6, 1919, the daughter of Jean and Mary Belle (Brazil) Beaudin. She was a graduate of Ishpeming High School. She was a member of St. Mary's Student Chapel. Mary was an operator for Michigan Bell and Southwestern Bell and retired after 35 years of service. She was currently employed by Great Lakes Bank in Ann Arbor. She was also a member of the Ann Arbor Pioneers. Survivors include her daughter Mary Katherine Stringer;one son, John Beaudin Stringer; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Jeanne Beaudin) Cullen of Norman OK and Mrs. John (Mary Belle Beaudin) McKeown of Loveland CO. Several nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 24, 1999 at 11:00 AM in the St. Mary Student Chapel (William & Thompson Sts). Burial will be in St. Thomas Catholic cemetery. The family will receive friends at the MUEHLIG Chapel on Saturday from 2-5 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 p.m. At 7 p.m. Sunday evening the Rosary will be prayed with visitation to follow until 9 p.m. at the St. Mary's Student Chapel. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Washtenaw or the St. Mary's Student Chapel Building Fund.

Dingler, Thelma A., Howell, MI

Age 87, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999 in Alexandria, LA. Funeral Service Monday 2 p.m. at Heritage Hills Free Methodist Church, Fenton. Visitation Sunday 104 and 6-8 p.m. at MacDonald's Funeral Home, Howell (517-546-2800).

Horvay, Frank D., Tiffin, OH

Age 82, passed away May 21, 1999. at Arbor Hospice. He was born in Budapest, Hungary on July 2, 1916, the son of Gyula and Rozsi Rose (Pollak) Horvay. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama where he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees. His Ph.D was obtained at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Horvay was married to Vlasta Vesely on July 31, 1944 in Chicago, IL. He retired as a professor of German at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel of U.S. Army. He served in France and Germany in World War II. Dr. Horvay was a former member and chair of Zoning Appeal Board, Tiffin Rotary Club, Who is Who in America in 1966, Modern Language Association, American Association of Teachers of Germany, American-Hungarian Association and American Council for the study of Austrian Literature. He is survived by his children Linda (Larry) Barnes of Lexington, KY., Vicki Nighswander of Ann Arbor, MI.; Three Grandchildren, Liam Barnes, Michael Barnes and Erica Nighswander; one brother, Benjamin Horvay of Isle of Palms, SC. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister. There will be a service on Monday May 24. at Turner-Engle, Tiffin,OH. 419-447-1221. Visitation at 12:30 prior to the Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor, MI. 48103.

Lochrie, John D., New Port Richey, FL

(Formerly of Belleville)
Age 85. Mr. Lochrie passed away Tuesday May 18,1999. He was born December 8,1913 in Larkhall, Scotland, son of the late William & Margaret (Dickson) Lochrie. Mr. Lochrie served his country in the US Army during WWII. He is survived by his children, Jack (Beth) Lochrie of Farmington Hills, Margo Lochrie of Ann Arbor, Nancy Dolikian of Illinois, Stephen (Marsha) Lochrie of Florida, Timothy (Kim) Lochrie of Idaho, Christopher (Donna) Lochrie of Westland and Dennis Lochrie of Florida; 9 grandchildren; 4 great - grandchildren; a brother William Lochrie of Illinois and a sister; Margaret Hendrick of Novi. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Lochrie on August 15, 1998. In-State, DAVID C. BROWN FUNERAL HOME, Belleville where friends may call 4-9 PM Sunday with a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM. Prayers at Funeral Home 9:30 AM Monday then proceeding to St. Anthony Catholic Church for a 10 AM Funeral Mass with Father Thomas H. Cusick as Celebrant. Interment, St. Joseph cemetery, Whittaker. Memorial Contribution in the form of Masses would be appreciated.

Henderson, Frederick D., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 79, Died May 19, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born October 12, 1919, in New York, NY, the son of Clifford Henderson and Lucille Cox Wilson. Mr. Henderson had been a resident of the Ann Arbor area for the past eight months, moving from Sidney, NY. He was an active member of the VFW Post #7914 in Sidney, NY and also a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Erik Campbell of Ann Arbor and one grandson, Nathan Jones. A Memorial Service will be held June 5, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the C.H. Lander Funeral Home in Sidney, NY. Contributions in Mr. Henderson's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or the American Kidney Foundation. Envelopes are available by contacting Janowiak Funeral Home, Geer-Logan Chapel.

Taylor, Lester H. (Buddy), Ypsilanti Township, MI

Age 60, Mr. Taylor passed away May 20 ,1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital of heart failure. He was born May 31, 1938 in Cortland, MS to Frank and Oda Belle Taylor and they now greet him with open arms. Buddy was employed by Crown Vantage Paper Corp., putting in 42 years before retiring in April of this year. He married Judy Mccollough (Owen) on January 12, 1973 and she survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Tammy, Leatha, Crystal and Vonda. And two sons, Tim and Shannon. Also surviving are ten grandchildren whom he dearly loved, and was loved by. Buddy has one surviving brother, Frank Taylor. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Buddy had said several times over the years, to tell people when he dies not to cry over him. Because he lived life the exact way he wanted to. And not everyone can say that. He was truly a happy man. We will miss you. Funeral Service will be Monday, May 24, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, GEER LOGAN CHAPEL with Pastor Richard Bruce of Tecumseh Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 7-9 and Sunday from 1-9 p.m.

Mitchell, W. Bede.,
June 7, 1926 - May 11, 1999.

A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Mitchell taught at several colleges and universities for over 30 years. He retired from Washtenaw Community College in 1988. He is survived by his his wife Barbara P; sons W. Bede III and wife Carrie N., James W. and wife Christian A.; and granddaughter Meredith. No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be sent to WCC Foundation/Ben Campbell Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box D-1, Ann Arbor, MI 48106. Attn: Ellen Kerans.
