Prokop, L. Jeannette Pitts,

Died on Sunday, May 16, 1999 at the age of 91 at Glacier Hills Nursing Center. She was born on September 24, 1907 in Prattsburg, NY, the daughter of Fred L. and Sarah (Kay) Pitts. On April 2, 1927, she married Stephen A. Prokop who preceded her in death (April 18, 1997). She earned a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from Syracuse Univeristy in 1928 and served as a teacher at the Elmira Free Academy and for many years as a librarian at Elmira College. She greatly valued education and thought it especially important for women. She served as member and officer in many clubs during her long tenure in New York: the American Association of University Women, the Athenaeum Club, the Thursday Morning Musicals, the Sororsis Club, various bridge clubs, etc. For many years, she was a member of North Presbyterian Church in Elmira. After her husband's death, she courageously moved, at age 90, to Ann Arbor, MI to begin a new life -- near her younger son, Father Roger L. Prokop, Pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. She lived at Brookhaven Manor where she enjoyed making new friends and proving herself an outstanding bridge player. She worshipped at First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor and St. Thomas the Apostle. She was extremely gratified by the love and support she received from her many new Ann Arbor friends (including some very special children) who responded to her gracious and outgoing spirit. At Christmas, 1997, she received an unexpected gift, a lovely calico kitten, Mistletoe (Missy) -- her first pet, ever. She responded with great joy to this new companion in her life. While delighting in her new Michigan friends, she greatly loved many people on the East Coast with whom she communicated by phone or mail. Her life and her ability to continue to grow and find meaning in her experiences will be a legacy to her friends and family. She is survived by her children, Beverly (Ivan) Stillwell of Melbourne, FL, Dr. Bradford (Adrienne) of Fort Myers, FL, and Fr. Roger of Ann Arbor, MI; four grandsons, Lee and Craig Stillwell, Edward and Alan Prokop; two granddaughters, Janet (Johnathan) Pregler and Linda (Timothy) Woofter; and one great-granddaughter, Katherine Pregler. A Presbyterian funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at Muehlig Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Michael Lindvall officiating. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. the same day at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Interment will occur in Elmira, NY at Woodlawn cemetery on Thursday, May 19, at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to the North Presbyterian Church, 921 College Avenue, Elmira, NY 14901 or, because of her great devotion to life issues, to the Pro-Life Charity of your choice.
