Sesi, Joseph M., Ypsilanti, MI

Age 92, passed away Saturday, February 20, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. Joseph M. Sesi, known as Uncle Joe to his customers, friends and extended family was born January 6, 1907 in Telkaif, a small Christian village in northern Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq. Upon completing his high school education at the American Missionary Dutch Reform School in the city of Basra in southern Iraq, Mr. Sesi immigrated to America in 1923 to further his education. President Theodore Roosevelt personally expanded the Iraqi immigration quota from 9 to 10 people to allow Joseph Sesi to enter the country legally that year. Mr. Sesi's journey to America was treacherous and adventurous, having been robbed of all of his money prior to crossing the Atlantic Ocean and later, having encountered Pancho Villa on a train in Mexico en route to Texas. These experiences fostered his resolve to seek good fortune and success in his new homeland. He came to Detroit where a handful of his fellow countrymen had settled and began working as a delivery boy in a grocery store. In the early 1930s, he opened his first grocery business, The Olde Shoppe and later, The New Center Market, a gourmet grocery (before gourmet became vogue) in the New Center area in Detroit, featuring one of the nations first frozen food sections pioneered by Clarence Birdseye. Mr. Sesi's customers included Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford I, the Fisher brothers and Harvey Firestone. In 1945, Henry Ford I was so impressed by Joseph Sesis work ethic and dedication that he offered him and a friend, Alan Chapel, who was married to a niece of the Fords, an opportunity to manufacture auto parts for Ford Motor Company. Joseph Sesi took the challenge, moved to Ypsilanti from Detroit in 1945, and started Ypsilanti Industries. As the demand for cars increased after World War II, Ford decided to launch a new car line and granted the two entrepreneurs a Lincoln-Mercury franchise in Ypsilanti. On March 14, 1947, Sesi Lincoln-Mercury opened its doors and remains one of the largest and oldest Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in the U.S.A. Joseph M. Sesi was an outstanding citizen whose loyalty to America and devotion to God were unparalleled. He was a loyal friend and son who never forgot his roots nor the beautiful Arabic and Chaldean languages he often used to express his love and gratitude. Mr. Sesi was also instrumental in helping immediate family members immigrate to this country and help numerous others financially to establish new business. Mr. Sesi sponsored numerous charitable, religious, and educational institutions and civic organizations as well. Joseph Sesis business accomplishments, his humanitarian gestures, his community involvement, his generosity, and his humility made him the recipient of many awards and citations. But most of all, they earned him the endearing and loving term of having been known as Uncle Joe. Mr. Sesi is survived by his wife, Catherine, of 53 years; a sister, Fahima Shammami of Southfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday, February 22, 1999 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 410 W. Cross Street, Ypsilanti, where the wake will be held at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be 9 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 1999 at the church with Rev. Fr. Edmond Ertzbischoff celebrant. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Mausoleum, 25800 W. 10 Mile Road, Southfield. The family invites friends and loved ones to a luncheon at the Southfield Manor, 25626 Telegraph Road, Southfield, 248-352-9020, after the interment at approximately 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Building Fund.
