Williams, Lloyd T., Ann Arbor and Lake Leelanau, MI

Age 80, died Friday, February 12, 1999 at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital of complications following heart surgery. He was born May 5, 1918 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Lloyd T. and Frances B. Williams. He is survived by his wife Nancy of Ann Arbor; a son, Lloyd IIIof Barre, MA; a daughter, Christina Michelmore of Pittsburgh, PA. Another son, Rhys David, died in 1977. After the war he was employed by the law firm of Hughes Hubbard and Ewing in New York before joining the Office of the General Counsel at Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn in 1955. He retired in 1980 as an Assistant General Counsel. He was elected to two terms on the Ann Arbor School Board, where he also served as president. During the Vietnam War he worked with the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, to whose causes he was firmly committed for the rest of his life. He was an active member of Memorial Christian Church, serving as deacon, elder, and, more important to him, general fix-it man. Lloyd was devoted to his family and a few old friends, taking special care to keep in yearly touch with a Dutch family he had met and become close to while in the Army. He rarely spoke of his wartime experiences except to remember with affection and sometimes tears the all-black company he had supervised and come to respect and admire during his service in the states. He said that he had learned more from those men -some ten or more years older than he, many unschooled -about human and race relations than from any other experiences he had before or after. Lloyd was astonishingly frugal in his own personal life and steadfastly generous to his family and friends and the causes he believed in. He loved to work with his hands, especially with wood. He built a National One Design which he sailed on Lake Leelanau for many years. He loved his home but his hearts joy was really his Lake Leelanau cottage, which he built with a friend and where he enjoyed making and fixing things and watching the changing colors of sky and water. He loved his church, but he was embarrassed when anyone suggested that he was a religious person. One of his wife Nancy's fond memories is his answer to her question, Just exactly what is a talisman?, Lloyd replied, Its a semi-religious object; sort of like me. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Christian Church, 730 Tappan, Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Memorial Christian Church Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice or to a charity of ones choice.
