Hiniker, Michael J., Geneva, Switzerland
(Formerly of Ann Arbor, MI)Michael Joseph Hiniker, who spent his youth in Ann Arbor, died suddenly at age 58 on Monday, January 25, 1999 while skiing on Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Mike was born on April 3, 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Dr. Jerome J. and Marion (Johnson) Hiniker. He was one of six brothers and sisters who lived on Harding Road in Ann Arbor in the 1950s and early 1960s and were members of St. Francis parish. Mike attended Tappan Junior High School, where he was designated Most Likely to Succeed, and graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1958. Mike was both a scholar and an exceptional athlete. He was especially proud of the eight varsity letters that he earned at Ann Arbor High, as a starting guard on the basketball team, an outstanding tennis player, and the captain of the cross country team. Mike went on to attend the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, graduating in 1962 with a degree in Civil Engineering. While an undergraduate, Mike was an active member and president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After earning an MBA from the University's School of Business Administration, Mike pursued a career in international business and engineering. His work led him to Geneva, Switzerland, where in 1966 he married Ninon Viatte, the love of his life. Mike and Ninon were blessed with two daughters, Nathalie and Valerie. This very close family maintained a home base in Geneva and their mountain home in Champery, Switzerland, but also resided in Greece, Africa, the Middle East and the United States. But no matter where they were, home for Mike and his family was their chalet in Champery, where they loved to garden, ski, and walk in the mountains. Mike was a very caring person with a playful sense of humor. He was a wonderful husband, father, son, and brother. To all who knew him, in whatever context, Mike was a great guy. At the time of his death, Mike was Program Coordinator for the Green Cross International, a non-profit Geneva-based organization, dedicated to achieving international cooperation in environmental protection. Recently, he had authored an article on solutions to the water problems of the Middle East and was in the process of coordinating a major international conference on that issue. Only two months before his death, Mike became the delighted grandfather of Lucas, the son of Mikes daughter Nathalie and her husband, Stephane Berchtold. All who knew Mike will miss him deeply, but they will likely cry and smile at the same time. Mike was taken too soon, but he was a wonderful person who had a very good life. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Jerome, in 1969. Mike is survived by his wife, Ninon; his daughters, Nathalie (Stephane) Berchtold and Valerie; his grandson, Lucas Berchtold; and his father-in-law, Marcel Viatte, all of Geneva; his mother, Marion Hiniker, of Lexington, MA; his sisters, Mary (Oliver) Oestereicher Hamill of Cambridge, MA, Ann (Kevin) Wilson of Ridgefield, CT, and Kay Peterson of Scottsdale, AZ; and his brothers, Paul of McLean, VA, and Jerry (Mary) of Ann Arbor, MI. Services were held for Mike on Friday, January 29, in the Eglise de la Sainte Croix in Carouge, Geneva. Burial services were held in the village of Champery on Thursday, February 4, 1999.
