Mr. Calvin G. Snyder
Mr. Calvin G. Snyder, 55 of Vanderbilt died Friday, October 10, 2003. He was born in Boyne City on December 6, 1947 and lived most of his life there. Calvin was a Vietnam Veteran and worked at Boyne Mountain for many years. He last worked for Unipro Unlimited. Calvin liked hunting, fishing, mushrooming, and building things. He would always lend a hand to those who needed it. Mr. Snyder was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Snyder. He is survived by his wife, Denise; two daughters from a previous marriage; daughters, Kelly Hayward and Stephanie Hayward; grandchildren, Todd and Kaleigh; mother, Lillian Snyder; mother-in-law, Denelda Joseph; brothers and sisters, Lester (Caroline) McGeorge of Boyne City, Wilbert (Carol) McGeorge of Clare, Lloyd McGeorge of Boyne City, Esther Hudson of Charlevoix, E.J. Snyder of Richardson, TX; and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 11:00 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Rev. Charles Fowler officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 AM. Beverly M. Straub
Beverly M. Straub, 79 of Vanderbilt died Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Straub was born in Port Huron on November 22, 1923 and moved to Vanderbilt 6 years ago from Mt. Clemens. She loved to read and enjoyed taking walks. Mrs. Straub is survived by her daughter, Michelle (George) Thomas of Wolverine; 2 grandchildren, Guy (Kelly) Hedrick of Lapeer and Douglas (Denise) Hargrove of St. Clair Shores; 6 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County Animal Shelter through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. August Sutton
Mr. August D. Sutton, 85 of Gaylord died Thursday, October 9, 2003 at Woodward Hills Nursing Center in Bloomfield Hills. Mr. Sutton was born July 11, 1918 in Dayton, Ohio. He had lived in Royal Oak and Plymouth for several years. He later moved to Lewiston for 2 years before moving to Gaylord in 1987. Mr. Sutton served in World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed playing bridge at Alten Zimmer and Michaywe’. Mr. Sutton was preceded in death by his wife Gladys in 1997. He was also preceded in death by his sister Diane Maxon. He is survived by his children, Geraldine “Gerry” (Lyle) Detterman of Troy; Gary “Dan” (Linda) Sutton of Brighton, August “Mark” (Jane) Sutton of Milford; 8 grandchildren, Joshua (Kimberly) Sutton, Jennifer (Mathew) Bourdo, Jeff Sutton, Eric Detterman, Ashleigh Sutton, Scott Detterman, August T. Sutton and Connor Sutton; brother, Leonard Sutton. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 3:30 PM from the First United Methodist Church, Rev. John Naile, officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 1-8 PM and at the church on Saturday from 2:30 PM until the time of services. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Garden Fund, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Katherine Marie Tripp, Oct. 12, 1948 - Oct 21, 2003
Katherine Marie Tripp passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 after battling cancer for nearly six years. Kathy taught sixth grade in the Gaylord Community Schools for 30 years prior to her retirement in 2002. In addition to her work as a teacher, she was elected to the executive board of the Michigan Education Association and the National Education Association. Active in politics, she was also the Democratic candidate for the 105th District of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1994. Kathy had many friends and family throughout Michigan, and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by her son, Chris Clark, daughter-in-law Ellen, and granddaughter, Katherine. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Saturday) from the First Congregational Church of Gaylord. Visitation will be held at the church today, beginning at 10 a.m. A luncheon will follow and there will be an additional gathering at the Otsego Club/Hidden Valley Resort, 2-5 p.m. in the Sitzmark Room. A fund has been established in Kathy's memory to provide assistance for students pursuing careers in education, as well as to provide need-based assistance for those students wishing to attend sixth-grade camp in Gaylord. Donations to the Kathryn M. Tripp Scholarship Fund may be made through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Harold E. Ward
Harold E. Ward, 71 of Gaylord died Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village in Gaylord. Mr. Ward was born in Pontiac on October 22, 1931, lived in Farmington for 40 years before moving to Gaylord in 1997. He had been vacationing in Gaylord since the age of 3. When he was young he was an Eagle Scout and later Scout Master of Troop #7 in Pontiac and Troop #45 in Farmington. He served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean Conflict. He was a 49-year member of the Pipe Fitters Union, Local 636 UA in Detroit and a member of the northern chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association and the League of Michigan Bicyclists. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gaylord. Along with bike riding he also enjoyed hiking, traveling and fishing, however, his family was his greatest joy. Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Margaret; two children, Stephen (Hui) Ward of New Mexico, Philip (Anne) Ward of Kalamazoo; 6 grandchildren; two brothers, Donald (Beverly) Ward of Florida, Robert Ward of Florida. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Wednesday (Oct 8) from 2-4 PM & 6-8 PM. On Thursday morning there will be a procession from the funeral home to Fairview cemetery where burial will take place at 10 AM. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at 1:00 PM from the First Presbyterian Church in Gaylord, The Reverend Mary A. McClure, officiating. Burial will take place at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 3006, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Catherine E. “Kay” Wilkins
Mrs. Catherine E. “Kay” Wilkins, 80 of Elmira died Saturday, November 15, 2003 at her home. Mrs. Wilkins was born in Indian River on August 21, 1923. She was raised in Petoskey by Bruce & Eunice Sheckler. After meeting her first husband, Tom Asher, she moved to Kentucky for a number of years. She later lived in Ohio and Florida and had been living in Elmira since 1999. In 1964, she married Williams Wilkins. While living in Florida, she worked for Wal-Mart for 10 years and was currently employed with the Gaylord Wal-Mart. Mrs. Wilkins was a very active and energetic woman. When she was younger, she enjoyed figure skating. She was an excellent seamstress and especially loved quilting. Mrs. Wilkins was preceded in death by her first husband Tom Asher and her second husband William Wilkins. She is survived by her children, Dianne Asher of Ohio, Carl (Debbie) Asher of Ohio, Yvonne (William) Lambert of Ohio, Elaine (Kent) Wilhelm of Ohio and Phil (Rena) Wilkins of Elmira; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Norman Rupe of Ohio; and sister, Helen (Fred) Andrews of Ohio. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 3 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Miss Susan Elizabeth Woodhams
Susan Elizabeth Woodhams, 52, died Sunday, November 23, 2003 in Saginaw. Born in Petoskey on December 12, 1950, she was the daughter of Leo and Gertrude Woodhams. She lived in Gaylord for many years and for the past several years she resided at the Pack Home in Saginaw where she was cared for by Janice Pack. Surviving are two sisters, Anne del Pino of FL and Jane Lawrence of PA; also nieces and nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, December 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, the Rev. John Naile will officiate. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord will be held on Sunday from 7 until 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Jody Black
Mr. Jody A. Black, 35 of Vienna Corners died Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Jody was born in Gaylord on August 3, 1968 and was raised in the Johannesburg area. He was a 1986 graduate of Johannesburg – Lewiston High School and later began working in the oil fields. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and loved his dog. Jody is survived by his wife, Fawn (Mankowski); two children, Bambi and Faline; his father, Archie (Carol) Black of Johannesburg; his mother, Marcella Black of Vienna Corners; two brothers, Roger (Kathy) and Mike of Vienna Corners; one sister, Cheryl (George) Klein of Vienna Corners, his father-in-law, Ralph Mankowski and the Mankowski gang. His dog, Queenie; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister Melvena Black. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 2 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Pastor Ken McGarvey, officiating.Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday from 12 PM until 8 PM and on Wednesday from 12 PM until the time of services. Mr. Henry "Hank" Blahut
Henry Albert Blahut, 79, of Gaylord, died Saturday, February 14, 2004. He was born on October 3, 1924 in Detroit, the son of Joseph and Mary Blahut. He was one of four brothers. In May of 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant, 63rd Infantry Division. He served throughout the European theatre, particularly the Rhineland of Central Europe. After his discharge, he married Irene Miller, on May 7, 1949 in Detroit. He attended a trade school where he learned masonry and upholstery. He decided to settle on upholstering as an occupation and went on to work for Living Rooms Inc. of Detroit. After a few years he started his own business called Style Center Upholstering. In 1969, the family decided to move north to Gaylord. He established his business, Style Center Upholstering, where he did reupholstering for 33 years. Hank enjoyed fishing, playing cards, trips to the casino with Irene and especially loved playing and watching the game of golf. He was a long time member of the Gaylord Country Club. Surviving is his wife, Irene; his daughter, Nancy (David) Counsil of Gaylord; 2 grandchildren, Lindsay and Eric Counsil; his brothers, George Blahut of Houghton Lake and Emil Blahut of Florida; his sister-in-law, Mary Miller of Farmington; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry Blahut; brother-in-law, Ray Miller; and sisters-in-law, Grace, Josie and Marge Blahut. A memorial is being planned for the spring with a military service graveside at Resurrection cemetery. Arrangements handled by Nelson Funeral Home.

Miss Alexis Blanzy
Alexis Raneigh Blanzy, age 3 months of Gaylord, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004. She was born on Nov. 3, 2003 in Petoskey. Her mother and father Jeff & Jennifer Blanzy, her sister Taylor of Gaylord, aunt Kristin Johnston of Gaylord, and uncle John Jr. & Debbie Blanzy of Ilinois survive her. Also surviving are her grandparents: Ron Szczepaniak (Kelly Kirby) of Atlanta, Dawn Johnston (Shane Johnson) of St. Clair Shores, John & Kay Blanzy of Hillman, great-grandparents; Gerald Blanzy of Ortonville, Irene (George) McCutcheon of Gaylord, Julie (Ivan) Polus of Montana, and Great-great grandmother Gladys Szczepaniak of Elmira. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Terrie Blanzy. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 13th at 2:00 pm from the Evangelical Free Church, Pastor Joe Sereno officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon, and at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the SIDS Research Foundation through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lucille Boughner
Mrs. Lucille E. Boughner, 74 of Gaylord died Monday, February 2, 2004 at her home. Mrs. Boughner was born in Otsego County on April 3, 1929 the daughter of Ira & Mary (Davis) House. Lucille had worked in the Treasurer’s office in the Otsego County Courthouse for many years and was instrumental in the development of the Description Department of Equalization. She had served as the Dover Township Treasurer for 29 years, was an active member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary, a member of RSVP for 15 years, a member of the Senior Citizens and a certified volunteer at McReynolds Hall. She was very active with local veterans and senior citizens by helping them file taxes. Most important in Lucille’s life was family. She also loved playing cards and the slots. On February 14, 1948 she married Harry Boughner, who preceded her in death in 1991. She is survived by her children, Iris (John) Parrott of Indian River, Don (Phyllis) Boughner of Sparr, Tom (Barbara) Boughner of Sparr; grandchildren, Donna Boughner, Alan (Jennifer) Boughner, Sara Parrott, Tina (Dave) Butler, Carie (Mike) Fitchhorn, Candice (Jerry) Boden, and Jason (Shawnia) Parrott; great-grandchildren, Trevor, Troy, Grace, Shianne, Jeremiah, Tiffany, Garret, Justin, Collin and Hannah; brothers and sisters, Blanche Montgomery of Sparr, Irene Siefert of Algonac, Lillian (Doug) Wilks of Charlevoix, Vernon (Maryetta) House of Sparr, Augustus “Gus” (Gloria) House of Sparr; aunts, Marcelle House and Lelia Matusik. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 6, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation will be held on Wednesday 4-9 p.m., Thursday 1-9 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. An Eagles Auxiliary service will be held Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. followed by a VFW Auxiliary service at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to either Amicare Hospice, First Congregational Church or to the charity of your choice through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Sherman E. Clark, Jr.
Mr. Sherman E. Clark, 82 of Gaylord died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at his home. Mr. Clark was born October 21, 1921 in Detroit. He graduated from Eastern High School in Detroit in 1939, Michigan State College in 1943 and Fordham University Law School in 1952. He served in the United States Army during World War II (Dec 1942 – April 1946) as a field artillery observation pilot. He was employed as a special agent for the FBI from 1947 – 1955. He later worked for Chrysler Corporation as a personnel manager from 1955 until his retirement in 1980. During the fall of 1980 he moved to Gaylord from Fraser. On April 8, 1955 in McLean, Virginia he married the former Shirley Lowe. She preceded him in death on October 13, 1997. Mr. Clark was a lifetime member of the Masonic Order and a member and former treasurer of the Northland Sportsmen’s Club. He served 4 years as a member of the Otsego County Board of Canvassers and was a member of the Bar Association in the states of New York and Michigan. Mr. Clark played the French horn with various bands including The Warren Community Band, The Moslem Temple Shrine Band, The Gaylord Community Band and the Charlevoix Community Band. He enjoyed golf, music and doing the New York Times crossword puzzles. He was an avid reader and also loved the outdoors and working in his yard. Mr. Clark is survived by his children, Nancy Bower of Grand Rapids, Marcia (Tom) Sharky of Apple Valley, CA, Judy (Dave) Bouley of Grand Rapids, Kris (Mike) Polus of Gaylord; 9 grandchildren, Meagan, Trisha, Dyanna, Krissy, Dan, Jeff, Michelle, Katie and Jessie. Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Hope Brey, in 2001.FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, November 24, 2003 at 12:30 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Rev. Joe Sereno, officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-4 PM and on Monday beginning at 11:30 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or to the American Cancer Society through the Nelson Funeral Home.
