TOPE, DONALD R. SR., 76, died on August 23, 2000 at his home in the Yacht & Country Club of Stuart, Stuart, FL. Mr. Tope was born on March 3, 1924 in Burgettstown, PA. He attended Duke University. While completing his studies for a Mechanical Engineering Degree at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, PA, he was employed in the coal industry where he served as President of his United Workers Local. Mr. Tope began his career with the Ford Motor Company in 1945. He was recruited into a newly formed Student Engineering Training Program. He was one of 51 students, several of whom became executives later in their careers, the most notable being Lee Iacocca. As manager of Engineering & Research, and later as General Operations Manager of The Glass Division, he was credited with several glass manufacturing and product safety innovations, including the concept of "Controlled Adhesion Vinyl Innerlayer", which was acknowledged as the greatest improvement in windshield safety glass since its introduction. He also had responsibility for the planning, engineering and operation of the world's largest glass manufacturing plant under one roof in Nashville, TN. He was later responsible for the conversion of company facilities from plate glass to float glass, in which several innovative process modifications were incorporated, which are now used by glass float manufacturers worldwide under license from Ford. As General Manager of the Transmission and Chassis Division, he negotiated an agreement with the Japanese for the formation of a joint venture (Japanese Automotive Transmission Company) to produce Ford designed automatic transmissions in Japan. This venture was the first in which the Japanese did not own the majority interest, and required the specific approval of their Diet. As General manager of the General Products Division, Mr. Tope negotiated the government ordered sale of Ford's battery and spark plug manufacturing operations and assisted in the preparation of the company for introduction of high tech systems into its products. In 1972, Mr. Tope was appointed Vice-President of the Powertrain Operations, and was elected an officer of the Ford Motor Company. In this position he was responsible for all company emission and fuel economy programs. After 30 years service to Ford Motor Company, Mr. Tope retired in 1975 and directed his efforts to the success of Tope Racing Enterprises, established in 1967 with his son Warren as driver, who was twice a National Champion in Sports Car racing, and the winner of three Trans-AM races in his Mustang. Tope Racing participated in the 1975 Daytona 500 in their Ford Torino and finished 14th in the 1975 Atlanta 500. When Warren lost his life in a road race in Pontiac, MI, Mr. Tope withdrew from active campaigning and concentrated on the design, manufacturing, and sale of an engine block to be used in Ford race cars, primarily NASCAR. This product was greatly successful, including Bill Elliott's million dollar win. Mr. Tope authored a book titled "Roses and Thorns in Manufacturing at Ford Motor Company 1945 to 1975" in which he reveals previously unreported successes, gaffes and near disasters in the manufacturing operations of the company, as well as little known insights into the Ford/NASCAR problems of the late 1970 s. Portions are archived with the University of Michigan Libraries in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. Tope was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Chairman of the Board of Ford Puerto Rico, Charter member of Carnegie Tech. Highlanders, Chairman of the Washtenaw County, MI. United Foundation, and had enjoyed memberships at Pine Lake, Forest Lake and Meadowbrook Country Clubs in the Detroit area, Birchwood Farms in Harbor Springs, MI. and Yacht and Country Club of Stuart, FL. He was predeceased by his son Harry W. Tope. Mr. Tope is survived by his much loved and cherished wife of sixteen years, Joan. Sons Donald R. Tope, Jr. of Bloomfield Hills, MI, Charles C. Tope of Chapel Hill, NC. daughters Donna Kay Tope of Ann Arbor, MI, Kristin Tope Rowen of Holly, MI, mother Helene B.
