Mrs. JoAnn M. Quay
Mrs. JoAnn M. Quay, age 67 of Gaylord died Thursday, January 30, 2003 at her home. Mrs. Quay, the daughter of Joseph & Marie (Sova) VanHorne, was born September 13, 1935 in Cheboygan and spent her childhood there. In 1957 she married Dale Quay in Gaylord. Mrs. Quay enjoyed being a homemaker and loved to cook. MEMORIAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, February 3, 2003 at 11:00 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home, in Gaylord, Rev. John Naile, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday beginning at 10 AM. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Mrs. Quay is survived by her husband, Dale; her children, Gale (Randy) Church of Freeport, IL, Arnie Quay of Gaylord, Marcy (John) Dye of Gaylord, Bobby (Janet) Charboneau of Traverse City, Randy Charboneau of Cheboygan; her mother, Marie VanHorn; grandchildren, Becky & Nicole Church and Joel Quay; brothers & sisters, Alvin, Gary, Billy, Dicky, Rodney, Christine & Susie. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mr. Charles Radtke
Mr. Charles Radtke, 72 of Gaylord died Friday, December 6, 2002. Charles was born in Detroit on December 10, 1929. He spent 37 years in Gaylord. He had been employed by US Plywood for many years and retired from the Department of Natural Resources. Charles was an active member of the Northland Sportsman Club and a member of the National Rifle Association as well. He loved to hunt and was very active in rifle and pistol competitions. He is survived by his wife, Lorelei; children, Scott C. (Iola) of Shepherd, Donna M. Radtke-Cross of Lewiston, Kern T. (Robin) of Elk Grove, CA; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother: Floyd F. of Livonia. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at 2:00 PM from St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, Father John McCracken officiating. Burial will be in Otsego Lake Township cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the NRA Whittington Center, through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Mr. Richard G. Rogers
Richard G. Rogers, Age 67 of Gaylord, died Tuesday, Feb.4th at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord. Mr. Rogers was born on May 12th, 1935 in Springfield Vermont, was raised there, and graduated from Springfield High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict, and moved to Walled Lake, MI in 1965. He married the former Delphine Dobrzelewski at St. Thomas Church in Elmira on Aug. 19 1967. He then moved to Gaylord in 1994. He is a member of St. Mary Cathedral, the Gaylord Knights of Columbus, the Tin Can Sailors, American Legion Post #18 in Springfield Vermont, BMW motorcyclers, and was also an officer of the North Country Riders in Gaylord. He loved to spend time with his many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews teaching them jingles. He enjoyed all outdoor activities including fishing, and especially loved to ride his motorcycle. Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife Delphine, and a sister, Daisy (Edward) Gosselin of Springfield, Vermont. Also surviving are nephews, Gary (Jeanie) Gosselin of Texas, David, Peter, and Jeff Gosselin, all of Vermont, and niece Diane (Craig) Smith also of Vermont, and many great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 11AM from St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, the Rev. John McCracken officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral home will be on Friday from 3-8 PM, and at the church on Saturday beginning at 10AM. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said on Friday evening at 6PM. Interment will be in Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center, Vermont. Memorials appreciated to the ALS Assoc, or to St. Mary School through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Patricia D. Weber
Mrs. Patricia D. Weber, 47 of Gaylord died Thursday, January 30, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Weber was born in Copperhill, Tennessee on July 14, 1955. At an early age she moved with her family to Detroit and lived there until moving to Gaylord in 1996. She had been employed at Wal-Mart in Gaylord. Mrs. Weber was an avid Red Wings fan and enjoyed cross-stitch and fishing. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 7:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Rev. John Naile, officiating. Mrs. Weber is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob”; stepdaughter, Dawn (Jason) Miller of Warren; grandchild, Nolen Miller; 3 sisters, 2 brothers, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Saturday from 3:30 PM until 8 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Weber family, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Troy Michael Allen Ashley
Troy Michael Allen Ashley, age 24 of Vanderbilt died Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord. Troy was born on Sept. 4, 1978 in Petoskey, MI., and was raised in Vanderbilt. He graduated from Vanderbilt High School in 1996. While in high school, he participated in special Olympics, and for many years he attended the Muscular Dystrophy Camp in the summer. He loved music, bowling, working at the computer, playing electronic games, and especially Harley Davison motorcycles. Troy is survived by his parents Frances & Duane Ashley of Vanderbilt; brothers and sisters, Vanessa (Shawn) Hutton of West Virginia, Shawn Ashley of Ann Arbor, Keetah Vermilyea of Cheboygan, and Veronica Bruce of Cheboygan. Also surviving are his grandparents Eugene J. & Frances Lemorie of Shepherd, and Elmer & Adeline Ashley of Vanderbilt, nephew Jackson Hutton of W. Virginia, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Memorial services will be held on Monday, February 24th at 1:00 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, the Rev. Frederick Nose officiating. Visitation at the funeral home will begin on Monday at 10:00 am until the time of services. Memorial contributions appreciated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mr. William Bandfield
William Joseph “Bill” Bandfield, former owner of Bandfield’s Grocery in Vanderbilt, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at home and in the loving care of his wife and daughters. Bill was the second of 6 children. He was born March 13, 1926, in Detroit, to John and Mary (Battle) Bandfield. Bill was a WWII Army Veteran and recipient of 2 bronze stars, a purple heart, and other honors. He was a member of the VFW and Knights of Columbus. Bill managed the Farmer’s Gas & Oil Station, Portland, MI, for 17 years before moving to Vanderbilt in 1964. He owned and operated Bandfield’s Grocery until 1984. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers; Jack & Jerry; and son, Tom. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan; daughters, Nancy Bottomley of Gaylord, Billie McBrien of Holt, Barbara (Donny) Nelson of Denver, Co, Sally (John) Bright of Ulysses, KS, and Susan (Vince) Houliston of Anchorage, AK; granddaughter, Angela (Mark) Jacquart of Lansing; grandsons, Bill Bottomley of Westminster, CO, Nic (Lisa) Bottomley of Kentwood, Mike McBrien of Holt, John Henry Bright IV of Ulysses, KS, and Thomas Bright of Ulysses, KS; brothers, Sam (Ruth) of Six Lakes, Bob (Phyllis) of Howell; sister, Joan Montgomery of Florida. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 14th, at 11:00AM at Holy Redeemer Church in Vanderbilt with Father John McCracken officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Resurrection cemetery in Vanderbilt. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or the Holy Redeemer Church in Vanderbilt through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Christine Bays
Mrs. Christine Bays, 69 of Atlanta, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord. Mrs. Bays was born in Barbersville, Kentucky on December 30, 1933. She was raised in Oakland County and had been employed by Kresge’s for approximately 15 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints in Gaylord. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters. Mrs. Bays is survived by her husband, Paul; 3 children, Frank of Montana, Patricia Ann (Dave) Yearyan of Oklahoma City, Diane Stutesman of Alpena; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Friday, March 14, 2003 at 10:00 AM from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial will take place at Ortonville cemetery in Ortonville. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from 4-9 PM. Mrs. Marie Bradley
Marie Bradley, 78 of Gaylord died Sunday, January 26, 2003 at Benson House in Johannesburg. Mrs. Bradley was born in Alberta, Canada on September 19, 1924 and had lived in Mesa, Arizona for 40+ years before moving to Gaylord in 1997. Mrs. Bradley was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Mesa. She enjoyed traveling and was a wonderful seamstress and floral designer. Mrs. Bradley was preceded in death by her husband George E. Bradley on February 4, 1977. She was also preceded in death by her mother Annie Komer in 1996, her daughter Judy Lynn Davis in 1998 and her brother Alex in 1983. She is survived by 2 grandchildren, Shane & Brandon Davison of Mesa, Arizona; 3 sisters, Nellie Legato of Stoney Creek, Ontario, Darlene Barnes of Hamilton, Ontario, and Pearl Peurach of Gaylord; 1 brother, Peter Gryff of British Columbia, Canada. Memorials services will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Gaylord, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Benson House, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. K. Leone Brown
K. Leone Brown, 76 of Gaylord died Wednesday, January 29, 2003 in Texas. Mrs. Brown was born March 13, 1926, the daughter of Harold C. & Irene M. (Milbocker) Bailey. She was a Registered Nurse and worked at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord as well as other health care facilities. She was active in the former Hospice of the North and the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed caring for senior citizens. Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, Rolland “Rod”; her children, Dennis (Christine) Alexander of Gaylord, Patrick (Shirley) Alexander of Gaylord, Michael (Helen) Alexander of Swartz Creek, Cheryl Brown of Flemington, MO, Bob (Cyndi) Brown of Webb City, MO, Barb (Kip) Granger of Gaylord, Dan (Elizabeth) Brown of Walker; 18 Grandchildren; 10 Great grandchildren; brothers & sisters, Thelma Holland of Grayling, Richard (Dorothy) Bailey of Farmington Hills, Rosemary (Carl) Gohm of Saginaw and Carol (Frank) Wilkinson of Gaylord; mother in law, Alice Brown of Gaylord. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 2:00 PM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 6-9 PM and on Saturday from 10 AM until prayers at 1:30 PM. A rosary will be offered Friday evening at 6:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Otsego Co. Commission on Aging.

Kyle Casey
Kyle Alan Casey, 16 of Gaylord died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. Kyle was born in Bad Axe on January 22, 1987. He was raised in Gaylord and was a 10th grade student at Gaylord High School. He played on the Gaylord High School JV football team and was advanced to the Varsity team during the district championship. Kyle was active in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed listening to music, playing paintball and computer games and loved science. He had a great affection for animals especially his 2 dogs and 1 cat. Kyle was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Cyrus Phillips. He is survived by his parents, Patrick & Susan Casey; his brother, Michael of Gaylord; maternal grandmother, Shirley Phillips of Bad Axe; paternal grandparents, James & Joyce Casey of Kinde; many uncles, aunts and cousins. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Friday, March 14, 2003 at 2:00 PM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Thursday from 2-9 PM and on Friday from 12 Noon until prayers at 1:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the family of Kyle Casey for a Defensive Football Scholarship through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Mrs. Theresa Comisky
Loving wife, mother, sister and friend, Theresa Marie Comisky, 74 of Gaylord died Thursday, March 20, 2003. Mrs. Comisky was born in Brimley on December 25, 1928, the daughter of Edward & Charlotte Beaune. She moved to Gaylord in June of 1993 from Mason. Mrs. Comisky retired from Quality Dairy in 1991 after 12 years of employment and had been working as a cashier at Carter’s Food Center in Gaylord the past 9 years; a job she truly enjoyed. On January 14, 1950 at St. Mary’s Church in Sault Ste. Marie she married her husband David, who survives. Also surviving are her 5 children, Patricia Cobb of Sault Ste Marie, David Jr. (Stacy) of Hudsonville, Eugenia (Dan) Putham of Charlotte, Ronald of Sault Ste Marie, Donald of Lansing; 5 grandchildren, William (Susie) Cobb Jr, Jennifer (Steve) Morley, Robbie & Ted Putham and David Comisky III; 3 great grandchildren, Jocelynn, Hayley & Justin; 6 brothers, Eugene (Mary Jane) Beaune of Mason, Thomas (Linda) Beaune of Sunfield, Edward (Jean) Beaune of Grand Ledge, William (Gloria) Beaune of Brimley , Victor (Terri) Beaune of Mackinaw Island, Joseph Beaune of Holt; 1 sister, Anna Shipp of New York. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother and 1 sister. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, March 24, 2003 at 11 AM from the Nelson Funeral Home, in Gaylord, Father John McCracken officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and on Monday from 10 AM until the time of services. A rosary will be offered Sunday afternoon at 3:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to St. Mary Cathedral through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Mrs. Lucing I. "Lou" Flynn
Mrs. Lucinda I. “Lou” Flynn, 93 of Gaylord died Sunday, February 2, 2003 at her home. Lucinda was born July 3, 1909 in Marlette, Michigan to Joseph and Neva Davies Hudson. She moved with her family to Detroit as a young girl and graduated from Northern High School. She met her future husband in 1928 and she and Glenn S. Flynn were married December 20, 1930 at Detroit Metropolitan Methodist Church by Dr. Merton S. Rice. They settled in Detroit and Oak Park, Michigan. During WWII Lucinda was an active member of the American Red Cross and drove trucks to Selfridge Field as part of the war effort. In 1955, she moved to Gaylord with her family and joined the First United Methodist Church. She was an active member for nearly 50 years— a member of the Hope Circle. Lucinda was employed by Otsego County as Deputy County Treasurer and retired from that position. Lucinda and her husband, Glenn “Dick” spent their retirement years enjoying extensive traveling around the country and spending winters in Weslaco, Texas and Leesburg, Florida. She and her husband were married nearly 57 years at the time of his death on December 14, 1987. Following her husband’s death, Lucinda remained active doing volunteer work and service through her church group and as a volunteer through the American Red Cross in assisting in blood drives. She remained independent, interested and involved in life into her 90’s. Lucinda is survived by her son, Larry (Cindy) Flynn of Harbor Springs; her daughter, Patricia L. Straney of Saginaw; 5 grandchildren, Melissa “Lisa” Straney of Clinton Township, Colleen Straney of Denver, CO, Eric (Alicia) Flynn of Gainesville, TX, Sara (Mike) Rostar of Charlevoix, and Leah Flynn of Harbor Springs; 2 great-grandchildren, Gavin Rostar and Lauren Flynn. A brother, E.J. Hudson, of Dayton, OH, also survives her. Lucinda was predeceased in death by her beloved husband, Judge G.S. “Dick” Flynn, and her sister, Ruth (Carl) Samuelson of Detroit. Lucinda leaves to cherish her memory her family and many friends. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at 1 PM from the First United Methodist Church, Rev. John Naile, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home was held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM and will be held on Wednesday at the church beginning at 12 Noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mary Ann Gerdeman
Mary Ann Gerdeman, 58 of Gaylord died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Gerdeman was born in Lansing on November 26, 1944. She was raised in Lansing and was a 1962 graduate of Lansing Sexton High School. After traveling for several years, she settled in Gaylord in the late 1960’s. She had worked for the Gaylord Community Schools for 23 years. She enjoyed reading and gardening and especially loved playing with and “spoiling" her granddaughter. On June 15, 1984 in Gaylord, she married Ken Gerdeman, who survives. She is also survived by her children, Brett (Alicia) McVannel of Johannesburg, Brian McVannel of Alpena, Allison (Chris) Carter of Louisiana; her grandchildren, Haley, Jordan and Jace; her parents, Harry & Chris Hardenberg of Lansing; her sister, Judy Krchmar of Texas. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at 1:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Matt Kinsinger, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 11 AM – 1 PM & 4-8 PM and on Saturday from 12:00 PM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mari Aileen Kaspala
Mari Aileen Kaspala, age 86, of Gaylord, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 in Saginaw. Mrs. Kaspala was born on Nov. 18, 1916 in Winona. She was a graduate of Graveaet High School in Marquette and went on to receive her bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette and then her master of education degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. She began her teaching career in rural schools in Marquette County and later in Mt. Clemens, Cheyenne, Wyo., Royal Oak and finally in Gaylord, retiring in 1975. She taught a total of 36 years. She and her husband, Emil, spent winters from 1979-1999 in Holiday, Fla. She was a member of the Otsego Lake Baptist Church, the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, the Finnish-American Club of New Port Richey, Fla., and the West Pasco Baptist Church of Holiday, Fla. Mrs. Kaspala is survived by her sister, Eleanor Nummela of Farmington Hills; two brothers, George and Roy Matson, both of Marquette; her foster son Robert Caras of Rochester Hills; grand daughters Kimberly and Kristine Caras; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 AM from the Evangelical Free Church in Gaylord, Pastor Joe Sereno officiating. Friends may gather at the church beginning at 10 AM. Cremation was the wish of Mrs. Kaspala, and she will be buried in the spring at Otsego Lake Township cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan through the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc.
