William Lenz, 90

KENNEBUNK - William H. Lenz, 90, a resident of Winchester Conn. passed on March 24, 2002 at the Southridge Living Center in Biddeford after a brief illness.

He was born May 5, 1911 in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of William and Jennie (Geiss) Lenz.

He was employed by Avery-Dennison, formerly of Framingham Mass., in its equipment repair division.

A longtime train enthusiast, he enjoyed the Seashore Trolley Museum in Arundel and was a volunteer conductor at a rail museum in Philadelphia. He was a member of Webber Lefebvre American Legion Post and the Senior Center in Lower Village, where he enjoyed playing cribbage.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Clark Lenz of Kennebunk; and one sister Jean Lenz of Lansdale, Pa.

A memorial service will be held in Pennsylvania at a later date.

Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

William Parenteau, 60

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - William W. Parenteau, 60, of Bonita Springs, Fla. and West Springfield, Mass., died March 11, 2002.

Born in Springfield, Mass., he was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School and also American International College, Springfield, Mass. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was also the owner/operator of Capital Insulation Co. Inc., West Springfield, Mass., for 31 years.

Memberships included the HBA of Greater Springfield, and the National Association of Remodelers. He was also a soccer coach for many years in East Longmeadow, Mass.

Survivors include his loving wife, Nancy Parenteau, nee McCrory, of Bonita Springs and West Springfield, Mass.; two sons, Michael (Eileen) Parenteau of Cape Neddick and Thomas Parenteau of Cotati, Calif.; one stepson, Thomas M. (Cecilia) Marshall Jr. of Ludlow, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Kelly A. Marshall of Ludlow, Mass. and Karie A. (Kevin) Carpenito of Wilmington, Mass.; one sister, Janice (Alan) Monte of Avon, Conn.; one brother, Stewart (Paula) Parenteau of Ackworth, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Thacher King, Matthew William, Olivia Katherine, Kevin Michael, Kyle Christopher, Thomas Michael III, and Shawna Leigh; one adoring niece, Kristen (Christopher) Godek; three nephews, Jeff Monte, Dameron Parenteau and Kyle Parenteau; a loving mother-in-law, Mary E. Parker; first wife, Mary (O'Callaghan) Parenteau; several more nieces and nephews; and wonderful and living friends and employees.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to a children's charity of one's choice.

Jessie White, 89

KENNEBUNK - Jessie C. White, 89, of Oakwood Lane, died March 23, 2002 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kennebunk after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 17, 1912 in Heatherdale, P.E.I., Canada, the daughter of John and Christina (MacKinnon) Campbell and was a graduate of Heatherdale Schools and Fisher Junior College in Boston.

She was employed with Ocean Accidental Insurance Co. in Boston until her son was born, and since then always put her family first.

She and her husband lived in Reading, Mass. for many years prior to his retirement, when they returned to Maine, where she was a member of Christ Church, and a former member of the Webhannet Women's Club and volunteer at the Brick Store Museum.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Harold White of Kennebunk; one son and his wife, Charles J. and Carol White of Lowell, Mass.; one daughter and husband, Janet W. and Paul Eckler of Acton, Mass.; and two grandsons, Matthew Eckler and Daniel Eckler.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at Christ Church, Kennebunk with Rev. Steven Hastings officiating. Interment was in Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, Mass.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Christ Church Organ Restoration Fund, 6 Dane St., Kennebunk, ME. 04043 in Mrs. White's memory.

Theresa Prout, 80

BIDDEFORD - Theresa C. Prout, 80, of Eastwood Condominiums, Hill Street, died March 23, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford.

Born in Berlin, N.H., Oct. 5, 1921, a daughter of Albert and Zelia (Caouette) Cote and attended Berlin High School. She graduated from Saco Beauty Hair Dressing Academy and owned and operated Terry's Hair Styling in Arundel for 40 years.

She was a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church, Saco and a member of the Saco Grange and AARP.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and traveling.

She was predeceased by her husband Richard L. Prout in 1989.

Survivors include her companion of several years, James Bill of Biddeford; one son, Michael E. Forester of Westbrook; two daughters, Mrs. James (Deloris) A. Mackell of Arundel and Mrs. Thomas (Linda) J. Litchfield of Wells; one brother, Edward Cote of Wells; one sister, Mrs. Laura Dube of Old Orchard Beach; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Darold Perkins, 80

ALLSTON, Mass. - Longtime Ogunquit resident, Darold Perkins, 80, died of complications from cancer on March 12 in Allston, Mass.

Darold (or "Perk," as many of his friends knew him) had had a life-long love of and careers in the theater and visual arts. Equipped with a booming baritone voice, he began a theatrical career in the '40s. Among other notable singing and acting accomplishments, he toured with Mary Martin in the musical, "Annie Get Your Gun." Later, he became well known in the Ogunquit area for a second career involving the creation of top-rate professional set designs at the Ogunquit Playhouse, the Royal Ponciana Playhouse in Palm Beach, Triangle Theater in Boston and other theaters. In addition, he was regularly in demand for graphic and other design work related to household affects, working with Gloria Vanderbilt, Martha Stewart, Town and Country Linens, Leo Studios and other design luminaries.

He was also well-known for his paintings. Exhibiting them in New York and Boston galleries, he garnered a number of important honors and sold many of the paintings to buyers throughout the US. He remained active up until the time of his death, designing for a New York firm and preparing for another exhibition of his paintings in the Soho section of New York.

A memorial service will be held in Ogunquit in June. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be sent to the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation.

Roberta Willing, 62

ELIOT - Roberta (Rae) Willing, 62, of 296 State Road, died March 24, 2002 at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in South Berwick, on July 9, 1939, the daughter of Robert and Eleanor (Eaton) Rae. She was a graduate of Sanford High School and a 1961 graduate of Simmons College of Boston, receiving a bachelor degree.

She had been a librarian and served as director of Development for South Kent School, a private school in South Kent, Conn., for many years. She later moved to Ogunquit and owned and operated Animal Crackers gift shop in Ogunquit from the late 1980s until the late 1990s.

She was a member of the Eliot Garden Club and was an avid bird watcher and flower gardener. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She was an avid reader and enjoyed exploring her interests spending time on her computer.

Survivors include her husband, whom she married in 1961, Charles G. Willing of Eliot; her mother, Eleanor Rae of Eliot; three sons, Charles "Chuck" Willing and his wife, Maura of Concord, N.H., Robin S. Willing and his wife Wendy of Amsterdam, Netherlands and Brian D. Willing and his wife Kathryn of Falmouth, Mass.; one brother, James F. Rae of Waterboro; and one granddaughter Elizabeth E. Willing.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Family requests that memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Roger Watson, 81

CONCORD, N.H. - Roger Edward Watson, 81, of Concord and a summer resident of York Beach, died March 20, 2002 at Concord Hospital.

He was born in Martinsburg, W. Va., the son of Roger Earl and Catherine (Mulligan) Watson. He was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Martinsburg and was a founding member of the school's first basketball team.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and took part in the Aleutian campaign.

He was a letter carrier for the Concord post office and operated Watson Antiques with his wife many years ago.

He was a member of St. Peter's Church in Concord, American Legion Post 21, VFW Post 1631 and the Sons of the Confederacy. He was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers branch 72 where he served as secretary, was very active with the local AFL-CIO and was a member of Letter Carriers of America. He was also a member of the Concord Planning Board. He was a cartoonist for several local newspapers and was an early American decorator, having decorated the Concord Coach for the Concord Bicentennial. He played in the Concord softball league and enjoyed flea markets and yard sales.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary (Hannigan) Watson of Concord; three sons, Thomas Watson of Portsmouth, N.H., Robert Watson of Rochester, N.H. and James Watson of Wellesley, Mass.; two daughters, Joyce Watson of Dover, N.H. and Nancy Watson of Natick, Mass.; nine granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Trewhella.

Services were held Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Carmelite Monastery, 275 Pleasant St., Concord, NH 03301.

The Bennett Funeral Home, Concord, N.H. is in charge of arrangements.

John Major

PORTLAND - John E. Major died Sept. 7, 2002 at his home in Portland following a brief residency at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough.

He was born in Portland, Maine on April 26, 1933, the son of Clifford E. and Anna (Donovan) Major. He attended Munjoy Hill schools and graduated from

Portland High School, class of 1951. He attended Davis College in Elkins, W.V. on a swimmer's scholarship for one semester, but left school to join the U.S. Air Force in the Air Police. Following the service, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marines and shipped on coastal tankers from Maine to Texas. He

was employed by the city of Portland and the Portland Water District, as well as Nissen's Bakery and Lucas Tree.

In 1958 he met Janice Chamberlin and they were married in Miami Springs, Fla. They resided in Hialeah for one year before returning to Portland

where he became employed in the U.S. Post Office. He worked there as a mail handler for 24 years.

In his youth he was a regular member of the Boys Club on Cumberland Avenue where he became a national swimming champion. He also swam on the Portland High School teams that won the New England Championship four consecutive years.

When he and his wife returned to Portland in 1959, he took up swimming once again and competed in AAU meets. While he did not continue to compete, he swam daily at the YMCA for several years.

At the age of 10 he was the only entrant to tie the National Checker Champ, Ray Gould, in a Boys Club tournament, which was reported in the Portland Press Herald, much to his delight.

He was a boxing fan and could remember details about the bouts and the participants long forgotten by most. He also loved the old movies and could tell you the height, weight and starring roles of most of the old stars. And last but not least of his hobbies was the horse races, both harness and flat.

He followed the careers of horses, trainers, and drivers and was a regular at Scarborough Downs for many years until his health failed.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janice; one daughter, Janice and her husband, Stephen Lorello and their children, Stephen, Andrew, and Sarah;

two sons, Michael and his wife Mary Jean and their sons, Daniel and Nathan and Thomas, his wife, Jennifer and their son, Noah. He loved his children and grandchildren and considered it a privilege to have so much time with them.

He taught them chess and checkers and played card games with them, passing along a lot of skill.

He also has three living cousins, Ret. Judge Robert W. Donovan of Falmouth, Katherine Miller of Saco, and James McGowan of N.H.

Visiting hours will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jones, Rich, & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A graveside service will

be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

It was his desire that in lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be sent to the Portland High School Scholarship Fund, c/o Tom Major, PO Box 388, Portland, ME 04102, to benefit a swimmer.

Patricia Mazar, 88

KENNEBUNK - Patricia Emily J. Mazar, 88, passed away Sept. 6, 2002, at InnSeasons, her daughter's residential care home in Kennebunk, where she resided with them the past three years.

She was born in Ealing, England, Jan. 4, 1914, while her mother was visiting her home town. She was the daughter of Fred and Miriam Page. In a family of eight, she had brothers, Fred and Lloyd, still living in Arizona and Washington state. She had three sisters, Grace, Winifred, and Eadie, all three now deceased.

The family resided in Seattle, Wash., where they ran a family grocery store.

She married Gilbert Parrott, now deceased. They had five children: Miriam, Janis, Joanne Colleen, Brian and David Paul.

She later married John Mazar in 1972, until his passing.

Miriam Peterson, her three children and their families reside in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her son Paul and his wife Debbie and their two boys, Michael and Daniel, her son Kelly, his wife Debbie and their children, Dustin and Lauren, and Miriam's daughter Diana and husband Kevin and their two sons, Christopher and Kevin live there also.

Janis Parrott resides in Spokane, Wash. and has four children. Her daughter Bonnie, husband Alex, and their two children, a daughter Rachael and a son Jamie live nearby. Janis' daughter Sandra, mother of Tanya and Starla; Del and his wife Lisa and their three children, Amanda, Mark and Loren, and Brian and his wife Stephanie, all reside in California.

Colleen lives with husband Robert Mitchell and youngest daughter Courtney in Kennebunk, where Patricia resided. Their eldest daughter Jennifer and husband Princeton Redford, currently live in Japan.

Her son Brian, died in Vietnam with honors in 1969, at age 19.

David Paul, a second son, was stillborn.

She was a hard-working lady, who loved the Lord, people, life and laughter. She was well-loved by her family, including her church family at Sea Road Church, Kennebunk. She shared the Lord with everyone and her life was a testimony of her faith. Her character and humor will be greatly missed, but as she would say: "I'll be in the arms of Jesus."

Memorial services will be held at Sea Road Christmas, Kennebunk on Saturday Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. Rev. Ken Hartwick officiating.
