Ronald Gideon, 60
BIDDEFORD - Ronald J. Gideon Sr., 60, of Elm Street, died June 17, 2002 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born in Maria, Quebec, on May 8, 1942, a son of Irene (Gideon) Rossignol and was educated in Canada.
He came to the United States in 1965. He was a truck driver in New York and last worked as a bus driver for the Scarborough school system for 10 years. He also worked part time at Bob's Citgo Station in Saco and at the Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarborough.
Surviving are his wife, Regina (Berube) Gideon; one son, Ronald Jr. and one daughter, Robin, both of Wallingford, Conn.; two brothers, Rudy Rossignol of California and Russell of Olean, N.Y.; three sisters, Rennette Wagner and Ruth Fitch of Olean, N.Y. and Stella Daigle of Fort Kent; and two grandchildren.
Rita Lamontagne, 84
SANFORD - Rita C. Lamontagne, 84, of Sanford, died June 26, 2002 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness.
She was born in Sanford on July 9, 1917, a daughter of Joseph and Victoria (Boutin) Boutin, and attended Acton schools and Sanford High School.
She was employed for several years at local shoe shops, but more recently at the former Sprague Electric, retiring in 1980.
Her first priority was her family. They recall that she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed flowers, shopping and dressing up.
She was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Roger R. Lamontagne of Sanford; two sons, Alfred R. Lamontagne and Paul Lamontagne, both of Sanford; four daughters, Elaine Rhoney of Leawood, Kansas, Gloria Guillemette of Sanford, Angela Meserve of South Portland, and Marlene Gerry off Newfield; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at St. Ignatius Church. Burial followed in St. Ignatius Cemetery.
Claire Saucier, 84
BIDDEFORD - Claire Saucier, 84, formerly of Vincent Avenue, died June 29, 2002 at Southridge Living Center.
She was born in Biddeford on Aug. 14, 1917, a daughter of Louis and Albertine (Brousseau) Talbot, and was educated in local schools.
She was a meat cutter for 25 years at the Biddeford Beef Shop and, later, Ralph's Meat Market of Biddeford. She later worked as a clothes inspector for Pepperell Manufacturing, retiring in 1987.
She was an elderly advocate with the Southern Maine Agency on Aging in Alfred and enjoyed sewing and making stuffed animals.
She was a member of St. Andre's Church.
A granddaughter, Deborah, died in 1970.
Surviving are two sons, Donald of Old Orchard Beach and Paul of Biddeford; three sisters, Theresa Scammon of Saco, Jeannine Lizotte of Biddeford and Rita Riley of Old Orchard Beach; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert Withem, 75
WELLS - Mr. Robert M. Withem, 75, resident of Bragdon Road, and formerly of Scituate, Mass., died June 30, 2002, at York Hospital in York, after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 16, 1926 in Scituate, a son of Jess and Marion (Ross) Withem, and was a graduate of Scituate High School, class of 1944. After his graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, and was discharged after the war concluded.
He was employed by Sears, Roebuck and Co. as a repair technician, retiring in 1990 after 40 years.
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier in Scituate, where he sang in the choir; he was also a member of the American Legion in Scituate and Sons of Italy in Hingham, Mass.; and enjoyed bowling and golf
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Eleanor T. (Emanuello) Withem of Wells; five sons, Robert A. Withem of Marshfield, Mass., Stephen R. Withem of Marshfield, Mass., Mark E. Withem of Rockland, Mass., Geoffrey T. Withem of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Paul Francis Withem of Marshfield, Mass.; three daughters, Beverly A. (Withem) Rider of Wells, Donna M. (Withem) Baker of Tunnel Hill, Ga. and Marion (Withem) Rose of Wells; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
A funeral service was held Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells, with Rev. Joseph Ford officiating.
Evelyn Cormier, 92
SPRINGVALE - Evelyn Cormier, 92, of 25 Oak St., and a longtime former resident of Kimball Street in Sanford, died June 26, 2002 at Goodall Hospital
She was born in Masardis on Feb. 4, 1910, a seventh daughter of Delmont True and Gertrude Ellen (McPherson) Libby. She was educated in Masardis and later graduated from Sanford High School.
She was employed at the former W.T. Grant Co., for 25 years, retiring in 1976. She worked in the pet department, mainly with birds. She was known for her caring, kindness, knowledge and willingness to help others. She often took in the birds of customers who were on vacation.
She wrote short stories and poems in the 1940s and '50s under the pen name of Lynn Cormier. She received several awards for her writing and had some works published in the former Boston Post.
She was a past president of the York County and Mount Washington Colony, National Society of New England Women.
She loved to fish with her late husband of 64 years, Peter Clifford Cormier, who died in 1998. She loved working in the flower garden and canning vegetables, jams and jellies.
Survivors are one daughter, Marilyn Dinardo of Sanford; two sons, Clifford A. of Sanford and Douglas A. of Cumberland; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Pauline Guptill, 92
SANFORD - Pauline E. Guptill, 92, of Sanford died June 26, 2002 at the Greenwood Center.
She was born in Cornish on Jan. 4, 1910, the daughter of Clifton and Blythe (Merrill) Dunnells. She attended Parsonsfield schools.
She played a key role in starting the Ancient Landmark Society in 1966. She was a member of the Parsonsfield Historical Society.
She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, genealogy, antiquing, and the outdoors, family members said.
She is survived one brother, Merrill Dunnells of Parsonsfield; one sister, Thelma Guptill of Shapleigh; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers Kendrick, Paul, George, Charles and Harold.
Gordon Phillips, 89
CAPE PORPOISE - Gordon Chase Phillips, 89, a resident of Wildes District Road, Cape Porpoise, died Jan. 5, 2002 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
He was born Oct. 10, 1912 in Leominster, Mass., the son of George and Bertha (Chase) Phillips.
He was a graduate of Leominster High School, Leominster, Mass., the class of 1929 and received a bachelor's degree in science from the State Teacher's College in Fitchburg, Mass. Later, he received a master of science in education from Fairfield University, Fairfield, Conn.
He served in the United States Army from 1942-1946, and attended Officers' Candidate School, and the U.S. Ordinance School. Two years were spent in the European Theater of Operations, and he was ultimately commanding officer of a transportation company to XV Corps of General George Patton's Third Army, and received a Bronze Star and four Battle Stars.
Before the war, he was employed by Shirley, Mass. public schools as teacher and principal. Following the war he was a product manager of several textile companies one of which was Textron. After many years in the business industry, he decided to return to the teaching profession. At age 49, after receiving his master's degree, he secured a job as elementary school principal in North Salem, N.Y., where after 16 years he retired as middle school principal and curriculum coordinator for the school district.
Upon retirement, he and his wife retired to the cozy seacoast town of Kennebunkport where he became involved with many local organizations including; South Congregational Church and the Graves Public Library. He was a member of the Kennebunkport Historic Society, Rivertree Arts, Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, and a member of the Old Goats, a male senior citizens social group.
He is predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Ruth (Montgomery) Phillips, who died in 1988.
He is survived by one son, Lee Phillips of Cape Porpoise; one daughter, Jane Phillips Person of Batavia, Iowa; and three grandchildren, Eric, Ben and Kristin Person, all of Batavia, Iowa.
A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Riverside cemetery in Milford, N.H. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Susan Brown, 97
BIDDEFORD - Susan F. Brown, 97, a resident of South Ridge Living Center, Biddeford, formerly of Old Falls Road, Kennebunk, died Jan. 4, 2002 at her residence following a long illness.
She was born in Kennebunk, Jan. 27, 1904, the daughter of Joseph T. and A. Emma (Cheney) Brown.
She graduated from Kennebunk High School with the class of 1922 and was a member of the Advent Christian Church.
She was a housekeeper for many years.
She was predeceased by her sister, Josephine Briggs.
She is survived by a niece.
A funeral is being held today at noon at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel.
Eleanor Foster, 92
KENNEBUNK - Eleanor S. Foster, 92, a resident of Ross Road, Kennebunk, formerly of Maine Street, Kennebunkport, died Jan 2, 2002 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a long illness.
She was born in Kennebunkport, Maine on Aug. 22, 1909, a daughter of Henry and Mary (Grant) Seavey. She graduated from Kennebunkport High School and attended secretary school in Portland.
In her early years, she was employed by the YWCA in Portland for several years.
In 1935, she married to Capt. Hamilton W. Foster.
She was a homemaker for most of her life.
She was a member of the order of the Eastern Star and also member of the South Congregational Church both of Kennebunkport.
She enjoyed knitting, cooking and rug hooking.
She was predeceased by her husband who died in 1974 and her brother Wilson Seavey.
She is survived by one son, Alexander H, Foster of Upton, Mass.; one daughter, Suzanne W. Foster of Manlius, New York; one nephew, David Seavey of Columbia, South Carolina; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Saturday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, with the Rev. Charles Whitson officiating. Interment was in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport. Arrangements by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
John Howgate, 87
SPRINGVALE - John Howgate, 87, of Springvale, died Jan. 6, 2002 at the Goodall Hospital, Sanford.
Born on Sept. 29, 1914 in Sanford, he was the son of Harry and Louisa (Gummersal) Howgate and was a 1931 graduate of Sanford High School.
He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II. During his time in the Navy, he was on the carrier USS Long Island, the battleship the USS Texas and the destroyer, USS Dickerson.
He worked for the Goodall Sanford Mills until their closing, then moving to Plaistow, N.H., he worked for Kezar Mfg. for one year. Moving back to Sanford, he worked for Alloy Products for six years. He worked for 14 years and retired from Sanders Associates in Nashua, N.H.
He was a longtime member of the Sanford Country Club, member and past Master of the Springvale Masonic Lodge 190 AF&AM, member of the Springvale First Baptist Church and the Mousam Lake Grange, Shapleigh; member of the YMCA of Sanford; coached Little League. He enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel (Grant) Howgate of Springvale; two sons, Nate Howgate and his wife Jane of Shapleigh and Barry Howgate and his wife Judy of North Yarmouth; one sister, Gladys Stilphen of Sanford; four grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Parker Jones, 69
SANFORD - Parker H. Jones, 69, a resident of Twombley Street, Sanford, formerly of Lyman, died Jan. 5, 2002 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Kennebunkport, the son of Arthur and Mildred (Howard) Jones. He graduated from Kennebunk High School the class of 1954.
He was a Vietnam veteran served in the Army from 1966 to 1971.
He worked several various jobs then was employed by the Portsmouth Shipyard as crane operator for several years. After his retirement, he drove truck for his son's business.
He was a member of the VFW post of Sanford, American Legion of Lyman and the Lions Club of Massabeesic (Waterboro).
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was predeceased by his parents, his four brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by one son, Timothy Jones of Lyman; two daughters, Tracey Layton of Wilmington, N.C. and Tina Jones of Westbrook; two brothers, Eben Jones of Arundel and John H. Jones of Virginia; one sister, Mrs. Sallie Turner of N. Kingston, R.I.; and one grandson, Jacob Layton
