Grace M. Chewning, 89

KENNEBUNK - Grace M. Chewning, 89, a resident of Penny Lane and formerly of Cape Porpoise, died at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness. She was the widow of Thomas Remington Chewning, who died in 1961.

She was born June 15, 1912 in Millington, N.J., a daughter of George Dallas and Anna L. (Hanlon) Mackay and was a graduate of Montclair, New Jersey schools.

She was employed as a librarian with the towns of Wyckoff, N.J. and then Oakland, N.J., retiring in 1974. In 1981 she moved to Cape Porpoise, where she resided until moving to the Atria Kennebunk.

She was a member of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk, AARP, and a longtime member of the Audubon Society, and was an avid bird watcher.

Survivors include one son, Victor Chewning of Kennebunk; one daughter, Donna Rabenow of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Dorothy Brignola of Jackson, N.J.; five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on June 15, at 2 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Main Street, Kennebunk with Rev. Paul L'Herrou officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Main Street, Kennebunk, ME 03043 or to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, PO Box 7028, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014, in Mrs. Chewning's memory.

Robert Estes, 67

WELLS - Robert A. Estes, 67, of Swamp John Road, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully, April 29, 2002, surrounded by family at his home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1934, in North Berwick, a son of George A. and Dorothy (Simioni) Estes. He attended North Berwick schools.

He served for the United States Army during the Korean War.

He retired as a supervisor in 1997 from Tenneford Weaving Co. Inc. of Sanford after devoting 40 years to the company.

He was a member of the Trailblazers Family Club of Wells and had served as president from 1987-1989.

He was a loving family man who cherished spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed woodworking and spent many hours creating things for his family. He was an avid outdoorsman who especially loved fishing and hunting. He was able to pass on many hunting traditions to his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, MaryAnn (Godin) Estes; one son, Robert L. and wife Monique of Fletcher, Vt.; four daughters, Deborah and husband Jack Gove of North Berwick, Cindy and husband Bobby Mitchell, Susan and husband Ricky Doucette, all of Wells and Robin Estes of Springvale; two brothers, David and Wayne, both of New Hampshire; one sister, Marlene Boston of North Berwick; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 236 Eldridge Road, Wells.

Friends who wish may contribute to Hospice of York, 1A Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Josephine Gagnon, 94

SOUTH BERWICK - Josephine Gagnon, 94, formerly of Main Street, South Berwick and more recently of Sentry Hill, York died April 24, 2002, at the York Hospital.

She was born in Sydney Nova Scotia, Canada on June 11, 1907, the daughter of Roderick and Catherine (Campbell) MacLeod and was a former resident of Boston prior to moving here in 1931.

She was a member of the First Parish Federated Church, the Ladies Group of the church and the South Berwick Woman's Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Roberta G. DesMarais of Somersworth, N.H.; one son, Peter R. Gagnon of Kennebunk; five grandchildren, Mark Gagnon of South Berwick, Dr. James Gagnon of Bangor, Pamela Hunihan of Eustis, Fla., Allison Gay of South Berwick and Reagan Gagnon of Kennebunk; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert S. Gagnon who died in 1978, her son Richard P. Gagnon who died in 1991 and a grandson, Peter R. DesMarais who died in 1993.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, New Hampshire with Rev. Donna Lee Muise, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. Michael's Cemetery, Rollinsford, N.H.

Genevieve Spaulding, 80

SANFORD - Genevieve A. Spaulding, 80, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Sanford, died April 15, 2002.

She was born June 26, 1921, the daughter of James and Frances (Howard) Brady, and attended school in Massachusetts.

She moved to the Sanford area in the early 1940s.

She spent most of her life at home raising her four children and later worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter.

She was a member of the Rebeccas.

Her husband, Carlton Spaulding, died in 1975.

Surviving are three daughters, Carleen McKee of Vero Beach, Karen Brown of Benton and Gail Giberti of Rockwood; one son, Carlton of Rolulus, N.Y.; one step-daughter, Nancy Belanger of Dania Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Eleanor Gould, 73

KENNEBUNK - Eleanor (Fanning) Gould, 73, of 7 Woodside Drive and formerly of Woonsocket died April 24, 2002, at Bradford on the Commons, Kennebunk. She was the wife of the late Henry H. Gould who died May 13, 1996.

She was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, a daughter of the late Richard Frances and Annuciade (St. Jacques) Fanning. She was a Woonsocket, R.I., Martinsville, Virginia, North Adams, Mass., and Concord, N.H. resident before moving to Maine in 1967.

She graduated from Rhode Island College of Education in 1949 and taught for three years in the first public kindergarten in Woonsocket, R.I. She received her masters of science in education in 1975 from the University of Maine. She then taught in the Kennebunk elementary school system for 17 years before retiring in 1988.

She and her husband were married in 1952. She was a communicant of St. Martha Church in Kennebunk.

She spent many years studying the Abenaki and MicMac Indians and wrote a series of Indian stories for children.

She is survived by three sons, Richard F. Gould of Solon, Ohio, Christopher A. Gould of Yarmouth, Maine, and David G. Gould of Winterport, Maine; two daughters, Valerie J. Anastasia of Barrington, R.I. and Elizabeth A. Gould of Lexington, Mass.; two brothers, Richard Fanning of Eugene, Ore. and Gerard Fanning of Woonsocket, R.I.; one sister, Andree Fanning of Woonsocket, R.I.; and 14 grandchildren.

She was also sister of the late Marion Asmussen, Evelyn Bonin and John Fanning.

Her funeral was held Saturday at the Kilcline Funeral Home, Woonsocket, R.I., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph's Church, Woonsocket, R.I. Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Blackstone, Mass.

A memorial Mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Martha Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Church Community Outreach Services (The Food Pantry), PO Box 1175, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Norman Macdonald, 77

YORK - Norman Macdonald, 77, of York died in York Hospital on April 21, 2002, after a long battle with cancer, a result of radiation exposure.

He was born in Boston, Mass. on Aug. 15, 1924, the son of Malcolm J. and Mabelle (Warner) Macdonald. He graduated from Chevy Chase High School, Md. He graduated from CalTech with a BS in science and an MS in meteorology. He did extended graduate work at MIT.

He served in the U.S. Navy on active duty and in the reserves from 1942 to 1963. In 1952 he was part of the team at Eniwetok, the detonation of the first H-bomb, for which he received Congressional Recognition.

He did extensive research at High Altitude Observatory, University of Colorado, Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, and 10 years at the Meteorology Department at MIT. He was the meteorologist on WBS-TV from 1960-1977, at which time he embarked on his radio career with Weather Services and then with AccuWeather. While at AccuWeather, he began doing forensic meteorology and continued this until recently. After retiring, Norman Macdonald did extensive investigation of the Global Warming hypothesis. He and his research associate presented their research to the United Nations in 1993 and he presented the same to a U.S. Congressional Committee. Over his professional career he had three dozen formal publications in scientific journals.

He and his wife, Carol, move to York in 1992. He wrote weather-related articles for the York Weekly and Foster's Democrat. As an active member of the First Parish Church, he served on the diaconate, men's fellowship and was the MC for the annual "Christmas in the Village" concert. He was an active member of the Lion's Club and was presented the prestigious Melvin Jones award.

He was a mentor for several young people in the York school system and served the Little League in York.

He leaves his wife, Carol (Schreiber, Gurner); two sons, Collin of Hawaii, and Brian and his wife Brenda of Dracut, Mass.; two daughters, Christina of Clifton, Va., and Lauren Piechowicz and her husband, Edward, of Granville, Ohio; one stepson, Joel Gurner of Fort Meyers, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Hilary Steinberg of Boalsburg, Pa. and Sarah Gurner of South Berwick; and nine grandchildren.

In the spirit of scientific truth, his body was donated to science. Therefore, a memorial service was held at the First Parish Church, York, on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Parish Church or to the Lion's Club of York.

Rita St. Onge, 83

KENNEBUNK - Rita A. (Fortier) St. Onge, 83, a resident of Kennebunk and formerly of Lowell, Mass., died April 27, 2002, in Maine.

She was the mother of Marc St. Onge and his wife Claire of Wells, Marie Louise St. Onge of Kennebunk; grandmother of William R. Menaghan, Stephanie R. and her husband Andrew Hanson of Lyndsay St. Onge, all of Massachusetts; sister of the late Jeanne St. Onge, Marguerite Fortier and Louise Fortier; late employee of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Lowell District Court as a principal clerk.

She was the wife of the late Henry St. Onge who died in 1992.

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday morning at Ste. Jeanne d'Arc Church, Lowell, Mass.

Donations may be made to the Lowell Association for the Blind, 174 Central St., Lowell, MA 01852 or the Kennebunk Land Trust, 113 Lafayette Center, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Roland W. Martin Funeral Home, Lowell, Mass was in charge of the arrangements.

FT. MYERS, Fla. - Alexander Peter D'Ascanio, 83, formerly of Kennebunkport, died April 9, 2002 in Fort Myers.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, where a Memorial Service will be held at Saturday, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Richard Curtis, 52

CAPE PORPOISE - Richard Curtis, 52, of Cape Porpoise, died May 24, 2002 in a boating accident. He was the lighthouse keeper at Goat Island Light.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1949 in Marblehead, Mass. the fourth child of John W. Curtis and Florence (Smethurst) Curtis. He attended Marblehead schools, and when he graduated he worked on fishing boats in Marblehead, deep sea lobstering on both the Sea Star and Sea Fever.

He came to Cape Porpoise eight years ago, after living in Colorado and New Hampshire. He has been a fixture in Cape Porpoise, working at Langsford Road Fish House, both with the fisherman, the public and delivering to local eateries.

While at the lighthouse, he kept pages of logs on the harbor business, including tides, winds, weather and on the fisherman using the harbor. He was known for being a naturalist, knowledgeable about the sea, animals, birds, astronomy.

He is survived by two brothers, John and sister-in-law Caroline, of Englewood, Florida and children Tammy and Pamela, William and sister-in-law Ruth of Danvers, Mass. and children Eric and Sean; one sister, Sandra and brother-in-law Jeremiah Callaghan of Marblehead, Mass. and children Sheila and Kevin; many great nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at the Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise at 5 p.m. on Saturday, with the Rev. William Gardei officiating. It will be followed by a potluck supper at Atlantic Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust or the West Kennebunk Animal Shelter.

Joseph Arnold, 80

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Joseph Edward Arnold, 80, life-long resident of Manchester, died May 24, 2002 at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born March 3, 1922 in Manchester, the son of Charles W. and Jessie Belle (Trask) Arnold. He grew up in Manchester and attended Manchester schools. He enlisted in the Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945 and served in the five major battles of the war in Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a member of the 113th Field Artillery Battalion and earned the good conduct medal, the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon and qualified as a sharpshooter.

After the war, he married Claudia Quirion and they shared nearly 56 years together. He worked at Togus as a mason until his retirement and then was self- employed as a mason. He also served the town of Manchester as a selectman. After his retirement, he was a daily visitor to the Flower Cart where he was always ready and willing to help where needed and where his presence will be missed.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His granddaughters and great-grandsons were the apples of his eye and he was theirs.

In his spare time, he enjoyed horse racing, football, watching the Red Sox and was an avid gardener. He took great pride in his gardens.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Charles, Clyde, Norman and Everett Arnold; two sisters, Dorothy Phillips and Mary Trask and his son-in-law, Paul Gagnon.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia; two daughters, Arlene Gagnon of Manchester, N.H., and Gail Arnold and her friend, David Popolizio, of Kennebunk; a sister, Janette Whitehouse, of Augusta; two granddaughters, Angela Gagnon and her fiancˇ, Steven Burroughs, of Manchester, N.H. and Jessica Gagnon, of Manchester., N.H.; and two great-grandsons, Alex and Dylan Burroughs.

A funeral service will be held at the Manchester Community Church, Route 17, Manchester, N.H., today at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ernest Johnson officiating.

Burial will be at the Maine Veterans Memorial (New) Cemetery.
