Ralph "Raoul" G. Gregoire
BIDDEFORD -- Ralph "Raoul" G. Gregoire, 74, of South Street, died Monday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000) at Southern Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Biddeford on Nov. 23, 1925, a son of John and Olivine Bisson Gregoire, and was educated at St. Andre's School.
Mr. Gregoire served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. His ship was torpedoed and sunk 20 miles off the coast of France on the third morning after D-Day, and he was again forced to leave his ship on the second D-Day, August 15, when German planes fired on it. He received shrapnel wounds and burned his hands while swimming in burning oil in the sea.
He worked in Connecticut, then was employed as a pipe fitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years. He also operated Gregoire's Oil Company in the 1960s and 1970s, then owned and operated the Water Street Market and Laundromat. He was also a landlord of buildings on Main, Water, Cleaves and Clifford streets.
He was a life member and past Post Commander of the Amvets, Merton Ira Staples Post No.1 in Biddeford. He was also a member of the DAV in Biddeford, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was active in Biddeford Democratic Party politics.
Mr. Gregoire enjoyed baseball, football, touring, riding and dining out.
A son, Gerard R., died June 16, 1961. A brother, Richard, died in 1963 and a sister, Lena, died in 1924.
Survivors include one son, John of Sanford; one daughter, Margaret Ann of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Aline Guay of Biddeford; one brother, Omer of Biddeford; one granddaughter and his companion of 32 years, Ramona Gagnon of Biddeford.
Valerie Hastings
KENNEBUNK -- Valerie Graff Hastings, 60, of the Boothby Road, died Saturday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000) in Morristown, Vt.
She was born Oct. 20, 1939 in St. Petersburg, Pa., the daughter of Dr. Gordon R. and Ruth Ziegler Graff, and was a 1961 graduate of Penn State with a BS in psychology and a minor in education.
She taught school for three years in Broward County, Fla. schools. She then went to UCLA and received her Master's in social work.
She was employed in hospitals in Los Angeles and New Jersey before coming to Maine in 1986, where she was employed with Counseling Services, Inc. in Kittery and then Jackson Brook Institute in South Portland. She retired in 1995.
Mrs. Hastings was a former member of the New Providence, N.J. Rescue Squad, serving as an EMT and Crew Chief. She enjoyed quilting, reading, studying French, traveling and playing the piano.
She was a member of the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport and the Academy of Certified Social Workers and was a Maine-licensed clinical social worker.
Survivors include her husband, Richard W. Hastings Sr. of Kennebunk; two sons, Richard W. Jr. of Merrimac, N.H. and Randall of Farmington, Conn. and two grandchildren, Devon and Owen.
Dorothy E. Popper
HOLLIS -- Dorothy E. Popper, 80, formerly of the Nichols Trailer Park, died Saturday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000) at the Barron Center in Portland.
She was born in Woolrich on June 8, 1919, was raised by her grandparents, William and Helen Rich, in the Buxton area and attended Buxton schools.
She worked for the Sebago Moc Company for more than16 years and retired from there. She had been a resident of Hollis since the early 1970s.
A 50-year member of Pinea Rebekah Lodge in Windham, she enjoyed gardening, visiting and reminiscing about times with her friends.
There are no known survivors.
Eleanor Romprey
NORTH WATERBORO -- Eleanor M. Romprey, 76, of Old Portland Road, died Sunday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000) at the Newton Center in Sanford.
She was born in Biddeford on June 19, 1923, the daughter of Jeffrey and Evelyn Sanborn Romprey, attended Biddeford schools and earned her GED in her late 60s.
Employed for more than 25 years at the former Howard Johnson's restaurant on the Maine Turnpike, she retired in 1985.
Among her favorite interests were playing bingo and doing word searches.
Survivors include one son, Wayne of North Waterboro; two sisters, Donna Labbe of Arundel and Rachel Googins of Portland; a brother, Merle of Kennebunk; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Joshua Rosen
KENNEBUNK -- Dr. Joshua Rosen, 86, of the Atria, died Friday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000) at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
He was born in The Bronx, N.Y. on Feb. 3, 1914, a son of Benjamin and Rebecca Kosofsky Rosen, and graduated from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School.
Dr. Rosen lived and worked in New York City and Bethpage, Long Island. He moved to Kennebunk several years ago.
His wife, Guita Rosen, died in January.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Johnson of Kennebunk; a sister, Edith of Miami; and a grandson, Andrew Johnson of Kennebunk.

CELINA, died Feb. 28, 2000 in Sanford. Visiting hours 7-9 p.m. today at the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Ignatius Church; spring burial in St. Ignatius Cemetery.

Leslie Bissett
LIMERICK -- Leslie W. "Buddy" Bissett, 86, formerly of Lynn, Mass. died Sunday (listed Tuesday, May 9, 2000) in Sanford.
He was born in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of Walter L. and Ollie M. (Rousse) Bissett, and was educated in Syracuse.
A jeweler in the Lynn area for 48 years, Mr. Bissett owned Bissett Jewelry in Central Square, Lynn and retired to Limerick in 1980.
During World War II, he served in the Army in Africa.
While in Lynn, he was a member of the First Christian Church.
He was a member of the Main Congregational Church, U.C.C., Limerick, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors; Golden Fleece Lodge of Masons, AF&AM, Lynn, where he served for many years as secretary and was a past master. He has been a member of all York and Scottish
Rite Bodies, past District Deputy Grand Master, and a member of Freedom Lodge #2 in Limerick. He has also been a member of the Beefeaters Steak Club #1, Lynn.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ruth (Berninger) Bissett of Limerick; two daughters, Susan Belair and Linda Roach, both of Lynn; a grandson, niece and nephew.
Justus Cobb
SACO -- Justus Cobb, 85, of Village Green died Thursday (listed Tuesday, May 9, 2000) at Evergreen Manor.
He was born in Saco on February 19, 1915, a son of Edgar J. and Esther Mercier Cobb.
He attended Saco schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1934. He was the captain of the football team and a member of the Glee Club while at Thornton Academy.
He worked for Swift and Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1969. He then worked for the United States Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector, retiring in 1982. He was a resident in Connecticut from 1956 to 1984, when he returned to Saco.
He attended the United Baptist Church in Saco. He was a member of the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church, Meriden, Connecticut, Scottish
Rite Valley of Portland and Saco Masonic Lodge. He belonged to Saco Historical Society.
Family members say he enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and traveling.
A son, Paul J. Cobb, died in 1973.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Jordan Cobb of Saco; one son, Edward B. Cobb of Pepperell, Mass.; one sister, Virginia Cobb Peary of Saco; two grandchildren, Nathaniel M. and Mary Alice Cobb both of Pepperell, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Edwina Davis
CAPE PORPOISE -- Edwina A. Davis, 92, of Main Street, died Thursday (listed Tuesday, May 9, 2000) at the Basford House in Biddeford.
She was born in Jonesport on July 7, 1907, the daughter of James and Mary (Tracy) Anderson. She graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School and received her teacher's certification from the University of Southern Maine.
Ms. Davis taught grade school in Kennebunkport and Wakefield, R.I. for over 40 years. She was a member of the Maine Teachers Association.
She was an active member of the community, holding membership in the Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine and the 50 Plus Club.
Ms. Davis was a member of the Church on the Cape.
She is survived by four nephews, Robert Stinson of Melbourne, Fla., Richard Anderson of Portland, Sherwood and James Prout, both of Lubec; two cousins, Bessie Clark and Maxine Cubbage, and several grand nieces and nephews.
L. Elizabeth Goldthwaite
BIDDEFORD -- L. Elizabeth Goldthwaite, 84, of South Street, Biddeford, died Sunday (listed Tuesday, May 9, 2000) at St. Andre Health Care Facility in Biddeford.
She was born in Biddeford, July 7, 1915, a daughter of Fred Elmer and Mary Catherine MacDonald Goldthwaite. She graduated from Biddeford High School in 1933.
She worked for Saco-Lowell Shops and First National Bank in Biddeford, retiring in 1980.
Miss Goldthwaite attended the Second Parish United Church of Christ in Biddeford.
A brother, Edward Goldthwaite, died in 1994.
She is survived by one brother, Chandler Goldthwaite of Saco and four nephews.
