Jerry Craig, 66
SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Jerry Everton Craig, 66, died Feb. 15, 2002 at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 17, 1935 in Northeast Harbor, the son of William Henry and Harriett Josephine (Gott) Craig.
He graduated from Pemetic High School and attended Williams School of Banking. He also served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was the Republican chairman of Southwest Harbor, past director of chamber of commerce, former selectmen of Southwest Harbor. He worked at Erin Corp., Ellsworth Holiday Inn and has been a small business owner and banker, and was a member of the American Legion. He was most proud of being cofounder and past president of the Harbor House and cofounder and chairman of the Southwest Harbor Housing Authority for 25 years.
He was proud of his contributions to the communities on MDI by working to help finance the dreams of fishermen, small business owners and families during his tenure in banking.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Karen (Hopper) Craig of Southwest Harbor; two sons, Scott and his wife Suzanne of Kennebunk and Jim of Southwest Harbor; one daughter, Jennie and her fiancˇ Dudley Poirier of Bass Harbor and Tennessee; and two very special grandchildren, Mike and Betsy of Kennebunk.
A memorial service was held Sunday at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mt. Desert. Spring Interment will be at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor.

John Day, 72
MANLIUS, N.Y. - John B. Day, 72, of Manlius, New York, died at home Feb. 9, 2002.
He was born in Biddeford Maine. He lettered in four sports and graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1948.
He worked for Reg Libby as a plumber and he also worked at the Unitarian Church in Kennebunk where he stoked the fire and rang the bell.
In 1956 he and his family moved to Manlius, New York. He was employed as a plumber for Morgan Badgley & Company for 33 years. After retirement he worked as a custodian at the First Baptist Church in Manlius.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Mary Lou Casselberry; five daughters, Gloria Allen of West Chazy, New York, Kimberly Wittwer of Minoa, New York, Heidi Day of Manlius, New York Amanda Wolfanger of DeWitt, New York, and Katrina Collins of Ferndale, Michigan; two sons, Millett of Lyman, and Richard of DeWitt, New York; a brother, Robert Pelletier of Arundel,; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

George Lowery, 83
KENNEBUNK - George Leroy Lowery, 83, a resident of High Street, Kennebunk, died the morning of Feb. 12, 2002 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
He was born Sept. 11, 1918 in Houlton, a son of Leroy and Pearl (McAtee) Lowrey, and attended schools in Houlton and Kennebunk.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in World War II.
He married Rita B. Fortier in 1938. She died Oct. 29, 2001.
He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker, doing work he took great pride in for 38 years, retiring in 1978.
He enjoyed his camp at Wilson Lake, fly fishing, working his hunting dogs, and time spent with friends and family. He will be missed.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Lowrey of Saco; and one grandson, Mark David Lowrey.
A spring graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Alfred Paresson, 60
PITTSFIELD, Maine -Alfred E. Paresson, 60, died suddenly Feb. 10, 2002, at Maine General Medical Center in Waterville.
He was the son of Charles and Caroline (Muller) Paresson of South Portland. He was born Nov. 30, 1941 in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada.
After high school, he was in the Marine Reserve. He was employed as a hand-sewer for several local shoe companies including Dexter Shoe.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He resided and was married in Pittsfield, Maine.
Survivors are his wife, Avis (Ames), of 40 years; four daughters, Cheryl Austin of Boxford, Mass., (formerly of Wells) and husband Bradley, Susan McGurrin of Hanover, Mass. and husband Garrett, Kimberly Paresson and her fiancˇ, Michael Brown, of Heber City, Utah, and Kristie Paresson of Unity, Maine; one brother, Paul of Channel View, Texas; one sister, Betty Hethcoat of South Portland; seven grandchildren, Kayla, Abigail, Rachel and Meghan of Hanover, Mass., Courtland and Macy of Boxford, Mass., and Harper of Heber City, Utah; sister-in-law, Glenna Proctor of Newport, Maine; one brother-in-law, Lauris Ames and wife Mary Jane of Hudson, N.H.; several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at Shorey Funeral Home, Pittsfield, Maine. Graveside service will be in late spring.

Annie Smith, 78
WELLS - Annie M. Smith (Old Faithful), 78, of Littlefield Road, passed away quietly Feb. 15, 2002 in York Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born March 12, 1923, in Cape Neddick, a daughter of George and Edna (Perkins) Freeman. She attended schools in Cape Neddick then worked for several shoe companies until the early '70s when she stayed home to care for her husband, Joe Smith, until his death in 1979.
She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and her "CB friends." She was one of the sweetest people you would ever want to know.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. Smith Sr.; one son, Richard and infant daughter, Florence, two sisters, Evelyn Freeman and Mariah Griswald.
Surviving are one son, Joseph F. Smith Jr. of Wells; three daughters, Georgia Wyman and Patricia Bartley of Wells and Joanne Webber of Springvale; four brothers, Paul and Haven Freeman of York, Leonard and Roy Freeman of Wells; one sister, Louise Hausenfluck of St. Petersburg, Fla.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Bethel Christian Church, North Berwick with the Rev. Robert G. Cole Sr. officiating. Spring Interment in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Luke Vaganis, 80
KENNEBUNK - Luke Vaganis, 80 , a resident of Kennebunk, formerly of Lynn and Hamilton, Mass., died Feb. 14, 2002 in Biddeford Maine after a brief illness.
A Native of Lynn, Mass., he graduated from English High School of Lynn the class of 1939.
He was a self-employed auto mechanic at Luke's Wyoma Mobil Station in Lynn and later at Luke's Auto Repair and Sales of Lynn and then Salem, Mass., for more than 35 years.
He served in the Army during World War II, engaging in the assault landing on D-Day on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. He drove an amphibious duck in spearhead operations engaging in beach landings and river crossing. He was awarded five bronze stars for the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes. He also received a bronze arrowhead and Presidential Unit Citation for participating in the D-Day landing.
He was past member of the Loins Club, the chamber of commerce of Lynn and also was a member of the St. George Church of Lynn.
He was happiest when helping others. He loved children.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie (Hudson) Vaganis of Kennebunk; one son, Charles Vaganis of Portland; one daughter, Joan Plummer of Hamilton, Mass.; one brother, Anthony Vaganis of Lynn, Mass.; one sister, Felicia Drinkwater of Swampscott, Mass.; three grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Tuesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Thomas French Jr. 87
KENNEBUNKPORT - Thomas E. French Jr., 87, a resident of Goose Rocks Road, Kennebunkport, formerly of Rocky Hill, Conn., and Amherst, Mass., died Jan. 17, 2002 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a brief illness.
He was born in East Hartford, Conn. on Jan. 11, 1915, a son of Thomas E. and Claudia Cushman French Sr. He graduated from Wethersfield (Conn.) High School.
He was employed by the Colt Industries of Hartford, Conn. as supervisor as a skilled metal polisher for 10 years.
He was married to Georgia E. Perkins in 1948 in Springfield, Mass. In the early '50s they were was co-owners of Lily Bay House and Cabins in Moosehead Lake, Maine and then they moved back to Springfield, Mass. where he was employed by the Spaulding Sporting Goods in Chicopee, Mass. and they moved to Amherst, Mass. where he was also employed by the U-Mass at Amherst as supervisor in the maintenance department for 20 years. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Kennebunkport, in 1985.
He was a former member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst where he and his wife were youth church leaders in the '60s and the '70s.
He was a member and former deacon of the First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport.
He was a 63-year member and Past Master of the former Stepney Lodge of Wethersfield and Rocky Hill, Conn. and member and chaplain of the Arundel Lodge 76 of Kennebunkport. He served on the zoning board of appeals of Kennebunkport for several years
He was a former Certified Maine Guide.
He was an avid gardener, fisherman and all around outdoorsman.
He had just proudly completed four years in the pulmonary exercise program at UNE in Biddeford.
He was predeceased by his twin brother and sister Howard and Hope French, a brother Paul French and a sister Carol Signorelli.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Georgia P. French of Kennebunkport; one daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Jan F.) Dicey of Exeter, N.H.; four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Patterson of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Ethel Lombardo of Middletown, Conn., Mrs. Jeanne Creighton of Tavares, Fla., and Mrs. Paula Lattanzio of Rockville, Conn.; and three god-daughters, Kathy Byce of Ariz., Christine Bouchard Brown of Sturbridge, Mass., and Jennifer Chartier of Westfield, Mass.; three step-grandchildren; three step-great -grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several grand-nieces and nephews.
The Masonic Services and memorial services will be held later date. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Arthur Coleman 76
SANFORD - Arthur W. Coleman, 76, of Prospect Street in North Berwick, died Jan. 16, 2002 at the Greenwood Center.
He was born Dec. 2, 1925 in North Berwick, a son of Harry and Mildred (Hatch) Coleman, and attended schools there.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a gunner, second mate, on a P.T. boat in the South Pacific.
For many years he had been employed by the North Berwick Lumber Company and worked for Howard Construction. He retired from School Administrative District 60, where he had been a custodian.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. After retirement, he enjoyed woodcrafts and made them for family and friends. He was a member of the Quint-Cheney Post American Legion in North Berwick and the Maine Trappers Association.
His wife, Esther Reed Coleman, died in 1981. A sister, Ruth Coleman Chadbourne, also died previously.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Goodman and Gail, both of North Berwick; one brother, Lewis of Sanford; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Doris Lander, 81
CAMDEN - Doris Mary (Hutchins) Lander, 81, died Jan. 12, 2002 at Shore Village Nursing Center in Rockland.
Born in Kittery on Nov. 24, 1920, she was the daughter of Ralph and Beverly Hutchins. She married Gilbert A. Lander in Kittery in 1938.
She moved from Kittery to Camden in 1997 to be near her daughter and had resided at Sixty Three Washington St. for two years. She had been a communicant of St. Rayfield's Catholic Church in Kittery for many years. She enjoyed her family and watching her grandchildren grow. She loved to walk and be near the water, expecially spending time at West Pond.
Surviving is one daughter, Beverly Nolan and her husband, James of Camden; two brothers, Raymond Hutchins and his wife, Jackie of Berwick, Ernest Hutchins and his wife, Lee of Lantana, Fla.; four grandchildren, Chris Nolan and his wife Heidi, Jennifer Shotwell and her husband Chris of Camden and Sharlene Lander and todd Lander, both of Kittery; three great-grandchildren, Nyle, Aaron and Hannah Nolan, who always made her smile, all of Camden.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert A. Lander who died in 1997 and her son, Gilbert Lander who died in 1988.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 7 Union St., Camden with the Rev. Eugene Gaffey officiating. Spring burial will be in Orchard Grove Cemetry in Kittery. Arrangements are witht he Robert E. Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden.

Gertrude Anderson, 90
FALMOUTH - Gertrude Sanborn Anderson, 90, a resident of Falmouth by the Sea, formerly of Moody, died Feb. 1, 2002 at her residence following a long illness.
She was born in South Portland, May 27, 1911, a daughter of Daniel A. and Mildred (Runnels) Sanborn.
She was a member of the York/Ogunquit Methodist Church and also belonged to the Cumberland Temple Pythians Sisters, Wells Historical Society, the Mary Martha Circle and worked at the Ogunquit Publicity Bureau for a number of years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard J. Anderson, and also her son Bernard J. Anderson, both in 1964.
She is survived by two sisters, Wenona Cook of Moody and Muriel Patrick of South Gardner; several nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A graveside service will be held this spring at the Forest City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.
