Ethel Freeman, 87
KENNEBUNK - Ethel Lovgren Freeman, 87, died at the Renaissance Nursing Home in Biddeford, on June 10.
She was born in Boston, Mass., on Sept. 25, 1913.
She was a longtime resident of Hanover, N.H. and lived for the past two years in Kennebunk.
She was a Red Cross volunteer in World War II, a Girl Scout leader in Hanover, N.H., and active in the New Hampshire Federation of Women's Clubs.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Greydon C. Freeman of Biddeford; one son, Greydon C. Freeman of Woodbridge, Conn.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Four sisters and three brothers predeceased her.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m., in the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.

R. Evelyn Gerry, 81
SPRINGVALE - R. Evelyn Gerry, 81, of Springvale, died the morning of June 13, at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.
She was born on Jan. 2, 1920, in Springvale. She was the daughter of Almon and Margaret (Carson) Farwell of Springvale. She attended Sanford schools and graduated from Sanford High School. On Sept. 14, 1940, she married her husband of 60 years Arthur M. Gerry.
All her life, she volunteered her time to help out others. Whether it was her 20 plus years of service to local nursing homes, teaching Sunday school at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, or visiting those who could not leave home; she dedicated herself to helping those in need. She was a member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She enjoyed gardening, crafting, and traveling in her spare time.
Two brothers, Newton and Clyde Farwell predecease her.
Surviving is her husband, Arthur of Springvale; one daughter, Joyce Iles of Moody; two grandchildren, Susan Benuck of Durham, N.H., Steven Iles of Rochester, N.H.; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Zachary Benuck; one sister, Gertrude Fletcher of Springvale; and one brother, Warren Farwell of Sanford.
A funeral service was held Friday at the Heald Funeral Home, Springvale. Burial followed at Riverside cemetery in Springvale. The Rev. Dennis Reeves officiated.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Gerry's memory to the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, 4-6 Pleasant St., Springvale, ME 04083.
H. Elisabeth Spier
KENNEBUNKPORT - H. Elisabeth Spier, of Kennebunkport, died June 14.
She was the widow of Robert D. Spier.
She was a retired physician, who specialized in anesthesiology, practicing under the name, H. Elisabeth Cherry, M.D. She received her bachelor's degree from Connecticut College, a medical doctor's degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, and served an Anesthesiology Fellowship at Lahey Clinic, Boston.
Survivors include one son, Peter Spier; and two nephews, Thomas and David Cherry.
A graveside service was held Monday at the Enfield Cemetery, Enfield, Conn.
Arrangements were by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
Francesca Merrill, 73
KENNEBUNK - Francesca P. Merrill, 73, a resident of Ross Road, formerly of Kennebunkport and Marblehead, Mass., died May 22, at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Boston, Mass., a daughter of Maguerita Christina Ginn and Col. James Bernard Patterson, U.S.A., (Calvary). She grew up on various Army posts, moving to Chevy Chase Md. in 1940. She attended Holton Arms School, graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1946, and attended Montgomery Junior College.
She then moved to Boston, where she worked at the Museum of Science and the Registrars Office of Harvard College.
She moved to Kennebunkport in 1960, and became an active volunteer with River Tree Arts and Graves Memorial Library.
She was a talented artist, prodigious reader, especially of English history.
Wherever she went, she was accompanied by her beloved West Highland White Terrier, "Bubbles."
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. H. Willis (Sally) Day of Kennebunk Beach, Mrs. William M. (Virginia) Moser and Mrs. Solomon (Pat) Goldberg of Midlothian, Va.; five nephews; four nieces; eight great-nieces; and six great-nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk in August. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
Anita Upton, 88
KENNEBUNK - Anita H. Upton, 88, a resident of Penny Lane, Kennebunk, formerly of Sedgwick, Maine, died June 5 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
She was born in Nashua, N.H. on Feb. 1, 1913, a daughter of Arthur C. and Jessie E. (Clement) Herbert. She graduated from Nashua High School, class of 1931 and also graduated from Nashua Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1934. Following her schooling, she was employed by the Nashua Memorial Hospital, She also was a private duty nurse for several years.
In 1935, she married Linwood Upton, and in 1938 they moved to Maine where she worked for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She also worked as the office nurse for their family physician.
Enjoying a lifelong love of music, she, together with her late husband, played in the Nashua Symphony Orchestra. She played violin and banjo mandelin, and her husband the bass fiddle.
She also enjoyed camping, traveling and crafts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Linwood Upton, who died in 1999 and her sister Arlene Foss.
She is survived by one son, Dr. David Upton of Wells; two daughters, Donna Shackelford of Bangor, and Linda Dizmang of Kennewick, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A private Memorial Service will be held Friday at the Wells Branch Baptist Church, Wells. Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Madeline Bartlett, 79
KENNEBUNK - Madeline A. "Mimi" (Tufts) Bartlett, 79, resident of Fleming Court in Kennebunk, died June 6, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a long illness.
She was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Kennebunk, a daughter of Charles and Florence (Clark) Otis. She attended schools in Kennebunk.
She was employed for 35 years by Kesslen Shoe Company of Kennebunk.
She was a life long resident of Kennebunk and was a member of Kennebunk Baptist Church. She enjoyed rug hooking and crocheting afghan blankets and also enjoyed riding about on her moped.
She mostly enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Bartlett, who died in 1980, and two sisters, Gertrude Gregoire and Virginia McLaughlin.
She is survived by three sons, John Tufts of Kennebunk, David Tufts of Arundel and Wayne Tufts of Cape Coral, Fla.; one daughter, Cathy Reim of Kennebunk; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Friday in Hope Cemetery, Portland Road, Kennebunk with Pastor Rick Leach officiating. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Lucy Chittick, 96M
SCARBOROUGH - A Memorial Graveside Service will be held for Lucy (Brand Wentworth) Chittick, 96, a resident of Pine Point, formerly of Oak Leaf Terrace retirement Village in Freeport, at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Arundel Cemetery, North Street Kennebunkport.
Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
Edith Pickett, 84
NORTH BERWICK - Edith C. Pickett, 84, of Wells Street, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, in Wentworth-Douglas Hospital June 10, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born May 3, 1917, in North Berwick, daughter of Wilbert and Isabella (Andrews) Chadbourne. She was raised on the Chadbourne farm in the Bauneg Beg section of North Berwick. She graduated co-valedictorian of her class at North Berwick High School in 1935.
She had a flair for comedy and was in many plays and skits at the Bauneg Bag Grange. She was a Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher at the First Congregational Church, where she was a member and belonged to Madisses Class. She had been president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Past Master of the Bauneg Beg Grange and member of the Historical Society and Republican Town Club in North Berwick.
For many years, she was the local correspondent for the York County Coast Star as well as the Journal Tribune, writing special interest stories.
Over the years, she worked at the Goodall Mills, various stores in town and the school hot lunch program. In 1996, she retired as registrar of voters for the town after 32 years of service.
On Oct. 20, 2000, she and her husband, Robert, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They had lived in their home, the Thomas Hobbs Jr. Hostelry, for 60 years. She had a great love for her family and community. She will be remembered for her warm personality and sense of humor.
She was pre-deceased by her sister, Ella Chadbourne, and son-in-law, Anthony Waszkielewicz Jr.
Surviving are her husband, Robert; two sons, Spencer and his wife, Gloria Pickett of Wells, Maine and Vero Beach, Fla., Blaine and his wife, Carole Pickett of Nashville, Tenn.; one daughter, Mrs. Walter (Andrea) Lovell of Somersworth, N.H.; one brother, Cecil Chadbourne of Sanford; a 100-year-old Aunt Florence Dever of Providence, R.I.; seven grandchildren, Danielle, Christina, Kimberly, Robert, Lisa, Matthew and Andrew; four great-grandchildren, Ian, Isabella, Spencer and Sophia; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Grange Service at 6 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. A funeral will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in North Berwick with Rev. Gerald Scribner officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

Jean Pineo, 86
KENNEBUNK - Jean Donald Pineo, 86, a resident of Atria Kennebunk, passed away June 5 after a long illness.
She was born and brought up in Dongan Hills, Staten Island, New York, daughter of Mabel and Albert Edward Paterson. She attended Dongan Hall on Staten Island and Kings Hall, Compton, Quebec, Canada and McDonald College, Montreal.
She was employed by the Foster Travel Service as a travel agent in charge of various offices located in the Northeast and in Canada. She married Charles C. Pineo Jr. in New Brighton, Staten Island, on Jan. 12, 1946.
She and her husband lived both in Searsmont and Belfast, Maine, before moving to West Falmouth in 1960 where they resided until moving to Kennebunkport in 1973. She was active in community affairs having served on the board of directors of the Children's Home in Belfast, the Sweetser Children's Home in Saco, as well as serving on various committees of the Home for the Aged, Portland and the Portland YWCA. As a member of the Maine Antique Dealers Association, she participated in antique shows throughout New England and maintained a shop, the Goose Hangs High, at her home which, as a fun time hobby, was open only by chance and appointment.
She traveled extensively abroad browsing for antiques and collectibles.
A communicant of St. David's Episcopal Church, Kennebunk, she was a dedicated volunteer in its Budget Box, a church related consignment shop.
She is survived by her husband; one son, Charles C. Pineo III of Woodstock, Ga.; one daughter, Susan Donald Stowbridge of South Tamworth, N.H.; and five grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Belfast. Arrangements are by Bibber Funeral Home, Kennebunk.
Heather Cowan, 66
KENNEBUNK - Heather M. Cowan, 66, a resident of Cole Road, died the morning of Aug. 16, 2001 at Bradford Commons after a long illness.
She was born Dec. 31, 1934 in New York City, a daughter of William and Jessica (Dunbar) Ray, and was a graduate of Washington Irving High School in New York, N.Y. and Katherine Gibbs School, also in New York.
She was employed by the National Association of Manufacturers, Hertz International Car Rental and Matthew Lifflander Esq. of New York, N.Y. as an executive assistant, also as an executive assistant in Washington, D.C. for Malasian Tin Bureau and a travel agent for Metro World Travel. She was most recently employed as an office clerk for the York County Coast Star.
She moved to Kennebunk 14 years ago; she enjoyed photography.
Survivors are her husband, of 35 years Francis (Frank) Cowan of Kennebunk; three step-daughters, Sandra Reber of Embreville, Pa., Cynthia Dohrmann of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Karen Van Scoyk of Steam Boat Springs, Colo.; and four grandchildren.
There will be no services. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Elizabeth Coolidge, 75
YORK - Elizabeth Winsor (Smith) Coolidge, 75, died peacefully Aug. 19, 2001 at York Hospital of complications from a stroke.
Born Aug. 29, 1925 at Phillips House in Boston to Robert Winsor and Susan (Baker) Winsor, she was raised in Weston, Mass. Her grandfather, Robert Winsor, was a partner of Kidder Peabody in Boston; her aunt, Mary P. Winsor, founded the Winsor School; her uncle, Frederick Winsor, founded the Middlesex School.
She attended Winsor School, Sandia School in Albuquerque, Radcliffe College, and Vesper George Art School. She was known as "Diddy."
She married Thomas Learning Smith Jr., an advertising copywriter, of Philadelphia in 1945; they had four daughters, Susan Revere Smith, Natalie Brinton Smith, Elizabeth Winsor Smith and Lydia Leaming Smith. The family lived in Belvedere, Calif. until the death of Mr. Smith in 1959 of multiple sclerosis.
Married Hallowell Vaughan Morgan III, an insurance executive of Manchester, Mass., in 1961; this marriage ended in divorce in 1969. She married Arthur William Coolidge, a sculptor and woodworker in 1981; they made their home in York.
A lifelong artist, she was a board member of the York Art Association. Her watercolors of the seacoast were well known; she also operated a business designing house portraits and notecards for hundreds of customers. She was a member of the Junior League and the Vincent Club.
She leaves her husband, William; one sister and brother-in-law, Faith Winsor Goldfinger and Peter Goldfinger of London England; four daughters, Susan S. Talbot of Essex, Mass., Natalie B. Smith of White River Junction, Vt., Elizabeth S. Sterling and her husband, James A. Sterling of South Freeport, and Lydia S. Perkins and her husband, Thomas H. Perkins of Ipswich, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Samantha Lowell Talbot and Charles Meredith Talbot III of Essex, Mass., Peter Avery Sterling, Thomas Archer Sterling, James Bull Sterling and Henry Winsor Sterling of South Freeport, and Thomas Leaming Perkins and Robert Handasyd Perkins, both of Ipswich, Mass.
She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Winsor of Marion, Mass. and her sister, Edith Winsor Coxe of Brunswick, Maine; nine nieces and nephews, Pippa Goldfinger and Antonia Goldfinger of England, Robert Winsor Coxe of Atlanta, Louis Osborne Coxe of Boston, Charles Shearman Coxe of Brunswick and Helen Coxe Cheney of Cumberland, Robert Winsor of Wilton, Conn., Pamela Winsor Brindamour of Rockport, Mass. and Deborah Winsor Conley of Bedford, Mass.; as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in her honor will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York, Maine. Arrangements are by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.
