Doris Whelchel
WEST BUXTON - Doris J. Whelchel, 58, died at home Saturday (listed Tuesday, December 1, 1998).
She was born Nov. 20, 1940 in Portland, a daughter of Irvin H. and Virginia E. Cleaves McGlinchey. She was raised on Peaks Island where she attended school, and was a member of Brackett Memorial Church.
After graduating from Portland High School, she enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alabama, where she met her husband, whom she married in Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Whelchel was a West Buxton resident for the past 10 years, and was a member of the Buxton United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed ceramics, animals, and loved to be around people, survivors say.
Survivors include her husband, Lon Whelchel of West Buxton; three sons, Eric of Pa., Keith and Greg of West Buxton; a sister, Barbara McGlinchey Roberts of Portland; and a grandson.
John Brown
WELLS - John P. Brown, 84, of Littlefield Road, died Monday (listed Tuesday, October 5, 1999) at Maine Stay Nursing Home in Sanford.
He was born Nov. 17, 1914 in Bangor, a son of Charles Ernest and Mabel Louise Gott Brown, and attended Wells schools.
A lifelong Wells resident, he married Lida Phillips Brown in 1933.
Known locally as a hard worker since the age of 7, he was employed as a janitor at the Division 3 School on Eldridge Road, delivered ice, vegetables and wood and was a winter herdsman for Beach Farms and Shady Nook Farm, and raised Hereford cattle on his own farm. He also plowed roads during the winter and operated his own cement contracting business for many years.
During World War II, he served as an air raid warden.
He was a member of the Wells Beach Hose Company and the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society and enjoyed bird

Two brothers, Harry and Charles, and a sister, Eleanor Wildes, have passed away.
Survivors include his wife of Wells; two sons, John P. Jr. and Ronald W., both of Wells; three daughters, Marion B. Noble and Ann B. Godin, both of Wells, and Beth Moffett of Freeport, Fla.; one brother, Carl E. of Wells; three sisters, Lillian Chase and Mary Coggeshall, both of Wells, and Doris Clogston of Ogunquit; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Deanna Cloutier
SANFORD - Denaan M. Cloutier, 57, of Devotion Avenue, died at home Sunday (listed Tuesday, October 5, 1999) after a battle with cancer.
She was born Dec. 29, 1941 in Springvale, a daughter of Peter and Roseanne Arsenault Dwyer, and attended Sanford and Springvale schools. She had lived in the area all of her life.
Mrs. Cloutier was a communciant of Notre Dame Church in Springvale.
She enjoyed playing bingo, listening to music, singing and dancing. One of her favorite pastimes was reading scary books and watching scary movies, family members say. She also enjoyed spending time at the family camp in Shapleigh.
She had a great love for children, survivors say, and was known as the neighborhood babysitter.
Survivors include two sons, Peter Deyo of Sanford and Richard of Springvale; two daughters, Luanne Karwanski and Sandra Nolan, both of Sanford; a brother, David Dwyer of Chester, N.H.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Madeleine Lemay
SANFORD - Madeleine B. Lemay, 73, of High Street, died Sunday (listed Tuesday, October 5, 1999) at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She was born May 21, 1926 in Troy, Vt., a daughter of Aime and Blanche Bouffard Thereault, and was educated in Vermont and, after moving to Sanford at age 13, at the former Holy Family School.
Mrs. Lemay was a homemaker and worked at the former Goodall-Sanford textile mills, Kesslen Shoe in Kennebunk, Dover (N.H.) Shoe, Allied Shoe and Novelty of Springvale, Universal Shoe of Sanford, Sanford Shoe, Corey Shoe and Augat, retiring in 1988.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting, cooking and her flower garden.
She was a communicant of Holy Family Church.
Her husband, Gaston Lemay, died in 1992.
Survivors include her mother of Sanford; a daughter, Paulette Treadwell of Acton; two sons, Donald B. of Shapleigh and Roger of Sanford; a sister, Estelle Fluet of Sanford; a brother, Roland Thereault of Biddeford; and six grandsons.
Gwendolyn Mitchell
OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Gweldolyn Germain Mitchell, 62, of Saco Avenue, died at home Sunday (listed Tuesday, October 5, 1999).
She was born Dec. 1, 1936 in Biddeford, a daughter of Amos and Marilyn Fletcher Turner, and was a 1955 graduate of Portland High School.
Mrs. Mitchell owned and operated Funny Farm Antiques in Milton, N.H. She was also a buyer for Revlon Cosmetics at Dover (N.H.) Drug and spent many years working as a nurse at various nursing homes in the Rochester and Dover areas.
Her favorite season was autumn and her hobby was collecting lighthouse memorabilia. She loved to spend time with children, grandchildren and friends, survivors say.
A son, Clifford P. Germain III, and a brother, Lloyd Turner, have passed away.
Survivors include three sons, Michael P. Germain of Old Orchard Beach, Timothy R. Germain of Colebrook, N.H., and Matthew Germain of New Brunswick, Canada
; three daughters, Kathleen (Mrs. Jeffrey) Martin of Old Orchard Beach, Mary (Mrs. Rob) Patt of Arundel and Anne Marie Melendez of Old Orchard Beach; two brothers, Robert Turner of North Berwick and David Turner of Liberty, S.C.; a sister, Marilyn Stauffer of Palmetto, Fla.; six grandchidlren and several nieces and nephews.
Gertrude Curran
SPRINGVALE - Gertrude C. Curran, 60, of Indian Ledge Road, died Wednesday (listed Tuesday, October 5, 1999) at Southern New Hampshire Regional Medical Center in Nashua, N.H.
She was born Feb. 11, 1939 in Bar Harbor, a daughter of Walter and Margaret Muschero Curran.
She was a nurse for the elderly at 75 State Street in Portland for many years, and at age 55 she returned to school and received a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Survivors include two sons, Michael of Londonderry, N.H. and Matthew of Somersworth, N.H.; a daughter, Rebecca of Dover, N.H.; a sister, Sherry Major of Lewiston; and five grandchildren.
Lucienne Tardiff
BIDDEFORD - Lucienne Tardiff, 73, of Dental Avenue, died Monday (listed Tuesday, October 5, 1999) at Mercy Hospital in Portland.
She was born April 20, 1926 in Biddeford, a daughter of Arthur and Argena Bedard Beaulieu, and was educated in Biddeford schools.
On April 12, 1947 she married Gerard Tardiff at St. Andre's Church.
Mrs. Tardiff was employed at Pepperell Mills for four years and for a few years at the Biddeford-Saco Journal Tribune.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Church.
Mrs. Tardiff enjoyed playing beano, fellowship with her family and dining out.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years of Biddeford; a daughter, Mona Gervais of North Berwick; two sons, Donald of Waterboro and Ivan of Scarborough; a sister, Etiennette (Mrs. Jean Paul) Martel of Biddeford; three brothers, Robert Beaulieu of Biddeford and Armand and Roland Beaulieu, both of Saco; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Celina Fortier
SANFORD -- Celina Fortier, 90, formerly of Main Street, died Monday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000) at the Newton Center.
She was born in Ashland on April 25, 1909, the daughter of John and Mary (Pelletier) Theriault, and attended Ashland and Sanford schools.
She was employed for about 20 years at the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills.
Mrs. Fortier was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church. A devoutly religious lady, she was also a member of the Ladies of Ste. Anne, the Altar Society, The Propagation of the Faith, The Confraternity of the Precious Blood, The Marianist Spiritual Alliance, The Franciscan Missionary Union and The Little Flower Society.
She was active in her parish as well, having received several gifts of thanks from former pastors. She also made jewelry in her home.
Her husband, Willie E. Fortier, died in 1965.
She is survived by a brother, George Theriault of Sanford, and several nieces and nephews.
Donald Fournier
SACO -- Donald A. Fournier, 60, of Storer Street, died at home Sunday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000).
He was born in Somersworth, N.H. on April 12, 1939, a son of Alexander and Eva Vanasse Fournier, and was educated in Somersworth schools.
Mr. Fournier served with the U.S. Coast Guard.
He had been employed with the Biddeford Fire Dept. from 1968 to 1973, retiring due to ill health.
He was a member of the Biddeford Eagles and the Rochambeau Club and enjoyed stock car racing.
His wife, Jeannine A. Gagnon Fournier, died on March 6, 1974.
Surviving are a daughter, Caroline (Mrs. Scott) Lachance of Biddeford; two stepdaughters, Donna Rae Bouthot of North Berwick and Theresa Bouthot of Biddeford; two stepsons, Robert A. Bouthot and Richard Bouthot, both of Biddeford; two brothers, Norman of Wells and Louis of Somersworth; three sisters, Rachel Moreau of Rochester, N.H., Pauline Bisson of Somersworth and Lorraine Giguere of Gonic, N.H.; two grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Nancy Gibson
KENNEBUNK -- Nancy Etherington Gibson, 84, of Huntington Common, formerly of Fortunes Rocks, died Sunday (listed Tuesday, February 29, 2000) at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
She was born Feb. 1, 1916 in New York City, a daughter of Sandford G. and Dorothy (McKinney) Etherington, graduated in 1933 from The Brearley School in New York and received her bachelor's degree from Vassar College in 1937.
She moved to Fortunes Rocks from West Hartford, Conn. in 1969, summering in Maine and wintering in West Palm Beach, Fla.
A volunteer at the former Webber Hospital in Biddeford, she had been named Volunteer of the Year by the University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
She was a member of St. Philips by the Sea Church in Fortunes Rocks.
A woman with a great sense of humor, Mrs. Gibson was an accomplished tennis player and enjoyed knitting, reading,
needlepoint
and surfing the Internet.
Her first husband, Richard W. Banfield, died in 1963. Two brothers and a sister have also passed away.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, John R. Gibson of Kennebunk; one son, Richard Banfield of South Portland; two daughters, Becky Banfield Jordan of Orrington and Polly Banfield Nodden of Eastford, Conn.; one sister, Dorothy Etherington of Asheville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren
