Eleanor Doody, 83

KENNEBUNK - Eleanor Veronica Doody, 83, resident of Kensington Drive in Kennebunk, died Oct. 10, 2001 at River Ridge in Kennebunk. after a long illness.

She was born Aug. 28, 1918 in Cambridge, Mass., a daughter of David and Margaret (Tobin) Rogers. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School with the class of 1936 and graduated from Fisher Business School in Boston in 1938.

She held various secretary and stenographer positions in a variety of government agencies including the Department of the Navy, Government Accounting Office, Social Security Administration office, Environmental Protection Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as well as with several legal firms. She retired at the age of 80 from the Melrose, Massachusetts Chapter of the American Red Cross where she served as Transportation Coordinator for 16 years.

She had lived in Cambridge, Somerville and most recently Malden, Mass. before moving to Kennebunk, in May of 2000.

She enjoyed following politics and also enjoyed reading.

She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret P. "Peggy" Anderson of Kennebunk, Eleanor V. O'Connor of Wells, and Sheila P. Kenneally of Marshfield, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Lindsey, Ryan and Sean Kenneally all of Marshfield, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Mary's Church, in Wells with Rev. Joseph Ford officiating. Interment followed in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, Melrose Chapter, 786 Main St., Melrose, MA 02176 in Mrs. Doody's memory.

Jean C. Leonard

KENNEBUNKPORT - Jean C. Leonard died suddenly at her home on Oct. 13, 2001.

She was born in Arlington, Mass., a daughter of Peter and Mary McDonough.

She worked for many years at WBZ radio in

Boston as music librarian and continuity director. After raising a family, she worked in the development offices at Fontbonne College and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Surviving, are her husband of 45 years, Douglas G. Leonard; four sons, Bradford of Lawrenceville, Ga., Douglas of St. Louis, Mo., John of Scarborough and Stephen of South Portland; six grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Rosso of McClean, Va.; and one brother, Richard McDonough of Atlanta, Ga.

She was very active in the Kennebunkport community. She volunteered with the Graves Memorial Library, where she once worked in the children's department. She was also active with the Kennebunkport Historical Society, Twigs, senior luncheons, Elder Elves for the Senior Center at Lower Village, and the Arundel Yacht Club. A gathering of family and friends will take place at The Senior Center at Lower Village in Kennebunk on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Department at Graves Memorial Library or to The Senior Center at Lower Village.

Armand Lessard, 78

SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Armand Arthur Lessard, 78, of Southborough, Mass. and Bradenton, Fla., died Oct. 10, 2001 at Metro-West Medical Center-Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, Mass. after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Helen Lois (Weldon) Lessard; one son, Armand Arthur Lessard Jr. of West Kennebunk; two daughters, Jill L. Brennon of Southborough, Mass. and Jacqueline A. Simpson of Salem, mass.; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was born in Marlborough, Mass., son of the late Alphonse and Adeline (Gelinas) Lessard and has lived in Kennebunk, Bradenton, Fla., and Southborough, Mass.

He was a 1940 graduate of Marlborough High School and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II.

He owned and operated a school bus company for several years taking children to Marian High School in Framingham and to St. John's High School in Shrewsbury, Mass. He also was a supervisor for more than 30 years with the former New England Telephone Company in Framingham/Natick before retiring in 1983.

He also was a polio survivor.

A memorial service was held Monday in the John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., Marlborough, Mass. Burial at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Marlborough.

Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Intensive Care Unit at Metro-West Medical Center-Leonard Morse Hospital, c/o Beth Donnelly, 67 Union St., Natick, MA 01760.

Frederick Pettingill Sr.

WELLS - Frederick C. Pettingill Sr. of Wells, Maine and Naples, Fla., formerly of Lewiston, Maine, died Oct. 5 at York Hospital, York, after a long illness.

He was born in Jay, Maine, on July 25, 1917. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School and after graduation he moved to Lewiston where he was employed as a floor walker for W.T. Grant on Lisbon Street.

In February 1941 he was drafted for a year of military duty in the Army. He attended a six month course at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., and graduated as a medical technician in preparation to be sent overseas to the Pacific area including New Guinea, Australia, and the Philippines. After serving for three years and three weeks overseas, he was returned to the states and continued his service at Camp Edwards in Mass. He served his country well for a total of five years and was discharged V.J. Day Aug. 15, 1945.

He was married to the former Virginia King of Lewiston on March 13, 1941.

He was employed by the New England Telephone company in the Lewiston, Auburn area retiring after 38 years.

The past 15 years he has wintered in Arizona and Florida, retiring to Wells for the summer months.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years; two sons, Frederick Jr. of McComb, Okla. and Bruce Pettingill, address unknown; two sisters, Freda Traihtenberg, his twin, of Sun City, Ariz. and Beryl Hennessey of Stratford, Conn.; four grandchildren, Kristen Vacara of Kennebunk, Danny Pettingill, Jill Pettingill and Fred Pettingill III, all of Oklahoma; five great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Pettingill and a sister, Beverly Emmons.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 31 in Auburn, for 56 years, Telephone Pioneers and AARP.

There will be no service at this time. Arrangements are by the Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to a charity of your choice.

Estelle Sabin, 87

WEST PARIS - Estelle Dawson Sabin, 87, died Oct. 11, 2001 at the Ledgeview Living Center in West Parish, Maine, where she had resided the past two years, and was formerly of Rumford and Orono, Maine.

She was born in Rumford on Feb. 24, 1914, the daughter of Isaac "Jack" and Alice (Roy) Dawson, graduated from Mexico High School and had attended Bates College.

She was employed as a draftsman for the Maine State Highway Department for more than 20 years until her retirement in the mid 1970s. She was a former Girl Scout leader when she resided in Orono. She was an avid bridge player and was an excellent athlete. She loved the outdoors, especially cross-country skiing, tennis and swimming, and she passed her love for the outdoors to her children and children of her many friends.

She was married in Mexico, on Dec. 28, 1940 to the late Roger C. Sabin who died in Bangor on Dec. 10, 1992.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Rosalind "Linda" Wade and husband, William of Kennebunkport; one son, Roger Sabin and his wife, Barbara, of East Andover, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Law and husband, John, of Mexico; one brother, Everett Dawson and his wife, Pauline, of Mexico; three grandchildren, Michael and Benjamin Sabin of East Andover, and Brian Wade of Pomfret, Conn.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Eunice Murphy and Janet Anderson; four brothers, Emile, John, Roy, and Robert Dawson.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Meader and Son Funeral Home, Rumford, with Rev. Franklin Haines officiating. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery, Wilton.

Elmer Clapp, 73

LYMAN - Elmer R. Clapp, 73, of Chappell Shore Drive, died Nov. 21, 2001, at his residence in Lyman after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 21, 1928 in Boston, Mass., the son of Elmer and Rita (Dolan) Clapp, and attended Boston schools.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the Aircraft Carrier "USS Leyte."

He was employed for 33 years with American Airlines as a supervisor of cabin services at Boston's Logan Airport, retiring in 1983. After his retirement, he moved to Lyman, where he served the town as building inspector and as a member of the zoning board and new town hall building committee.

He was a communicant of St. Phillips Church, longtime member and past Commander of Beachmont Post 6712 VFW in Revere, and the Dayton-Lyman American Legion.

He is predeceased by a son, Stephen Clapp, who died in 1995.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Margaret (Gleason) Clapp of Lyman; four sons, Robert Clapp of Kissimmee, Fla., Kevin Clapp of Lyman, Brian Clapp of Lyman, Thomas Mayo of Waterboro; three daughters, Faith O'Hara of Covington, La., Margaret Clapp of Biddeford and Theresa Clapp of Lyman; one brother, Peter Clapp of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two sisters, Rita Marshal of Lynn, Mass. and Carole Humphreys of Revere, Mass.; and 13 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Phillips Catholic Church, Lyman on Monday with Fr. Thomas Lee officiating.

Burial was in Chadbourne Cemetery, Lyman.

Mary C. Cuneo, 92

BANGOR/KENNEBUNK - Mary C. Cuneo, 92, wife of the late Dr. Kenneth J. Cuneo, died Nov. 18, 2001, at a Bangor hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Medford, Mass. May 8, 1909, the daughter of Allan P. and Mary C. (Dutton) Chase. She attended Abbott Academy in Andover, Mass., and graduated from Medford High School. She was an extremely devoted wife and mother whose support was instrumental in the development and success of her husband's 40-year medical practice. Her interests included gardening, cooking, and natural history. She was an avid sports fan with particular interest in the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Allan Cuneo and his wife, Cheryl, of Sarasota, Fla. and Mark Loring Cuneo and his wife, Sharon, of Bangor; five grandchildren, Andrew and John Cuneo, Kevin, Arnold and Charles Nadeau; and one great granddaughter, Madison Nadeau.

Funeral services were held Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk with the Rev. Steve Hastings, pastor of the Christ Church, Kennebunk, officiating. Interment was in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Agnes Davies, 99

WOLFEBORO, N.H. - Agnes W. Davies, 99, resident of SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Wolfeboro, N.H. since 1996 and a longtime resident of Wells, Maine, died on Nov. 20, 2001 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, N.H.

She was born Feb. 17, 1902 in Roxbury, Mass., a daughter of Emery and Minnie (Wilson) Howard. Prior to her completion of high school she married Charles L. Davies in 1920. At the age of 96, she received her high school diploma from the Cambridge Latin School (Mass.) during a family celebration of her life held in Wells.

For 27 years, she and her husband owned and operated the Island Store on Drakes Island in Wells. She was also employed by Hanson's and Congdon's Donut Shops in Wells for many years.

She was a member of the Wells Congregational Church and its Ladies Benevolent Society. For 30 winters, she lived both in Englewood and Avon Park, Fla., where she was an avid shuffleboard and bingo player, and was a faithful friend to many. Until the age of 96, she was a devoted letter writer, keeping family and friends connected.

She was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Charles L. Davies who died in 1993.

She is survived by eight children, Charles Davis of San Diego, Calif., Eleanor Boston of Wells, Dorothy Sherwood of Marblehead, Mass., Donald Davis of Vianen, The Netherlands, Robert Davis of Wolfeboro, N.H., Jeannette Haggett of Wells, Ben Richard Davis of Bolinas, Calif. and Priscilla Hotte of West Poland, Maine. She also leaves 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, at the Wells Congregational Church, Post Road, Wells with the Rev. Gordon Miller officiating. Private Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.

George Eldridge Jr., 82

NORTH BERWICK - George W. Eldridge Jr., 82, of Wells Street, passed away Nov. 20, 2001 at H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

He was born in Millbridge, Maine on July 11, 1919, a son of George W. and Lucy M. (Wilson) Eldridge. After high school, he completed studies in culinary arts at the former Quoddy Training School. He then worked as a chef at the Magnolia Hotel in New York City. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Army and completed basic and ski troop training at Lake Placid, New York. As a member of the First Infantry Division, he shipped out on the "Queen Mary" and saw his first combat in North Africa where he was wounded and briefly held as a POW. From Africa, he fought across Sicily and then shipped to Tidwell Barracks in England. On June 6, 1944, he landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. After the liberation of Paris, he fought through Belgium and Germany where he was wounded a second time. He received a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Badges in five different weapons. After the war, he served nine years as a Maine State Trooper in Troop A. It was during this time that he met and married Jane Eaton of North Berwick. He later became a rural letter carrier and served for 26 years.

He was a member of the Pleiades Lodge in Milbridge, Maine and an honorary member of the Yorkshire Lodge 179 AF & AM in North Berwick, where he had received his 50-year pin.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard.

Surviving are his wife, Jane; one son, Donald; one brother, Douglas; and two sisters, Dorothy Fickett and Evangeline Nichols.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Bethel Christian Church, North Berwick with the Rev. Robert G. Cole Sr. officiating. Interment was in Ocean View Cemetery, in Wells.

James Houghton, 84

OGUNQUIT - James T. Houghton Jr., 84, and a resident of Cherry Lane, died Nov. 14, 2001, at home after a brief illness.

He was born in New York City on Jan. 30, 1917. He was a son of James and Mabel (Parsons) Houghton Sr. and attended the Albany Academy for Boys in Albany, New York. He then attended Amherst College, Amherst, Mass., from which he graduated cum laude in 1940. He was president of the student body, managed the school football team and was a member of the Chi-Psi Fraternity.

He was employed by Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Company in the Public Relations Department and later by the Springfield Revitalization Committee in Springfield, Mass. And in addition he taught at the American International College evening program for 25 years in Springfield, Mass., because of his expertise in public relations. He also served as Fire Commissioner for the City of Springfield.

He served as Board President for many organizations including the Hampden District Mental Health Clinic, the City of Springfield Public Forum Series. He also served on the board of Trustees of the Bay State West.

A longtime summer resident of Ogunquit, coming since he was a boy and moving here in 1980 following his retirement. Painting, writing and music were his passion. He also built four sailboats, one with each of his children.

He is survived by his four children, Christopher S. Houghton of Superior, Co., Alexander G. Houghton of Granada Hills, Calif., Pamela Houghton of Van Nuys, Calif., and Heather E. Houghton of Longmont, Colo.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells.
