Carol E. Van Aken

A memorial service celebrating the life of Carol E. Van Aken, 55, of Winchester, Massachusetts and Ocean Point was held at the First Congregational Church on the Common in Winchester on Saturday, January 30. She passed away on Friday, January 22 after a tenacious battle with breast cancer.
Mrs. Van Aken was born and raised in Portland, Conn. She graduated from Portland High School and was one of 20 women in the class of about 1,000 men entering MIT in the fall of 1961. She was active in her class reunion committees and in the Association of MIT Alumnae. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook, and sports car rallyist and was active in her church as well as in the Jumelage Sister-City program between Winchester and Saint Germain en Laye, France. Mrs. Van Aken participated enthusiastically with her family in support of Winchester schools, youth activities, and especially local Winchester politics.
After receiving her SB in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965, she was hired as a staff assistant in the Division of Sponsored Research. For 34 years she served in a variety of increasingly responsible professional staff positions in the Research and Financial Administration of MIT, most recently as Assistant Controller.
Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Peter of Winchester, Mass. and Ocean Point; one son, David, a sophomore at MIT; one daughter, Christina, a research assistant at NASA Ames Research Center in California; her parents, Clifford and Helen (Iverson) Gustafson of Portland, Conn.; her mother-in-law, Marion T. Van Aken of Ocean Point, formerly of Dover-Foxcroft; two brothers, Charles and Clifford Gustafson; and two sisters, Nancy Droit and Elise O'Brien.

Christina A. Vayo

Christine A. Vayo, 92, of Sawyers Island, passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, April 22.
Born in South Portland on April 7, 1912, she was the daughter of Edgar and Emma Hamilton, descended from six generations of Hamiltons on Chebeaque Island.
After graduating from South Portland High School, she worked in Portland before marrying Reginald Vayo. They were married for 69 years.
During World War II the Vayos moved to Washington, D.C. before moving to Old Greenwich, Conn. There she developed her interest in gardening and volunteered with the American Red Cross.
The Vayos built a house together in Greenwich, Conn. and lived there for 23 years while enjoying worldwide travel both for pleasure and business.
In 1981, the Vayos returned to Maine and lived on Sawyers Island. Their great love was their gardens. In 1999, Mrs. Vayo was awarded first place at the flower show for her prize-winning coffee tree, now on display at the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald; brother, Edgar; and beloved granddaughter, Bridget Sor-kin.
Survivors include three daughters, Marie Wood and husband Don, Jean Hamilton, and Carol Barr and husband, Cameron; five grandchildren, Brian Wood, Amy Whitley, John Hamilton, David Hamilton and Matthew Barr; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew Sorkin, Graham Sorkin, Blake Wood, Dillon Wood, Taylor Wood, Christine Whitley and Allison Whitley.
A memorial service was held Sunday, April 25 at the Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Frank M. Verzuh

BOSTON, MA - Frank M. Verzuh, who formerly served as Director of the Office of Statistical Services and as Director of Operations of the Computation Center at MIT, died on Tuesday, October 10, at his home in Boston after a lengthy illness at age 82.
Born on the family ranch in Colorado, Dr. Verzuh, known as the human computer, did his undergraduate work at the University of Denver and received his masters degree and doctorate from MIT. He joined MIT's Center for Analysis in 1940 to work with the late Professor S.H. Caldwll on the new differential analyzer, and played an important role in designing and constructing computer equipment and systems at the University. He also developed and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in analog and digital computation.
Verzuh, who had consulted with government and industry during much of his academic career, left MIT in 1960 to become Director of Operations Research at the investment firm of Merrill Lynch.
In 1962, he set up a pioneering nationwide management system connecting all 2,200 retail outlets in the Safeway food store chain to a central computer. As an automation consultant, he subsequently worked with countless clients in virtually every field, throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.
In recent years, Mr. Verzuh, who spent his summers golfing and boating at Norway Lake, oversaw extensive real estate interests in Colorado. Mr. Verzuh, who had no children, leaves one sister, Mary Brenside of Duluth, MN; cousins, Kristen Johnson, Harris Johnson, and Margaret Troup, all of Quincy, MA, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Katherine (Stadjuhar) Verzuh, three brothers and one sister. His wife, Edna (Tamm), died in July.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 13, at the Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home in Quincy, MA, with the Reverend Carol Stine officiating. Interment was in Blue Hill cemetery in Braintree, MA.

Hudson H. Vannah

Hudson H. Vannah, 92, a lifelong resident of Nobleboro, died early on the morning of Sept. 15, at Shore Village Nursing Home, Rockland. born Feb. 19, 1907, in Nobleboro, he was the son of Kelder A. and Annie F. (Harrington) Vannah. Attending local schools, he served as valedictorian of the Lincoln Academy class of 1924.
A self employed farmer all of his life, Hudson established "Vannah Farm" in Nobleboro. He had a love of town politics and was active throughout his life in the affairs of the town of Nobleboro, serving as selectman, road commissioner and tax collector. He was a member of the Nobleboro Grange for over 75 years, the Nobleboro Historical Society, Agway, and the Soil Conservancy Committee. In 1984, he had his book, "Five Generations on a Maine Farm" published.
Mr. Vannah leaves his wife, Mildred (Stackpole) Vannah, of Nobleboro, his step-daughter Eleanor Bickford of Nobleboro, three step-grandchildren Jim Bickford of Nobleboro, Michael Bickford of Waitsfield, Vt., Patricia Alfieri of Simsbury, Conn. and five step-great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate his life will be 1 p.m. Saturday, at the chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta. He will be laid to rest in the Vannah Family Cemetery.

George B. Vaughan

George Batchelor Vaughan, 94, of Damariscotta, died Sunday, May 2.
Born in Wellesley Hills, Mass., on March 3, 1905, he was the son of John F. and Ellen Batchelor Vaughan. In 1930, he married Martha Cartwright Morris of New Haven. Conn. He attended Antioch College and studied landscape architecture at Harvard School of Design.
Mr. Vaughan worked for Olmstead Brothers in California at Point Lobos and Yosemite parks as well as serving as project architect for waterfront parks in Camden and Rockport. During World War II, he worked for Sikorsky Helicopter in Connecticut. In 1947, because of his love for the Maine coast, Mr. Vaughan moved back to Maine, working at Goudy & Stevens Shipyard and Sample's Shipyard. His final career was as a Fisheries Technician for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service where he developed a marine sampling device that was patented by Fish & Wildlife in Washington as the ``Boothbay Trawl."
He lived in the Boothbay Region from 1947 to 1988, when he moved to Schooner Cove in Damariscotta. He was active in the Congregational Church, played in the Lincoln County Orchestra, was an officer and instructor in the U.S. Power Squadron, and had a lifelong interest in sailboats.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years of Damariscotta; two daughters, Zibette Dean of Edgecomb, and Nancy Holmes of Newcastle; a son, Charles Vaughan of Dresden; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of his life at a later date when family and friends can gather from across the country. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support Special Collections at the Bowdoin College Library. Sheila M. Verrill

LEWISTON - Sheila M. Verrill, 33, Bryant Pond, died Monday, December 7, 1998 at Central Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Norway on February 6, 1965, the daughter of Richard and Phyllis (Merrill) Blake. Educated in the Bethel schools, she graduated from Telstar High School with the class of 1983.
She married Jerry Verrill on September 24, 1983 and has resided in Bryant Pond since, coming from Bethel.
After graduating from high school Sheila earned her Certificate of Nursing Assistance and worked for Ledgeview Nursing Home for five years. She later went on to work for an additional five years as a CNA with Androscoggin Home Health Service until illness prevented her from continuing to work.
The mother of two children, Faith and Jerod, Sheila was an active member of the South Woodstock Seventh Day Adventist Church and volunteered many hours for many different organizations including the American Cancer Association.
An avid racing fan, Sheila also enjoyed the beach, particularly those in Florida, motorcycling, and crafting. She will be fondly remembered as one who especially loved her family and friends.
Besides her husband of 15 years, Sheila is survived by her parents, Richard and Phyllis of Bethel; mother and father in-law, Leon and Marguerite Verrill of Bryant Pond; a daughter Faith; a son Jerod; two brothers, Peter and his wife Katherine of Mt. Desert Island, and Stephen and his wife Lindie of North Conway, NH and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at the South Woodstock Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Interment will immediately follow.

Albert E. Verrill

LEWISTON - Albert E. Verrill, 63, of Mechanic Falls, died Sunday, February 7 at Central Maine Medical Center,
He was born in New Gloucester on March 28, 1935, the son of Albert R and Katherine Perkins Verrill. He attended Mechanic Falls schools and worked in local shoe and furniture factories.
He is survived by two sisters, Mildred Edwards of Lewiston and Mary Richards of Auburn and six nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11 at 6 pm at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 26 West Dwinal St, Mechanic Falls.
Family and Friends may attend a visiting hour Thursday evening from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Osmond S. Verrill

GRAY - Osmond S. Verrill, 89, of Bailey Hill Road in Poland died Saturday February 27, 1999.
He was born in New Gloucester, on April 15, 1909, the son of Scott and Hannah Verrill.
He was educated in New Gloucester schools.
He had worked for many years as a mill worker in the Mechanic Falls area and had also worked for Rogers Fiber. He had lived in the Poland area for many years.
He is survived a son, Osmond C. Verrill, of Poland; three grandchildren, Steven C. and his wife Susanne, Thomas L. and his wife, Lorrie, and Susan Jordan and her husband, Peter; five great-grandchildren, Jacob and Lacey Verrill and Kimberly and Jessica Verrill, and Amy Jordan.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred.
Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Pine Grove cemetery in Poland. The time and date will be announced later. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, St. Mechanic Falls.
Clarissa S. Vinal

Clarissa S. Vinal, 98, of Waldoboro Rd., Jefferson, died Sun., July 18 after a brief illness at MaineGeneral in Augusta.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1900 in Hopewell, New Brunswick, the daughter of Albert T. and Annie Newcomb Stiles.
She was a graduate of the Kents Hill School and worked for many years in various positions in state government, retiring in 1959 from the Dept. of Banks and Banking.
She and her husband, Lauriston H. Vinal, traveled and gardened in their early retirement years. She loved to cook and was especially happy when she could entertain her relatives and friends with huge home-cooked meals. She loved to go hiking in the woods, looking at all the creatures of nature. She maintained bird feeders each winter and enjoyed watching the birds come and go. She spent her later years in the company of her faithful and beloved dog, Buttons.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lauriston, in 1986, and her daughter, Helen, in 1995.
Survivors include two grandsons and their wives, James V. and Jo Ann Hilton of Jefferson, and Charles R. and Barbara Hilton of Naperville, Ill.; six great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren; two sisters, Cordelia Giles of Readfield, and Harriet Ham of Fayette, along with several nieces and nephews.
There will be no visiting hours. There will be a graveside funeral service on Fri., July 23 at 2 p.m. at Fairview cemetery on the Washington Rd., Jefferson, Rev. Jo Ann Hilton officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Jefferson Fire and Rescue, Jefferson 04348.

William Vrooman

William Vrooman, 70, Nobleboro, died Jan. 28 at his home after a long battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 29, 1928, in Schenectady, N.Y., he was the son of Laverne and Bertha Lott Vrooman, attending Schenectady public schools.
Entering the Air Force at a young age, he served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Retiring in 1970, after 23 years, he then accepted a job with the State of Maine, working as a research analyst for the Department of Labor, Unemployment Division. He retired again, in 1989, after 19 years.
Mr. Vrooman was a life member of the Waldoboro VFW and a member of the Waldoboro American Legion for 26 years. He was an avid golfer, enjoying his longtime membership at Wawenock Country Club, and loved candlepin bowling.
He leaves his wife of 42 years, Georgia Simmons Vrooman of Nobleboro; two daughters, Annette Vrooman of Rawlins, Wyo., and Carol Cowan of Westbrook; a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Yvette Vrooman of Bristol; a sister, Mary Larson of Schenectady; and four grandchildren, Vicki Cowan, and Krystine, Paige, and Adam Vrooman.
Services were held Feb. 2 at the chapel of Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta, with the Rev. David Clark officiating. He will be laid to rest at Dunbar Cemetery, Nobleboro.
