WATERVILLE

Lillian Irene Cote – age 87 of Evergreen Nursing Home, Waterville and formerly of Windsor, and Washington Street, Augusta, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Campus, following a long illness. She was born in Augusta on April 2, 1915 the daughter of George F. and Lucy A. (McKenney) Taylor.

Mrs. Cote had been employed by Hallowell Shoe Co. for 40 years.

She was a communicant of St. Denis’ Catholic Church in Whitefield.

Mrs. Cote was pre-deceased by her husband, Emanuel Cote in 1970 a daughter, Joan M. Thompson in 1999, a granddaughter Jeanne Chapin also two brothers Charles and Guy and three sisters Iora, Dorothy and Evangeline.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Ben Thompson of Windsor and his companion Jeannette Weber of Gardiner; three grand-children Michael D. Nelson and his wife Marcia, Elaine Holland and Karen Garland also six great-grandchildren Anthony Aex, Matthew Shellman, Charles Chapin, Christina Holland, Shane Garland and Sarah Garland, also three nieces; Donna Gilbert and her husband Simon, Darlene Glidden,

Susan Thornton and her husband Clifton and a nephew Arnold Ricker Jr.and his wife Joan.

Relatives and friends may visit Tuesday evening from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a service for the repose of her soul will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M.

Those who desire may make donations to Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St.- Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

AUGUSTA

Constance M. “Connie” Dutil – age 68, of Sewall Street, died March 12, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Augusta, Maine on May 7, 1934 the daughter of John Bilodeau and Jeanne (Levesque) Bilodeau.

Mrs. Dutil was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and a past president of the Calumet Club Ladies Auxiliary. Her favorite pastimes included knitting, reading, puzzles, playing cards, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her devoted and beloved companion, Rene Beaudoin of Augusta; two sons, John Dutil and his wife Judy of Albuquerque, NM; and Ronald Dutil and his wife Robin of Englewood, FL; one daughter, Doris Ann Dutil McKechnie of Augusta; one sister, Doris Gammon and her husband Everett of Manchester; 7 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren; two nieces: Marilyn Palmer and her husband David of Manchester and Lisa Gammon of Washington, ME; two nephews: Buddy Gammon of Windsor, ME and Troy Gammon of Chelsea, ME; a good friend, Claire Shepard of Belgrade and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Mass will be offered 9:00 a.m. Friday, March 14th at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Augusta. Spring burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary of the Assumption Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 555, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine.

AUGUSTA

Mark J. Brann – age 30 of Winthrop St., died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 11, 2003. He was born in Berlin, Germany on November 26, 1972 a son of Donald and June (Prescott) Brann, Sr.

Mr. Brann was attended both Erskine Academy and Cony High School, graduating from Cony in 1992.

He had been employed by Lucas Tree Experts and formerly worked at Fisher Plow in Rockport.

Mark was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish and trap.

Mr. Brann is survived by his wife of 11 years, Annette (Madore) Brann of Augusta; three daughters, Amanda, Melissa and Miranda Brann all of Augusta; his parents, Donald Brann, Sr. and his wife Michelle of China and June (Prescott) Brann of Augusta; a paternal grandmother, Marian Brann of Windsor; a step-son, Brian Dyer of Augusta; four brothers, Donald Brann, Jr. and his wife Lori of Augusta, Wayne Brann and his wife Tammy of South China, Joseph Brann of China and Aaron Brann of China; two sisters, Melissa Brann of Dixmont and Amber Brann of China and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit today from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 AM.

Burial will be held in the spring at Emily Clark Cemetery, Jefferson.

Augusta

Florence H. Brush - age 74, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive. She was born on June 12, 1928 in Augusta, ME the daughter of Leroy G. and Ruth M. (Cottle) Cottle.

Florence was employed briefly at Augusta General Hospital as a wards maid and later became a homemaker.

She was married to William E. Brush in 1956 and they had three children together. He died in 1991.

Her biggest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family, playing bingo, latch hooking and gardening.

She is predeceased by three brothers Russell, Maurice and Oral Cottle and a sister Laura Preston.

Florence is survived by two daughters: Deborah R. Trask of Monmouth and Diane M. Mahoney of Whitefield; a son, Daniel E. Brush of Portsmouth, VA; two grandsons: David and Dennis Trask of Monmouth, two granddaughters, Alisha Brush of Winthrop and Chiara Mahoney of Whitefield; two brothers: Leslie Cottle of Gardiner and Harold Cottle of Augusta; two sisters: Beatrice Ridley of Readfield and Clara Crochere of Augusta; also several nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held 4:00 PM Saturday March 15th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Burial will be in the spring.

CHELSEA

Perley L. Whitten – age 70 of Togus Rd., died Thursday, March 13, 2003 at his home surrounded by his loving family following a long illness. He was born in Randolph on December 20, 1932 a son of Pearl and Harriette (Lambert) Whitten.

Mr. Whitten had been employed by Kelley’s Earthworks for over 20 years and previously worked at R. N. Sylvester.

He was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Mr. Whitten loved to dance and was an avid race car fan, driving stock cars at Unity Raceway from 1956-1963.

He was pre-deceased by a sister, Lorraine Gilley.

Mr. Whitten is survived by his wife of 9 years, Louise M. (Giroux) Whitten of Chelsea; three sons, Michael Whitten and his wife Bernadette of Augusta, Donald Whitten and his wife Rebecca of Gardiner and Jeremy Cook of Winslow; three daughters, Deborah Stitham and her companion William Preble of Augusta, Sandra Whitten of Gardiner and Kathy Whitten of Augusta; two brothers, Paul Whitten and his wife Elsie of Manchester and Pearl Whitten, Jr. of Gardiner; four sisters, Margaret Massey of Richmond, Priscilla Wing and her husband Lawrence of Winthrop, Pamela Kennerson and her husband Roland of West Gardiner and April Mathieu and her husband Lorien of Litchfield; a half-sister, Paula Saul and her husband Allan of Waterville; two step-daughters, Jolene Taker-Laberge and her husband James of Brunswick and Megan Ford of Portland; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Giroux of Chelsea; a brother-in-law, James Gilley, Sr. of Monmouth; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 PM Sunday, March 16th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the spring in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Ronald R. “Hoppy” Hopkins – age 66, of Monarch Dr., passed away Friday, March 14, 2003 at his home surrounded by his wife and family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in New Sharon on March 29, 1936, the son of Edward and Vivian (Russell) Hopkins.

Hoppy attended Gardiner Area High School, where he was a football standout and a member of the 1954 state championship team.

Ron served as a Private First Class in the US Army. He worked as a truck driver for over 39 years, first for Gray-Hildreth, in Gardiner, then for St. Johnsbury Trucking in Gardiner. He was a member of the Teamsters Union; member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #964; Gardiner American Legion Post # 4; and past president and lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3137.

Ron was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

After his retirement, Hoppy drove a bus for the Augusta School Department for 11 years. His passengers knew him to say, “My house is my house.” He particularly valued his role as driver for the Cony Girls basketball team. He had a tremendous love and respect for “his” Cony girls throughout the years, and for Coach Paul Vachon and staff. He will no doubt continue to be an avid fan.

Hoppy contributed countless volunteer hours to various youth sports programs. Over the past 40 years, he had coached several football, basketball, and baseball teams, encouraging hundreds of young athletes. He himself participated in men’s fast pitch softball for over 30 years.

His sense of humor and compassion will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lorraine (Champagne) Hopkins and their children Brenda Moody and husband Ken of Augusta, Debra Cates and husband Preston “Duffy”, of Gardiner, Mike Hopkins and wife Anita, David Hopkins and wife Andrea, and Rusty Hopkins and wife Heather, all of Augusta. Pepere is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Jamie Cates and wife Becky, of Gardiner, Sara Moody, Molly and Sam Hopkins, Riley and Cari Hopkins, and Abby and Reed Hopkins, all of Augusta; a brother, Robert Hopkins and wife Alice of Nokomis, FL as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit Tuesday, March 18th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where members of the Augusta Eagles are asked to meet at 7 PM to recite prayers for their departed member and officers and members of the Augusta Elks are asked to meet at 7:30 PM to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta. Burial and committal prayers will follow in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta

GARDINER

David L. Baty – age 65 of Old Brunswick Ave., died Friday, March 14, 2003 at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta following a brief illness. He was born in Redford Township, MI on January 29, 1938 a son of David E. and Julia (Yetsko) Baty.

Mr. Baty was a U.S. Navy veteran who retired in 1975 after serving for over 19 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post # 4 in Gardiner, and was past president and current member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3137.

Mr. Baty was currently retired and was previously employed by Transco in Augusta after several years of employment and Hertz Rent-a-car in Augusta and Rockland.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley E. (Cross) Baty of Gardiner; a son, David C. Baty of Hallowell; a daughter, Rhonda L. Baty and her companion Jason Turcotte of Chelsea; four brothers, Gordon Baty of Goose Creek, SC, Benjamin Baty of Redford, MI, Edward Baty of Union Lake, MI and Thomas Baty of Redford, MI; a granddaughter, Erica Schoen of Chelsea and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 18th at 11 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Burial will be held at a later time at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

Clearwater, Florida

David Lloyd George Pound- 84, of Clearwater, Florida and Augusta, Maine, died Wednesday morning at Morton Plant Hospitol in Clearwater, Florida after a long illness. He was born in Millinocket, Maine on November 16, 1918- the son of John Thomas and Estella Mae [Reynolds] Pound. He was a graduate of Stearns High School in Millinocket, Maine, and of Ricker College in Houlton, Maine- class of 1939. Lloyd was a Navy Veteran of WWll, and served from 1944 to 1946.
Lloyd was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., and was a district manager for over twenty-one years. He served as President of the Maine General Insurance Agents and Managers Association. Prior to that, he worked as a police officer and recreational director in Caribou, Maine. He was owner of Pound's Coffee Shop in Millinocket for a number of years and was president of the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Board of Selectmen. In addition, he was a Corporator of Piscataquis Savings Bank, and co-founder of the Millinocket and Strearns High School Alumni Association, as well as President and Deputy District Governor of the Lion's Club. He belonged to the International Order of Odd Fellows and was a member of the Nollesemic Lodge #205 of the Fraternal Order of Masons in Millinocket.
After moving to Augusta, Lloyd joined the Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club, and was a member of the American Legion. He was a long time member of St. Mark's Episcopol Church and served on the vestry. Lloyd joined the Kora Temple of Shriners of Lewiston, and subsequently belonged to the Florida Shriner's Club. After retirement, Lloyd continued to serve the community as a counselor of SCORE-the Service Corps Of Retired Executives in Augusta, Maine.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Olive [Boynton] Pound of Clearwater, Fla.; two sons- David Lloyd Pound and his wife Lynda of Palermo, Maine and Jonathan Michael Pound and his wife Annette of Farmington, Maine; three grandchildren- Kristin Michael Pound of Waterville, Maine, Stephanie Pound Dickson of Cranston, Rhode Island and Glendon Lloyd Pound of Farmington, Maine; five brothers and sisters- Oswald Pound and Theresa Pound of Millinocket, Maine, Marie Henry of Rockport, Maine, Elizabeth Brooks of New Brunswick, Canada, and Richard Pound of Millinocket, Maine; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted in the spring. Arrangements will be announced through Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine.

AUGUSTA

Rolla J. Clukey – age 79 of Willow St., died Sunday, March 16, 2003 at the Veterans Hospital at Togus following a brief illness. He was born in Dover-Foxcroft on August 16, 1923 a son of Harold J. and Doris E. (Millett) Clukey.

Mr. Clukey was a U. S Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was in the 79th anti-aircraft division at Normandy, earning 4 battle stars.

He had been employed by Sampson’s Supermarket for over 29 years and previously, he was a self employed tradesman.

Mr. Clukey was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Pine Tree Post #887 in Augusta.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Geneva (Craig) Clukey in 1974. Also, preceding him in death was a brother, Quintin Clukey.

Mr. Clukey is survived by two sons, Danny Clukey of Somersworth, NH and Steven Clukey and his wife Donna of Canaan; three brothers, Vernon Clukey of Panama, Cyril Clukey of Detroit and Harold Clukey of Bryant Pond; a sister, Joan Walters of Bryant Pond; two grandsons, Scott and Chad both of Waterville and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his special friends, Cecile Pare of Augusta, her two sons, Emile and Albert and her daughter, Theresa and Carlton and Joyce Cote of Augusta.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 PM at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta. Spring burial will be in the South Side Cemetery, Skowhegan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, One Main St. Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1240.
