HARTFORD, CONN.
George H. Kennedy - age 71, of Harvard Street, died unexpectedly August 2, 2001 at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford. He was born in Portland, Maine on December 4, 1929 the son of George L. Kennedy and Catherine S. (Wallace) Kennedy.
Mr. Kennedy was educated in Portland, Maine and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He retired from Accurate Threaded Co. of Newington, CT where was employed as a machinist for over 30 years.
Mr. Kennedy was a member of St. Lawrence O'Tool Catholic Church of Hartford and a former member of the Connecticut Governor's Horse Guard.
Surviving is his wife, Helen (Lacasse) Kennedy of Hartford, CT; two daughters, Nancy Tollefson and her husband Charles of Windsor Locks, CT and Cindy Moulton and her husband Wesley of Manchester, CT; five grandchildren one great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours are 4-8 PM Monday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Tuesday August 7th at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta, ME. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

AUGUSTA
Donald R. Labbe, Sr. - age 76, of Monroe St., died October 21, 2001 at Maine General Medical Center. He was born in Augusta, Maine on April 24, 1925, the son of Omer A. and Marie-Ange (Labbe) Labbe.
Mr. Labbe was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a life member of Le Club Calumet and the John F. McPherson Post of the Disabled American Veterans at Togus. He was also a member of the Fitzgerald-Cummings Post # 2 American Legion of Augusta, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Natanis Golf Club.
Mr. Labbe was a 1943 graduate of Cony High School and served for three years in the Finance Department of the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN; Duke University, Durham, NC.; Fort Devens, MA.; and Paris, France where he served as interpreter for the European Central Finance Disbursing Officer in his dealings with officials of the Banque de France.
After his discharge from the Army in April 1946, he was employed at the Veterans Administration Medical & Regional Office Center, Togus until his retirement in September 1981. His entire career was spent in the Finance Department, retiring as the Assistant Finance Officer.
Mr. Labbe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline (Daniel) Labbe of Augusta; a son, Donald R. Labbe, Jr. and his wife Bev of Augusta; four daughters, Patricia Douin and her husband Lionel of Belfast, Nancy Varney and her husband Frank, Susan Bonsant and her husband Gary, and Debi Labbe, all of Augusta; seven grandchildren: Lionel Douin, Jr. of Searsmont, Wendy Douin of Atlanta, GA, Dawn Varney of Jacksonville, FL, Jason Labbe, Lauri Labbe, Brian Labbe and Matthew Bonsant all of Augusta; a step-grandchild, Chris Oddo of Augusta, two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
He was predeceased by his mother in 1986, his father in l986, his sister Jeanne Pineau in 1981, and two brothers, Raymond in 1994 and Gerard in 1996.
At his request, there will be no public visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Tuesday, Oct. 23rd at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. WINTHROP
Arline C. Laflin – age 82 of Forest Ave. died Monday, September 3, 2001 at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor after a brief illness. She was born in Norway on October 15, 1918 the daughter of Elbridge and Marion (Libby) Woodworth.
Mrs. Laflin was a graduate of Norway High School and Central Beauty School of Augusta and was active during her high school years playing tennis and basketball.
She was a homemaker for most of her life. She enjoyed spending most of her time with her children and grandchildren at her home and her camp on Azicohos Lake in Lincoln Plantation.
Mrs. Laflin was a member of Rotary Auxiliary, Maine National Guard Auxiliary, Maine Association of Retirees Auxiliary, was past president of the American Legion Post 40 Auxiliary in Winthrop, past president of Junior and Senior Mothers Club in Winthrop, past president of Winthrop P.T.A. and hosted the Governors Tea at the Blaine House in Augusta for several years.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Lawrence “Jack” S. Laflin, a sister, Virginia Estes and a grandson, Michael Harrington.
Mrs. Laflin is survived by four sons, Donald Laflin and his wife Brenda of North Monmouth, James Laflin and his wife Laura of Readfield, Bruce Laflin and his wife Brenda of Wells and Kirk Laflin and his wife Jennifer of Cape Elizabeth; three daughters, Dorothy Harrington and her husband Philip of Woolwich, Vicki Laflin and her partner George Roy of Dresden and Betsy Pottle and her husband Dan of Winthrop; a sister, Susan Doughty of West Paris; 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 7th at 11 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Burial will follow in the old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.
SOUTH CHINA
Neil I. Lemieux - age 65 of Rockwood Dr., died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center as a result of heart failure. He was born in Augusta on February 4, 1936 the son of Louis and Addie (Violette) Lemieux.
He grew up in Richmond, Maine, and graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington. Mr. Lemieux loved teaching. He began his professional career as a 4th grade teacher in Livermore, where he became principal in 1961. Later, he was principal in the Northeast Harbor and the Medway schools. In 1967, he became the assistant superintendent in Rockland, ME and earned his Master’s Degree at the University of Maine. From 1976 through 1979, he worked for the Maine School Management Association. He became the Superintendent of Schools in Easton, ME in 1979 and later became superintendent at Hall-Dale school. He earned his Doctorate of Education in 1986. He retired in 1994.
Since retirement, he received a Volunteer of the Year award from the American Lung Association. He was also an active volunteer for Hospice, August Food Bank, and the Maine Special Olympics. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Augusta. A lifelong educator, he had a zest for living, telling stories, and giving his time and skills to others.
Neil cherished his years as a husband, father of four, and grandfather of ten. He was particularly proud to pass on his skills as a carpenter and handyman to his children and was known for his desire to help them in any way he could. He enjoyed traveling, biking, hiking, and his dog, Murphy. He was known for his sense of humor, his creative thinking, and his sense of adventure.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary (Watson) Lemieux of South China; his children: Daniel and his wife Laurie Lemieux of Winthrop, Scott and his wife Julie Lemieux of Brunswick, Laurie and her husband Alan Mack of Portland and Amy and her husband Mark Nisbett of Bangor; his grandchildren; Daniel, Nicolaos, and Grace Lemieux, Luke Aronne and Lauren Lemieux; Samantha and James Mack; and Jennifer, Jessica, and Sam Nisbett; a brother, Louis Lemieux of Leesburg, FL; a sister, Jean Pottle of Casco and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are welcome to visit and share memories tonight from 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave., Augusta.

Augusta
Dr. John H. Marvin – age 72 of 15 Fuller Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. He was born in Montreal, P.Q. Canada, January 7, 1929 the son of Dr. Donald and Irma (Savage) Marvin.
Dr. Marvin received his BA degree in Economics from Haverford College in 1950, his MA degree in elementary education from the University of Denver and his EdD in educational Administration from the Teachers College of Columbia University.
Prior to his coming to Maine, he worked with the National Education Association
In Washington, D.C. and served briefly as an assistant professor at Penn State where he conducted manpower research related to the poverty program.
From 1966 to 1984, he was Executive Director of the Maine teachers Association where he directed the transformation of that organization that was all-inclusive including school superintendents into a teachers union that bargained collectively for the vast majority of teachers in Maine including the University of Maine which he organized. He collaborated in drafting all of the collective bargaining laws governing public employees in Maine.
From 1985 to 1987 he was a Labor representative on the Maine Board of Arbitration and Conciliation, where he took pride in arriving at far more agreements by conciliation between the parties than relying upon adjudication.
In 1986-1988 he was Research Director and Director of Special Projects for the Maine State Employees Association.
From 1988 – 1994 he was Senior Field Representative for Northern New England Council of the Service Employees International Union. He negotiated contracts, lobbied in Maine Legislature and organized and conducted campaigns in both New Hampshire and Maine.
He was employed by the National Council of Senior Citizens/Alliance for Retired Americans as Field Representative. A member if the Maine Retired Teachers Association, the Kennebec Retired Teachers Association, a member of the U.S. Action Committee, the Maine Democratic Party, Chairman of the Consumers for Affordable Health Care, was a member of the Dirigo Alliance, a former Chairman of Medical Care Development. Was associated with the Citizens against Hand Gun Violence he was a member of the Civil War Round Table and was a former member of the Augusta Kiwanis Club.
Dr. Marvin received the American Lung Association of Maine’s 2001 Patient Advocate Award.
Survivors include his step-mother, Rickel Marvin of Arlington, VA; his wife, Louise (Dostie) Marvin of Augusta; three sons, Nathan Marvin and his wife Lisa of Port Clyde, ME, H. Bruce Marvin and his wife Paula of Seattle, WA and Richard Marvin and his wife Yuning of Carvalis, OR; a daughter, Ann Marie Bourque and her husband Michael of West Gardiner; a step-daughter, Janice Karczewski and her husband Scott of Augusta; a sister, Dr. Grace Marvin and her husband Dr. Julian Zener of Chico, CA; also an uncle, James Marvin of Philadelphia, PA; seven grandchildren, Adrienne Marvin, Zachary Marvin, Hannah Marvin, Brandon Marvin, Madeline Marvin, Jacob Bourque and Steven Bourque; two step-grandchildren, Lisa Reynolds and Todd Karczewski; two step-great grandchildren Dylan and Taylah. He was pre-deceased by a brother Donald Marvin.

BELGRADE
Martin H. Meader – age 83 of Bartlett Rd., and formerly of Hospital St., Augusta, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at Maine Veterans Home after a brief illness. He was born in Randolph on November 3, 1917.
Mr. Meader was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1936 and was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during World War II.
He had been employed by the Maine Turnpike Authority for 16 years.
Mr. Meader was a communicant of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Augusta where he served on several committees.
Among his loves was golf and volunteering at the food and clothing banks.
He was also a member of the Augusta Elks Lodge # 964.
Mr. Meader was pre-deceased by his daughter, Sharon Sewall.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ina E. (Dumais) Meader of Belgrade; a niece, 7 nephews, several cousins, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, September 25th at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Augusta with Rev. John J. Keggi, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Augusta.

MANCHESTER
Karen L. Nason - age 48, of Lakehurst Acres, died unexpectedly September 18, 2001 in the Emergency Room of MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, Maine. She was born in Woburn, Mass. on August 29, 1953 the daughter of Richard B. Keene and Doris L. (Lacasse) Keene.
Karen graduated from Andover (Mass.) High School and was employed for 15 years by Cromerics of Woburn, MA.
Karen is survived by her mother, Doris L. Keene of Hillsboro, NH; a son, Matthew Kenneth Nason of Augusta, ME; three brothers, Raymond Keene of Hillsboro, NH, David Keene of Gardner, Mass. and Richard Keene of Fitchburg, Mass.; three sisters, Susan Keene of Illinois, Helen M. Keene of Barrington, NH and Debbie McCarthy of Clermont, FL; her former husband, Kenneth Nason of Madison, ME and several nieces and nephews.
There will no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, September 22nd at Cox Memorial Methodist Church, Hallowell, ME.

Bernice C. Pare -
Mrs. Pare was a self employed hairdresser at her home, doing business as Bernice’s Beauty Salon from 1960 until her retirement in 1972. She was previously employed by William’s Nursing Home for nine years. Mrs. Pare had also worked at St. Paul’s Center for several years. She was a choir member at both Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallowell and St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Augusta.
Bernice was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallowell, a member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens, Ladies of St. Anne Society and St. Paul’s Cursillistas and Charismatic prayer group.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Antoine Albert in 1962, her second husband, Paul E. Ouellette in 1980 and a brother, Patrick Bard, Jr.
Surviving is her husband, Joseph L. “Larry” Pare of Hallowell; four sons, Antoine Albert and his wife Judith of Cornville, Joseph L. Albert and his wife Mary Ellen of Chelsea, Roland Albert and his wife Yonga of Crestview, FL and Donald Albert of Kissimee, FL; a step-son, Roger Pare and his wife Shelby of Rockland; two step-daughters, Jeanne Arbour and her husband Roland of Belgrade and Anne Marie Pare of Anderson, NC; eight brothers, Richard Bard of Hiram, Leo James Bard of Presque Isle, Clinton Bard of Milwaukee, Wis., Gerard Bard of Passadumkeag, Wilfred Bard of Lincoln Center, Albert Bard of Howland, Arthur Bard of Lincoln Center and William Bard of New Hampshire; four sisters, Helen Cyr of West Enfield, Florence Ouellette of Connecticut, Therese Hallowell of Augusta and Bernadette Paradis of East Millinocket; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

AUGUSTA
Yvette A. Pare - age 88, of Oxford Street Extension, died with her family at her side on October 25, 2001 after a long illness. She was born in Augusta, Maine on August 31, 1913 the daughter of Joseph Morrissette and Rose (Lagueux) Morrissette.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Pare had been employed by Bates Manufacturing Co. for a short time. She was previously employed by Hazzard Shoe Company for many years. She also had been employed for 19 years by Glo’s Variety on Northern Avenue.
Mrs. Pare was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Cushnoc Senior Citizens and the Ladies of St. Anne Society.
In her spare time, she enjoyed being a seamstress and collecting dolls.
Her husband, Emile D. Pare, died in 1973. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Pare in1938; 3 brothers, Laurier, Wilfred and Roland Morrissette; and a sister, Loretta Morrissette.
Surviving are three sons, Gerard N. Pare of Brunswick, and twin sons Donald O. Pare and his wife Karen of Centerville, Mass. and Ronald R. Pare and his wife Linda of West Gardiner; two daughters, Jeannette Bilodeau of Cumberland, R.I. and Geraldine “Geri” Wallace and her husband David of Augusta; four sisters, Adrienne Plamondon, Juliette Grondin, Fernande Pouliotte and Gloria Morrissette, all of Augusta; 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
