AUGUSTA

Raymond F. Small - age 60, of Leighton Road, was found dead May 20, 2001at his home after having been ill for several years. He was born in Augusta, Maine on January 17, 1941 the son of Leon F. Small, Sr. and Eleanor (Ayers) Small.

Raymond was a graduate of Cony High School. Prior to his retirement in 1995 due to ill health, he had been employed by Capitol City Transfer, Gagne & Son Concrete and Blue Rock Industries. He had also been a self-employed truck driver for a time. Raymond had also served as a firefighter in the Augusta Fire Department. His hobbies included camping, snowmobiling and he enjoyed racing.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gloria Mitchell.

Surviving is a son, Roderick J. Small and his wife Mary of Industry; one daughter, Julia A. Small of Augusta; one brother, Leon F. Small, Jr. of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Dustin and Ryan Small of Industry; an uncle, Richard Ayers of Sidney and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. Following cremation, a committal service will be held June 9th at 11:00 AM at Mount Hope Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, Maine - Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160.

AUGUSTA

Mary O. Sliva – age 89 of South Belfast Ave., died unexpectedly Thursday, April 12, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Augusta Division. She was born in Augusta on November 8, 1911 the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Nowrocka) Owcarz.

Mrs. Sliva was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1931 and was a communicant of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church.

She had been employed by Bates Mfg. – Edwards Division for over 30 years.

Mrs. Sliva was pre-deceased by her husband of 60 years, Walter Sliva in 1993 and by a granddaughter, Toni L. Sliva.

She is survived by a son, John J. Sliva and his wife, Gretchen of Randolph; a daughter, Joan French and her husband Richard L. French of Augusta; two sisters, Helen Owcarz of Augusta and Julia Fudala of Earlysville, VA; three grandchildren, J. Scott Sliva, Kristin French and Jonathan French; two great-grandchildren, John S. Sliva, II and Matthew R. Sliva; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, April 16th at 1 PM at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta.

Burial will be in the family lot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Augusta later this spring.

Those who desire may make donations to: St. Andrew’s Capitol Campaign, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Leo B. Sousa – age 68 of Washington St., died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. He was born in Augusta on August 12, 1932 the son of Manual and Marianne (Mercier) Sousa.

Mr. Sousa attended Augusta schools and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

He had been employed by Edwards Mfg. Co. for many years and had previously worked for Hallowell Shoe Co. and Hazzard Shoe Co.

Mr. Sousa was pre-deceased by 2 brothers and a sister.

He is survived by his wife, Nina (Bolduc) Sousa of Augusta; three sons, Phillip B. Sousa of Augusta, Leo J. Sousa, Jr. of Lewiston and William B. Sousa of Augusta; a brother, Clifford Sousa of Farmingdale; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 10–11 AM Wednesday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM.

Burial will be held later this spring in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta.

TOGUS

William E. Sterling – age 78 of Togus and formerly of Washington St., Augusta, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Regional Office Center – Togus after a long illness. He was born in Great Neck, VA on April 11, 1923 the son of William and Alice (Moore) Sterling.

Mr. Sterling attended school in Exmore, VA and was a US Navy veteran of WW II.

He had been employed by the Augusta Tank and Culvert Co for several years.

Mr. Sterling is survived by his wife, Alice J. (Jacques) Sterling of Augusta; two sons, William E. Sterling, Jr. and his wife Louella of Silver Springs, MD and Michael A. Sterling and his wife Laura of Hallowell; four daughters, Kay Francis Silva and her husband Dana of Nashua, NH, Gloria J. Babcock and her husband Joseph of Pittston, Joyce A. Farnham and her husband William of Somerville and Carol L. Sterling of Keene, NH; seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

At Mr. Sterling’s request, there will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held in Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Rudolph M. Szady – age 84, of Glendon Street, died April 24, 2001 at the Veterans Hospital at Togus after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta, Maine on April 6, 1917 the son of Lawrence Szady and Frances (Horzempa) Szady.

Mr. Szady attended Augusta schools and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He had been employed by Panek brick masons for several years and previously by Hammond Lumber Company. Mr. Szady also was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps for a time.

Surviving are two brothers, Joseph Szady and Louis Szady, both of Augusta and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Committal prayers will be offered 11:00 AM Monday, April 30th in the Rev. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Mary Elizabeth Tardif – age 92 of North Belfast Ave., died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. She was born in Lewiston on November 27, 1908 the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Sullivan) Scott.

Mrs. Tardif was a graduate of Lewiston High School and was a homemaker for most of her life.

She was a communicant of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, a member of Augusta Nature Club, Kennebec Garden Club and was a former long time member of the Augusta Country Club.

Mrs. Tardif was pre-deceased by her husband, Joseph V. Tardif in 1983.

She is survived by a son, J. Scott Tardif and his wife Betsy of Ocean Park; a daughter, Barbara Tardif Altshuler of Augusta; five grandchildren, Susan Altshuler Norton and her husband Alfred Norton III of Boothbay Harbor, Peter D. Altshuler and his wife Eileen of Warwick, RI, Karen E. Tardif of Waltham, MA, John C. Tardif and his wife Kerryn of Charlestown, MA and Wendy Tardif Ferrucci and her husband Todd of South Attleboro, MA; five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 AM at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Burial will be held later this spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester.

Those who desire may make donations to: St. Andrew’s Capitol Campaign, St. Andrew’s St., Augusta, ME 04330 or to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

WINTERPORT

David H. Thibodeau – age 48 of Fisher Rd., and formerly of Augusta, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 31, 2001 in Bangor. He was born in Augusta on December 17, 1952 the son of Walter and Delia (Fortier) Thibodeau.

Mr. Thibodeau attended Augusta schools and had been employed at Dysart’s in Hermon for a few years.

He was pre-deceased by a brother, Marcel Thibodeau and two sisters, Antoinette “Toni” Laliberte and Mancenette Gousse.

Mr. Thibodeau is survived by a daughter, Tabitha White of Lewiston; a brother, Gerard L. Thibodeau of Chelsea; three sisters, Jeanne Dale, Claudette Jordan and Carol Racine all of Augusta; a granddaughter, Tierra Safe, an uncle and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Grace Toulouse – age 94, of Glenridge Dr., and formerly of Northern Ave., passed away peacefully Monday, March 19, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center at Glenridge Drive. She was born on July 22, 1906 in St. Martin Courseilles, Quebec the daughter of Louis and Marie Louise (Veilleux) Bernier.

Mrs. Toulouse attended school in Oakland and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta.

She retired from Bates Mfg. Co. – Edwards Div. after 41 years as a weaver.

Mrs. Toulouse was past president of Le Club Calumet Ladies Auxiliary, a member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens, Happy Family Senior Citizens and was a former member of the Ladies of St. Anne Society.

Grace enjoyed family gatherings, making her famous tourtieres and berry pies.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Albert A. Toulouse in 1980; 2 sisters, Desange Poulin and Bertha Veilleux and 2 brothers, Louis and Albert Bernier.

Mrs. Toulouse is survived by 2 sons, Roger A. Toulouse and his wife Jeannine and Clement A. Toulouse and his wife Dot all of Augusta; a sister, Juliette Pepin of Augusta; a brother, Joseph Bernier of Chelsea; 2 granddaughters, Susan Toulouse of Augusta and Diane Toulouse of Portland; 2 grandsons, Michael Toulouse, and Mark Toulouse and his fiancée Michelle Adams all of Augusta; a sister-in-law, Pearle Bernier of Waterville; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 21st at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, 1 Kendall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

The Toulouse family wishes to acknowledge the great care given to Grace by the staff at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive - "THANK YOU!"

MONMOUTH

Beverly V. Trenholm - age 77, of Main St., and formerly of Flatiron Corner, Lubec, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta after a brief illness. He was born in East Machias on February 17, 1924 the son of John and Velma (Kelley) Trenholm.

Mr. Trenholm attended Lubec Schools and received both a Bachelors and Masters Degree from the University of Maine in Orono. He performed additional studies at Boston and Northeastern Universities.

He began his career as a teacher in the LaGrange and Lubec schools, and from 1955 to 1958, was teaching principal of Dennysville High School as well as coaching several sports.

Mr. Trenholm worked for 24 years for the Maine Department of Educational and Cultural Services as a vocational-rehabilitation councilor for Washington and Aroostook counties, director of programs in adult education and education of the handicapped and Title 1 programs for disadvantaged children. He rounded out his career as supervisor of the Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond and as superintendent of schools for all unorganized territories in Maine.

Mr. Trenholm was a veteran of WW II serving 3 ½ years in the U.S. Navy, including service in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3315, the American Legion Stuart Green Post of Lubec, a long time member of Masonic Washington Lodge #37 and the Lubec Grange # 434.

Mr. Trenholm served as Vice-president of the Lubec Christian Temple Church Board, Disciples of Christ and was a member of the Lubec Planning Board and was Vice-president of the Lubec Alumni Association. He was the community development director, administering the Lubec Community Development Block Grant Program, which provides low interest loans to small businesses.

Mr. Trenholm was chairman of the Lubec Republican Town Committee, a member of the Washington County Republican Committee and was Town Chairman of Kevin Raye's legislative campaign in 1982.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 43 years, Leone (Campbell) Trenholm; two brothers, Julian and Leland Trenholm and a sister, Dorothy Percival.

Mr. Trenholm is survived by two sons, Gregory S. Trenholm and his wife Rhonda of Farmingdale and Christopher R. Trenholm and his wife Dawn of Monmouth; a daughter, Tamara L. Pratto and her husband Douglas of Peabody, MA; a brother, John C. Trenholm of Lawton, OK; 8 grandchildren, Carrie and Eric Garate, Patrick, Nathan and Nicholas Trenholm and Kelsey, Linda and Daniel Pratto; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Trenholm was very athletic in high school and kept up his athletic interests throughout the rest of his life. As an avid golfer, he has been seen on the Campobello Island Golf Club course in the middle of the February hammering golf tees into the ground.

There will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2001 at 1:00 PM at the Christian Temple Church in Lubec. Burial will be in the Olsen cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Regional Medical Center at Lubec, RR 2, Box 380, Lubec, ME 04652. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
