LEWISTON
Paul Joseph Masse, Sr. - age 48, of Moreau Avenue, was dead on arrival Saturday evening at Mid-Coast Hospital, Brunswick. He was born in Augusta, Maine on June 2, 1952 the son of George E. Masse and Madeline (Pare) Masse.
Paul served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Viet Nam War.
He had been employed by the Veterans Administration Center, Togus for several years and had previously been employed at the Gardiner Post Office for several years.
Paul had served as a 2nd Lt. in the Army National Guard at Camp Keyes in Augusta.
He was a member of the Kennebec Valley Assembly of God and also the Assembly of God of East Livermore. He was the Sunday School superintendent for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy (Carro) Masse of East Livermore; his mother, Madeline Masse of Augusta; two sons: Paul J. Masse, Jr. of Augusta and Aaron Masse of East Monmouth; a daughter, Sarah B. Masse of Augusta; two brothers, George Masse of Augusta and Donald Masse of Palermo; a sister, Lucille Gore of Chelsea; three grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Paul was pre-deceased by a sister, Lillian Smith.
Friends may visit 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Wednesday, April 25th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where a funeral service will be conducted 10 AM Thursday with the Rev. George Dearborn of the Family Worship Center of Waterboro, officiating. Burial will follow in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
HALLOWELL
Barbara Wilde Moriarty – of Winthrop Street, died unexpectedly on Sunday March 25, 2001 at Maine Medical Center, Portland. She was born in Winchester, Mass. on December 4, 1921 the daughter of W. Allan Wilde and Carlene (Gleason) Wilde.
Raised in Winchester, she graduated from Winchester High School in 1938.
She married Robert A. Moriarty of Newton Center. Mass. on May 28, 1948. After residing in Brookline, Mass., they moved to Augusta in 1953 and Hallowell in 1955 where they made their home until 1967.The Moriartys then lived in Auburn until their return to Hallowell in 1983.
Mrs. Moriarty was initially employed with her father’s insurance agency in Winchester, Mass. She later worked for William Webster, an accountant in Augusta and for Mid-Maine Mutual Savings Bank in Auburn, Maine. Most recently, she was a volunteer at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
She and her husband were members of the Augusta Country Club since 1953 and were members of Old South Congregational Church UCC of Hallowell.
Her love of nature began as a youth, when she spent her summers on Lake Wassookeag in Dexter, Maine. Her many interests included reading, needlepoint, cross-stich, knitting, bridge and other card games. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was devoted to her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Robert A. Moriarty of Hallowell; four children, Stephen W. Moriarty of Cumberland, Mrs. Bruce (Joan) Jenkins of Cape Elizabeth, Scott A. Moriarty of Cape Elizabeth and Keith W. Moriarty of Farmingdale and seven grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Alice Holmes of Slingerlands, NY; Ruth Schoch of Pendleton, Oregon and Jeanne Crites of West Minot; a brother, William Wilde of Laconia, NH; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are 2-4 & 6-8 PM Thursday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at Old South Congregational Church, Hallowell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-4688.
AUGUSTA
Christine I. Morin – age 87, of Glenridge Drive, died March 25, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center at Glenridge Drive. She was born in Augusta, Maine on February 13, 1914 the daughter of Elmer D. McDavid and Myrtle (Bryant) McDavid.
Mrs. Morin was a graduate of Cony High School and had been employed as a waitress by the Senator Restaurant in Augusta for many years. She was previously employed by McLellan’s Store in Augusta.
Mrs. Morin was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church of Augusta.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Morin, on Aug. 6, 1978.
Surviving is a brother, Bryant C. McDavid of Augusta; two grandsons, David Morin of Germany and Dustin Morin of Florida; and two nieces, Judy Pooler of Fairfield and Myrtle Sargis of Chicopee, Mass.
A graveside service will be held later this spring at Riverside Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.
WALDOBORO
Edith D. Murphy – age 83, of Depot Street and formerly of Augusta, died Sunday,
May 6, 2001 at Fieldcrest Manor after a long illness. She was born in Waterville, Maine on August 3, 1917 the daughter of Charles W. Davis and Algie (Woodward) Davis.
Prior to her retirement in 1978, Mrs. Murphy had been employed as a licensed practical nurse by Drs. Russell, Sheehan and Mitchell for 14 years. She was previously employed in the same capacity by the Augusta General Hospital for 13 years.
Mrs. Murphy was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Augusta.
She spent 50 years at Ocean Point and enjoyed boating in the waters off Boothbay with her son Gary.
Her husband, Thomas Walter Murphy, died on May 11, 1965. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Grafton Davis and Almon Davis; and three sisters, Gertrude Parent, Helen Clapprood and Cathlyn Adamek.
Surviving is a son, Gary Murphy and his wife Terry of Waldoboro; one brother, Stanley Davis of Niceville, Florida; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manchester.

AUGUSTA
Robert D. "Babe" Pare -age 70 of Chase Ave., died Friday, May 25, 2001 at Maine Medical Center, Portland after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta on July 13, 1930 the son of George and Adele (Parent) Pare.
Babe, as everyone knew him, was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a 37 year member of Abnaki Council # 334-3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, a 27 year member of Abnaki Assembly # 346-4th Degree Knights of Columbus, had been involved with the "Wheelchair Program" at Togus for the whole State of Maine and Knights of Columbus Program helping Disabled Veterans to attend Mass, which he has done in the name of the Maine State Council of Knights of Columbus for over 38 years. He also assisted the Rev. Leonard LeClair, a former Catholic Chaplain at Togus, helping prepare for Mass every Sunday, and later assisting Fr. Francis J. Kane.
He enjoyed gardening and his flower garden, and resting when he could at his sister Desneiges's camp.
He was a Cony High School graduate and attended Bates Business College here in Augusta.
Babe had been employed for over 42 years at Augusta Supply Company, having started to work there part time at age 15 and subsequently at True Value Hardware Store, who purchased Augusta Supply.
He was a very lovable, friendly, helpful and jovial person helping anybody whenever it was possible for him to do so.
Survivors include 2 sisters, Lucienne Beaulieu and Desneiges Beaulieu and her husband Armand, all of Augusta; 2 brothers, Laurent Pare of Augusta and Laurier Pare and his wife Bernice of Hallowell; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit Tuesday, May 30th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where Officers and Members of Abnaki Assembly # 346-4th Degree are asked to meet at 6:30 PM to form the Honor Guard for Sir Knight Robert D. Pare and will be followed by the presentation of the Chalice at the close of the visiting hours. Officers and members of Abnaki Council # 334-3rd Degree Knights of Columbus are asked to meet at the funeral home Tuesday evening at 7 PM to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will follow in the family lot in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

AUGUSTA
Joseph R. L. “Leo” “Barney” Pelletier – age 81 of Northern Ave., died Friday, March 9, 2001 at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta, after a long illness. He was born in Augusta on November 6, 1919 the son of Wilfred and Ludivine (Morrissette) Pelletier.
Mr. Pelletier attended Augusta schools and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
He served in the U. S. Marine Corps during WW II and was wounded in action in 1941.
Mr. Pelletier had been employed by the Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office Center, Togus for 28 years and had previously worked at Hazzard Shoe Co.
He was a member of the Calumet Club, Disabled American Veterans and A. A. R. P.
Mr. Pelletier was pre-deceased by his wife, Florida M. (Quirion) Pelletier; two brothers, Benedict and Forrest Pelletier and a sister, Anita Levesque.
He is survived by two sons, Donald Pelletier of Augusta and Ronald Pelletier of Winthrop; a sister, Jacqueline Gilbert of Augusta; a granddaughter, Ariel Pelletier of Augusta; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends may visit on Sunday, March 11th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where officers and members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 7 PM Sunday to recite prayers for their departed member. AUGUSTA
Dr. Paul Henry Pfeiffer - age 83, died May 17, 2001 at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, Maine. He was born on December 4, 1917 in Niagra Falls, New York to Robert H. and Matilde V. Pfeiffer. In 1919 they moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Paul was educated at the Buckingham School and graduated in 1935 from Browne and Nichols School, both in Cambridge. He graduated from Harvard College in 1939 and from the Harvard Medical School in 1943. He married Valerie Presbrey of Taunton, Massachusetts in October 2, 1943.
After an internship in medicine at the Boston City Hospital, Dr. Pfeiffer served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II as the medical officer of a PT boat squadron. Following his naval service, Dr. Pfeiffer returned to the Boston City Hospital for a year; from there he spent a year in cancer research at the Tufts Medical School. He went on to train at Sloan Kettering in New York City. After he completed his training at the Boston City Hospital, Dr. Pfeiffer practiced medicine in Danbury, Connecticut. He subsequently worked at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California from 1953-1955. He moved to Waterville, Maine in 1955 and spent the next 25 years on the staffs of the Thayer and Seton Hospitals and conducted his own private practice. He served 10 years on the staff at the Veterans Hospital, Togus, Maine before retiring.
Dr. Pfeiffer was a delegate from Maine to the American Medical Association. He also travelled with Senator Muskie in his campaign for the Democratic Vice Presidency in 1967 and was a delegate from Maine to the Democratic Convention in 1968. He was also a board member of the Community Action Program and an early member of the Veterans for Peace organization.
Dr. Pfeiffer was an experienced and enthusiastic traveler; he traveled extensively in Europe, and in his later years in Asia. He went twice with his wife as a volunteer under the auspices of U.S.A.I.D. to teach in the Kabul Medical School, Afghanistan. He also went to South Vietnam as a volunteer to work with a group giving health care to the Montagnards.
Dr. Pfeiffer was president of the Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Foundation during his professional career which awards grants for medical and pharmaceutical research. During his tenure, he helped to establish an exchange of medical students between Howard and Harvard Medical Schools and also to establish six professorial chairs at medical schools around the country.
He is survived by his wife and his two sons, Robert H. Pfeiffer and his wife, Julianna of Hope, Maine, Peter Pfeiffer of Solon, Maine, granddaughters Sarah Pfeiffer of Washington, D.C. and Katherine Pfeiffer of Augusta, Maine, sister Louise Pfeiffer of Cambridge, Mass. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family, and a memorial service will be arranged in the near future. Those who desire can make a donation to the charity of their choice.
HALLOWELL
Lloyd A. “Blondie” Pilsbury – 83 of Shady Lane died Wednesday April 18, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Togus after a long illness.
He was born in Farmingdale September 10, 1917 the son of Norman and Viola (Knight) Pilsbury.
Mr. Pilsbury was a W.W. II Army Veteran having been inducted and activated as a member of the Maine Army National Guard and was discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant with the (4514th Division as Ammunition Supply Officer.) He continued with the Maine Army National Guard, commanding the 142nd Ordinance Co. (DS) until his retirement as a Captain in 1962.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, a Life member of the Fitzgerald-Cummings Post # 2 American Legion, a member of the Pine Tree Post # 887 Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and was active with the Capital Area Recreation Association as well as a member of the Board of Directors.
He was an avid golfer at Natanis, Western View, and Cobbosseecontee Golf Courses, he was also active in several bowling leagues for many years at Interstate Bowling Lanes and served on the Board of Directors of the Augusta National Guard Babe Ruth League.
He had been employed by Central Maine Power Company for 33 years both as a lineman and later as the Telephone Coordinator for the Company.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary E. (Pickett) Pilsbury on April 13, 1994 and a daughter Sue Grace Pilsbury in 1957, also by a brother Ralph Pilsbury and a sister Virginia Smith.
Survivors include two sons: Arthur N. “Snookie” Pilsbury and his wife Priscilla of Augusta and Terry A. Pilsbury and his wife Linda of Houlton; a daughter Pamela P. Bartlett of Hallowell; two brothers: Carl Pilsbury and his wife Mary Lou and Robert Pilsbury and his wife Sally all of Augusta; five grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit Saturday April 21,2001 from 5 to 8 P.M. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street Augusta followed by funeral services and committal prayers by the Rev. Michael Gendreau, Pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Burial will be later this spring in the family lot St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pelton Hill, Manchester. AUGUSTA
Hilda Plourde – age 83, of Glenridge Drive, died March 24, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a long illness. She was born in Drummond, New Brunswick, Canada on April 23, 1917 the daughter of Levite Violette and Flavie (Albert) Violette.
Mrs. Plourde trained as an apprentice at the Claire Cyr Beauty Salon. She went on to own her own beauty salon, known as Hilda’s Beauty Salon. She later owned and operated LaPetite Beauty Salon. Before her retirement, Mrs. Plourde was employed by Barden’s Beauty Salon.
Mrs. Plourde was a member of the Assumption Society.
Mrs. Plourde was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters as well as a great-grandson.
Surviving are three daughters, Joan Ouellette and her husband Robert of Augusta, Shirley Dubord and her husband Patrick of Rockwood and Claudette Stonier and her husband Lawrence of Augusta; five brothers, Romeo Violette of Hartford, CT, Camille Violette of Biddeford, Alexis Violette of Augusta, Lionel Violette of Arizona, and Brother Maurice Violette O.M.I. of Colebrook, NH; one sister, Theresa “Audie” Lambert of Fayette and Florida; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. Andrews Catholic Church. After cremation, burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Church Capital Campaign, RR 10, Box 1350, Augusta, ME 04330.
